With perfect symmetry, the 16 sided, 105 faceted D-Brilliant Cut does not display the typical hearts and arrows pattern of a round stone - previously thought to offer prime light performance. Instead when viewing the artistry of the D-Brilliant cut, up close, through a loupe, what you will see is a Lotus Flower pattern on the diamond’s pavilion. This splits the light into more frequencies than a round stone, creating more light scintillation and more brilliance; technicalities aside, the D-Brilliant Cut has WMKRMJMGERXP] QSVI WTEVOPI

EDITORIAL The 23rd Monaco Yacht Show is just three months away as our Summer Magazine arrives hot off the press on the Cote d’Azur. Exhibitors and visitors alike already have the show dates (25/28 September) in their diaries and those with experience will be scheduling yacht viewings and VIP meetings at the MYS Upper Deck Lounge – successfully launched last year. This is the ideal place for a celebratory glass of Champagne, perhaps after placing an order for a brand new superyacht featured in our special preview. My team and I really do strive to keep improving the show, every year, and to develop new ideas along with you our “stakeholders” in the industry: as part of the show’s drive to serve yachting, we will be holding the inaugural Monaco Yacht Summit on the eve of the show. This new rendezvous will address issues of importance to yacht owners and buyers and to create a space where the main players in yachting can meet, talk and build relationships.

The Summit will stand as one more yachting event to position Monaco as capital of yachting, in coherence with the new commission of the same name, which aims to boost Monaco’s appeal and whose President is the Secretary General of the Yacht Club de Monaco, Bernard d’Alessandri. He is one of Nick Jeffery’s four fantastic interviewees who share with you different elements through the magazine’s contents. Crazy requests by owners when ordering the building of their yacht and recommendations by chefs to experience an unforgettable cuisine on board – are you getting in shape now for the show? – provide plenty of food for thought. Philanthropy and doing good is ubiquitous in Monaco, from Prince Albert II Foundation’s “Wood Forever Pact”, promoting the use of wood from well-managed forests on superyachts to “Only Watch” also under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II. The fifth edition of this charity auction, whose proceeds fund research

into a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, will see leading watch manufacturers’ one-off works of art come under the hammer. Monaco Yacht Show and parent company Informa Group are deeply committed to supporting both of these causes. Glamour, fun and philanthropy really do go hand in hand in Monaco. Enjoy your reading. See you next September in the Capital of Yachting!

The lead designers, Immo Lüdeling and Tim Ulrich, deconstructed the notion of space utilisation and adapted it to match an item of real estate rather than a yacht. The concept of an all-surround stern quarterdeck, which can be fully (!) transformed into balconies or a jetty, enabled the aft deck to be kept extremely flat and thus encapsulate the sensation of a beach. transfer from steam to internal combustion created in the past. Ecological and environmental requirements will drive changes too. I think that solid teak decks and cap rails will become as unfashionable as leopard skin coats are now.” A very similar opinion is held by the Danish star designer Timothy Jacob Jensen, who in addition to his designs for Gaggenau, B & O or Vertu also has a yacht in his portfolio. His Envury catamaran may only be 80 feet long, but she incorporates solar panels to generate energy and a small garden in her stern to ensure a basic level of provision on board. Jensen, CEO of the global player Jensen Studios and one of the world’s most successful industrial designers, says: “In future intellectual prosperity, which of course also requires a certain amount of grandstanding, will become more and more important. But that does not work with fast and furious planers. A new generation of owners will cast the Las Vegas lifestyle aside and display environmental correctness as a status symbol.” £

"Inspired by racing Dhows this concept was already drawn for a client who wanted a very large sailing with the internal volume usually found on large motoryachts. Ecological and enviromental requirements will drive changes", says top-designer Francis Martin.

THE ELEMENTS OF

SIMPLICITY BY Charlotte Bailey

At its most sublime, the experience of superyacht cruising transports those on board completely away from the distractions and business of the everyday. Superyachts may be some of the most technologically progressive and detailed design pieces in existence, but beneath that, the beauty of being on a yacht is that it remains one of the only ways to disconnect from the chatter of today’s 24-7 world and reconnecting with the most basic elements of existence.

It

ICING ON THE

Sailing in a super yacht, cruising is likely to offer the best holiday ever. Settled into a comfortable, attractively appointed space, travelling along, taking in the beauty, sights and sounds there wafts from the galley; a delicious aroma. The chef is busy preparing a meal. “Soon it will be lunch or dinner time,” says Silvia Weston of Nicholson Yacht Charters, “And you have a splendid treat in store, feasting on delicacies, gleaned from the food preference sheet, and lovingly prepared by the capable chef!” Silvia should know she has been organising charters for decades and believes food plays an important part in the super yacht experience.

super yacht industry to answer the following question: «What is the weirdest/craziest request you have had from a client during the building of his yacht?» Here are just some of their more printable answers.

Tim Hodgdon, President of Hodgdon Yachts Over the years we have had many requests to add unique features to their projects. One such was on a 38 metre modern built classic sailboat to include in its interior, a custom pipe organ, a wood burning fi replaceand a wooden bathtub of complex curvature. These requests added to the unique aspect of this sailboat’s extraordinary interior.

Maurizio Magri, CEO of Kaiserwerft One owner had to explain to me why, despite adoring his wife they had to have separate ensuite cabins on opposite sides of a corridor. “She walks in her sleep,” he told me “and although she cannot ever remember doing so in the morning, she can wake me up by hitting me during her walk. If we put her cabin on the other side of a wooden floored alleyway I will hear her coming and prepare myself.”

Rodney Martin, Managing Director OF Fitzroy Yachts Owner’s rep came on board late in the build, thought that the saloon cabin wouldn’t be tall enough to accommodate the Owners cowboy hat, and asked us for a variation to raise the saloon roof by 100mm. The variation came back at several h undred thousand- and the next day it was a pproved by the owner!

Vincenzo Poerio, CEO OF Benetti Yachts One that comes to my mind was in 2005. The Owner of Ambrosia III had a passion for astronomy and wanted a planetarium inside the sky lounge. He wanted it to simulate a real night view of the stars, planets and constellations. It had to be able to change and rotate (and open) according to the real boat position in terms of latitude and longitude. We did it of course, gaining at the same time a deep knowledge in complex astronomy!

Francis Lapp, President OF Sunreef Yachts I remember once a client coming with his laptop and showing me a video simulation of one of our big catamarans literally walking out of the water on giant legs and walking up the beach. He said it was his dream to have such kind of boat and wanted Sunreef Yachts to build it. Obviously it was impossible but we had some good laugh together.

Iñigo Toledo, Barracuda Yacht Design Ltd Certainly the most radical request that we ever had was from the Owner of Akalam to have some windows like at home. He said: “I want it like this”, making gestures with his arms (something like 3x1m size). Happily we managed to get away with a sequence of four 0.9x0.65m windows. But the problem came again when he said: “Yes, and in the dining room as well” This was where the mast section was, so our yacht began to resemble an Emmental cheese. Not easy at all. The dinning room sole is now level with the sea surface, so it feels like you could almost walk out onto the water.

Jonny Horsfield. Owner and Design Director OF H2 Yacht Design The sweetest request we had came from a couple who wanted a window between the bathroom and the bedroom so that they could talk to each other whilst the other was in the bath! We had another client who did not want to waste space with clothes storage. Every night he simply threw all his clothes on to the floor and would find what he wanted the next morning from the pile around him!

Roland Kruger, CEO OF Newcruise Life is never dull designing super yachts but one of the most amusing requests we had was from someone very serious. He needed to have his yacht so well equipped from p otential threats that we even went as far as designing a stylish vehicle to keep on board for use by him and his family to escape in, should they ever be attacked. The brief called for a high speed, had to have Kevlar armour plating craft capable of surviving chemical, biological, nuclear and rocket attacks. Even a mounting position for an anti aircraft gun system on the upper deck had to be investigated. The idea was eventually dropped when he realised how expensive it would be to say nothing of the legal burden it would bring with it!

Marcel Onkenhout, CEO Oceanco At the early stages of the design our Naval Architects, the Designers and the Owner were discussing the position of the h eli-deck and the swimming pool. No one could agree and finally the owner stood up from the table and declared “Make the pool larger and we will land the helicopter on top of it!” The rest is history.

Rupert Mann, Rainsford Mann Design Ltd Over the years many a request has been far reaching and challenging but usually mixed with modicum of sanity but the bar was raised when a client requested we incorporate a mini version of the owners’ suite for Bart, their pet monkey! The “Simeon Suite” as it became known, was even to have its own galley to enable Bart’s favourite snacks to be prepared. Unfortunately due to international quarantine laws this idea never really got off the ground further than the paper it was designed on !

Tim Saunders, Tim Saunders Yacht Design I remember joining a client on board his private aircraft for a trip to Turkey to visit a yacht he was planning to convert. On the way, he asked me what I would design for him if he were to build a new yacht. I took out my sketchpad and began draw. I gave him my first thoughts, 3 hours later as we landed in Turkey. At the meeting in the shipyard he stunned everybody, including me, when he scrapped the conversion project and held my drawings in the air. Then he said, «Gentlemen we are going to build a brand new 50 metre, and here is what she is going to look like.»

Luca Bassani Antivari, President of Wally I recall one occasion that clashes somewhat with the laws of physics where an owner asked for at least two metres of cabin headroom using only one and half metres of height! Another wanted a lift capable of going up to the top of the mast with his guests so they could drink and watch the sun set. We managed to persuade him that a chopper would do it much more efficiently and safely. My favourite however, was the guest who wanted his 50 metre yacht to have a glass bottom so that he did not need to get wet while watching the fish. He wanted it to be a sort of sailing snorkeling, or snorkeling while couch potatoing experience.

The Principality of Monaco launches the commission

"Monaco: Capital of Yachting" Be it fashion, cars, watchmaking or design, cities the world over are often recognized as being centres of excellence for an aspect of our society. And today superyachts have their own capital in Monaco. Indeed, the Principality has for decades fostered a deliberate policy of hospitality, services, leisure activities and security, attracting owners of the world’s largest yachts.

Among the actions planned by the “Monaco: Capital of Yachting” Commission for 2013 are: • Increase awareness among Monaco authorities of the Yachting sector’s economic weight: a “yacht” is a mark of social significance and generates revenue for the State, • Develop a charter, and the Monaco flag, • Initiate far-reaching actions to encourage owners to settle in the Principality, • Promote the “Monaco Yachting” Destination on an international scale. To address the issue of the quality of welcome and lack of places in Monaco’s harbours, the SEPM responsible for both ports is working on both areas: • Optimization of an internal mooring plan, • Survey of Mediterranean harbors.

THE STORY BEHIND YOUR YACHT

WOOD fOrEVEr paCT “Beyond yachts, we picture the wood used for its construction. Behind wood, we imagine the forest. In the forest, we envision the blossoming biodiversity. And we take great pleasure in thinking about the populations who take part in maintaining this ecological heritage.” believing that this vision is shared by the greatest number, the Prince albert II of Monaco foundation, with the support of the Monaco Yacht show, launched the Wood forever Pact in 2010, to promote wood sourced from sustainably managed forests. 1863-2013 MONTE-CARLO SBM CELEBRATES ITS 150TH

ANNIVERSARY

In

1863, under the auspices of its founder, François Blanc, the Société des Bains

de Mer et du Cercle des Etrangers à Monaco is born, known today as Monte-Carlo SBM. Its founder had accepted an invitation from Prince Charles III of Monaco, following a visionary inspiration from his mother Princess Caroline. Through the development of the establishments included in the Société des Bains de Mer, a new neighbourhood will emerge, on the top of the Spélugues plateau, named Monte-Carlo in 1866. The inauguration of the new Casino in 1863 is the founding act of the Société des Bains de Mer. Adjacent to the Casino, François Blanc then creates a Palace (Hôtel de Paris), a social gathering place and restaurant, the Café Divan (future Café de Paris) and a spa dedicated to health and well-being (Les Thermes Marins).

bERNARd d’AlESSANdRI, General Secretary of the monaco yacht club "The Monaco Yacht Show has found its legitimate place not only through all the hard work of its organisers but also because the Monaco Principality is a natural and historical stopover for the leisure yachting industry. Following on from the symposiums organised under the aegis of the “La Belle Classe Superyachts” label, this first Monaco Yacht Summit, which gathers all those involved in the yachting industry, proves once again that Monaco is indeed the Capital of Yachting."

STAR AMONG THE STARS

THE 2013 MYS PRIX DU DESIGN The Next September Monaco Yacht Show will award the best superyacht exhibited by a shipyard at the 23rd show edition. If yacht enthusiasts and specialists all over the world praise the spectacular fleet of superyachts unveiled at the Monaco show every year, the Organisers, in collaboration with the French Crystal manufacturer Baccarat for the s econd consecutive year, will place one superyacht on top of the roof with the 2013 MYS Prix du Design. Since 2003, the Prix du Design singles out the yacht that has the most innovative, elegant and distinguished design at the Monaco Yacht Show. The superyacht has to be presented by a shipyard. Considering that the world Top 10 shipyards attend the show and the importance for them to promote their expertise in new builds, no doubt the Jury’s choice will be a real challenge.
