EDITORIAL LUC PETTAVINO ANNOUNCES ANOTHER UPCOMING SOLD OUT SHOW A PERFECT CURTAIN CALL AS HE BIDS FAREWELL TO THE MONACO YACHT SHOW
Can the show’s momentum generated by 100 breathtaking yachts gathered in Port Hercules, 500 exhibitors in luxurious pavilions, and 27,000 attendees actually influence the economic situation of a whole sector of activity? These four memorable days at the end of the summer create a unique platform for one-on-one conversations, networking with existing and potential clients, and productive B2B meetings, which all contribute to generating interesting leads and valuable discussions that can convert into short or medium term business. It is then a most welcome stimulus to the yachting industry, helping it maintain an optimistic outlook. With the help of a dedicated team of professionals, a loyal customer base, the majestic setting that the Principality of Monaco represents and the ongoing support of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, the Monaco Yacht Show continues to be the market leader, year after year, fulfilling the expectations of its clients. The 20th edition of the Monaco Yacht Show was sold out months ago. This is indeed great news, allowing visitors to make far in advance the arrangements for their trip to Monte Carlo and all participants to confidently prepare themselves, whether for the launch of a new yacht, the unveiling of new products and services, the organisation of social events, the consistent media plans around their presence in Monaco.
Luc Pettavino with the new Monaco Yacht Show Managing Director, Gaëlle Tallarida
After 18 years of loyal service to this event, I have come to the decision that it is now time for me to step aside. After giving this a great deal of thought, and discussing it at length with my family, I am determined to dedicate more time to my various non-profit initiatives, mainly related to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. I thank you all for this unique experience. It has been a real privilege and honour to build this event into the world premier yacht show that it has become. It was also a great responsibility, as it is associated with very high expectations. Needless to say, I was never alone in this endeavour. The gifted team of people that make it all happen and share the values; research of excellence, consistent commitment, availability, corporate social responsibility, creativity, etc. remains in place: Gaëlle Tallarida who takes over as from now as Managing Director, assisted by Audrey Baylac, Eva Esteban, Aurelia Ferraris, Federica Ficarra, Eva Munoz, Oriane Odasso, Johan Pizzardini and all our loyal suppliers.

Again, let me simply THANK YOU and wish you ALL THE BEST! Enjoy this magazine, Enjoy your Summer.
Some of you may know of my dedication to help research on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy through the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies. The exciting and promising times of therapeutic trials have arrived. The cure is not ready yet, but energy, attention, focus are more than ever required to source funds, gather and finance Scientists, Researchers, Clinicians, Chemists, etc. Through the support of HSH Prince Albert II, the Monaco Yacht Show and the organisation of Only Watch we have been able to raise 2 million EUR every two years. We will continue to do so in the future together with Informa and the MYS Team who will donate 50% of the entrance fees and co-organize the 4th Only Watch auction which will be held on 22nd September 2011.

ULYSSE NARDIN Since the manufacturer’s earliest days more than 160 years ago when its founder, Ulysse Nardin, began making marine chronometers in a mountainous location in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, the watchmaking powerhouse has continually proved that challenges present intriguing opportunities worthy of exploration. It is these explorations that have resulted in Ulysse Nardin’s unprecedented inventions in horology. Science, innovation and imagination are its muses and technological advancement – combined with stellar artisanship – is its beacon. Embodying, cultivating and bringing this philosophy to life through every Ulysse Nardin timepiece are President Rolf W. Schnyder and Dr. Ludwig Oechslin. A masterful meeting of the minds, they are the visionaries and pioneers behind Ulysse Nardin today. Going against the mainstream current of Swiss watchmaking, they joined forces in 1983, when Schnyder purchased the company and sought Oechslin’s expertise and free-thinking approach to timepiece engineering and design. Schnyder was astounded by a wall clock astrolabe Oechslin had built after restoring the Farnesian clock in the Vatican museum and requested that Oechslin reduce the astrolabe to a wristwatch. Thus, the Astrolabium Galileo Galilei, the first watch from Oechslin’s Trilogy of Time series, was born, returning the revered watchmaker to the spotlight and securing an entry in the Guinness Book of Records. Schnyder knew that with the Astrolabium as the company’s first milestone under his ownership, he would be able to elevate Ulysse Nardin to an unsurpassed level of ingenuity, originality and quality. His foresight was correct.

Moonstruck Schnyder and his tour de force dream team, consisting of Oechslin, executive vice president Pierre Gygax, chief engineer Lucas Humair and a team of highly proficient watchmakers, have catapulted the vertically integrated brand to a new dimension, positioning Ulysse Nardin as the king of innovation. Ulysse Nardin has been the recipient of 4,300-plus awards in watchmaking – 18 of them gold medals – and has received the greatest number of patents in mechanical watchmaking. As well, Ulysse Nardin was honored by Revolution magazine with its prestigious “New Technology” award for InnoVision, a spectacular watch that represented the groundbreaking use of silicium, among ten additional technical feats. This creation gives a proud nod to Ulysse Nardin’s remarkable FREAK, one of the cleverest timepieces ever developed and the first to use silicium. Introducing Ulysse Nardin’s Dual Ulysse Escapement in silicium, the FREAK ignited success. Ultra minimal in appearance and boasting no true case, crown or hands with the movement pivoted to indicate time, the FREAK showcased Ulysse Nardin’s scientific knowledge and progressive engineering like no other. Awarded the “Innovation Prize” (along with

the Genghis Khan, GMT + Perpetual and the Sonata), the FREAK rocked the Swiss watch community and the world. For 2010, the FREAK surprises, once again, with the FREAK Diavolo – an exceptional timepiece illustrating Ulysse Nardin’s perfection of the application of new technology, such as photolithography; the use of the best and latest-developed materials, like silicium and LIGA nickel, at core locations; advancements in power and accuracy of the tourbillon carrousel (developed entirely in-house); and the addition of a flying tourbillon indicating the seconds. Other landmark achievements by Ulysse Nardin include Oechslin’s completion of the Trilogy of Time, featuring the Astrolabium, the Planetarium and the Tellurium. And, in 2009, Oechslin returned to the cosmos for inspiration and revealed the Moonstruck, which concentrates on the moon and its effects on the earth. Steadfast in its journey to remain in the lead, Ulysse Nardin strides forward, looking to its own universe – its leadership, master craftsmen and their dedication to the art of creating mechanical timepieces – to plot its
course. As the first to utilize novel materials; forge unconventional relationships, like its joint venture with microparts technology company Sigatec; and bring forth fresh design sensibility, Ulysse Nardin surpasses form and function. It remains on a quest for more information, inventiveness and beauty. It is passion that guides its ingenious mind and momentum. www.ulysse-nardin.com

THE PRINCE ALBERT II OF
MONACO FOUNDATION
MAKES A COMMITMENT AGAINST DEFORESTATION AND RAISES THE YACHTING WORLD’S AWARENESS The tropical rainforests house at least 75% of the world’s biodiversity. The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the association MC2D have decided, for 2010 - the Year of Biodiversity to focus on the necessary and essential protection of these ecosystems by launching a campaign entitled “Monaco makes a commitment against deforestation” to promote, in Monaco, the use of wood harvested from sustainably managed forests. Destruction of the tropical rainforests accounts for more than 20% of greenhouse gas emissions and furthermore leads to soil degradation, loss of biodiversity and the exclusion of the local populations. One of the most effective ways of combating this plague is to give the forests an economic value through appropriate management. Rational forestry practices enable us to target species and the trees depending on their age, whilst at the same time respecting biodiversity-rich areas and the people living there. Consequently this enables forest regeneration and generates economic value for the indigenous people. One of the means of combating deforestation consists of producing, marketing and using certified wood. In the Principality, several initiatives have already been taken in this respect: • His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco is patron of UNEP’s “one billion tree campaign”. As such, and through the activities of his Foundation mentioned below, the Prince has become one of the leaders for forest protection.
• The “Association Monégasque de la Protection de la Nature” carries out reforestation activities on a regular basis in the forest areas bordering Monaco which were damaged by fires, in cooperation with the French National Forestry Commission. • The Government of Monaco has implemented a responsible purchasing policy for all state construction programmes, recommending the exclusive use of certified wood in its specifications. • The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation supports an expert training project in the Congo Basin which helps foresters to achieve Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, a project for the education and cultural strengthening of the Kayapo Indians in the Amazon Forest, a conservation project for the Siberut primary forest in Indonesia, a study with the Global Canopy Program on the economic value of the tropical rainforests, and finally a project to create new nature parks in the heart of Amazonian Peru with the Field Museum of Natural History. • MC2D and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation are keen to support such efforts by developing the use of certified wood throughout the country and to make the Principality an example in this field.

THE MONACO YACHT SHOW JOINS FORCES WITH THE PRINCE ALBERT II OF MONACO FOUNDATION
The first round table on this initiative was organised in Monaco on Thursday January 28th, the goal of which was to promote the use of certified wood in the Principality.
For 2010, the MYS has decided to support the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and increase the yachting community’s awareness of the deforestation issue.
This round table was led by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the association MC2D, the Monaco government, FSC France and the Forest Trust. Executives from the yachting, building and trade sectors attended the meeting and avenues for developing this initiative have already been opened.
This new cooperation highlights Monaco’s priority to set up international projects for protecting trees. The MYS will follow the realization of these closely and provide financial support, in line with its constant efforts to decrease its environmental impact.
The Monaco Yacht Show joined the Foundation’s initiative to raise the yachting world’s awareness of the stakes linked to deforestation.
The natural rapprochement between the two entities took root in 2006 when His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco chose the world’s number one superyacht event to present his Foundation to the major actors in the yachting industry.
Wood is used for building ship bridges, structures and furniture. These products can come from sustainably managed wood exploitations or innovative techniques allowing the use of alternatives to wood with characteristics and aesthetic similar to the greatest tree species. With a more sustainable use of wood, shipyards have now the opportunity to add new environmental criteria to their lists of specifications for future constructions.
The MYS has been committed to international environmental projects since 2005 and every single aspect of the show takes the fragility of our planet into consideration: printing on recycled or FSC paper, sorting recyclables within the show venue, supporting fair trade, and using organic cotton to produce its clothing collection.

BUILDING GREEN FOR
HEDONISTS By Nick Jeffery
“We build boats for hedonists” states Lürssen’s Michael Breman, “so looks will always change because owners are individually-minded.” Feadship’s Henk de Vries says “We see a definite trend in more refined and efficient designs, slender hulls, X-bows, to achieve longer range.”
Assuming hedonists will still exist as the next generation of superyachts take shape – and that owners have not all traded up to exploration ‘space vessels’ sporting solar film and sending gas molecules back to Earth for analysis while in search of Pandora – then we are likely to see some rapid evolution in superyachts. As the economic climate for the superyacht industry went through one of its toughest year in 2008-2009 – and sales directors suddenly found that buyers were more interested in selling their new-build slot rather than paying to reserve one up to five years away (at the top brands) – builders reacted fast. Refit departments popped up even. Who better to refit a boat than the original builder-design team? A comparative study of whether it is more environmentally friendly to ‘recycle’ an existing superyacht or build new would be interesting, values put aside. GL Watson & Co is keeping tight-lipped about the newly relaunched 1930, 91.4-metre, Nahlin – now diesel-electric propelled… Designers like to occupy cool office spaces – and work better for it – but other than an ergonomic chair plus computers and software, their fixed overheads are already paid for (training the brain) with ‘refurbishments’ covered via thinking, reading, travelling and social intercourse. Marketing to clients is relatively subtle and costeffective while trips to events – Monaco Yacht Show being number one – to build relationships are also enjoyable rewards for the team. For builders it is harder, especially
since the average superyacht has grown so much in the past two decades, meaning bigger premises and larger fixed overheads. “Superyacht builders are ultimately responsible for a new build and take all the risks” says Theo Hooning, Secretary General of the Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss). “They have big overheads and have to create what the owner desires while respecting the classification society regulations and what’s technically feasible”. Perini Navi’s Fabrizio Sgariglia believes owners are becoming more demanding but that the world economic situation has not stopped progress even though the growth will be in ‘medium-sized’ superyachts (of around 40 metres). When asked about the power of the brand he responds “the future is evolving around quality rather than bargains!” Perini is doing research on another Maltese Falcon type rig, requiring considerable investment. Sgariglia adds that “there is more incentive to buy a sail boat now with new regattas & events on the calendar. Owners have discovered this is fun and rather than simply cruising they can invite different guests on board to race.”
18 19
Amnesia IV: 2010 look from Redman Whiteley Dixon by Benetti
Events such as the new-format Rendezvous, in Monaco, with timed runs, cruises in company and Poker runs for tenders, offer a regatta flavour and glamour for both power and sail owners. Power superyacht builds still outnumber sail by some 5:1 according to SYBAss. Motor yachts’ propulsion systems tend to be below the waterline so it is less obvious what is driving your vessel unless flying an auxiliary kite… Perhaps a funnel-less design will be the future tell-tale sign of emission-free fuel cells in less-ismore fashion. William S. Smith III of Trinity Yachts in the USA believes “the large motor yacht market will continue to be dependent upon military and commercial segments of the marine market for major improvements and/or changes in propulsion, systems and construction”. He says that the typical motor yacht client wants the “latest and greatest” but is not prepared to pay for the R&D of new technology but they do wish to use well-proven systems that are tried and tested. “Eliminating man hours wherever possible through the use of capital expenditure for sophisticated machinery and the continued use of subcontractors from around the world” Panthalassa: Foster + Partners architects’ interior by Perini Navi

BUILDING GREEN FOR
HEDONISTS
AEON: mastless design for 2020 by Feadship the two pictures
will be their emphasis. At the same time Smith believes there will be more increases in yachts’ technical performance due to design, technology and construction techniques continuing to evolve and improve at a fairly rapid pace. Combined with “military look” paint jobs so as not to attract attention in developing cruising grounds, some of these movable residences will be more private and more “green” according to Smith, adding that “there will probably always be a certain level of conspicuous consumption by newly rich people from all parts of the world”. Benetti’s Vincenzo Poerio agrees that there will be a tendency for more privacy and less “show-off” with increased use of recyclable materials. Nevertheless, “as one of the most expensive luxury items in the world, it is like a beautiful work of art that everybody would like to possess”. He believes the market will force the industry to become more transparent as clients are more sensitive to the financial aspect. But, “even though yachting is one of the most fascinating and complex sectors of luxury goods, it is the one with the lowest profits”. Henk de Vries of Feadship points out that new construction is not going to get too much cheaper, because of the large labour component. But they will always progress, “simply because it can be done, we are always asked to go beyond the past”. He believes
the essence of quality is provided by continuously improving the people on the shop floor, in Feadship’s case, often generation by generation. The AEON motor yacht concept studied four imaginary Feadship owners of the future in 2020 – all of them with disposable wealth and not looking for a quick return on investment – comprising ‘the chosen one’, ‘the self made (wo)man’, ‘the dreamer’ and ‘the utopian’. All scenarios had a common thread – low impact on the
environment is essential. Being green may not make a huge direct difference but it does influence others, set an example of one’s values and allow one to get on with enjoying life – and yachting is by definition about pleasure. It’s still fun – and not everybody realises how much energy that exterior air-conditioning consumes…

BUILDING GREEN FOR
HEDONISTS
If the next generation of superyachts will depend on taste and lifestyles then they may also be designed around shore-based infrastructures built for the future. You don’t need planning permission to position a six-storey yacht in Monaco and, as ever-larger boats make Port Hercules their home port, the umbilical cords are becoming bigger. Shorepower energy supply and waste disposal were among the items discussed at one of the Yacht Club de Monaco’s ‘La Belle Classe Superyachts’ dinner debates, attended by top superyacht builders of the world and industry movers and shakers, as they look for ways of preserving and respecting the environment. Perhaps yachts will even donate power to ports, saved whilst at sea from solar or wind generators one day, receiving a berth credit. Lürssen – featured under a ‘Green Glamour’ cover story headline in a recent edition of Boat Exclusive – believe engineering advances “will continue apace, especially in emission efficiency. Boats will be run in intelligent fashion to keep costs down and impact on environment low”. As the major big brand superyacht builders adapt and invest, a new breed of “green hedonist” owners appears to be on the horizon too – with not a whiff of smoke wafting from generator exhausts around their decks and lap pools as they watch the emission-free F1 Grand Prix cars of the future silently speed between their guests and the Yacht Club de Monaco’s terraces opposite in the new clubhouse – eco-friendly too, its air-conditioning cooled by the seawater and its construction only a step away from that of a superyacht. The
Importance ofNetWORKING At the Monaco Yacht Show
Networking is an important factor in the success of any business but it is probably fair to say that in Superyachting it is not only very important but essential for everyone involved. The Monaco Yacht Show provides the perfect venue for networking. Top yachting journalists and superyacht industry commentators; Frances and Michael Howorth explain how and why.
The art of successful business networking lies in the ability to meet the important people with who you would like to work and to quickly impress upon them that you should work together. It is with this in mind that professional conference organisers create seminars, attracting people of similar interests to attend, to listen to industry leaders and invited guests as they make programmed presentations. Yet in poll after poll attendees of these events say that the real value of attending is not in what goes on during the sessions, but what happens between and after. It is, as the crowd spills out from a seminar for a beverage or a meal together that the networking begins and that, say attendees, is where the real value of attending these events lies.
There are an increasing number of specialised superyacht seminars, conventions, forums and promotional events being set up around the world. Many of them cost several thousands of Euros in fees just to get inside the door. Yet one of the most cost effective methods of networking with industry leaders and HNWI’s whose interests lie in superyachting can be found simply by attending the Monaco Yacht Show. The Monaco Yacht Show has, over the twenty years it has been in existence, built its reputation on the very simple knowledge that the principle players in the superyacht world attend each year because of what the event offers the world of superyachts. In essence it has become the world’s foremost showcase
24 25
for the industry that it promotes and it is, as a consequence, inevitable that the world’s most important people will and do attend the show each year. Where better than the MYS to network? Where else in the world will you find the finest shipyards, the top yacht designers, the principle brokerage houses and the best superyacht equipment suppliers all gathered in one spot? Where else will you find such a profusion of owners, qualified buyers and sellers of superyachts walking the docks of the world’s most chic of superyacht harbours? It is the Monaco Yacht Show that brings them altogether and it is at the show that some of the most important networking takes place. The show offers no end of excellent opportunities to meet and greet friends and colleagues, old and new. Walking on the docks and in the tents is a networking opportunity open to anyone but an invitation to one of the exclusive parties is better still. On the eve of the opening day of the show, Camper & Nicholsons International
will again be hosting the first of its social events at the Yacht Club de Monaco, in association with Banque Jacob Saffra SA. This hugely popular networking party is an annual event and has been hosted by CNI over the last six years. It brings over 450 clients and industry representatives together at the exclusive yacht club for cocktails, champagne and canapés. It is expected but not yet confirmed, that this year Burgess will once again outdo their own reputation for throwing splendid parties. In past years they have held them each year at the Show, using their base at the outer extremity of Jetée Nord from which to serve drinks to top industry specialists seeking to mix and mingle. Security is high at events such as these and entry is permitted to only those whose names appear on official party lists and it is definitely seen as bad manners to gatecrash a party in Monaco to which you have not been invited. The famous Monaco Yacht Shows Captain’s Party will again be held at the prestigious Fairmont Hotel Monte Carlo on Friday 24th September at 8 pm where about 600
privileged guests are invited by the party’s sponsors to talk business and get networking while sipping a glass of champagne. Another important event, considered by those in the know to be a really hot ticket, is again held at the prestigious Monaco Yacht Club. This time, it is the Charter Yacht Captains Awards Dinner and this year, as every year, it is hosted by Fraser Yachts who use the occasion to present awards to the top Captains and a watch made especially for the occasion to their Charter Captain of the Year. Edmiston take over the top floor of the Port Palace Hotel and use it as a platform to host show meetings and networking opportunities for their exclusive guests. Other top brokerage houses use the upper stories of their two decked show pavilions to similar great effect.

Shipyards have been quick to take up these larger stands at the Monaco Yacht Show because the added floor area permits extra space to be used to entertain prospective clients privately in comfort. High up on the hill, the Hermitage Hotel is home to another top networking event. Each year the magazine title Boat International hosts a splendid cocktail party on the hotels terrace, which affords guests a wonderful opportunity to sample hors d’oeuvres, drink quality champagne and gaze down upon the yachts docked in the port. This all ticket soirÊe is definitely one of the most sought after networking parties where again security is high and casual visitors discouraged. Invitations to some evening events are a little easier to come by. The Monaco Yacht Show offers exhibitors the opportunity when booking display stands, to enter pavilions grouped by country. This then allows exhibitors to hold an evening drinks party inside their area and so it is that the parties thrown each year in the Dutch, British and New Zealand pavilions have attracted a loyal
following of people seeking to network and enjoy socialising with like minded souls at the same time. Lunchtime parties are frequently organised by professional groups whose interest lies inside superyachting. Chief among these are those organised at La Rascasse Restaurant by the top London law firms of HBJ Gateley Wareing who, along with Hill Dickinson, both provide networking opportunities over a pleasant glass of wine and a bite to eat. Corporate Service providers and VAT experts Dominion Marine are known to throw a good networking party in the evening and Awlgrip the paint suppliers throw a mighty good bash that is well attended by young superyacht crews who are equally keen on working the net. Perhaps some of the most exclusive networking opportunities at the Monaco Yacht Show are the small and intimate parties held over dinner on board the yachts docked within the show.
Some of the easiest ways of networking do not even require an invitation at all. All the visitor needs to do is walk on to the stand of a show exhibitor ask a question and the networking opportunities open up. No matter how the opportunity initially presents itself at the Monaco Yacht Show it is always prudent to follow up contact after the event. This can be done by email, post, telephone or personal visits, what is important is that it is the Show that has presented the first contact point and to maximise on the value of networking the follow up actions need to be taken.

OTHER DO’S AND DON’TS OF NETWORKING INCLUDE
The
Importance of
There are many specialist one-on-one training courses that explain specifically how to network and there are as many theories on how to succeed at networking, as there are books on the subject. One thing on which they are all agreed is that it pays to do your homework and choose events well and as everyone knows the top annual event in superyachting is the Monaco Yacht Show.
Dos
Don’ts
• Look the part; people attending the Monaco Yacht Show are professionals and they use the casual-chic look when they dress. Make sure your own appearance does not negatively impact on you.
• Do not try to meet everyone at the Monaco Yacht Show. There are simply too many, so focus on a few and concentrate on spending quality time with them.
• Know some facts about the people and or companies attending the Monaco Yacht Show. It is a good idea to study the shows Website (www.monacoyachtshow.com) which contains many company profiles of those exhibiting. • Take along a plentiful supply of business cards. It is better to have too many than run out before the show ends on the Saturday. In an emergency Business cards can be printed quickly by Graphic Services, Monaco, info@gs-gs.mc. • Be patient; instant on the spot results are very rare networking is just the first step in creating a long lasting relationship. • Be helpful to others at the show, you never know who the person standing next to you on the dock is. He may be an owner or someone contemplating buying a new superyacht. • Introduce yourself to the hosts of any of the parties you attend at the show. Thank them for having you and find out how you can be included at future events they organise. • If this is your first visit to the Monaco Yacht Show find a mentor to show you the ropes. • Have fun! That is the principle, guiding factor behind the serious business side of the show. It is perfectly understandable to be nervous when first walking into a room full of strangers, but it really helps to smile and relax!
• Do not come across as being aggressive, instead, be casual when starting a conversation. • Do not stay in a large group, instead, move around and try to stand out by yourself. • Do not speak too loudly, it is easy to become animated but no one wants to be near to someone who cannot control their own volume. • Do not spend too much time with one group of people, be respectful of their time constraints. If you want to have a really formal meeting, it is best to thank them for their time and schedule a more formal meeting for later on in the show. • Do not be insincere, compliments are nice, but avoid over doing it.

THE
MASTER’S
TOUCH
A growing trend amongst yacht owners consists in displaying masterpieces and contemporary art onboard their superyachts. Laurent Perignon talks to Gilles Dyan and Didier Viltart, respectively President Opera Gallery Worldwide and Director of Opera Gallery Monaco, about the whys and hows.
30 31
How often do you have buyers asking for an art piece to go onboard their yacht? Do they actually advise or you find out afterwards? Opera Gallery: In Monaco, quite regularly.
Interestingly, these are the same clients that we meet in London, New York, Paris or Monaco who come to us for advice on works of art to have at home, in their estates or apartments. But in Monaco they also specifically mention their yachts as the other place where they’d like to display the paintings or sculptures. And they are usually quite straightforward about it; they know that their yacht is a special place, both technically and emotionally, and that showcasing artworks onboard requires a specific approach.
Paintings and sculptures? OG: Mostly paintings. Sculptures are actually

“ showcasing artworks onboard requires a specific approach ”
a lot more fragile than paintings and cannot be easily moved around when the seas are rough. Or they need to be properly fixed to the yacht structure, which can be quite an issue, not to mention the weight of such artworks and the danger of someone accidentally damaging the piece. Paintings, oil on canvas especially, are a lot easier to handle and offer greater flexibility. Not only are they meant to last more than a lifetime and are very resistant to all natural elements, but they can also be moved in and out anytime, with not much of a risk to damage the artwork. Many owners bring them onboard when they are onboard for a while, and return them home – or to the safe – once they leave the yacht.
What about security issues? And other potential disasters such as fire? OG: Besides sinking, fire is probably the only serious danger facing paintings onboard. But then, there are certainly fewer cases of yachts on fire than there are houses burning down. The same goes for theft. With crew onboard at all times, and tight security, a yacht is less likely to be visited by unwanted guests than a villa. And here we’re talking while in port. Once at sea, there’s only you and masterpieces: your yacht and your art collection.
What kind of art? OG: A strong mix of Pop Art and
Contemporary Art – very trendy – as well as what we can coin as « classics », from the Impressionists to Picasso. I suppose the success of the contemporary artists results from the interest of yacht owners in forward thinking design, new materials and technology. Their art collections fully relate to the types of yacht they own. There is a very close connection between yachting and art collecting. This is something we did not fully realize until we opened here in Monaco.
Can you explain further? OG: A super (or mega) yacht is a very
personal, private, intimate and emotional place : she is created to the taste of the owner inside out even more than his or her villa will be, simply because it is not a living place as such, it is a place to enjoy. The « housing » functionality disappears to give in to emotional sense. A yacht is unique, both in design and personalization; and so is a work of art. The relationship between a work of art and the collector is equally personal, private, intimate and emotional. The choice

The
master’s touch
of a painting brings personalization of onboard space to another level, whereby the owner fully realizes his own introspective equation. There is a client of ours who once confided that he would reach the ultimate sense of well-being when contemplating an Impressionist masterpiece hanging in the main salon of his yacht, once at sea with no one around. Similarly, we recently installed a painting onboard a large sailing yacht that had just been delivered and was almost bare of any furniture. Set amidst the clean minimalist lines of that magnificent contemporary yacht, the painting simply came to life – and made the owner extremely pleased with his acquisition.
But a yacht has limited space. How do you deal with such constraints at a time when contemporary art can be quite monumental? OG: If a yacht owner is very interested in the
works of a specific artist but understand it might be difficult to accommodate any of his or her works onboard, we approach the said artist and commission him to execute a new painting that can meet our requirements. We have permanent dialogue ongoing with a large number of contemporary artists we not only represent but exchange ideas with. It is an essential aspect of our work, which in many cases will help achieve that synergy between an art collector and the artist of his or her choice.
How international is the art/yacht market? OG: We realized how the yachting clientele is
closely connected with the art world when we opened in Monaco, two years ago. Clients come from all countries and are international both in style and from a business standpoint. Our first gallery opened in Singapore in 1994 – which has given us an edge for all Asian art, and more particularly the new Chinese contemporary artists. We then opened in Paris in 1998, and have opened one new gallery every year since 2000, to reach a total of 11 now, with a second gallery to open in Singapore this year in one of the « integrated resorts » (casinos) and a second one in Dubai too. We are also particularly excited by the prospect of our future opening in Beijing in January 2011 – certainly, the Chinese market is very promising, and we suppose it is the same on the yachting scene.
Do you need special insurance for artworks onboard? OG: Yes and no. It is a special situation
and therefore yacht owners should discuss further with their insurance company or broker how best to insure the works of art they wish to bring onboard. If need be, we can recommend a number of them we regularly work with. They tend to be UKbased, probably because yachting originated from there and these companies are very experienced in yachting matters. But there are some in Monaco that can provide such services just as well.
“ The owners’ art collections fully relate to the types of yacht they own ” What other recommendations would you give a yacht owner interested in purchasing an art piece to place onboard his/her vessel? OG: Just make sure the air conditioning
airflow does not blow right into the painting. This is probably the only danger clients may not think of that is actually potentially the most damaging. It’s good to have air condition onboard, but there is no need to overdo it thinking that it will protect a painting better. Whilst canvas is reasonably flexible and the painting can stretch or shrink, depending on whether the air is dry or humid, it would shrink beyond an acceptable limit if the air becomes too dry, and the paint could start cracking. Once this is understood, there is no reason not to enjoy the contemplation of a masterpiece onboard.

The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, which this year celebrates its centenary, opens its galleries to contemporary art for the first time, to present a major exhibition of works by celebrated British artist Damien Hirst. Cornucopia is the title of the exhibition, which spans the last 15 years of the artist’s career and comprises over 60 key works, including early paintings and sculptures. The exhibition is presented with the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco. Gathering together an exceptional group of works, displayed throughout the Museum in the company of the existing and remarkable collection of marine fauna, the exhibition stages a conversation between the past and the present, between art and science. The dialogue between the museum’s collection of specimens and aquariums and the artist’s work allows the viewer to consider each discipline in a new light. Art and science here become mutually enlightening. Commenting on the exhibition, Robert Calcagno, director of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco said: “Displayed in parallel, Art and Science mutually reinforce one another. Cornucopia is a conversation
between the past and the present, a dynamic dialogue between art and science. The juxtaposition changes how you see both the artist’s oeuvres and the museum’s collection. It creates a new visual dialogue. This is why Damien Hirst has been invited to show his creations in the very heart of the Museum’s collections at this important moment in the history of the institution.” The display brings together seminal early works such as Away from the Flock, Divided (1995), in which the artist suspended a sheep in formaldehyde in a glass tank, with the more recent After The Flood (2008), featuring a dove in flight suspended in formaldehyde and The Forgiveness (2008), a nine-metre-long stainless steel cabinet with 3,502 butterflies and other insects displayed along the shelves. From the exquisitely composed butterfly wing paintings, the Psalms (2008), to the monumental sculptures Sensation (2003), and The Virgin Mother (2005), the exhibition reveals the breadth of the artist’s creative output over the last decade and a half.

The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco Prince Albert I of Monaco, inaugural speech, 29 March 1910 “I am thrilled and excited to be showing my work at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco and in particular look forward to exhibiting key works from my ‘Natural History’ series in the context of the Museum’s beautiful exhibition spaces and collection. It is a wonderful combination of art and science, the two subjects that fascinate me.” Inaugurated on 29 March 1910 by its founder, Prince Albert I of Monaco, the Oceanographic Museum is part of the Oceanographic Institute, Fondation Albert Ier Prince de Monaco. It is an exceptional institution with 5,000 sq metres of exhibition space, dedicated entirely to the sea. The museum has a remarkable collection of marine fauna and houses a world-famous aquarium with 4,000 species of fish and over 200 families of invertebrates. Its latest creation, the ‘Shark Lagoon’, reveals the extraordinary diversity and colours of the coral reef and its inhabitants. A pioneer in coral culturing, the Oceanographic Museum is the first true modern scientific aquarium with the specificity of reconstructing complete ecosystems. The Museum seeks to bring art and science closer together, as called for by its Founder, and to continually develop the public’s understanding of science. Its objective is to ensure a better knowledge of the sea in order to ensure its protection. The Museum provides a unique platform for the public to learn and to be consistently surprised by the wonders of the sea.

The Monaco Grimaldi presents its main summer exhibition
While in 2010 attention was focused on Asia and the World’s Fair in Shanghai, this summer the Monaco Grimaldi Forum is featuring Japan, another economic and cultural giant from the region in an exhibition intended to surprise the public! From 14 July to 12 September 2010, the next summer show at Monaco’s Grimaldi Forum offers a journey from the 18th century through the present, from Kyoto to Tokyo, along the historical Tokaido road linking Japan’s ancient and new capitals. Because its real objective is to demonstrate how Japan became one of the leading actors of the modern world, the show proposes an avant-garde conception in an unprecedented voyage through space and time in Japanese culture.
38 39
By underscoring the existing ties between traditional culture rooted in 18th century Kyoto and avant-garde forms of artistic expression in Tokyo today, the exhibition will attract both admirers of traditional Japanese culture as well as more recent facets including mangas, animation films and a variety of other High Tech descendents from ancient times. Reflecting Japan’s success in blending history and culture on a daily basis, past and present, the Grimaldi Forum will unite two generations, those representing traditional culture symbolized by the all-powerful « samurais » and those of modern consumers who relish « mangas » and animation films, most distinctly « made in Japan ».
Nearly six hundred objects illustrate this history, including fine quality classified « cultural heritage » works in collections from Tokyo’s and Kyoto’s national museums; further pieces were obtained in loans from western institutions: the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Paris’ Guimet Museum Paris, the Royal Art and History museums in Brussels, the Stibbert Museum in Florence, Asian Art Museums from Venice, Torino, Berlin and San Francisco, as well as numerous private collections.
Kyoto is unveiled from its medieval epic, abounding in artistic treasures reflecting the supremacy of its principal actors until the 16th century: samurais, monks and intellectuals, immortalized in the finest jewels of Japanese literature. A pivotal historical route, the Tokaido ensured a line of communication between two poles, the country’s heartbeat with the emblematic Mount Fuji on the horizon, an inspiration to creative spirits throughout the centuries. Tokyo is first visited during the post-World War II period from 1950 to 1964, symbolized by Japanese cinema and its mythical directors such as Mizoguchi or Kurosawa who reflect the spirit of reconstruction, a prelude to the great architectural renaissance dominated by Kenzo Tange. From 1965, the technological revolution takes hold; the emergence of robotics, accompanied by a resurgence of popular culture, notably mangas, transposed from animated films. A discovery presented from both cultural and entertainment angles. Finally, with the economic crisis and trauma stemming from the 1995 earthquake that extensively damaged Kobe, nature provided a brutal impetus for environmentally oriented design. The exhibition finishes with contemporary art in a country where the cultural scene witnessed a rapid fusion between the traditional aesthetic and an omnipresent technology, effectively bridging past and present.

The glamour and chic of Monte Carlo is being combined with the vibrancy and sophistication of Marrakech. The creation of the Jawhar Resort, Spa and Private Residences, forms part of a planned new luxury district in the Menara area of Marrakech. This new luxury estate is being created by development and investment specialist Aerium Atlas Management and will be managed by renowned hotel operator Monte-Carlo SBM.
Monte Carlo meets Marrakech with unveiling of Jawhar estate
The 14 hectare Jawhar Estate (Jawhar means “Jewel” in Arabic), uniquely located in the heart of Marrakech, provides 25 private residences, a 93 all-suite 5-star hotel (MonteCarlo SBM’s first resort out-side of Monaco), a top gastronomic restaurant and a Wellness Centre and Spa. Set in generously landscaped gardens, Jawhar Resort will form an integral part of a new luxury district framed by the Menara Gardens that will provide an international shopping boulevard, deluxe hotels, cultural and leisure facilities together with a landmark museum. The 25 private residences are set in generously landscaped gardens with private pools. This residential quarter offers views over the Atlas Mountains and has its own private access road and gated security within the resort. It also benefits from “residents only” pedestrian pathways connecting the residential quarter to the green boulevards, feature gardens, hotel and leisure facilities of the resort combining total privacy with 5 star service including 24 hour front-desk, concierge and hotel/bell facilities.
74 75
The 25 private residences were designed by HKS Hill Glazier (architecture), Jacques Grange (interior design) and Jean Mus (garden design and landscaping) to provide homes of two, four and six bedrooms, ranging in size from 500 m2 to 900 m2 in grounds of up to 2,600 m2. The villas are designed in three distinct styles with variations in the designs, giving buyers the opportunity to choose from a range of bespoke luxury options. These unique residences will marry elements of the classic Moroccan home with the latest state-of-the-art entertainment and security systems required for 21st century living. Features will include a media room, gymnasium, hammam, home office, swimming pool, staff accommodation, garage and automatic landscape irrigation for the gardens.
Mr Bernard Lambert, Chief Executive Officer of Monte-Carlo SBM comments: “The Jawhar Estate is Monte-Carlo SBM’s first resort outside the famous and prestigious Principality of Monaco. We have chosen to work with Aerium and its partners because of the vision, quality and exclusivity of the Jawhar Estate which we believe is unrivalled. Monte-Carlo SBM has a peerless reputation for creat-ing and running five-star hotels, spas and residences in the world famous and glamorous Monte-Carlo and the Jawhar Estate will become Morocco’s premier destination. The super-prime residences will join the ranks of London’s Knightsbridge, Manhattan’s Upper East Side and Hong Kong’s The Peak as one of the top-10 addresses in the world. Jawhar will be THE resort to visit, experience and tell your friends about.”
Some of the private residences have already been reserved. In reflection of the exclusive surrounding the project, interested purchasers will be asked to pre-register before being provided with details of the properties. Prices for the private residences are still to be made available but are anticipated to be in the range of 2 million EUR to 6 million EUR (1.8 M GBP to 5.4 M GBP / 2.9 M USD to 8.8 M USD).
