SIN K S Picking the right sink for your bathroom can be an overwhelming choice. The myriad options can leave your head spinning. Sleek undermounts, space saving pedestals, and colorful ceramics embedded in vanity tops parade across webpages luring you into each of their sink webs. Elegant ones beckon you, charming ones, well, charm you, and unique ones make you stop in your tracks and pay attention. By the end, you have made up your mind – then unmade up your mind -- over half a dozen times. How many different types of sinks can there be?

12

JOHN ERIC HOME

Actually, there are seven. The vessel, drop-in, undermount, vanity top, wall-mounted, pedestal and console. Each have a different look although all have the same function. Let’s take them one-by-one… Vessel Sink. The vessel type sink sits on top of the countertop, just like a bowl sits on a table. The bottom of the sink is often flush with the countertop, but it can sometimes be sunk an inch or two beneath the surface. These types of sinks are aesthetically pleasing. Their artistic features are second-to-none and are made from all different materials – from copper to glass to ceramic. Drop-In Sink. Also called a self-rimming sink, this type of sink has an outer rim that sits on top of the counter and holds the sink in place. The drop-in is one of the most common types of sinks that you will see. Why? Because it is super easy to change out without replacing the entire countertop. Although they are considered more “standard,” there are gorgeous drop-in sinks available. Undermount Sink. This type of sink is installed underneath the counter. A precise hole must be cut in the countertop to accommodate this type of sink. This means that they are harder to change out without replacing the countertop. But the undermount is incredibly popular due to its sleek appearance and modernity. Vanity Top Sink. A single piece countertop has the sink built-in. The vanity top is the other most common form of bathroom sinks. This is because full vanities allow for so much more counter space. If you choose the vanity top, go with one that is about an inch bigger than your vanity to create a slight overhang. Wall-Mounted Sink. This type of sink is exactly what its name implies – it is a sink that requires no vanity and can be installed directly on the wall. These types of sinks are great for bathrooms with minimal space. Like the drop-in, these sinks are simple but there are some with lovely designs that can be found. Pedestal Sink. The pedestal is a free-standing sink that is supported by a column. This is another great option for small bathrooms. The pedestal, like the vessel, is often chosen not just for utilitarian purposes but for its aesthetics as well. They can be modern, rustic, colorful, or simple – they run the gamut. Console Sink. This sink is wall mounted and sits on two or four legs. It is as simple as simple gets. The design element in console sinks is actually found in its legs. Gold, silver, brass – they tend to pop. So, now you have a primer on the different styles of bathroom sinks. The thing is, the sink that you choose is important. The bathroom sink is an integral part of the design that seamlessly ties your look together and helps you reach your design goals. Happy choosing!

PANTONE’S Created Vision by David Brown

For the first time in the 22-year history of Pantone’s Color of the Year, the Pantone Institute has created a brand new color for the franchise made just for 2022. PANTONE® 17-3938 Very Peri is a dynamic periwinkle blue with a vibrant, violet-red undertone designed to evoke the glowing touchscreens of the digital world and the creative possibilities of the future. The company created a color instead of delving into their pre-existing archive, a decision that was a vital element of this year’s selection process. Very Peri, a warm shade of periwinkle blue with a violet-red undertone is a manufactured brand-new color to suit a world in transition. According to the institute, creating a new color for 2022 was itself symbolic of the changes taking place in the world right now, following an intense period of isolation and uncertainty. Like last year’s selection of two colors, Ultimate Gray and the sunny yellow Illuminating, the choice of Very Peri was largely influenced by the desire to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, environmental concerns and a larger reckoning with injustice and flaws within our current social structures. Pantone Color Institute specialists said they also took into account the promise of eye-opening perspectives and possibilities, our increased reliance on digital technology and “this whole thing with the metaverse” in developing the new hue. That’s a great deal of responsibility to ask of any color, but in the name of creativity, newness and the future, they created one. The global authority describes the color as “courageous,” “empowering,” “spritely,” “joyous,” “dynamic novel presence,” “imaginative,” “whimsical aesthetic,” and “futuristic,” making it a shade that offers up hope as we enter another year of uncertainty. As with previous years, the Color of the Year is based on more than just design trends. “It expresses the mood of consumers and captures the collective mood of the world,” explained Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, over Zoom. “But it is also about psychology: the emotion that is tied into it. How do we capture what we are going through right now? It’s

A Garage Conversion By Sherry Moeller Photos by Stacy Zarin Goldberg

That Sparks Inspiration InSite Builders & Remodeling turn a detached garage into a light-filled art studio

Finding new uses for underutilized spaces in homes continues to be a trend in the renovation industry. What started with the pandemic is now the norm. From basements to attics to garages and more, many homeowners are choosing to stay where they are and renovating their homes to get the extra spaces they need, instead of moving. For one Bethesda, Maryland couple, it was the perfect time to do something about their detached two-car garage. Besides the fact that it was rarely used, the owners were never fond of the look of the structure, especially with its metal siding. Calling on longtime friend Stephen Gordon, president of InSite Builders & Remodeling, www.insiteremodeling.com, the homeowners and remodeler mapped out a plan to convert the garage into an art studio. For two decades, one of the owners had been painting in their dark basement. So, on the top of their list of must-haves was adding as many windows and doors as possible to let in an abundance of natural light. InSite started by removing the siding, then adding the requested large windows and sliding glass doors and installing a low-heat LED lighting system along the now vaulted and beamed ceiling. Homasote, a fiberboard, was added to two walls so the owner could tack his canvases directly to the walls for painting his largescale abstract artwork. The new contemporary building is not only spacious enough for the resident artist, but also has enough room to host art shows and small gatherings.

Executive Chef Frederik De Pue Offers a One-Of-A-Kind Dining Experience with Private Dining Rooms in a Welcoming Atmosphere Just Blocks from The White House by Sherry Moeller Photos by Greg Powers

Frederik De Pue, executive chef and owner of The Henri

Executive Chef Frederik De Pue opened his newest restaurant, The Henri, located at 1301 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC on February 15, 2022. Offering unique private dining rooms - a concept that was years in the making, The Henri also just launched a monthly membership program to enjoy fully-prepared signature dishes and exclusive off-menu items available for pickup or delivery. Situated between the National Theater and Warner Theater and just blocks from The White House, The Henri provides an innovative dining experience —a welcoming 8,000-square-foot, modern European bistro featuring both communal and private dining with versatile one-of-a-kind rooms, including access to the building’s rooftop space overlooking the Mall. The front of the restaurant offers a comfortable ambiance to dine via reservations and walk-ins with an open kitchen featuring a unique Bonnet rotisserie with daily specials, plus bar seating. The remainder of the restaurant is dedicated to six private dining rooms—which convert into eight separate spaces—only accessible via a hostess stand or private 24

entrance. These modular spaces include four private dining rooms—which are named and designed after the four seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, which can be combined into larger spaces to host business meetings, working lunches, cocktail parties, as well as any special event, including fundraisers and rehearsal dinners. The four rooms can be expanded into one space, called Seasons, with the smaller Dusk and Dawn creating additional intimate settings. The rooftop provides the eighth option for private dining. All private dining rooms surround a separate central kitchen and butcher block allowing for completely custom food and beverage menus. In addition, private dining rooms offer insulated acoustics, full A/V systems, and have access to a separate bar. The Henri was designed with everyone’s safety as a top priority and features the latest ventilation filtration systems and technology. De Pue’s concept for The Henri, which is named after his grandfather, is fueled by his passion for food and creating an open-door feeling for everyone. “I wanted to offer flexible,

With more than 30 years in the industry, De Pue’s culinary career started at the age of 15 in Belgium where he went on to attend one of the top culinary schools, leading to an internship at a three-star Michelin restaurant. He’s had the privilege to work as a chef at some of the top restaurants in Europe before moving to the United States where he worked as a chef on Embassy Row in DC. Since then, De Pue has owned and operated catering services in the region, such as 42° Catering Services and Catering by Frederik De Pue, as well as several restaurants including Flamant in Annapolis, MD. The Henri offers dinner daily from 4-11:00 p.m. with happy hour specials. Lunch service will begin in the spring with breakfast added soon. Laundry When

Isn’t a Chore but an Oasis

The laundry room is often the smallest room in the house. They are often overlooked in design and stand on the more practical side of things. A space to wash and dry clothing. Nothing fancy. No bells and whistles. The thing is – with a small renovation – the laundry room can become a lovely addition to your home. Even the most modest spaces can deliver great impact with well thought out design. The size and configuration of a laundry room certainly limits grand design but can serve a knock-out punch with a few modifications. And normally, the renovation can be accomplished on a small budget and a short time frame. Your walls and cabinets need some love To provide a lift to the small space, go bold with wall color. A beautiful forest green paint – set against a white washer and dryer – provides a fresh feel and great contrast. Freshly paint the cabinets and shelving white for an additional pop. If green isn’t your thing, try navy or deep purple. If you prefer more subtle colors, go for them instead. But remember that the pop is in the bold. Aside from painting, the walls of your new laundry room will also need attention. Don’t be nervous to put up a large print or a large clock for decor. Add cabinets and shelving. If you do add shelving, play around with the brackets. Add gold or silver or bronze brackets to provide subtle accents. Just make sure not to ignore your walls, they can seamlessly tie everything together. Speaking of cabinets, don’t be afraid to move the original cabinets around the room. Balance functionality with style and add or remove cabinets according to need. Add shelving in between cabinets to create a custom builtin look and don’t be afraid to add a countertop on top of the machines (if the appliances aren’t top load of course) for extra space. This space is perfect for folding laundry, which is critical to the room’s functionality.

29

Floors aren’t there just to walk on Floors can become a focal point of the makeover and there are many options to choose from. A custom penny tile, a sleek modern tile, or a big-block white tile are all good in both practical terms and style. Possibly here you want to add the bold color instead of the walls to create an interesting space. There is nothing to stop you – the possibilities are endless… Now that you have a floor, it’s time to throw down a rug on top of it. A plush rug or a jute rug or a colorful rug – decorative touches that are both design conscious and practical are important in creating your new space. And while you are rug shopping, also check out fun and practical baskets. Baskets are easy to store necessities and can be moved around the shelving spaces with ease. They can also hold a potted plant – yes, adding a plant or two in the space is also a good idea. If you don’t have one already, it’s time for a sink One thing that a newly renovated, modern laundry room must have is a utility sink. If your laundry room doesn’t already contain one, this is where the renovation may incur a cost. Until now, we have focused on inexpensive cosmetic touches to transform the space. Adding a sink isn’t cosmetic but utilitarian and necessary. The first thing to do is to call a tradesman and find out the costs associated with plumbing the room for a sink. Once you have that information, you can determine whether to proceed or not. If you can, it’s a good idea to do so. It will make life a lot easier in your laundry room. One of the tiniest rooms in the house is often overlooked when it comes to design. But it shouldn’t be. You spend a lot of time in it. Stamp your style on it with a quick renovation.

HOMEWORK SPACE Now, in the age of virtual learning, home students tend to leave papers, binders and textbooks scattered around the house. Your bonus room is the solution to reign in the madness. Quiet and free of distractions (like TV and video games), set the room up with a table and a few comfortable chairs – throw in a bookshelf of school supplies – and it will become the perfect place for the kids to get to work. YOGA STUDIO Your bonus room could become a complete oasis for centering yourself and working on your Eagle pose. Grab a few aromatherapy candles, your yoga mat, and hook up a blue-tooth speaker to play your favorite list of meditation music. The bonus space is now your own studio. MUSIC ROOM Instruments can take up a lot of space. Whether it is a piano, a set of drums, even a violin and stand can take up precious room in main living areas. Plus – no matter how melodic the sound, sometimes it can be distracting if a budding (or even professional) musician practices or plays, the perfect reason to create a music room using your bonus room. TEEN HANGOUT Teens like their own space. It is part of being a teen. A bonus room can give them their own private space that they call their own. Think about what your teens like – whether it’s a tv and gaming system, a book nook, or just a place to hang out with friends – and set them up! LIBRARY Buy some DIY shelfing, add seating and lamps, and create your own personal library. It will be a wonderful place to escape to – cup of tea or coffee in hand – to not just enjoy a good book but have a few minutes of peace.

Some of the best aspects of being an interior designer today are: • Working on such a wide variety of home styles. Thank goodness not everyone likes the same type of home. As a result, the design variety is amazing! • The vast array of beautiful selections that are at our fingertips. There are so many gorgeous textiles, furniture options, tiles, paints, and more. It is a world worth getting lost in.

You often work with architects and builders at the onset of a new custom home. Tell us how that’s beneficial for everyone, especially the homeowners. When you can start the project at conception, it allows the team to create the best house from the very beginning. Reason being, you hear all ideas from everyone involved at the onset where even the smallest germination of an idea can lead to an impactful design element. When everyone is on the same page, it creates a synergy for the homeowners. It allows the architect, builder, interior designer, and

landscape architect to streamline the process, determine assignments, and focus on the work from the start. What are the top trends you’re seeing in interior design, both in business practices and home interiors? We are seeing homeowners wanting to create more closed off spaces. For many years, we have worked hard to keep floor plans open. Now people are realizing that there is a need to have offices, homework rooms, screened porches, dens, and lounges that are separate from the rest of the house. What renovations are at the top of most homeowners’ wish list now? Right now, the outdoor space is king! We have been creating beautiful outdoor rooms for the entire family to enjoy. This trend will be here to stay, at least for the next few years. Are virtual meetings here to stay? Virtual meetings are here to stay, more so for long-distance correspondence. We have been getting together in person more and more for local meetings; however, our out-of-state projects have been made easier by meeting virtually. We might just hold onto our virtual meetings a bit longer to make our lives less complicated with travel. What is your best advice for someone who wants to pursue a career in interior design? Take the time to intern for someone you admire. Try your hand at the day-to-day and understand all aspects of the job. The more you learn with on-the-job training, the better prepared you will be to find that perfect position in the interior design industry.

Bathroom MAKEOVERS

One of our very own team members, Colette Bryan, recently undertook bathroom renovations in her home. She shares with us her thoughts and experiences on what the process is in real terms… We purchased our home exactly five years ago after selling our previous home with John Eric. My husband and I knew from the moment that we saw this house that it was perfect for our large (and loud) family. We also knew that it was going to need a lot of TLC and updates. After our deal closed, we immediately set to fixing the external and most “important” features of the house, which included a new roof, new garage doors, fixing the windows, and adding new insulation in the attic. This also included painting the home’s trim and almost every room in the house! Over the past five years, older appliances have been swapped out for newer and more efficient ones. Fixtures have been updated. A variety of “smaller” remodeling jobs (removing a wall or changing out flooring) continued. However, we had a looming (and leaking) remodeling project staring us in the face that we couldn’t avoid any longer. Our primary bathroom was an outdated, dark, leaky, poorly lit, horribly laid out ticking time bomb waiting to go off. When we first moved into our house, the shower in our primary bath had multiple leaks. The old faucets and plumbing required visits by three different plumbers before finally a fourth sourced the issue, and we were able to purchase the correct valve that would stop the leak (the first three threw up their hands at the old/fancy/European faucets and controls). We were not able to use our shower for the first month or so we lived here, which became the catalyst to remodel our bathroom. Also, our bedroom was poorly lit and had a very outdated and off-center fireplace. My husband and I wanted to address those issues at the same time we renovated the bathroom.

A PAINT COLOR

by Any Other Name

48

JOHN ERIC HOME

It can be agonizing, picking the right paint colors for the rooms of your home. However, what is often overlooked in the process, and what is critical to understand in choosing your paint, is the very essence of color. What it is and how it is created. It directly impacts how the paint will – quite literally – be seen. Understanding color will make it a whole lot easier when the time comes to purchase your paint, regardless of the color you choose. Understanding the hues. Understanding colors does not require you to be an expert in color theory. But understanding the nature of color and the following terms will make life a whole lot easier as you pick your paints. We probably all remember this from first grade art class, but it does bear repeating. Colors are broken down into two main categories – primary and secondary. The primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. Secondary colors are those obtained from mixing primary colors together. Green, orange and purple. From these sets all other colors emerge. As do their hues. And what is a hue? Simply put, it is the variety of a specific color. Aqua is a hue of blue. Forest is a hue of green. It is what is used to describe a color. As are the terms tone and tint. The difference? A tone is created by adding gray pigment to a primary or secondary color. It’s what is described as a soft or bright tone. Soft tones have more gray mixed in while bright tones are closer to the pure color. Tints are similar to tones, but with tints, white pigment is added to the primary or secondary color. Paint colors are described as having a lighter or darker tint. Lighter tints have more white than darker tints. And we can’t forget the shades, paint shades that is. A shade is a hue that is produced by adding black pigment to a primary or secondary pigment. Normally speaking, shade and tint are used interchangeably to describe how light or dark a color appears.

There are two colors that have yet to be mentioned. They are, of course, white and black. Pure white is the absence of all color. You can’t ever mix a color – or for that matter add a color – to create it. While black is the formulation of all the primary colors mixed together. Like white, it is pure. True black is true black. (Of course, paint colors can be tinted to produce various hues of both black and white.) So that’s a quick primer (pardon the pun) on colors and how they are created. Then, the hues and tints and tones and shades are all categorized and distilled into three separate categories. What group are you in? All formed colors are grouped into three separate categories – warm, cool, and neutral. You can pretty much guess where a color stands given its hue. Normally, the paints in each category are used in conjunction with each other. Warms pair well with other warms. Cools the same. Neutrals, however, can be added to either in a color scheme. Warm colors evoke, well, warmth and heat. Think of oranges and reds, yellows and pinks. They are also called active colors as they stimulate and excite the mind. Vibrant and eyecatching, they are bright toned and often used in kitchens, offices and for accent walls. They can be used in any room to promote stimulation. Cool colors on the other hand have a colder feel to them. Blue and purple and green. Often, cool colors are used to invoke a sense of nature and are used to produce a feeling of calmness. These colors are also known as passive colors because they are known to promote relaxation. Generally, passive colors are cool and soft toned. They are always good choices for bedrooms. They can also make small spaces seem more spacious. The third group is quite possibly one of the most used in interior paint. That is the neutral

49

color group. These are color hues that do not comfortably fit within one of the primary or secondary color families. Neutral colors include black, white, brown, gray and cream. They are used for different reasons in a home. Quite often, rooms are painted white to invoke the feeling of a larger space. Brown is used in similar fashion to cool colors – to create a feeling of relaxation – but the difference is the brown palette is earthy and invokes a sense of warmth. Unlike the cool colors in its paint family, gray is a great color to use to keep things crisp and clean. While cream is the neutral color that cooperates well with

50

JOHN ERIC HOME

all furniture, accessories and art. However, all the neutral colors compliment different color schemes and items within a room. That is why they are so often used in interior design. And that’s a quick summary of how color is created and categorized. Now, imagine your rooms in different colors of the rainbow (or perhaps a neutral) and head to the hardware store to give them a lift!

Transition Spaces IN HOME

By now, we have all become fully aware of how the pandemic has completely changed our lifestyles, with many of these changes becoming permanent. We have also heard how it has changed our way of living – specifically in our homes. But the American home had already been in flux and was shifting throughout the course of previous decades. The pandemic just brought the changes to the forefront of how we actually live in our homes. Here are but a few of the changes – many that began their state of motion a while back – of the American home. THIS AIN’T YOUR MOTHER’S MUDROOM. Until recently, the mudroom was a small and simple space at an entryway to the home. Here could be found piles or shoes and coats and scarves, and it served a very utilitarian purpose. Now? It has transformed into more of a multi-functional space. A shower (to wash of that mud!) and even laundry areas are moving into mudrooms, which is proving handy in cleaning off the kids – and their dirt-stained clothing. Mudrooms are now also serving as a small mail center, being retrofitted with dedicated surfaces and storage for package deliveries, which keeps shipped goods from cluttering entry halls and kitchens. Adding a garbage can keeps the unwanted junk mail from moving around the inside of the house. SHUT THE DOOR! For years, the walls were already closing in on the open floor plan. (Many designers have gone on record saying that they expect the plan to be entirely phased out in the not-too-distant future.) However, the open floor had taken over the architectural scene decades ago and is standard in many modern homes. Now, small additions are closing in these spaces – namely in the form of doors.

There is something both romantic and mysterious about archaeological digs. The romantic notion that you may unearth a priceless artifact. That you are an active participant in history, digging up something that has never before been seen or held. Then there is the mystery. What will you find under the soil, and what will be its significance? We have heard about discoveries from them, seen Hollywood film versions of them, and so many of us have been intrigued by them – these romantic and mysterious digs – but where are they and how does one become involved? Although excavations are physically challenging and involve walking, squatting, and sometimes tolerating rugged accommodations without electricity, they attract passionate people of all ages. Digs generally take place in the summer and have a spring application deadline. They happen in almost every country accessible to researchers. Here are a few excavation opportunities that are actively seeking adult volunteers for 2022. BIBLICAL ARCHAEOLOGY IN JORDAN The site: Khirbat a-Balu’a Located in north-central Jordan, Khirbat a-Balu’a extends more than 12 miles and served for millennia as a waystation on the path to the Karak Plateau. The site has been occupied from the Early Iron Age (about 3,000 years ago) through today. The finds: Crews have excavated fortification structures and rare iron objects. Details: The 2022 project runs from June 23 to August 4, with two half-sessions available. There is a minimum stay of three weeks. The price to participate in this archaeological dig range from $1500 to $2500, depending on the length of stay and registration fees. ARCHEOLOGICAL DIG AT AN EARLY SETTLEMENT IN CENTRAL PORTUGAL The site: In the Tagus Valley The esteemed nonprofit Earthwatch Institute sponsors field school for adults interested in understanding the unsolved mysteries of prehistoric Portugal. The transition from pre-agricultural society to herding and farming is the primary focus of the Tagus Valley research. Participants in the 2022 fieldwork will excavate human remains, tools and other indicators of the transition from hunting and gathering to longer-term settlement. The finds: The main questions the head archaeologists are asking include how, when and why Mesolithic and Neolithic peoples occupied the area, which happens to be one of the hottest debates in contemporary European archaeology. Field school participants will excavate shell mounds, analyze artifacts and conduct lab work. Details: Eight field sessions run for either one week or two between August 1, 2022, to late September 2022. Participants will stay in the nearby Palace of Muge Estate and couples’ rooms are available. Farm-fresh meals come from local restaurants that can accommodate special diets. Evening lectures are included, and 14-day sessions usually allocate a day or two for recreation. A one-week session is $2,850, and a two-week session costs $3995. Bulb THOMAS EDISON WOULD BE AMAZED LIGHT BULBS HAVE GROWN EXTREMELY SMART IN RECENT YEARS…

70

JOHN ERIC HOME

Smart bulbs are quickly becoming a key element in modern smart homes. One of the easiest and most affordable ways to upgrade your living room is to swap out your standard incandescents for smart light bulbs. After upgrading, you’ll never have to get up off the couch to flip the light switch again. You can now replace your traditional bulbs with a variety of connected solutions that can be controlled with just a few taps on your smartphone or tablet. Some also connect with smartwatches and virtual assistants, so they can be controlled from your wrist or with just the sound of your voice. Smart bulbs use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and a variety of technologies to work, so they are typically more expensive than traditional bulbs. The flip side is that smart bulbs also use less energy and last longer, so they can save you money in the long run. The market right now has several manufacturers of smart bulbs -- Yeelight, Ring, Philips – but Wyze bulbs are those that tech wizards rate time and again for best quality

bs and price.

The Wyze Bulb Color features Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for hub-free app control, and

Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant allow you to turn it on and off with your voice. It’s a lot smarter than your average light bulb, but affordable enough to put in every fixture in the house. It can produce virtually any color, plus a range of warm to cool white tones, and shine bright or dim low, offering plenty of options to set the mood for your next movie night.

It offers ample smart features for the price, including support for custom scenes,

device-triggered automations, scheduling, and sleep routines that help you gradually wind down at night and wake up in the morning. It’s rated to last up to 25,000 hours – you simply won’t find a better smart light bulb for a lower price. And the Bulb Color has an embedded 2.4GHz Wi-Fi radio, so it doesn’t require a hub. It also features Bluetooth, so you can still control it with your phone in the event of an internet outage.

71

The app offers a few preset color temperature scenes that let you tune your lights with a single tap, including Night Light, Cozy, Bright and Energized. It also offers some fun preset color scenes, including Energy, Gaming, Movie and Meditation. If you have multiple bulbs grouped together, tapping one of the preset color scenes will make them each shine a different but complementary color. If you want to take a more customized approach, you can manually select a white temperature or color, adjust the bulb’s brightness (1 to 100%), and save that as a custom scene. If you have several bulbs grouped together, you can have them all shine the same color/temperature and brightness or make each one different. Playing around with the different color, temperature, and brightness settings, and saving your favorite combinations as custom scenes is a lot of fun. Wyze also offers a few automated lighting options, including wake-up and bedtime sleep routines that gradually illuminate or dim to help you rise in the morning or wind down before bed. When setting up a sleep routine, you can select the start time, duration and which days of the week you want it to run. For wake-up routines, you can also select the ending brightness and color temperature. You can, for instance, set your lights to start fading in at 6 a.m. on weekdays, gradually illuminating to a cool white color temperature at 100% brightness over 30 minutes. Complicated setup? Nope. The Wyze Bulb Color is simple to set up and use. First, download the Wyze app and create an account if you don’t already have one. Next, tap the plus sign in the top left corner of the app, select Add Device > Power & Lighting > Wyze Bulb Color, and follow the on-screen instructions. When the app asks for permission to use Bluetooth, select OK. After screwing in your new bulb, it should automatically begin pulsing, indicating it’s in pairing mode. If it’s not, Wyze says to turn it off and on three times to manually enable pairing mode. Once the app finds your bulb, you can give it a name based on where it’s plugged in (e.g. “desk lamp” or “nightstand”), and you’re all set. Wyze makes it easy to set up multiple bulbs at the same time and lets you name them individually. Just plug them all in and follow the steps outlined above. When the app detects multiple bulbs, it will make them each light up in a different color. In the app, it then asks you to name them individually. To group them, press the plus sign in the app again, but this time select Add Device Group > Color Bulb Group. Give the group a name, select the bulbs you want to include, and you should be good to go.

KITCHEN Don’t Let the

Become a Nightmare Renovation

Outdated cabinets. Dingy flooring. No storage. Old appliances. If these words describe your kitchen, then a remodel is probably on your wish list. But what exactly is involved in a kitchen remodel? The key is to understand the process before you get started, because your success is contingent upon taking the right steps in the right order. Step 1: Plan Of course, you are raring to go but don’t remove that grimy old sink or order a new smart refrigerator until you’ve mapped out a detailed kitchen remodel plan. It will emphasize the basics such as your budget, your look, and if you can tackle the project on your own or if you should consult with some remodeling professionals. The extent of the work can range from a basic refresh – adding in those new appliances and fresh coats of paint – to a total gutting of the kitchen – which means tearing down walls and reconfiguring your layout. Most kitchen renovations lie somewhere in the middle. It all depends on what you want for you space. Now that you have your plan, your top priority must be safety. Before you begin planning or ripping out that wall, it’s critical that you commit to prioritizing the safety of anyone and everyone involved in the renovation process. This includes things like turning off the water and power before you start the demo, wearing protective gear (like gloves, heavy-duty shoes and eye protection) and using the proper tools. Following code requirements, which vary based on municipality, and consulting professionals for tasks that are above and beyond your skill set will also help ensure your safety. Step 2: Demo Now that you have a plan, it’s time for the demo. You will find immense glee in ripping up your dated vinyl flooring or removing that awful sink. Taking down the ugly hood or pitching the cabinets that have seen their day. Get a large dumpster for all the debris so you can just toss it as soon as you remove it. After you have completed the demo, we are onto the next step, making sure the essentials are all in order. Step 3: Plumbing and Electrical Next up is plumbing and electrical. It is best to take care of the utilities when cabinets are out and the walls are exposed. Getting to the wires and pipes becomes much simpler. You don’t want to have to drill or cut holes into those brand-new

just been put up. A word of advice – be cautious. Anything that involves a skilled trade – make sure you are dealing with experts. Ordinary household electrical voltage is dangerous to mess around with, and a mistake in plumbing can lead to loads of headaches down the road. Step 4: Hang Your Drywall Now that the utilities have been sorted, it’s time to begin the drywall process. Before you get started make sure your measurements are 100% precise. The drywall must cover each wall and the ceiling. Once you have your measurements, get to work. And, once completed, make sure to immediately clean-up. Drywall dust is like mold – it has the tendency to get everywhere quickly. A shop vacuum is best for a hearty cleanup so it is not tracked throughout the rest of the house. Step 5: Paint Painting is the fun stage – you can see the design vision begin to take shape. Choose your paint and let loose on your walls.

Step 7: Countertops

Step 9: Sink and Appliances Finally, it’s time to install your new sink and set up the dishwasher, refrigerator, range and any other appliances you want to feature in your kitchen. Before you do though, call back the plumber and electrician to make sure all systems are a go. A plumber will know how to connect your sink to the previously installed plumbing fixtures, and an electrician can verify that your new gas stove is installed correctly. Once these installations are done, your remodel is complete!

QUICK QUESADILLAS (10 MINUTES) INGREDIENTS Per quesadilla 1 whole-grain flour tortilla (about 8″ diameter) ½ cup freshly grated cheddar cheese ¼ cup cooked black beans or pinto beans, rinsed and drained 1 tablespoon chopped red bell pepper or jarred roasted bell pepper or a few thinly sliced cherry tomatoes 1 tablespoon chopped red onion or green onion 1 tablespoon chopped pickled jalapeño (if you like heat) 1 teaspoon avocado oil, melted butter or extra-virgin olive oil, for brushing Any of the following, for serving: Salsa, pico de gallo, guacamole or strips of avocado, sour cream, hot sauce, chopped fresh cilantro… DIRECTIONS Heat a skillet over medium heat. Warm tortilla for about 30 seconds, flipping halfway. Flip once more, then sprinkle one-half of the tortilla with about half of the cheese. Cover the cheese evenly with the remaining fillings: beans, bell pepper, onion and jalapeño (if using). Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the fillings and fold over the empty side of the tortilla to enclose the fillings. Quickly brush the top of the quesadilla with a light coating of oil, then carefully flip it with a spatula. Let quesadilla cook until golden and crispy on the bottom, about 1 to 2 minutes, reducing the heat if necessary to prevent burning the tortilla. Brush the top with a light coating of oil, then flip it and cook until the second side is golden and crispy. Immediately remove the skillet from the heat and transfer the quesadilla to a cutting board. Let it cool for a minute to give the cheese time to set, then use a chef’s knife to slice it into 3 pieces. Serve promptly, with any sauces or garnishes that you’d like.

SMART REFRIGERATORS

The Rabbit Hole of

If you love cooking and technology, smart appliances and kitchen devices are the ideal gadgets for your home. Perhaps the appliance with the most buzz in the smart home space is the smart refrigerator. They have been on the market for years and have developed a faithful following. Companies like LG and Samsung are the “old reliables” – if one can call smart home technology old that is – and continually improve their connected refrigerators offering the most updated features. Some let you check their status through your phone so you can make sure things are working properly and that you have enough ice. Others have their own touch screen and can function as a communication center for your home. While others even have cameras inside, so you can see what you’re low on while you’re out shopping. Smart refrigerators aren’t cheap, and you can expect to spend several thousand dollars on one. But these refrigerators tend to be equivalent to the highest-end nonsmart appliances from manufacturers in terms of design, build quality and features. The question is – which smart refrigerator is best for you?

NOT TOO COMPLICATED. Want a smart refrigerator but don’t have super advanced smartphone skills? Then the Bosch 800 Series French Door model is for you. It features an internal icemaker – no drips and puddles on the floor – and an alarm that sounds off when the door is left open. It’s also counter-depth, so takes up less floor space in your kitchen. Simple and easy to use, yet efficient. MY KITCHEN IS TOO SMALL FOR A SMART REFRIGERATOR. A small kitchen shouldn’t keep you from enjoying the convenience of a smart fridge. The skinny model from the Bosch 800 series is the perfect size for a city apartment or suburban condo. It offers HomeConnect wired technology, a door alarm and quick-cooling features for the freezer and fridge. Note that this model is customizable, meaning panels and door handles are sold separately. And now you know. Is it time to make your kitchen just a little smarter?

BELLS AND WHISTLES WHILE NOT BREAKING THE BANK. At a mid-range price, the LG French Door Smart Refrigerator with its InstaView Door-in-Door is a safe bet. Tap the door twice to have a look at what’s inside without opening it. Use the Door-In-Door feature to grab frequently used items — cold drinks — while keeping cold air in. This refrigerator also features a companion app to remotely survey your refrigerator’s contents. At the grocery store and can’t remember if you have eggs? No problem. Hit the app and the answer becomes evident. RELIABLE FOR A TIGHT BUDGET. The LG French Door Refrigerator in the stainless-steel model won’t completely destroy your appliance budget. While this fridge isn’t crazy fancy, it does come with many of the tech features found in higher end units. French doors and adjustable shelves mean you control its configuration as needed and easily see all the fridge contents. The energyefficient model has a temperature sensor that adjusts interior temperatures as needed. Although not as “smart” as some of its pricier sibling models, it is solid. A SMART REFRIGERATOR FOR A SMART FAMILY. Samsung pretty much wrote the book on smart fridges. Their Family Hub Four-Door, French Door model is the gold standard for busy households. This refrigerator makes it easier to connect to your family and home, whenever and wherever you want. The Family Hub feature lets you manage your family’s calendars, play music on Spotify, share pictures and stay connected right through your refrigerator. With the family board (a digital bulletin board), you can customize pictures, add stickers and leave handwritten notes. And those are the perks before adding in the utility of the actual fridge, which needless to say, is impressive. The FlexZone feature lets you switch different quadrants of the fridge from cooling to freezing functions. It also features spill proof shelves and app capabilities. 91

FREQUENT FLYER (PALOMA) Glassware: Highball Class Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Avion Silver 1 oz. Giffard Pamplemousse Liqueur (or other grapefruit liqueur) .5 oz. guava juice 2 dashes Scrappy Lime Bitters 2-3 oz. seltzer water Garnish: 1/2 salt rim and grapefruit wedge Garnish a high ball glass with salt rim and add ice. Build drink over ice and then roll by pouring the drink back and forth from the glass to a shaker tin about six times. Add grapefruit wedge, serve and enjoy! Nothing helps wellness like a good rest. Rest and recovery are keys to The Paloma is the #1 ordered cocktail in all of Mexico and is one the most recognizable tequila drinks that has ever existed. This modern take of the classic is not a replacement but a nod to the original amazing drink. We start with blanco tequila, just like the original. Bright, floral, and slightly spicy, it is backed by a familiar earthiness yet is always crisp and clean. The traditional grapefruit soda or juice is replaced by Pamplemousse (a French grapefruit) liqueur. Slightly sweet and full of bright citrus, this liqueur makes for an exceptionally delightful backing to the tequila. The traditional citrus tones are further heightened by lime bitters. Everything is wrapped together with the fruity and crisp guava juice, while sparkling water lightens the flavors just enough to add refreshing vibrance. The Frequent Flyer is ready to go. Taking inspiration from the original both in flavor and in name (Paloma translates to Dove – a migratory bird) the Frequent Flyer is ready to be enjoyed frequently.

SUNSET TO SUNRISE (TEQUILA SUNRISE) Glassware: Rocks Glass Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Vida de le Muertos Del Maguey Mezcal .75 oz. Barrows ginger liqueur .25 oz. tart cherry juice 1 oz. Simply Light Orange Juice 1 oz. Simply Light Lemonade Garnish: Cherry Directions: Combine ingredients over ice, shake, and strain over fresh ice into a rock glass. Garnish, serve and enjoy. Made forever famous on the infamous Rolling Stones tour of 1972, the Tequila Sunrise is a drink that catapulted to the foreground of cocktails. A mix of tequila, orange juice and sweet grenadine, the drink is easy to make and easy to drink. Although tough to upgrade (as classics are classics for a reason), for a modern touch we can take out some of its calories and add a bit of flavorful flair that was not available in the 70’s. First, the tequila is replaced by mezcal. Earthy, lightly smokey, but full of mineral and citrus flavor, the mezcal brings a very large depth of taste to create a base foundation. To pair alongside the natural flavors of the mezcal, we have ginger liquor. The Barrow’s is a particularly strong one, noted for the ginger flavor up front, and lack of sugary claw. Traditional OJ is added, but this time it’s a calorie friendly Simply Light. Simply Light lemonade is then added for body, and the traditional super sweet and sugary grenadine is replaced by natural tart cherry juice (a powerful antioxidant). Just as a good song is never out of style, the Sunset to Sunrise, is one that can be enjoyed over and over again.

(MARGARITA)

Glassware: Chilled cocktail glass Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Olmeca Altos Reposado 1 oz. Italicus .75 oz. lime juice .25 oz. palm sugar syrup 2 dashes lavender bitters Garnish: Orange Twist Directions: Combine ingredients over ice in a shaker tin. Shake, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, garnish, serve, and enjoy. No tequila section of a cocktail mixlist could ever be complete without the G.O.A.T. – that is the Margarita. With an often-debated history (as many people want to claim its invention), the fact is that the Margarita is the number one ordered cocktail in America. In its purest form, the classic margarita is simple, elegant, and enlivening. A renovation of this classic is no simple task. It must be done with intention and respect. Reposado tequila starts the foundation. The light vanilla, baking spices and oak flavors create a great accompaniment to the flavors that will be added. Traditional orange liqueur is replaced by Italicus, which imbues the drink with the flavor of bergamot. Lime juice adds a citrus backbone and cuts sweetness from the drink, while the coconut palm sugar syrup brings an earthy and comforting taste. To pack just that little bit extra of a punch, lavender bitters are added. The floral quality of the bitters heightens the bright citrus of the drink. While paying respect and homage to the original, the Daisy all Day is a tipple that, like the original, can be ordered over and over again.

HEALTH & WELLNESS YOUR BEST SELF

MOTIVATION & WILLPOWER

by Hannah Jenner 98

JOHN ERIC HOME

We all have our own stories of motivation and willpower. For many people, willpower is seen as something you either have or don’t have. Perhaps you know someone who always seems to be endlessly motivated and able to stick to the healthy lifestyle that manages to evade you. Maybe you never quite feel motivated by any of the diets or exercise programs you try. In this article we are going to consider first what motivation and willpower actually mean and then take a look at how to reframe your thoughts and redirect your actions so that you can become one of these highly motivated people with endless amounts willpower! Motivation: The state or condition of having a strong reason to act or accomplish something. Willpower: Getting yourself to do something that you don’t really want to do (i.e., the control of one’s impulses and actions.) Let’s start with willpower. You can view willpower in two ways: 1 As a limited resource - you are born with a finite reserve of willpower that once used up is gone forever. 2 As cumulative - imagine willpower is a muscle, the more you use it the better you get at it. If you think of willpower as a limited resource, then every time you are forced to use it you may feel depleted. Say no to that donut and a small part of you just disappeared and won’t come back. This makes it very easy to create a safety behavior around giving in to temptation. If you say yes to the donut, then you don’t have to let go of something you won’t get back. Conversely if you think of willpower as cumulative then when you say no to the donut (as hard as that may be) you feel inspired and empowered to do it again. Suddenly, it’s not just the donut that you are saying no to but the sugar in your coffee, the fries on the side, and so on. Next time you are in a situation where there is temptation, try to notice what thoughts come up around willpower. Try flexing it like a muscle. Arnold was not born ready to win Mr. Olympia, after all he had to work those muscles hard to get there! There are two types of motivation: 1 Intrinsic motivation - incentive derived from pleasure in the activity itself. 2 Extrinsic motivation - external incentive to achieve – for example reward, leaderboard or payment. Finding a balance between the two is the key to ‘feeling’ motivated. In order to really find joy in an activity that leads

to intrinsic motivation, you need to take a deep dive into your values, identity and priorities. If, as mentioned in the first paragraph, you can’t seem to stick to any of the diet or exercise programs you have tried, it could simply be that none of them line up with who you really are, who you want to be, and what you believe in. Perhaps you don’t want to get shredded in 6 weeks, but what you really want is to feel healthy and vibrant. In this case it doesn’t matter what the reward is, a severe 6 week cut diet will most definitely leave you feeling unmotivated as it simply doesn’t resonate with you. Once you figure out who you are and what you value, you can start to choose to do things that will leave you feeling motivated from within. If you happen to couple that with something that gives you a reward – such as recognition for long term improvement or changes in mindset – even better. We all have willpower. We can all feel motivated as long as we are putting our energy towards things that spark some kind of joy inside us. If you come across a situation where you don’t have complete control, such as a tedious task at work, try to think about the reward you get from doing it – a paycheck, benefits or the opportunity to learn. It may seem like a reach, but finding some positive element makes an unwanted task a whole lot easier than building a brick wall of negativity that is exhausting to climb. So, flex your willpower muscles, take a deep dive into your identity, values and priorities, and build up that intrinsic motivation. Before you know it, you will become that person living their best life.

SPRING

Now that we are into springtime, it’s a good time to do some planning with your finances. If you are like a lot of people, you will have done your 2021 taxes already and are saying to yourself (and others) that you wish you had planned better to save on taxes because you feel you paid too much. The best strategy is to spend time with your tax and financial advisors and see what could’ve been done to pay less, and what can be done this year to make sure that you are not in the same position again next spring. One of the things that is associated with the spring, of course, is spring cleaning. It’s a good time to go through your home and look at the clutter and decide what to do with it. You have several options. Throw things away that have no resale or donation value. Donate items that you no longer want or need to charity and receive a tax deduction for your 2022 taxes. You may also want to look at consignment shops for your more valuable items if you do not have the time or desire to sell them yourself or do not wish to donate them. There are also eBay and other sites where you can list items for sale and make some extra money. Just be sure that you include the shipping costs before you finalize any sale. Shipping cost are and will continue to increase and you don’t want to shortchange yourself with that expense. Donating or selling items is a good way to keep your house free of clutter and a good way to make some extra cash. It’s also a way to save on taxes at the same time. Another thing to do during springtime is to meet with your advisors and review your tax returns. Is anything else that either you can or should do to increase the value of your investments to reduce the amount of taxes that you are paying? Options to explore include increasing your contributions to a retirement plan such as a 401K; purchasing investment property; making charitable gifts and donations; starting a business; setting up 529 plans for college; looking into Opportunity Zone investments to delay gains of your investments; and looking at possible tax credits for solar panels and electric vehicles (these come and go, so you need to see what is currently available.)

Other spring activities would include discarding unneeded or obsolete documents, including PII (Personally Identifiable Information.) Shredding works best for these types of documents. You need to check with your tax and investment professionals to make sure that you can take advantage of some of these options. I recommend that you not do anything without first having a conversation with your advisors. If you do not have an advisor, please feel free to email me and I can recommend a tax advisor and help you personally on the financial advisory side, my email is marcs@equityplanning.com . I hope these suggestions help you with your financial goals. By staying current, you will make your finances easier to monitor and understand and hopefully make you more efficient and your finances more effective. Until next time, I hope you enjoy the spring.

STYLIST FASHION FORWARD

So, you are undertaking a renovation. Just because you will be ripping out appliances or laying down new floor doesn’t mean that you can’t do it in style! Combine the practical with the fashionable and put these wardrobe items on your list right from the jump…

COMFORTABLE LONG PANTS Regardless of the season, if you are going to get down & dirty with a home renovation, long pants are necessary to cover up your legs for protection. Lululemon has some great options for both men and women.

COMFORTABLE LONG SLEEVES Like long pants, long sleeves are also a good idea to wear when working on the project. Just make sure to wear a t-shirt that is a little loose (to allow you to comfortably move) but not too much that the shirt will get in your way. ONNO makes great long sleeve t-shirts for both men and women. A bonus is that they are made from bamboo and sustainable.

A FASHIONABLE DUST MASK A dust mask is important to wear for obvious reasons. A great and stylish mask – that not only keeps out the dust but is effective against other allergens, smog and pollutants – is the Air/Num Urban Face Mask! PROTECTIVE EYE GOGGLES & EARMUFFS To protect your eyes, try NoCry’s Safety Glasses. With a lightweight construction and wraparound design, they offer ample protection while keeping you comfortable. For your ears? Exposure to any noise above 85 decibels has the ability to be hazardous to your ears, a level that is probably quieter than you might think. In the case of earmuffs, focus on safety not style, and go with the 3M PELTOR Optime. GLOVES Gloves are tricky. You need a pair that won’t tear, rip or become ruined in the first few hours. You also need to make sure that they are super protective. Up to 60% of hand injuries could be eliminated with proper hand protection. This is where CLC Custom Leathercraft 125S comes onto the scene. They are protective, comfortable and flexible. 103

USTA

The U.S. Tennis Association’s MidAtlantic division announced Thursday plans to build a 36-court facility in Loudoun County, which would host tournaments and other big events and serve as the organization’s headquarters. The facility, proposed to open in 2025, would become the largest of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic division. USTA Mid-Atlantic Section, as the division is formally called, currently has the 20-acre property under contract, Lauren Hoffmann, the organization’s spokesperson, told the Washington Business Journal. The organization has not named the location, except to say it’s along the Dulles Greenway near Leesburg. However, an updated statement of justification for the proposed Village at Clear Springs, a massive, 1,200plus home planned community from developer Hobie Mitchell currently under review by Loudoun planners, appears to include the USTA center. BRIDGE IMPROVEMENTS

600 CBR, LLC

One buyer has spent more money than Jeff Bezos and Dan Snyder combined on residential real estate in the DC region over the last two years, but their identity is a bit of a mystery. Using the moniker 600 CBR LLC, the buyer has purchased some of the most expensive real estate in the area along McLean’s Gold Coast, starting about two years ago. In January 2020, the buyer made a splashy entrance to the DC housing market by purchasing 600 Chain Bridge Road, owned by late AOL co-founder James V. Kimsey. Listed with TTR Sotheby’s International Realty for the tidy price of $62.95 million in 2018, it ultimately sold for about $43 million, at the time the most expensive residential property sale in the area. Later that year, the same buyer purchased 405 Chain Bridge Road, 407 Chain Bridge Road and 3915 44th Street for a total of $24 million. Since this purchase, all the properties at these addresses have been razed. And in March, while not on the same price level of the properties above, 3909 44th Street, sold for approximately $4 million, again to 600 CBR LLC. The home is adjacent to the properties above. Property records offer little in the way of help in determining the buyer’s identity and representatives associated with the aforementioned transactions declined to comment to UrbanTurf. However, anecdotally, UrbanTurf has heard that the buyer is from the United Arab Emirates and that settlement documents confirm this. (Urban Turf)

A rare 18th century home has come up for sale on 33rd St. Listed just under $4 million, 1524 33rd St. is being sold for the first time in over 50 years. And it comes with the history of being a tavern where Thomas Jefferson once stayed. The home is said to be built in 1788, and it occupies a shockingly large plot. The listing includes language from a 1999 walking tour book: “Traveling in the 1700’s, as described by 18th century English actor John Bernard, ‘A mile’s ride was about the most powerful experiment on one’s anatomy a man can desire.’ Unpaved streets proved impassable after a rainstorm and ‘the Yellow Tavern was the most gracious respite from the difficulties of travel.’ Built in 1788, it was originally two buildings that were joined much later. Normally guests in taverns shared beds with strangers, the ‘privy’ was outside, meals were unreliable, and bathing was done only during holidays. Here, the living was of a higher quality in order to attract the likes of Thomas Jefferson. When George Towne was a leading port, the tavern was a favorite stopping place for travelers and tobacco merchants from ‘Frederick Town’ as well as a popular meeting place of Thomas Jefferson and other notables. Here Mayor John Cox entertained General Lafayette; dinner of reed birds followed by dancing to music from the balcony.” (The Georgetown Metropolitan)

CULTURE WHERE ART AND LIFE MEET

HOUSE AND HOME THE NATIONAL BUILDING MUSEUM 401 F STREET, NW The National Building Museum presents House & Home, a kaleidoscopic array of photographs, objects, models and films that take us on a tour of houses both familiar and surprising, through past and present, challenging our ideas about what it means to be at home in America. Remarkable transformations in technology, laws and consumer culture have brought about enormous change in American domestic life. The breathtaking variety of stories about the American home surprise, teach and entertain. The exhibition features “pleasetouch” walls made of different materials used in residential construction over time, from adobe bricks to structural insulated panel (SIP) systems. Intricate scale models present iconic residential architecture including Fallingwater and Chicago’s Hancock Center. Three sets of specially commissioned films featuring contemporary and historical images round out the experience. House & Home’s galleries tell a full range of stories about the history of the American home. Designed by the awardwinning New York-based firm Ralph Appelbaum Associates, the exhibition is an immersive experience in which the galleries come alive with objects, photographs and sound.

THE LANGUAGE OF MAPS THE TEXTILE MUSEUM GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY 701 21ST STREET, NW Before the digital age, generations of explorers, governments, scientists and travelers relied on printed maps for navigation, military strategy, urban planning and more. Drawing from the Albert H. Small Washingtoniana Collection, this exhibition brings together maps from the 17th to the 21st centuries, each with its own symbolic language and story.
