Old Lyonians pip John Lyon to the post
The annual John Lyon v Old Lyonians fixture took place on Thursday 25 May at Sandy Lodge Golf Club. The weather was fantastic – unlike the conditions for this term’s earlier school fixtures – and the golfers played in beautiful sunshine and temperatures of 20°C.
The OLs ran out winners at the end of a fantastic match and all the games went down to the last two holes.
The OLs clinched two of the games with some outstanding putting on the last two greens, notably by Paul Harris
(OL 1968) who holed a 70-foot putt on the 17th green to win their match 2 and 1. Two of the other games went down to the wire and were halved in tension fashion on the 18th green. Despite the best efforts of the pupils and staff from the School, the OLs were the deserving winners.
Golf at John Lyon is continuing to grow exponentially, with pupils of all ages representing the School. The main body of the team comprises pupils in Years 9 and 10 – this is an exciting prospect for the future because these pupils are still to hit their peak, which will come as they move through the School. This October, the golf team will make its international debut, travelling to Hilton Head in South Carolina, USA to play alongside other UK schools against their American counterparts.
Head of Golf at John Lyon Pete Muhley says, “It is an exciting time to be a golfer at John Lyon and we look forward to the future of the sport at the school”.
