SHOULDN’T EVERY SUPERYACHT HAVE ITS OWN SECRET HIDEOUT? Before I was dockmaster here, I captained superyachts, so I know how important the quality of the docks and the services provided by marinas really are. Here, we have some of the most modern facilities anywhere in the Caribbean, all tucked into a clear, tranquil bay, just miles from a private air terminal and surrounded by unspoiled beauty. It may just be the best kept secret in the Caribbean. This isn’t just any Caribbean marina; this is Christophe Harbour. Linda Pearson, Dockmaster

yacht builders and countless other

sectors in the luxury market spend

millions on attempting you to believe otherwise. However, very few of these sectors can provide the solitude,

HOME PORT?

WHEREVER I DROP MY HOOK By Nick Jeffery

Other than Billionaires’ Quay at IYCA Antibes, opened in 1986, few marinas were suitable for accommodating and servicing more than a couple of large superyachts just decades ago. North Cove in Manhattan was one of them, created by the Mexican Emilio Azcarraga after he had crossed the Atlantic with George Nicholson then realized had nowhere to moor his superyacht.

THE MINI

SUPERYACHTS By Frances and Michael Howorth

As yachts got larger, so increasingly new names were devised to describe them. First the term mega yacht was coined then gigayacht came into vogue. Now as the superyacht tender market grows to keep apace with superyachts of today, the complexity of tender design and cost of build seems to suggest that size alone should not define how we use the word superyacht.

No longer are tenders used to send

behind an Amels 55 metre superyacht and is carried on the upper deck during longer voyages. The company

is continually improving its product line and is developing bigger m odels, to improve comfort, sea keeping, fuel

or price? Clearly the cost is a rising among the well known and estab lished brands. Tenders are becoming more and more expensive year on year, yet it is difficult to pin down quite

RIGHT NOW, PAY ATTENTION.

O

ur Official Secrets log suggests that the Internet of Things (IoT) has an approved charted course within the Superyacht market. As there are more smart devices connected to the Internet than there are humans on planet earth, I’m being somewhat successful in my approach. Recently developed IT solutions and devices undoubtedly create extraordinary potential for existing Superyacht businesses, giving sight to entirely new marine markets. Putting it mildly, the predicted annual economic global impact has been estimated to be more than 10 trillion Euros. Remember, as your Quartermaster, I never joke about my work. This prospect comes with an integer of engineering challenges, most extraordinarily the collective complexity of advanced product requirements, regulation and a stern operating environment. It’s our future, and so we will just have to get used to it. Good luck out there all you 007s in the field… And please return the equipment in one piece.

REVOLUTIONARY TECHNOLOGY FOR SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS Don’t thank me, resourcefulness is credited to e3 Systems and Kymeta® who will demonstrate Kymeta’s mTenna® technology. The Kymeta antenna uses revolutionary new, innovative softwareenabled metamaterialsbased electronic beamforming technology for satellite communications. This technology will be used for land based satellite tracking antennas, satellite antennas on any mobile vehicle from yachts to trains to cars, and on satellites to make connec tions between orbiting spacecraft. By 2020 the future generation of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites will have been standardized, providing ultrahigh bandwidth with very low latency. These tech nological marvels are small and reliable tracking antennas that will fundamentally change the way Superyachts are ultimately designed.

For many years, the yacht sky line has been painted with white satellite domes mounted in the rigging of sailboats and on the masts of Superyachts. However, this is all about to change, as e3’s implementation of Kymeta mTenna technology flat panel antennas will replace such unsightly domes. These revolutionary new sat ellite antennas are set to not only improve the look of today’s Superyachts, but also expand their performance and reliability by providing a significant step forward in supporting satellite connectivity to places never reached before. While in the field, note that e3 Systems specializes in HYBRID data communications.

TURNS AS SMART CONNECT ROOM CONTROLS Dial in and focus, please. Ideaworks has created Turn, a new generation of smart connected room controls. Its uncluttered configurable interface, intuitive rotary control and clean design provides luxury and finesse to any space.

VERY LITTLE ACOUSTICS SPEAKERS FOR A 360° SOUND SURROUNDING So, as I understand it, Videoworks is able to achieve the most demanding audiophile’s needs, with 360° sound surrounding the listener in a unique virtual experience. Very little acoustics speakers, by Revolution Acoustics, represents a true audio innovation. Now listen closely. The following information is to be handled with special care. The SSP6™ Multiducer™ can turn all surfaces for which they are installed in into invisible sound walls. These power ful compact speakers can be quickly installed and embedded into glass, wood or aluminum, making the material itself transmit as an acoustic surface. To obtain even higher surface rever beration results, Videoworks offers an exclusively developed DSP board. The DSP board is a result of “digital

room correction”, a mathematic algorithm called “Percept”, which has been realized through a direct collaboration with the Università Politecnica delle Marche. The board is pivotal for the equalization of repeatable and stable sound results. “Percept” realizes a “digital room correction” by making crucial decisions, based on the result of the identification process and the signal nature. In this way, it reduces all the factors that can negatively influence the quality of sound: internal materials, wide reflecting surfaces, resonances and asymmetries. Such interactive technology allows for significant space saving. But more importantly and while hiding the product is captivatingergonomic sound will use acoustic propagation physics as a medium for true artistic expression of technology.

Turn is unique. A beautifully curved glass display, centered around a weighted rotating ring. Every element of Turn has been designed to create an incredible user experience. Crafted from 6000 series aluminum alloy, the knurled tactile feel allows you to adjust your surroundings like never before. Turn is so intuitive that it takes very little learning. Instinctively you will reach for a doorknob or a dimmer switch, knowing which way to turn it. Lights on, lights off, temperature up, temperature down, blinds close, blinds open. Expect intensity to be varied by which the speed of the device is turned. Fine adjustments are achieved by turning slowly. Moving between functions is simple; just swipe across the screen in order to select an application to manage. Don’t be fooled by the elegant exterior, Turn is truly a connected device. Featuring an A9 dual core chip, highresolution multitouch display and, supporting wireless technologies such as WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0.

MAN-MACHINE-INTERFACE VISUALIZATIONS I have always tried to teach a few things and software awareness in one of them. Such as it is, Radio Zeeland DMP software is written in C++ and compiled into micro processor specific code. The software is extremely stabile and virtually real time for a nonPC environment.

broadcast information. All work stations, panels and remote monitoring displays are able to use that information for visualization and to command any junction box. The result is the ultimate redundancy and faulttolerant system.

Windows application software on PCbased platforms can be more visually appealing and is therefore used for manmachineinterface visualizations as conning systems, alarm monitoring and control applications.

Handling electrical signals and converting them to information, can be handled by the system and vice versa, is the task performed by the VMACS acquisition level. This data acquisition level can be divided in two ranges of VMACS units, namely the single board and the multiboard. The multiboard VMACS consist of an intelligent junction box equipped with I/O boards and converters. Radio Zeeland DMP B.V. offers a vast range of boards, making the junction boxes more flexible and able to be adapted to specific power and IoT requirements.

The Vessel Monitoring Alarms and Control System (VMACS) is the acquisition for custom systems. Radio Zeeland’s acquisition back bone is VMACS, with a redundant Ethernet ring as a dedicated communication link. All intelligent VMACS junction boxes are fully selfsupporting and continuously

LIVING TECHNOLOGY Oh, pipe down. Van Berge Henegouwen, (VBH), is the leader in the design and delivery of Living Technology. This term refers to all the hightech equipment and gadgets that together defines the life on board a superyacht. VBH designs and installs the integrated audiovisual, IT and automation systems that play such an important role in the modern superyacht experience. Recently VBH and their inhouse design team LuxperienceLab specified Bluetooth low-energy

beacons placed within overhead ceiling, linking to an innovative Pivot control app that receives Follow Me signals which are activated by the owner and guests. This allows streaming AV entertain ment to automatically switch from one room to the next as the user moves around the yacht. LuxperienceLab has also devised a neat solution to improve the response times of the crew to service calls from owner and guests. To achieve this, VBH has adapted the Pivot app to operate on Apple watches issued to crew. This enables them to discreetly receive and acknowledge steward calls and other alerts issued via the VBH Pivot app. And by linking the crew to a coordinated network in this way, when a crew member indicates via their watch that they are on their way, all the other crew instantly know that the guest is being taken care of and can continue with their duties without interruption. It’s fast and discreet, and the casual observer wouldn’t even know it was happening.

UNDERWATER VISUALISATION SYSTEM Hmm, imaginative and highly specialized. FarSounder sonars give captains a realtime underwater view of what is ahead of the superyacht at significant navigational ranges (currently 1,000 meters). Recently, an integration partnership with Wärtsilä SAM Electronics and the delivery of the first superyacht with a sonar display integrated directly inside the NACOS Platinum Bridge System has been achieved. This follows another success by

combining a sonar displays within the Transas NaviSailor 4000 ECDIS. Additional assimilations within other major ECDIS/IBS systems are soon expected. Being experts in 3D FLS technology, integrating virtual touch panels and IoTs allow designers to create elegant custom bridge layouts with streamlined human interfaces. FarSounder will provide superyachts the ability to reduce their overall environmental impact by providing a solution in underwater visualization.

RELIABLE AND SECURE ULTRA-HIGH BANDWIDTH Now this I’m particularly proud of: superyachts that need more band width for purposes from business to entertainment there is the CELL Weaver. The rollout of 4G (LTE) mobile networks does hold out the promise of up to 100 Mbit/s of data, but actual speeds are likely to be lower, even more so with 3G. The compact, rack mounted unit takes four SIM cards and combines their data streams into one reliable and secure ultrahigh bandwidth. Realistic average speed of 160 MBit/s plus in 4G (LTE) areas and 40 MBit/s plus where there is 3G. CELLweaver supports streaming based entertainment, interactive and cloudbased

services that require not only fast downloads but particularly fast uploads. CELLweaver also speeds up many processes “behind the scenes”, such as when crew members need to exchange large files for yacht management purposes. Technology works up to seven nautical miles offshore, and even up to 25 nautical miles with the optional CELLweaver range extenders. Developed especially with highintensity marine usage in mind.

CUTTING-EDGE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS If you’ll be good enough to listen, I’ll have you know ABB is developing cuttingedge superyacht information technology solutions. ABB’s marine Integrated Operations concept utilizes the Internet of Things, Services and People (IoTSP). This highly intelligent system connects Superyachts, their owners, technical headquarters and ABB’s support departments. ABB opened an Integrated Operations Center last year in Norway and a second opening in Helsinki, Finland, to focus on the Azipod propulsion and passenger vessel segment. The new facility is taking the support for ships from the shore side to the next level, bringing great cost and safety benefits to ship owners, whilst paving the way for more autonomous superyacht operations. Sensors and software onboard the ship send equipment and performance data via satellite link, which allows ship owners, in collaboration with ABB’s experts, to perform remote troubleshooting and make informed

judgements about the ship’s perfor mance and maintenance plan. With Integrated Operations, ship owners can implement a way of working that potentially saves up to 50 percent on dry docking costs on ABB equipment if monitoring, presurvey and project execution are managed in close cooperation between ABB and the ship owner. For over a decade now, ABB has been working to develop and enhance process control systems, communications solutions, sensors and software for the IoTSP. These technologies enable Superyacht clients to analyze their data more intelligently, optimize operations, and boost productivity and flexibility. ABB is advancing the IoTSP by helping Superyachts clients develop their existing technologies, while keeping sight of enduring commitment to safety, reliability, cyber security and data privacy.

MONITORING YOUR YACHT’S PERFORMANCE, SAFETY AND CONTROL Oh, yes. Now see here: For intelligent data management and security purposes, Tijssen Elektro has developed an MPA alarm and monitoring system that gives access to onboard information about your yacht. Your yacht shouldn’t be without such a system, because it makes the life of captain and crew much easier. MPA makes it possible to closely monitor the yacht’s performance, safety and control over almost all the electrical systems. The components of the MPA system are spread throughout the yacht with two main areas: the main panel in the engine room / control room and at the dashboard in the wheelhouse. All these components are connected to a local network area (MPA network) but also completely separated from the ships LAN network. Through tabletbased IT application software solutions, the MPA can even be continuously monitored in realtime and from anywhere there is a secure connection to the internet.

INTEGRATED CONTROL VIA A SINGLE TOUCH SCREEN INTERFACE May I remind you, as a perfectly feasible data management solution, Cobham’s SAILOR GNSS / DGNSS are vital components for vessels’ primary navigation systems. In order for me to track your movements, Cobham will provide highly accurate satellite positioning data for a wide variety of applications, including ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) and INS (Integrated Navigation System).

Cobham calls it, the SAILOR ‘MultiFunction Universe’. This ‘integrated’ approach allows crews and service engineers to operate and access a range of SAILOR products from the same touch screen interface (the SAILOR 6004 control panel), which can significantly increase safety on the bridge, while also saving time and cost in equipment maintenance.

SAILOR GNSS / DGNSS and SAILOR AIS deliver reliability and accuracy as standalone products. Together though, a navigation portfolio intro duces something entirely new for the maritime industry; integrated control via a single touch screen interface.

be selected for their innovative aspect, whether this be of a technological or institutional nature or related to public education efforts.

Ongoing communication will be pro

In the long term, this call for micro- initiatives will gradually lead to the creation of a Mediterranean network of

local players committed to combating plastic pollution.

The yachting sector, which is directly impacted by plastic pollution, can

become a major player in this fight. The Prince Albert II of Monaco

remain available for discussing with you on how to support BeMed.

WOOD FOREVER PACT AND BEYOND? In June 2006, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco decided to set up His Foundation to respond to the worry ing threats to biodiversity, the climate and water resources on our planet. Working internationally, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation mobi lises the public, political officials, scientists and economic stakeholders in the defence of nature. The Mediter ranean is one of its toppriority geo graphic areas, the Foundation’s home, the cradle of civilisation, and a biodi versity hotspot. On land, in the sea or in the air, whether working in the field or conducting scientific research, the Foundation is present on all fronts, and brings together a range of stakeholders who all share the same cause: the protec tion of our environment. The Foundation constantly seeks to develop a harmonious balance between human activities and the preservation of ecosystems. For example, it defends a view of marine protection which is compatible with the development of human activity at sea. This position has naturally steered its activities towards countering the threats inherent in the exploitation of the sea and pollution from human activity. The search for solutions to the proliferation of plastics is one of the major challenges.

For the past six years, the Monaco Yacht Show has been supporting the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. In this framework, the Wood Forever Pact, an initiative focused on the pro motion of the use of wood harvested from sustainably managed forests within the yachting industry, was launched. Promoting the use of certified wood is the best way to prevent deforestation, protect biodiversity and combat pov erty in the tropical rainforest regions. For the yachting sector, which strives for excellence and which is already involved in environmental efforts, this is also a way of ensuring that no wood from illegal logging is used. This project helped us create a net work of yacht builders and interior designers willing to work toward the use of sustainable wood. A lot of seeds have been planted and we will continue working on getting certified/ sustainable teak on the market. How ever, many other issues need to be tackled. In order to broaden our action within the yachting industry, we are now looking into compiling in a booklet an overview of what the yachting sector is currently developing in the environ mental field. The aim of this booklet, which will be distributed during Monaco Yacht Show 2016, is to encourage every player of this industry to go a step further towards greener yachts. The booklet will mainly focus on the following topics: yacht materials, especially wood, alternative energy that can be used on yachts, ecological anchorage which is currently a hot topic, including in Monaco and surroundings cities and waste and grey water management with a focus on plastic pollution.
