Reaching out and planning

FirstlyI’d like to shout out to all of our members in the Auckland, Northland and Waikato areas, our heart goes out to you guys. You’ve certainly had the short end of the stick with all the restrictions you’ve had to work under and try keep your hardearned businesses afloat.

I take my hat off to all of you and don’t forget to reach out to your fellow Master Joiner community for support if needed, you’d be surprised how much difference a phone call can make to someone who you know is struggling with all of this. In this digital age a text or email may be the quickest way to communicate but nothing beats a real phone conversation. Master Joiners are there to help in any way possible you just need to reach out.

On a lighter note. Master Joiners recently reached out to a good cross section of our members to

attend an education retreat with the aim to better educate our members on the benefits of being a member of the association and to get a better understanding of what head office and the executive do to support our membership.

This was the first exercise of its type and was rated a great success by all who facilitated and attended, so if you’re ever invited to attend one of these workshops in the future please don’t hesitate to put your hand up and participate. The only downside was that several participants from Auckland and Waikato were unable to attend due to covid restrictions but we plan to take this to them as soon as we are able to.

Education plays a major role in our industry, from the importance of training apprentices without whom our trade would simply die to training ourselves on better business practices to training

our key staff in growing more knowledge about business the industry and better practices all of which will grow our own businesses. This leads into surrounding yourself with skilled staff which makes succession planning a much simpler process. Succession planning just like myself is not something we prioritise to prepare ourselves for until sometimes it's too late or you’re getting to a stage in your working life where you want to take a backwards step from the day to day grind and start passing the torch to the next generation coming through. This isn’t something you can start too early and we need to ensure we’re passing our knowledge down the chain because believe it or not you probably know a lot more than you give yourself credit for.

That’s all from me, I hope you all have a good lead into the stupid season and just remember

the world doesn’t actually end at Christmas and restart at New Years so those jobs you can’t get done can most probably wait until next year. Hope you all have a good break and forget about work and Covid for a while.

At last Winter has gone and Summer is upon us. We have a truly bumper Christmas issue for you this time to see you through the holiday break. Easily fitted and adjusted hinges are key attributes of the modern hinge in the kitchen (and anywhere else). We have a few of the latest from the leading suppliers for those who are either building new or renovating their kitchens (and there are a lot of people doing this). Despite the handle less look in the kitchen remaining popular there is still great demand for handles as well. We have a look at some of the latest offerings. In the machinery sector we have a look at the use of saws and the related tool supply scene. There are new offerings from a number of suppliers as well. Of note are Fisher & Paykel, Amorini, Cardona and Halliday & Baillee.

An interesting item is the latest from well known kitchen manufacturer Peter Hay Kitchens. Always a forward thinker, he has put his money up front and made a significant investment for his business. They say everybody wants to know what Peter Hay is doing, well find out in this issue. We have our 2022 Wall Planner enclosed as well so you’ll be able to scope out the year from the kick off! A note here about the State of Industry reports in this issue: make for real interesting reading as to how the joinery, cabinetmaking and kitchen industries are faring and where they see themselves in 2022.

Well 2021 has been a colourful year with Covid ever present. It has seen us in and out of lockdown especially in Auckland so I think we are all looking forward to more freedoms over Christmas. Business has been, despite Covid, surprisingly resilient thanks in large part to a ongoing strong construction sector. Here’s hoping it continues into next year. Eumabois General Assembly 2021

A successful restart despite the Corona pandemic

Eumabois, the European Federation of woodworking machinery and tools manufacturer, held its annual General Assembly in November. After substituting the onsite event with a “Digital General Assembly” in 2020, the delegates and board members gathered again in person in Vienna.

The opening topic was the general outlook on the woodworking industry which has been showing a rapid and very positive recovery. The figures, despite the fact that also the woodworking industry suffers from high material costs and lack of raw material, indicate a sustained growth rate in the mid-term. The global demand remains high, as evidence of the good resilience of the sector in response to the crisis triggered by the Corona virus. Megatrends such as digitalization and industrial automation, as well as a growing demand for home furniture and kitchens, stimulated by travel restrictions and the cocooning effect, are driving the woodworking industry, too.

Looking at the Eumabois Exhibition Network 2021, most of the shows have been canceled. On the other hand, a full calendar of trade fairs is planned for 2022 with two top exhibitions events: HolzHandwerk in Nuremberg in March and Xylexpo in Milan with a new date in October. The positive signals coming from the exhibition sector are an important step towards the normality confirming the value and relevance of face-to-face events.

The meeting in Vienna was also used to officially launch the new Eumabois website with completely renewed and modern graphics. There were also important news on the technical projects side.: OPCUA (Open Platform Communication Unified

Architecture) got the marketing name “IZY”, which was officially presented to the market during LIGNA.Innovation Network on September 27th, 2021.

At the end of the Assembly, the president Jürgen Köppel expressed his sincere thanks to the hosting association FMTI and to all the present national associations, stating: “ … I firmly believe that one of the key pillars for the growth of our industry is our joint European approach.”

The next Eumabois General Assembly will be held on 22nd23rd of September 2022 in the city of Krakow, Poland.

JacksTech 2021 2022!

Along with many other events in Auckland, JacksTech 2021 was a victim of the COVID lockdown, so it’s been rescheduled for March 15-17, 2022.

It will still showcase the latest innovations in our industry from across the globe, with much of the technology displayed on show for the very first time in New Zealand. Highlights include the latest developments in laser edge processing and 5-axis CNC machining, along with Felder Group’s revolutionary (PCS) panel saw safety system.

Also on show will be the world’s fastest CNC nesting line, the Anderson GS-612; Fimal’s Concept 350 hybrid beamsaw/panel saw; and the Vitap K2 compact CNC machining centre.

The furniture industry finally met up once again at SICAM

Held in Pordenone, Italy, from 12th to 15th October, the twelfth edition of SICAM enjoyed a success that outstripped the most optimistic forecasts. With over 540 exhibitors from Italy and 28 other countries, the event marked a true confirmation of the strength of the sector of components and accessories for the furniture industry.

Everyone was extremely eager to meet up again at trade shows: see each other and come face to face, work out thought processes together, exchange ideas and assess projects. Indeed, this is the very point of trade fairs. And at SICAM it was made easy, with attention paid to all leading global markets. Furniture industry professionals attended from as many as 97 foreign countries in addition to Italy, representing over 7200 companies. 66% came from Italy and 34% from abroad. This widespread representation was hard to imagine in the weeks

leading up to the event due to all the restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the pandemic and with international flight schedules still far from 2019 levels.

“And yet many companies believed in us and invested with us,” explained Carlo Gobbi, SICAM founder and organiser.

“They kept fully abreast of the market situation and had a real desire to return to in-person trade shows, aware that new business can be tangibly developed in

this format.” By all accounts the atmosphere in the halls was similar to that seen in pre-pandemic times and there was a clear eagerness to reconnect and get back to working as normal, with even higher intensity.

“This year more than ever, it is true that those who came to Pordenone and chose to take part in SICAM in person had a very fulfilling experience,” Carlo Gobbi revealed. “The number of registrations to return in 2022

received at the event plainly prove this. We aren’t ones to blow our own horn, instead it is the actions of the companies themselves that show us whether the event works or not.”

SICAM 2021 certainly demonstrated that it was very effective. The trade fairs held as in-person events in this initial period of recovery have all clearly showed that the world of business cannot do without this timehonoured tool that is still so current and vital.

The date is set for October 2022, from Tuesday 18th to Friday 21st. The furniture industry already has its next meeting scheduled with the global business world in Pordenone.

Exceeding expectations, the in-person Pordenone show confirmed its position among the best of European trade fairs.

Some of these remain invaluable to customers who are still using older machinery – being able to get parts for a machine that you seldom use is a lot more affordable than having to replace the whole machine with a modern version. Rising Consents

Festive greetings, I hope the run up to Christmas is going well for everyone in industry, given the supply constraints, alert level changes and disruptions we all continue to navigate.

Despite the challenges we have all faced the industry continues to experience strong demand. The latest Residential consent data for the year to September 2021 set a record of 47,331 consents. The market value for the 12 months to September is $20.1b, up 26% year on year. September also saw 4,483 new homes consented, close to the highest number set the previous month of 4,490 new homes. Townhouses remain the hot favourite in Auckland, making up 47% of all Auckland’s new consents in the year to September 2021, vs 21% of all new consents for the rest of New Zealand.

Non-residential (commercial) consents for the year to September 2021 also rose by 10% to $7.7b year on year. This data indicates the potential for sustained strong demand for our industry and is positive news.

Peter Hay Kitchens makes next move new edgebanding technology from HOMAG Group

In forty eight years of operation Peter Hay Kitchens have always been at the forefront of the New Zealand kitchen manufacturing industry in the development of new processes and the use of technology. The recent purchase of three edgebanding lines from German machinery supplier HOMAG Group including the latest airTec technology has continued that tradition, keeping the company in touch with the marketplace and more importantly, expanding on their journey of creating the most advanced Batch One processing line for cabinet production, a process that started back in 2015. Bob Nordgren from JOINERS Magazine spoke with founder and owner Peter Hay and his Sales and Marketing Manager Karl O’Hanlon about this next step in the journey and what these edgebanding lines mean for Peter Hay Kitchens.

“The nature of the kitchen business has changed. We saw that back five years ago when we went through a major change in production theory: the move to Batch One production which enables us to effect large volume manufacturing of a one off product thereby meeting the emerging demand for customisation but at an economic cost.” says Peter.

“The move to HOMAG Group with the three new edgebanding processing lines is a significant next step: it allows us to keep pace, but more importantly expand on our 4.0 project which we see as market leading.” explains Peter. “We have invested a lot over the last few years but we have achieved a lot as well. We believe what we are doing is the right thing for this business, that’s why we bought not one, not two but three of the latest in edgebanding production line machines.”

The attitude and approach to this business is impressive as Peter comments “At Peter Hay Kitchens we have a great group of people developing and deploying this pathway forward. We all understand kitchens, where they are heading and how we fit into that. Technology, automation and software play an important role in that while the move to HOMAG Group brought synergy through not only factory processing but a strong connection through the integration of the Imos software that runs the design and production planning as well.”

One of that team is Karl O’Hanlon, Sales and Marketing Manager. Peter Hay Kitchens is the biggest business of its kind here in New Zealand. Operating from their 10,000 square metre site in the Auckland suburb of Manukau it produces up to a thousand kitchens a month. Karl comments “We have always struggled

for benchmarking ideas and theories here in New Zealand as the scale of the business sets it apart a little. Because of this we have often looked overseas however I believe where we are now is truly world class.” Peter adds “It’s amazing how far we have come, but also where we are heading. It really is exciting and its that excitement that pushes the team and provides them unique opportunities to work on pathways forward which are not always possible in a lot of businesses. The funny thing was, when we sat down and finally made the purchase decision, it was those things that stood out with HOMAG Group as well.”

The objective has been to network the entire production process from board to finished product, to make it a more efficient, successful business. “HOMAG Group, in addressing the production issues we faced were genuinely interested in getting the process right: they bought new ideas to the table. This is these days an ‘intelligent” business where the efficiencies and gains made from automation for example are balanced against the realities of running a business of real size.” comments Karl.

This next step for Peter Hay Kitchens begins with the arrival and installation of the three edgebanding lines in the coming months. We will check on progress in a later issue.

New features for cutting and nesting

Where do joinery and carpentry businesses lose the most time? Where is the most potential to save material and thus money? HOMAG has looked at these questions intensely. The result is practical solutions that make manual cutting and nesting processing more comfortable and that save more material

Reusing offcuts

In the intelliDivide cutting optimization, the employee defines an individual dimension that specifies the size from which an offcut should be reused. This offcut can be registered as available material with a simple click in the app. It is then included in the next optimization of the cutting patterns. Practical: the cutting assistant prints a special offcut label with all relevant information directly. This ensures that the offcut is clearly labeled and easy to find again.

Overview of the panel stock

The ‘Cutting Production Set’ now allows the user to manage both the stock location and the panel stock, including offcuts. As soon as a cutting pattern has been transferred to the tablet at the saw, the material required is reserved. Once a job has been processed, the assistant automatically deletes the panels used. An individual minimum stock level for each panel type informs the operator in good time when material needs to be reordered.

More flexibility with strip cutting

The assistant also supports those who cut their panels into strips first. The operator sees a graphical display of how wide the strips should be cut. Each strip can also be given a separate label, thus preventing them from being mixed up. The operator can therefore cut a large number of strips first and then process them later. Longer interruptions or continuing work the next day are no longer an issue.

Nesting assistant: Reduce costs and increase efficiency

The new ‘Nesting Production Set’ brings the advantages of the cutting assistant to your nesting machine. The assistant supports you in the automatic calculation of your nesting patterns. The optimization software places the individual components in the nest as close to each other as possible. This allows you to reduce material consumption and save costs. At the same time, you print an individual label for each nested part. This ensures that each workpiece has all the information required for the subsequent processing. The set is the ideal entry level solution for labeling your components and is perfect for retrofitting label printing on HOMAG nesting machines. You can thus create the basis for integrated processing data in your joinery during the nesting process.

With intelliDivide cutting optimization, the employee can define an individual dimension that specifies the size from which an offcut should be reused.

What’s in a name?

The name Toitū was the result of a brainstorm at the company’s sales conference and was enthusiastically supported by the company’s manufacturing manager and a key account manager who represent different iwi – and ensured there was consultation with iwi around its usage in this context. Toitū has several interpretations, including 'enduring', 'untouched', 'kept pure', 'protected' – and also 'sustainable'.

We look at a couple of different examples of recent saws purchases and find they can provide both a general purpose cutting tool around the factory as well as the best solution to specific cutting requirements.

When it comes to cutting panel or solid timber SCM have a saw to fit most requirements and production levels. We spoke to three recent buyers of different SCM saws, a beamsaw, a panel saw, and a hybrid of the two, and found that while they were purchased for different reasons the results were the same, efficient cutting of panel and happy owners.

Savory Group

Auckland based building company Savory is a large construction firm whose work covers both build and fit-out, a lot of it in the commercial sector, a lot of it requiring a beam saw. Recently they decide it was time to replace their existing one.

“Our old saw had done its timeit was actually run on a windows 98 operating system,” says Production Manager, Greg Burkett. “It had performed well but was becoming too outdated, prone to break downs and replacement parts were getting difficult to obtain. Our saw doesn’t get used solidly all day but we need it there when we have the right job.”

“When looking for a replacement we needed something that pretty much did the same thing, which was to efficiently cut large runs of components. Our selection was narrowed to a couple of companies whose range of saws and service

suited our requirements and in the end we purchased the SCM Gabbiani from Machines R Us, for several reasons.

“We had had good experience with John Fleet and Machines R Us in the past, and they had a beamsaw in the SCM Gabbiani P which was ideal for our use and volume requirements, finally it was also in our price range.

“It is a very cost effective and time efficient saw when doing the same thing to a lot of panel. We generally use it for squaring up large quantities of sheet material such as ceiling tiles or cutting sheets of ply for wall linings. Depending on panel size we will cut up to 4 sheets at a time

“It is the ideal saw for us. Easy to set up, easy to change blades, easy to adjust the scribers, it’s a nice machine.”

Masterwood Joinery

Masterwood Joinery in Cromwell are known for their award winning kitchens and know the importance of having the right machinery options for each part of the manufacturing process to achieve the optimum result.

Their machinery include various CNC and edgebanders and also a recently purchased SCM sliding table saw. Operations Manager, Dave Wilson comments on the reasons behind the purchase and what they use it for.

We also use it day to day to cut panel to size and it is easy to change the blade to rip timber when we need to, but its ability to cut on the angle was our main requirement. It actually does 45 degrees both ways, which is useful.

“It’s easy to use and very precise, with the automatic fence setting you simply key in the measurement and it does it - bang on.

“Dealings with Daniel and the team at Machines R Us was very pleasant, great technicians and training was exactly what was required. Great saw, very happy with the purchase.”

Mr Shelf

Mr Shelf in Tauranga specialise in storage cabinets and shelving systems for the residential, commercial and retail sector and as such cut a lot of sheets of panel, until recently on a beamsaw.

When it came time for a replacement they opted for a SCM Class PX 350i, a type of hybrid panel saw with features found on both a beamsaw and a sliding table saw. The material stays still, the

saw carriage moves when cutting and the operator can work from both sides. But the main benefit for Mr Shelf was the blade tilts to 45 degrees.

“With our business getting more mechanised we were not using the beamsaw to cut such volume anymore and this machine provided the ability to cut angles as well,” says manager Russell Reardon. “This way we have the beamsaw capability when we want it but are able to do angle cuts as well and the changeover and set up from one to the other is very quick and easy.

“From ordering to installation and subsequent use everything has gone very smoothly, no issues. It was a good buy and a very good machine to use.”

K940 - innovation and accuracy

Set up by Gary Firman 30 years ago, Firman Joinery is the largest joiner in Oamaru, with 15 staff and large, new premises on the city’s Northern boundary. Hamish Kane joined the Firman team in 2000, eventually joining Gary as Co-owner 12 years later.

Today Firman Joinery have a history and reputation for craftsmanship that extends well beyond Oamaru and deep into the Central Otago region. Working almost exclusively with a regular group of building companies in the area, Firman’s are well known for their quality work in high-end residential joinery, with plenty of Master Joiner awards in their showroom to prove it.

It’s easy to see how the stack of awards came about, because Firman Joinery’s staff are all trade qualified or in the apprentice

programme – even the project managers/detailers in the office have a trade (builder, joinery). With such a high level of skill available then it’s no surprise that quality comes as standard from the Firman Joinery team. But good skills need to be paired with good tools, and Firman’s Felder panel saw is certainly a good match.

Felder’s K940 X-Motion, supplied by Jacks, offers all the renowned features and innovations of the Austrian woodworking group’s panel saw range. The K940 has a 3.2 metre sliding table with Felder’s “X-Roll” system - a precision guiding system that handles maximum loads without compromising the smooth and accurate movement of the table. “Accuracy was a key reason for buying the Felder,” says Hamish. “We were looking for a quality cut - something that enabled us to take material straight from the saw and assemble it, every time.” With a powered rip-fence controlled from an overhead touchscreen panel, the K940 X-Motion provides powerful, fast and programmable cutting. “For the right job, the overhead controller and powered fence certainly saves us time” says Hamish. “And we’re getting repeatable results and consistent quality.”

A 7.35kW (10hp) motor means the K940 X-motion is equally at home working with panel or solid timber – an important factor given Firman Joinery’s wide variety of work, from high-gloss panel kitchens through to recently completing a complete house-lot of solid timber joinery for a 900 square metre build.

With Oamaru and the wider Central Otago’s residential market booming, and an order book just about to stretch into 2023, Gary and Hamish are confident about Firman Joinery’s future. “I’ve never seen Oamaru so busy in my lifetime” says Hamish. “We’ve been lucky in the South Island - even at Level 3 we were able to work nearly as normal.We’ve needed to because business is booming.”

3D presentation software VORTEK Spaces has been creating a bit of talk in the New Zealand design community lately. Easy to use and compatible with a wide range of popular CAD design software, Vortek Spaces enables designers to present their designs to clients in stunningly realistic videos and walk-throughs. We spoke to several early users who are finding the software particularly useful in allowing them to share their vision with clients and personalise their presentation.

For kitchen designer Sydney Young from Matamata Glass & Joinery, Vortek Spaces is a great selling tool. “It allows me to present a new design and make it look like the clients home. It gives me the ability to easily show what I am trying to do and really helps with colour and material selection which can speed up the process considerably”.

Sydney purchased Vortek in June last year and uses it alongside Cabinet Vision. “I found it very easy to pick up, some initial assistance from Joinery It and then an hour or so link up to Vortek in Canada gave me the basic operation and it was easy from there.”

“It is a very effective program, I simply import my design from Cabinet Vision and from there can change lighting or materials

as I or the client wish. I would probably spend a couple of hours on finishing my kitchen design but it is definitely worth it. In fact once you start you really get hooked it gets into your blood.”

Cherie van der Poel, designer and director at Got It Made Kitchens in Te Awamutu has been using Vortek for the last 18 months and has found it a game changer for selling designs and concepts. She uses it with CabMaster software to produce 3D walk-throughs which are recorded and shown to clients.

“Customers love its visual nature and it gives them the confidence to go with a design, they can see it and imagine themselves in that space. Not everybody is good at reading plans and Vortek saves time in getting ideas across. It makes a big difference to us in closing sales quicker.

“It is not as difficult to learn as you might expect you can be up and running within a couple of days on basic designs and pretty specialised within a couple of months. The online assistance is very good although we haven’t needed to use it much as it’s pretty easy to work things out yourself.

“It’s great to have access to such technology in our industry - the future is the visual product it is huge for our industry and great that it is available to the joinery and kitchen industry without it being cost prohibitive for smaller users.

Michael Murray a designer with Kitchen Inspirations in Auckland has been using Vortek Spaces for four years in kitchen and cabinet design and appreciates its realism and its ability to easily makes changes on the fly.

“Colours and lightning are really good and it produces excellent high quality renders. I post renders on social media and get a lot of request from other designers as to what I am using. It works very well with Cabinet Vision, the transfer of files is very simple and any changes upload automatically, just like resaving a file.

“The software has undergone a lot of development recently with an expansive 3D warehouse/ store where you can not only find but also upload and develop components to achieve that personalised look for your client.

“The 3D walk-through video is very good. It really helps people to read the space, not everybody is necessarily very good at understanding floor plans and elevations whereas they instantly identify with the 3D visual.

He works in Cabinet Vision then exports to Vortek for the final rendering and then client presentation. He enjoys the ability to make changes on the fly while talking and discussing options with clients.

Real shows are back for Homag

Our trade show Live. HOMAG has shown us how much we have missed being together: live demonstrations, personal conversations and wellattended webinars.

Even though it was ‘only’ a digital conference, a lot of us experienced the real feeling of being at a trade fair: talking shop with like-minded people, impressing those who love wood with the latest technology or answering practical questions on machinery. Our experts were in their element, just like the 1700 carpenters and joiners who also took part. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone for this and we have built on it, with digital content and real events on site, at the HOMAG Treff. Because for the first time since 2018, there was a classic HOMAG Treff in October and November in Holzbronn and Herzebrock.

Among other things, HOMAG presented solutions about intelligent automation, process optimization and further development of mobile operation. Visitors also could see how they can use digital assistants from

HOMAG to increase performance and efficiency while ensuring sustainability at the same time.

Every joinery has its own story, every business has different requirements — including for nesting. Therefore, HOMAG has developed the new nesting platform with a clear focus: maximum flexibility. The new generation is automated and works in single operation, from 3-axis technology to 5-axis technology and on table sizes from 1.25 x 2.5 m to 2.1 x 7.4 m — in half-sized or full-sized format.

“We looked at the technology and the requirements for modern nesting in the finest detail to develop the machine from scratch,” explains Vera Zimmermann, product manager for CNC.

The result is a modular nesting platform that picks up on

innovative functions and the guiding principles of energy efficiency in equal measure. The main components are a highly modular, switchable vacuum and air cushion table concept as well as newly designed suction components that have been optimized using CFD flow simulation. There are also innovations in the area of workpiece handling. For example, different technology levels can be selected and automation concepts enhanced or changed quickly and easily using the plug solution created.

Vaughn and Nicky Tongs, owners of Tweakit Joinery Solutions in Palmerston North, have a favourite saying … “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.”

This principle of care inspired them to upgrade their factory and provide a productive and healthy workspace for their employees.

The recent purchase of a new CNC nesting machine and edgebander required a completely different approach in dust management to

Business grows with Proform

For Richard Hart, coming home to set up his own interior joinery business back in February 2020 was a dream come true. Having travelled to both England and Australia to learn his trade he set up shop in Tarras, not far from Wanaka, as HBH Joinery Ltd.

From a small but workable factory Richard and his staff of three have steadily grown their reputation for customised kitchens, vanities and wardrobes. “We have steadily seen an increase in work despite Covid and last year I decided we needed to improve our production level to meet demand.” comments Richard. The factory is some 230m2 on a long narrow site making workspace a premium. “I had seen various CNC machines in action and in particular I had liked the Proform ATC25/13R from Proform CNC Ltd, as it had a small footprint that suited our factory yet could optimise the cutting of a 1220mm by 2440mm sheet. It was a well priced, robust, gantry style machine that had the features we were

looking for, including the userfriendly Windows 10 operating software and especially the twelve position rotary automatic tool changer which has proved to be a real time saver.” The machine was installed and commissioned back in March this year. “The service has been unreal: Proform’s Technician Aidan, did a really professional install followed by some training which saw us up and running in no time flat.” recalls Richard.

In the months that have followed, Richard and his team noticed an increase in work. “We found with the machine were able to do a lot of curved work, something that happens a lot in kitchens these days. Along with Enroute software on the machine we use Mozaik 3D drawing programme which is basically a Cabinet Vision product from the USA. Funnily enough, thinking that the machine would also mean not needing to employ

more staff, turned out I had to get another staff member just to handle the increase in work we were getting!” The machine gets sporadic heavy use. When they have the work and the pressure is on it can be running eight hours a day for days on end. A nice extra was the team from Proform also installed the dust extraction system for use with the machine.

“The shift to CNC has proved a winner both in terms of increased production but also in improving the offer we can make to our clientele: a great product made on time for the right price.” Things are running well down Tarras way...

Colour matching protocols

Your client needs new doors but loves the existing frames and wants them to match. Or maybe that young couple wants new countertops that are the exact same colour as the antique sideboard they inherited – sound familiar?

Cabinetmakers get colour matching requests from designers and architects all the time … but it’s something of an art form …

Let’s talk colour matching, specifically wood stain. There’s alcohol, water-soluble dyes, oil stains, water-based stains, gel stains, glazes, pigments, toners, so many different ways to arrive at the final colour and look; it can drive you nuts!! But does it have to be so confusing?

Because we use various techniques and materials, we used to mix all kinds of crazy stuff together to find that perfect match. Then we realised the perfect match is often sitting in a can on the shelf! And if the perfect colour already exists in a commercial product, we say, “why not?” The formula’s always consistent, and if you need to match that colour again, you’ll know where to start … and finish.

Now, just to be clear, if you’re asked to do a colour match for a client, it’s incredibly important to manage their expectations. Take a cabinetmaker we’re currently working with. He’s building a custom oak piece for someone who wants the colour to match a bamboo cutting board, and let’s be honest; there’s no magic wand that will ever make oak look like bamboo – a critical detail many don’t realise.

So there we were, ready to pull out all the pigments, dyes and lacquer. But before we started to look like a science lab, we decided to see if there wasn’t a pre-made solution first. We tested all the general finishes. The top contenders were oil-based Pecan, oil-based Antique Cherry, Nutmeg gel stain and DEFT Light Brown Water-Based Wood Stain from PPG and MIROSTAIN low grain raising waterbased stain from Mirotone. The differences are subtle, some redder, some browner, others more yellow. The red oak was affecting the one thing they all had in common they were applied to, showing the importance of testing your stains on the same material you’ll actually be working with.

Bamboo contains a range of colours, and mimicking it ideally would be impossible, so our goal was a happy medium between the light and dark streaks. We decided to go with the Light Brown dye stain, and honestly,

we don’t think we could have gotten a closer match if we tried! Once our cabinetmaker gets his client’s approval (we’re confident he will), this is a done deal!

Well-known Dunedin firm Ron Kirk Joinery has had the whole range of edgebanders during their 30 year history. Hayden Kirk, son of founder Ron Kirk and now Directing Manager, started as an apprentice 23 years ago. He remembers – not so fondly – his early edgebanding experiences.

“We had one of those hot air guns that heated up the back of the tape, and then we’d spend hours and hours scraping and cleaning to get the final result. It was a big day when we got our first Janssens edgebander, but even then processing and cleaning up a whole kitchen was several days’ work.”

Edgebanding at Ron Kirk Joinery has got more efficient since those early days. From the early 2010s they operated an Ambition 1210 from German edgebanding specialists Brandt (now rebranded Homag). But earlier this year Hayden and the team took another step up the technology ladder, buying a new Homag EDGETEQ S-200 1130AT – becoming the first joinery shop in Dunedin capable of processing laser-edged tape.

“We’ve always kept our eye on developments in technology.” says Hayden, “and we knew laseredged tape was a technology we’d adopt when Homag’s airTec units came on a model that would suit our size.” The Brandt was running two glue tanks of EVA glue: clear and white. The finish was excellent but Hayden points out that doing their corner rounding on a separate machine was adding time to each kitchen, as well as taking up valuable workshop space. The Homag is much the same size as the previous edgebander, but comes with on-board corner rounding, ensuring their edge processing has sped up, but within a smaller overall footprint in the workshop.

Why did Hayden move to laseredge tape? “The benefits airTec promised were compelling,” explains Hayden. “Even better, they’ve all turned out to be true. For a start, it seals the board better. There’s no clean up. No excess glue. Also, we can charge a premium for it. And it brings all of our high-gloss work under our control.” This last point is a significant one. “With a lacquered kitchen we were dependent on the painter. Any damage or mistakes found at installation meant getting

a re-cut panel back to the painter. Relying on others affected our timing, and if they were busy there could be significant delays and costs. Now everything is done in-house so stuff like this can be fixed by us, and quickly.”

Hayden and the team are now using laser-edge tape on all components in their kitchens, including the carcasses. They get their Homag serviced regularly by Jacks, and have it set up to enable most of their settings and changes to be adjustable from the controller. “Unless the customer has specifically requested 2mm edging we find it quicker and we get a better result putting everything through at 1mm with airTec,” says Hayden. “There’s really good availability of colours now. We’re even finding some architects specifying high gloss tape.”

It’s not only edgebanding where Ron Kirk Joinery has been an early adopter of technology. Their Format-4 Kappa 550 e-motion saw was the first in NZ to be linked to nesting software – providing a stepping stone to the nesting efficiency they now have with their CNC. “So long as you have good machines and capable staff

in the workshop, the key area for efficiency is the design work,” he says. “With the combination of software we use now, I can show a customer exactly what their kitchen will look like in their house before we even start processing. Given the investment many of our customers are making I think it’s important for them to see what they’re paying for, and so we can get it right for them first time.”

Given how busy the team at Ron Kirk Joinery are, and with their reputation meaning customers keep coming back time after time, it’s clear they’re doing just that –getting things right first time.

From sawmills to furniture construction – the area gripper FMHD from Treotham is frequently used in wood working. Schmalz developed its area gripper FMHD to allow particularly narrow, heavy, or extra long sections to be lifted quickly and safely.

Solid wood materials such as cross laminated timber (CLT) exceed previous design limits for wood. Thanks to its high static

load-bearing capacity, CLT has long been used for industrial prefabricated houses. Architects can position doors and windows more flexibly as well as design higher ceilings and wider supports.

New formats also mean new possibilities. Treotham therefore increased the range of applications for its existing Schmalz area gripper FMHD with an extra wide quick-change system, third suction row, and oversized gripper construction.

Three Variants, Three Strengths

The area gripper FMHD-3R22 has a suction cell grid with three rows and allows handling of narrow slots with a width of 35mm or more. The area gripper FMHD250 has a wider suction plate for an increased lift capacity. With 3,500 N, its holding force is almost double that of the 3R22. The maximum gripper length is 2,492mm for both variants. The FMHD-2R28 provides greater lengths and can be up to 3,500mm long and handle workpieces with a width of 50 mm or more.

All three variants have an integrated vacuum reservoir and three-section design. Schmalz thus increases suction force and energy efficiency while also reducing maintenance work. Unstacking in layers or transferring porous and warped workpieces is easy – even in dusty sawmills.

NZDUCT+FLEX employ their own fulltime permanent install staff so the initial part of the process was to send one team down to do a walk over the new site, discussing machine numbers and positions, and re-calculate final duct runs with a view to re-using 100% of the original LIPLOCK ® modular ducting

to save money. The teams are building duct runs everyday so on the first site visit they quickly dismantled the entire ducting system and arranged transport for re-use at the new site along with the fan and complete filter (lifted by a hi-ab as one piece and repositioned outside the new premises).

to join everything up using the original modular duct. Invariably there were changes to machine positions despite these being agreed just weeks previously, but due to the large LIPLOCK® stock holding in 3 warehouses in Auckland, the installers could over night solve all of the issues resulting from these changes.

Aaron Proctor, in charge of the Maintenance Service offered to all customers, revisited the site last month to check that the whole system was still operating to JKF’s required specifications and equal to when the filter was first installed 5 years ago. The filter is still running on the original filter socks due to being correctly specified in the first instance : a huge maintenance saving for the business.

Not your average apprentice

Kelly Irvine isn’t your typical apprentice. She represents a growing trend in people who may have up to seven career changes in entirely different sectors before age 40.

Before starting her apprenticeship at Lee Brothers (Rotorua), Kelly worked a diverse range of jobs, from Promotions Coordinator in the entertainment industry for MediaWorks, to flying abroad, where she worked as an Account Manager for a coffee roastery in London. If she set her mind on something, no role title was out of her limits!

Like many Joiners, Kelly’s detailorientated nature has led to her fascination with woodworking and it was almost in the cards that her career would be within the joinery industry.

Like all good stories, there’s always a serendipitous moment. Kelly shares, “Lee Brothers listed an advertisement looking for an apprentice Joiner/Cabinet Maker on Seek. My partner had just been offered a job in Rotorua, so the timing was perfect. I applied, and I got the job.

“I feel at my best as a Joiner. It’s hands-on. I get to create unique pieces that clients get excited about. Being physically active is important to me and installing kitchens provides an all-body workout. The variety never ceases to surprise, one week I’ll be putting together a kitchen, and the next it will be a set of sashes or an entrance door.

As a joiner, you’re in a continuous cycle of accomplishment. Once a job is done you admire your output, reset, and move on to the next job – it’s undeniably awesome. I love it!”

Having the ‘insiders’ scoop’ of being a 32-year-old female in building and construction, Kelly says, “Being in full-time employment while working toward a qualification is of huge benefit. Having experienced work colleagues who can guide you through things, who have been in your position before is also very valuable. The experience is universal, and being qualified will open up some great opportunities.”

One of these opportunities was the chance to submit an entry into the 2021 Apprentice Best Timber project under two years hosted by the industry at the NZMJ Gala Awards dinner. Kelly admits, “Originally, I wasn’t keen to enter as I was so early on in my apprenticeship, but my boss (thankfully) put a little pressure on, and I got my entry board together and won.” For Kelly, the moment was a little surreal. “It was encouraging to know I was on the right track. Being thrown in the deep end has some real benefits especially seeing how proud of me my family were.”

Support is important for anyone pursuing their dream career and Kelly’s friends are not shy to show their encouragement. With a smile, Kelly teases, “A few of them are buying houses at the moment, so I think they can see the future benefits.”

Now more than ever before, it is healthy to reflect and find perspective. Kelly says, “A few months back, I made a stain quality, cedar TGV entrance door with top and bottom rails. When I was given the job, I felt a little intimidated, but my manager made me realise I did have the skills to complete the job. After a few discussions with my workmate, I progressed through the project, and the finished product only served to reinforce I’ve never felt so proud of myself and such a sense of achievement.

“It’s refreshing working in an industry with so many moving parts. As I see it, the career opportunities are endless. At this stage though, getting qualified is my main focus, and that will keep me busy for the next three years.”

For Kelly, life is great and both Rotorua and Lee Brothers are home. She says,“It’s refreshing to work for a company that sees the importance of work-life balance. I can pop into the workshop on a weekend to complete a personal project or spend time camping and hiking when the weather is warm. When it’s not – a game of darts and listening to music is how I like to recharge.

Being fully booked does not make us immune to hard times

Anotheryear has flown by, and it was another very different one for most of humanity. Many of us are pleased to be working in the building industry, at least there is plenty of work, and the outlook for 2022 remains strong.

However, for many people, these last couple of years has taken a toll on our mental health, and there are many people suffering as a result. It’s easy to think that this is just happening to us but remember the Master Joiners slogan; “don’t go it alone”. You are not alone. Reach out for help if you need it.

I have had more contact this year with joiners and cabinetmakers than almost any other year, and whilst firms are “flat out busy”, I see a lot more anxiety, uncertainty, frustration and generally less happiness.

There has also been a productivity drop due to the stop and re-start because of lockdowns. Every time we come back from a long break, it simply takes time to get “back into the groove”. To add to this, our industry has suffered interruptions and re-work from global and local supply chain delays.

Anyone providing joinery to new builds or major renovations will be having a significant % of their installation dates moved out due to delays in building materials, shortage of subcontractors, or further restrictions on site. This creates a never-ending juggling of the plan, and many companies are adjusting schedules daily as a result.

It’s an excellent time to remind ourselves that we can only influence or do something about the things within our control. For many situations, all we can do is communicate appropriately to the affected parties as soon as we know something has changed.

All these things increase costs, impact customer and team satisfaction, and reduce profit.

So, what can we do to minimise the impact and risks of these “happiness and profit hazards”?

• Be realistic; know your capabilities and capacity and plan to this level, allowing a % for job schedule slippage.

• Learn to say no, decide who your “A” customers are, and plan to look after them.

• Reduce complexity and supply risk by specifying reliable products from reputable sources. Simplify designs so that a site measure is either not required or there are less critical measurements required before you can start. Provide full-size templates if necessary, or mark the floor for builders, hold each other to account for accuracy.

• Review your trading terms to allow for larger deposits to cover more materials, reserve the right to change the specification of some items, with consent, when supply impacts your start date or results in additional site visits and extended snag lists.

• Utilise the clause in your t&c’s to increase prices if the quote is past its expiry date, if you don’t have such a clause, get advice, and add it in.

• Consider adding a clause to allow you to use a variation process when extra labour costs will be incurred due to site schedule changes or return to site trips to fit

hardware or other items not available at the initial installation time (often items specified by other parties). Talk to your clients about this.

• Review your prices and hourly charge-out rates, make sure you charge for professional services such as design, technical advice or drawings for building consent or client sign off. Don’t just think they are an overhead cost, they are not.

• List Health and Safety compliance in your pricing and if appropriate, disclose this amount to client. These costs have been imposed on you and will ultimately be passed to the consumer.

• When you face a situation where a client requests to delay for a few weeks, and you have no more space for 3-6 months, let them know your situation and that you may not be able to make a firm commitment to a new date if they give up their booking. They may miss out and must wait. Just like what is happening to NZ citizens trying to get a MIQ booking. Let clients know in advance of this potential situation during the sales process.

How to avoid getting stuck with

Foryears we have been lamenting the poor productivity of the New Zealand building industry in comparison to other developed countries, and it’s a documented fact backed up by solid evidence. It’s not that kiwi tradesmen are lazy or incompetent – the causes relate more to geographic and population factors – but it does mean we pay more for building materials and services than we should do. The preferred solutions are greater competition in the building materials sector, greater reliance on prefabrication, and greater standardisation of buildings, but they are tough obstacles to overcome. MBIE are trying to free up prefabrication from red tape and improve the product certification system, but at the same time they are making life tougher for builders, joinery manufacturers and building materials merchants through increased liability.

Then add to that mix the impact of the covid-19 pandemic, and we have building prices going through the roof. It’s all due to basic economics – demand exceeding supply. Demand has increased due to the Government pumping borrowed money into the economy and consumers not being able to spend it on overseas holidays. Supply has decreased due to a reduction in domestic timber milling capacity, domestic and overseas manufacturers mistakenly reducing their production in anticipation of a pandemic-induced recession, and the global freight industry doing the same thing.

Given that joiners are sometimes signing up projects that won’t be able to start for six months or more and accepting orders that won’t be able to be delivered for a similar period - when substantial price rises over that period are inevitable - there will be an increased focus on the joinery supplier’s ability to pass on cost increases in the months to come. And that will create tension not only with clients who can’t cope with the inevitable budget blowout, but also with their banks who are increasingly insisting on genuine “fixed price” projects and are seemingly blind to the realities of variations, provisional sums, and cost fluctuations. Because those are the three main reasons why so-called fixed prices are never fixed.

How are joiners going to protect themselves against their profitability being eroded by these unprecedented price rises in the aftermath of the pandemic?

The best way is by charging on a cost reimbursement basis so that property owners pay the true cost of materials and labour at any given time. However that leaves property owners uncertain about their ability to fund their project, so they naturally want their suppliers to assume the risk of price rises. The suppliers can do that if they build in large contingencies into their fixed prices (at the expense of the property owner) and if they get their own suppliers and subcontractors to commit to fixed prices. But in these days of high demand coupled with

material shortages and long leadtimes, they aren’t going to do that. Alternatively, joiners can stockpile building materials in anticipation of using them on some project later on, but they bear the cost of procurement and storage and they run the risk that many of those materials will turn out to be superfluous.

That leaves us with the three standard ways to vary prices in a fixed price contract – variations, provisional sums, and cost fluctuations. You can only charge for a variation if you are required to do something different from what you originally agreed to do, so that won’t help you if the project hasn’t changed, but the cost of it has. Provisional sums are appropriate if there are certain components of a project that simply can’t be priced accurately in advance, but if that applies to the whole of the project and you make the whole of the contract price provisional, then all you are doing is effectively converting a fixed price contract into a cost reimbursement one, and the customers won’t wear it. That leaves you with cost fluctuations, and you will only be able to pass those on if your contract allows you to do so.

Cost fluctuation clauses in contracts vary widely, so what you can do depends on the particular wording in your contract – assuming you have an entitlement to adjust your price for cost fluctuations in the first place. For example that entitlement may

be restricted to the cost of labour, or subcontractors, or materials, or any combination of them. And assuming you are allowed to make the adjustment, then what you are entitled to adjust for, is the difference between the rates and prices that applied when you originally accepted the order, and the rates and prices that apply when it comes time to invoice for your goods and services. So you will have to have some way of proving what the difference is. That means having written records of what you based your original price on – wages and salaries, and quotes or estimates from subcontractors and suppliers – and then similar records of what those inputs cost you now.

Sometimes an ability to pass on cost increases is subject to those cost increases not being reasonably foreseeable at the time the Contract is signed. If your cost fluctuation clause is qualified in that way, then whether you are caught out by the no-foreseeability requirement will depend on how widely-known the current supply shortage was when you signed your contract. If it was widely known, then your customer is likely to argue that you took the risk of price increases that you knew were likely to eventuate. You would have to argue in response that although you knew there was a global pandemic, you were no better equipped to foresee what the Government response would be or how global supply chains would be affected, than anyone else.

Finally, you might be obliged to do what you can to resist any price increases and procure subcontracts and materials on the basis of fixed prices that cannot be increased during the course of the your work. In that case you would argue that it simply isn’t feasible to obtain fixed supplier and subcontractor pricing in the current market. You would need to get statements verifying that from your suppliers and subcontractors, if you are put to the test.

AUCKLAND / NORTHLAND

Since our last update in August, Auckland joiners have been restricted by Covid. With 5 weeks of level 4 lock down and now operating in level 3 for the past 7 weeks, with looking like we will be in level 3 at least until 29th November when the government reviews the settings depending on the vaccination rates.

Operating at Level 3 and having Covid in the community is causing all sorts of headaches for our businesses, from difficulties in doing business in general, supply of materials and lose of production hours as staff must isolate for 14 days being a close contact. Also we have companies where the workers are not permitted to cross the border daily, so currently not working and no subsidy is available from the government.

Vaccination is all the talk of the town, with some building site and suppliers indicating that they will only allow people double vaccinated on their site. Thus, causing a lot of decision in Joinery companies if you can force your employees to get vaccinated or not, knowing joiners are hard to come by and no one wants to terminate employees.

Shortages of timber supplies is still a bit of a mixed bag with finger jointed pine products coming back online along with pre profiled timber sections. On the other hand Cedar supply is still under pressure with some sizes required for double glazing now not available till March 2022.

All in all, the industry is looking positive with plenty of activity being reported in the near future.

CANTERBURY

The Canterbury region is continuing as the rest of the year has gone, with extremely high workloads and staffing pressures. Most of our members are fully booked for this year and well into next year. Some supplies are still difficult to get for some of our members, organisation and planning ahead is a must when

ordering. Our members are busy getting photos and boards ready for our 2nd local Canterbury Master Joiner awards in April next year. This will be another great social occasion for our members and associates.

We had a very strong response to our Canterbury pay rate survey. With a good mixture of small, medium and large business completing the survey. Ian Featherstone of Glass Half Full compiled this for us and it was great to have him present the results on zoom to all the members who participated in the survey. Members commented that this information would help them in their future planning.

The recent Master Joiners survey about retirement age of our members is a big concern looking forward to the future. Of the 120 members that completed this survey, a quarter were due to retire in the next 10 years. This is very scary. We need to come up with ideas about how to address these issues and start thinking about succession plans.

On the farm, cool and wet spring weather has meant that grass and crops have been slow. But it has finally warming up and things are starting to grow.

CENTRAL

There hasn’t been a whole lot of change since my last report. The Central Region is still facing high demands for new builds and also renovations. Top of the list for most people at the moment is to upgrade their kitchen. This is causing most of our members to use a waiting list system or just turning people away. Some of our specialist joiners are managing to plug the holes with little jobs that have been on the back burner for months – so this is positive.

The fall-out from Auckland staying in Level Four for longer than the rest of the country is really showing now. Most new builds are now behind schedule. This has caused holes in production for our members, that they are not able to fill at the drop of the hat due to the lead time on materials. This along with trying to keep stock levels higher than normal is hurting cash flow.

A lot of us are facing battles with trying to get colour selections from clients a lot earlier than usual – months out from production, to secure the product for them. It would also be great if suppliers in Auckland were able to explore back-up plans/options for getting stock to customers outside of Auckland should there be another lockdown.

continues to be an issue in the Region. Qualified staff are hard to come by. Training is the way to go. We continue to have a steady stream of apprentices signing up which is fantastic.

It is going to be a busy a run into Christmas this year. We all need to keep an eye on each other and offer support where we can. I know everyone will be looking forward to the annual close down and some quality time with our families.

HAWKES BAY / POVERTY BAY

Covid Xmas around the corner and Summer is knocking on the door, things are warming up in ‘the Bay’. The Magpies are on fire at the top of the NPC. Property prices are also on fire in ‘the Bay’, soon to be dampened by the Government ... time will tell. Most if not all HB/PB Master Joiners are cranking along, provided the short comings of supply aren’t holding jobs up with materials. This has been an ongoing trend over the last year or more making it hard to understand when we will get to the other side of it. My Spidey senses say it’s going to be like this for some time. Gone are the days of ordering just in time per job, carrying stock seems to be the way forward. Staffing numbers seem to be a go to topic of discussion. Training seems to hit a note with leading us out of this. The Government Apprenticeship Boost has helped getting the initial numbers, further support will be needed. Relying on the pool of Tradesmen already in our industry is not sustainable for our future.

We enjoyed a good turn out at our combined Mid-Winter Xmas Dinner and AGM during the winter where we acknowledged Murry McIndoe past president and strong supporter of MJ. Murray input was and will always be appreciated at our meetings. Let’s hope he calls in when he’s not Camper vanning around. Our next meeting, we are off land yachting.

TARANAKI

Well, with the warm weather and these longer days, it is great to spend sunny evenings with the family. Now it’s November and only 8 weeks to Christmas, so where has the year gone?

I suppose we were all a little shocked going into lockdown in the middle of August, as this gave us no time to organize anything, barely enough time to get ourselves home if we were away.When we did return to work, trying to remember what orders were due, and where things were at, was hard enough, but also having Auckland closed made things really difficult. Most suppliers were distributing things evenly, to ensure they was enough product to supply everyone, and keep them in production.

Once Auckland did open under Level three, it took time to get the freight moving so the supply chain was moving but slowly. This did cause freight problems, which meant goods that would usually arrive in a couple of days, were now taking up to 10 days to arrive at Taranaki Joinery company’s.

Now with the run into Christmas most members have reported being busy. I think the key to success at this time of year and to be prepared for the New Year, we need to be really organised, making sure materials and goods are ordered early enough, to be available when they are needed. Sometimes other trades have held us up with deadlines not being met, which means our timeframes are put out. The other trades are also affected by material shortages and freight delays. They are in the same boat as us, so patience and understanding are required, although this can be a challenge. Most of us have full factory’s of kitchen and other joinery product waiting to be installed, any delays cause problems and then rescheduling can prove to be difficult.

Finding staff is an on-going headache that our sector faces. There are very few qualified

tradespeople around, even finding a young person ready to give the joinery trade a go, is tough.We now need to think outside the square and try to attract people to the industry, succession planning. Most Taranaki building trade companies report being busy, with some even being booked out up to a year in advance. So lets hope we get to level 1 before Christmas and we can enjoy a good Christmas with family and friends, and have a good break to recharge the batteries for a busy year in 2022 -

WAIKATO / BOP

Overall, the Waikato/BOP region is experiencing a boom of activity. Residential construction at all levels continues to grow and the renovation market is also strong on the back of consumers not travelling and low interest rates. Plenty of activity in infrastructure and civil works projects in most areas also. Members are reporting confirmed workloads well into the 2nd quarter of 2022 and some into 2023.

The usual mid year peak around May-July came later this year as a result of supply chain and COVID restrictions disrupting project timelines. Some Members noted a short spell of ‘consumer jitters’ with the arrival of the Delta variant. Despite this, enquiry remains strong going into 2022.

Navigating changing COVID restrictions and borders to get materials delivered and our people to and from work sites has been hugely challenging of late. Scheduling production and managing workloads remains a time consuming and demanding process. Members are preordering and holding higher than normal inventory in an attempt to mitigate this as much as possible. In general, most consumers are understanding of delays where there is good communication.

Skilled staff shortages remains one of the most challenging aspects of managing the demands on our businesses going forward.

Sadly, we had to cancel our Apprentice Awards event for the 2nd year in a row. Fingers crossed that things settle down soon so we can have our annual Ken Monk Fishing Trip in February. This is always a popular event for the Members and a great way to remember the legacy of Ken. Despite all the challenges the world has been throwing at us in the past 2 years, our Members are still feeling lucky and optimistic.

WAITAKI

The Waitaki area has been in constantly busy over the last few months with most members having full work books stretching into the new year. Despite the obvious issues that are being endured nationally and globally it would appear that the construction industries requirement for joinery has only grown both residentially and commercially in the Waitaki. There are many opportunities for pricing which is putting many estimators in a very busy position with a lot of members pushing work out into the 2022 working year and having to miss opportunities by declining tenders. With a number of Workshops working on Ministry of Education contracts and Ministry of Health contracts the requirements regarding vaccinations have had several members discussing how best to manage their staff around this work moving forward, several main contractors have sent out information to this affect and will require confirmation that the staff we send to site comply with this mandatory requirement.

Finding good staff is still an issue with experienced tradesman and installers extremely difficult to find many members are working hard to source suitably motivated people to fill apprenticeship roles in their factories.

Material and Supply chain issues are very much becoming a cause for serious concern with subcontractors shutting down supply earlier than usual and

suppliers constantly sending out increased pricing notifications, it’s been interesting to hear from some main contractors that they have been told that their timber framing for future contracts will not be available until June 2022 due to a lack of timber available for pre nail framing companies. Potentially having a negative flow on effect of pushing programmed joinery supply out further than anticipated or planned.

Pricing for many contracts need reviewing frequently as price increases for products can change monthly requiring deposits in advance or materials held off site agreements, to secure products early enough and at the price used at tender time.

Quote validity periods are constantly being reviewed, all of the members indicate that clients are generally paying on time with few outstanding debts held, however many members are fielding calls from potential clients who are asking for joinery to be priced and supplied this year, time frames that are un-achievable.

In conclusion the Waitaki area seems to be coping well with the end of the year looming up very fast, once again most members are looking forward to mid 2022 for new work with a number looking out further than that .

As 2021 comes to a close, many will be happy to see the end of what can only be described as a turbulent year, including those in the kitchen design and manufacturing industry that have been working at an extreme pace while balancing supply and demand issues and Covid restrictions.

For the NKBA, 2021 has seen a significant change with the forming of Designers of NKBA. This is a merger of the Certified Designers Society Designer Members and NKBA Designers. This merger will provide greater opportunities, resource, promotion and development for all of our designers and it promises a bright, inclusive, and sustainable future for our proud membership.

As a result of the merger, we introduced a new model for our Continued Professional Development and also a tiered system for all Designers of NKBA. This will ensure better transparency for all designers and the general public. We hope these changes will encourage a greater level of professionalism in the industry. 2021 was a record year for NKBA. We had a record attendance at our National Conference and Awards with a record number of first-time attendees. Students registering for our National Diploma in Kitchen and Bathroom Design was also at a record high. In my mind, all these records suggest one thing –NKBA members are committed to our industry and see huge benefits from engaging with our organisation. We see this as just the beginning and we look forward to even greater growth in 2022.

This year we were delighted to welcome Caitlin Adams to the NKBA Head Office team. Caitlin is our new Education and Membership Administrator and is responsible for processing

new membership applications and assisting with our education programme. She has already become a valued part of our team. I am also pleased to announce that Rachael Kwok is moving to a position as Operations Manager, to further assist Suzie Rees in her role as Executive Officer.

I want to finish this 2021 wrap up with some reasons I believe NKBA is of value to our designers and manufacturers that work in joinery businesses. This is a very important and valued group to NKBA and we are always looking at ways to strengthen these relationships.

1. NKBA provides education opportunities that will help further develop design skills. If you, or your team are looking to develop a greater knowledge of design, NKBA provides regular courses, webinars and resources to upskill in this area. We also offer our National Diploma in Kitchen Design – which is recommended for all aspiring and experienced professional designers. Don’t forget there are currently “No Fees” for learners or employers with the Government covering the cost of all apprenticeships for new and existing apprentices via BCITO.

2. We offer networking opportunities for manufacturers, as well as designers. Our strong base of manufacturer members is on the rise and engagement levels are high. Networking is important for professional growth and encourages greater wellbeing.

3. Our NKBA Excellence in Design Awards programme includes a Manufacturing Craftmanship Award, and acknowledgment for the manufacturer of the Supreme Award-winning projects (providing the manufacturer is a NKBA member). This offers an opportunity to celebrate your highest standard of workmanship.

4. We are here to support all members and are open to exploring new opportunities, courses and resources to improve our membership offering for everyone.
