Preparation for US admissions

“As we are preparing to apply to US universities, Mrs Bamrah, the Careers Advisor, kindly organised a US admission talk in mid-May, tailored to a small cohort of Lower Sixth students. Ms Edgell, the US Universities Advisor from Harrow School, came in to speak to us about the vast array of universities and colleges in the USA and the application procedure. She informed us about the Common App – the US college/university online application portal – which is the equivalent of UCAS. She provided useful hints and tips on when and how to fill in the application and advice on how to write the Common App essay. This essay is very unlike the UCAS personal statement, as its focus is completely different. The essay can cover any topic but is primarily a way for the university to understand a student’s character, background and values. We also learnt about the academic and social life of studying in the US as universities there are keen on students making the most of the extra-curricular activities on offer. Importantly, Ms Edgell also covered how to finance our studies and living allowance. It was fascinating to discover the many scholarships and bursaries available to international students. We cannot thank Ms Edgell enough for taking the time and effort to help us with our American dream.”
