The magic of Monaco

THE MAGIC OF BY JANINE KETTERER

VEN AFTER 21 YEARS, the magic of Monaco still glimmers in Port Hercules as yachts head into port, drop anchor and tie up in preparation for the annual Monaco Yacht Show (MYS). This four-day spectacle will run from Wednesday, September 19 through Saturday, September 22 and is sure to enchant all those who enter her gates. There’s a fairytale charm to Monte Carlo; perhaps it’s her royalty — her sovereigns often seen on the docks of the show — or her Mediterranean muses, but we applaud whatever imbues Monaco with her magic and can’t wait to see what she has in store for her 22nd year. Gates open at 10 a.m. daily, and more than 500 of the world’s leading superyacht companies stand arms open wide to greet guests of the show, which closes at 6:30 p.m. nightly.

with outstanding environmental qualities, and HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco will be on hand to recognize the winner. This won’t be the only celebrated vessel at the show, as the Prix du Design award will be given to the yacht featuring the most innovative design. Not to be outdone, Fraser Yachts once again will award its best charter captains and crew at the Fraser Yachts Captains’ Dinner at the Yacht Club de Monaco Thursday evening, September 20. And if you’re looking for more glitz and glam, Boat International Media has it in spades as it launches the 26th volume of The Superyachts book at The Hermitage that same night. (Don’t forget your invitation.) With all of this on the docket for MYS 2012, it’s no wonder there will be thousands of people at the show hoping to capture just a small spark of Monaco’s magic.

As if the exhibitors on the docks aren’t enough to add to Monaco’s mystique, 100 superyachts in all sizes will be ready for viewing, thanks to the handiwork of some very talented crew, who create their own brand of magic on board each vessel, every day. The crown jewel of this year’s show is none other than Vicky, Proteksan Turquoise’s 72.6-meter beauty, which was launched at the end of June 2012. She’ll stand majestically alongside Nobiskrug’s 74-meter Mogambo and Better Place, Wally’s 50.5-meter new launch, who just happens to be the world’s largest carbon fiber sloop and the first sailing yacht to comply with RINA’s Green Star class. And speaking of green, this year, as in the past, RINA will present the “Green Plus Yacht Award 2012” to a vessel

2011 Happy Hour

BE OUR GUEST IN THE CAPTAINS’ HIDEOUT

CAPTAINS’ HIDEOUT AT A GLANCE

As Monaco gears up for MYS, the 22nd edition, Dockwalk is proud to present our sixth annual Captains’ Hideout in Monaco for all the captains and crew who grace the docks of Port Hercules. We invite you to be our guests of honor from Tuesday, September 18 through Saturday, September 22, as we wine and dine you, provide a place to rest your weary feet (tired from all of that passerelle standing and tour giving) and provide access to free Wi-Fi — though most of your friends will be in the Captains’ Hideout with you, seeking refuge from the blazing sun and tire kickers. As in years past, Dockwalk’s Captains’ Hideout will kick things off for captains and crew the night before the big show. The Welcome Party will help ease you into the hustle and bustle of the boat show bonanza in the Stars ‘n’ Bars newly re-envisioned Star Deck (ex-Fusion Restaurant) — our fabulous location for both party and Hideout. Head up at 8 p.m. for drinks, snacks and dancing, courtesy of our DJ. The Welcome Party ends at 9:30 p.m., but guests are more than welcome to continue the celebration long after the official party ends. Thursday morning we begin our boat show routine, serving up breakfast, lunch, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi and fun to our captain and crew patrons. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Dockwalk Captains’ Hideout will be your asylum. Be sure you’re in the door at 10 a.m. for the continental breakfast, which will be served until 11 a.m. Lunch begins at 12 p.m., so stop by to scoop up some hot food, which will be served until 2 p.m. And don’t forget about our bar (which opens at noon) for some much-needed libations. Once you’ve been properly fed and watered, you might need a mental break, and free Internet and computer access provided by SeaSatCom are just the tickets. There’s never a dull moment in the Hideout as sponsors keep crew — those who want to participate — on their toes with games and competitions for lots of amazing prizes. Check out Dockwalk.com’s event page for updates. And just whom do you have to thank for all the fun and games? Headline sponsor Luxury Yacht Group and sponsors BUPA International, Deckers Ocean Attire, EGP, ISS GMT, SeaSatCom, Valencia Yacht Base, Warsash Maritime Academy and Yacht Fuel Services, of course. Please note that the Dockwalk Captains’ Hideout is for professional superyacht captains and crew only. Management maintains the right to refuse entry and to request additional identification.
