Firm Profile

During the past 35 years of professional experience in the United States and overseas, Johnson Fain has established itself as an architecture, planning and interior design firm known for its creative approach to the built environment. Scott Johnson, FAIA, Design Partner, and William H. Fain, Jr., FAIA, Partner for Urban Design and Planning, lead a diversified office of 60 professionals. The firm has received many awards for design excellence. During the last decade, the American Institute of Architects has recognized Johnson Fain with numerous awards at the national, state and local levels.

Each project is carefully designed to specific client needs, program, technical requirements and budget. Every assignment presents the opportunity to develop a uniquely appropriate design solution. This philosophy is fundamental to the firm. Our primary design objective is to identify and resolve the specific issues required by each assignment. Particular emphasis is placed upon defining not only project scope and intent, but also budget and schedule at the inception of the design process. Attention to all levels of detail and close client communication continue throughout the duration of the project to ensure the best possible match of client needs, design intent and cost effectiveness.

The architecture is crisp and modern yet designed to be timeless and in harmony with the surrounding estate. All design elements reflect a unity of winemaking, food and artful living.

GREAT WALL WINERY

The building presents itself as a long horizontal line connecting the tour experience of the working winery to the 59-room Hotel and Visitors Center, making it possible to walk at the same elevation through the Visitor Center, Hotel and the Winery Tour route.

BYRON WINERY

Born of natural materials the winery is formed of cedar planks, iron windows and zinc roofing. A long shaded portico runs the length of the building, providing entry to the tasting and barrel rooms, and an overview of the vineyards below.

An intermingling of the culinary and fashion worlds, looking to the classic fashion designers for visual themes. The silhouettes are feminine but structured and the style is modern with classic detailing.

AETNA GOLF RESORT

• 8,800 sq² Golf Clubhouse

• Visioning & Architectural Design to Restore Aetna Springs as a Premier Resort

• Reflects the Craftsmanship of the 1800s

Taking cues from the resort’s 1880s Bernard Maybeck designed dining hall, the clubhouse features large exposed wood trusses, stone columns and fireplaces, oversized chandeliers, and large sweeping verandas.

The original landmark clubhouse, designed by Sumner Hunt and constructed in 1911, was updated including the interiors, gardens, and Pro Shop in this multi-year project.

WALL HOUSE

The expansive living area is column-free, with the ceiling hung between two massive board-formed concrete walls. The Douglas Fir ceiling is open and naturally ventilated through an automated clerestory system producing patterns of light on the interior.

Emerging from its wooded hillside site as both a contrast to as well as an integrated part of its surrounding landscape. The house sits as a very modern and ordered series of rectilinear volumes clad in precise and beautifully finished exterior materials.

The exterior white metal cladding expresses the horizontality of the house, with perforations composed to allow light to spill in during the day and out at night. A central clerestory runs through the length of the house without interruption, bringing light and connecting the living areas.
