Stay Well!

Rita Goldberg Editor in Chief

n our idyllic part of the world, seasonal transitions are barely noticeable. Yes, we spend Labor Day on the beach followed by the traditional barbecue, but the next day the sun burns brightly and the ocean invites. We still have a whole season of dining alfresco and donning sandals. One change we do notice, is the thinning of crowds as tourist season comes to end. Now is when locals get to truly enjoy our

coastal paradise. If you are planning to hit the beach more frequently, check out this issue’s fashion spread filled with the stylish swimwear that will make you want to laze along the sparkling Pacific and soak up the sun for a while longer. If you really want to extend summer fun, consider checking into one of the many outstanding resorts along the Southern California coast. We’ve featured a couple of our favorites in this issue. Now is a great time to stay at The Monarch Beach Resort, with guest privileges to the newly redesigned Monarch Bay Beach Club. Contributing writer Denise Molnar tells all about the joy of an easy getaway at this local gem. Or head down to Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa with convenient access to the seaside village of La Jolla, with its array of delicious dining options and charming artisanal shops. Once you check in at either of these resorts, you may forget all about the beach or nearby landmarks since the relaxing pool scene and luxurious spa at these properties will make any desire to leave the premises unlikely. No matter the season, one thing’s for sure

- in our neck of the woods we have a lot of “feel-good” options available to us. If you are ready to embark on the ultimate feel good journey, look for inspiration from Health and Prosperity Coach Marcela Owen. Marcela’s success model entails living a healthy lifestyle - physically, emotionally and financially. Her guidance will propel you on the trajectory to personal and professional success. Need a little “feel-good” time at home? Design Columnist Julie Laughton shares great tips on how to create the zen environment where you can practice yoga, meditation and self-reflection for optimal at-home living. For those who want to take better health to the next level, the Emerging Trends column tells you how. Read about writer Beth Fhaner’s best finds in the growing arena of modern wellness. Life is meant to be well lived. That is easy here in our coastal paradise. So get out, enjoy and most importantly, be well!

Passion, Dedication, Love THE BEDROCK OF LAGUNA BEACH’S PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS

retail clerk, a retired teacher, a lawyer, a young student on summer break, these are just a few of the statuses of the 300+ dedicated volunteers that make up the Pageant cast and stage crew at the legendary Pageant of the Masters living art experience held annually in Laguna Beach. As part of the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts which began in 1932, showcasing art as “living pictures” was incorporated into the Festival’s second year and was then titled “Spirit of the Masters Pageant”. This “living pictures” art was so captivating that throughout the last near nine decades leading artists, narrators, makeup artists, composers and designers have grown the now “Pageant of the Masters” into one of the world’s most masterful recurring living art productions. In fact, as far as one can tell, Pageant of the Masters is the world’s only true full-scale living art production using real people to recreate historical art pieces on an outdoor stage.

CULTURE

This year’s Pageant was helmed by Director Diane Challis Davy whose involvement began as a volunteer some 24 years ago. Thirty to forty classic paintings and art pieces are selected each year to be featured and set designs begin right away. Complete with a live orchestra, on-stage performers, vocalists and the show’s narrator, this year’s theme was a celebration of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo Da Vinci and included a traveler theme titled, The Time Machine. Works included Da Vinci’s marble statue, “Luigi Pampaloni” circa 1834, artist Frederick Arthur Bridgman’s oil on canvas “Procession of the Bull Apis” circa 1879, John Falter’s “Evening Picnic” dated 1949, Twentieth Century Fox’ 1951 film poster “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and The Saturday Evening Post cover May 20, 1950 “Working on the Jalopy” by Stevan Dohanos where one cast member wiggles his foot on stage reminding audiences that these are real, live people within the set. When asked of any challenges over the years, Elaine shares that being outdoors the heat and humidity can impact costumes and makeup. One year, she recollects, the second act was stopped due to rain. Yet overall, the customary beautiful southern California weather has been favorable to the Pageant. One point to note is that the Pageant begins after dark when lighting and special effects bring the set designs and costumed cast to vibrant life. So vibrant, one can hardly tell the difference between the living art and the original work.

The Pageant of the Masters has been featured around the globe drawing international crowds and locals alike including acclaimed photographer Matthew Ralston who brings his Pageant cast member photo gallery, “Art People” to Laguna Beach in June 2020. The exhibit is currently in Los Angeles and was recently featured in Los Angeles magazine. While attending The Pageant of the Masters as a spectator is certainly worthwhile, for a truly unique experience consider volunteering behind-the-scenes or on-stage and be part of the team that brings art to life.

SPOTLIGHT

Dialogue With Diana Shabtai FOUNDER: ART THERAPY OC

S

ince early childhood, Newport native Diana Shabtai recognized the value of creating art for mindful, therapeutic selfcare. Creating art as a healthy outlet/ coping mechanism was central to Diana’s life and she knew that by opening up a well facilitated art studio, she could bring joy and healing to others.

What was your inspiration to create Art Therapy OC? So many people love creating art. The process is therapeutic and healing as well as a great way to promote self care. With my advanced education (a Doctorate Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy) and credentials as a Board Certified Clinical Art Therapist, I can guide clients to meaningful revelations and foster positive, healthy expression of feelings. When did you open? I opened the studio seven years ago but have been using art as a wellness tool for over 17 years. I have extensive experience working with children, adults and various at-risk populations in need of empowerment, self-confidence, and personal growth. It is exciting for me to see the results of an immersive art experience. My clients feel so much better after they participate in a meaningful, professionally facilitated art project. Why did you choose your current location? This awesome, enchanting, colorful, comfortable, fun, inspirational Art Studio covered in artwork, that includes my vibrant hand-painted murals, is on the Peninsula, in the heart of Newport Beach, where I grew up and spent my whole life enjoying the treasures this beautiful city has to offer. Who are the clients you created the business model for? I truly love working with youth of all ages, as well as families. Because of my therapy background, I also have extensive experience working at various retirement homes and facilities for adults dealing with dementia/alzheimer’s as well as wellness centers for youths and young

30

adults in rehabilitation. I volunteer at hospitals, running art therapy groups for patients and survivors of cancer. Art is beneficial and healing for everyone, from preschoolers, a critical age for the development of esteem and sense of self, to the elderly who benefit mentally and emotionally from the process. How many artworks have been created in your studio? Since opening, thousands of artworks have been created in my studio. I offer a wide array of projects, from peaceful succulent nature art wreaths to mindful Mandalas and mosaics to crafty centering collages. I have worked with Girl Scouts, earning badges, teens dealing with life stressors, women’s groups at corporate wellness events and more. I have even mentored local psychologists seeking to incorporate art

into their practice. What is your goal for your clients? My goal is to guide others in creating their very own therapeutic art and tailoring it to the specific needs of the individual, so they can utilize it in their daily lives for better self-care, mindfulness, self-love, healing, better mental health, and as a coping mechanism for healthy, enjoyable expression. I frequently facilitate creative wellness workshops and we host many parties here for those wanting to experience a fun, creative way to celebrate any occasion. I am a very strong advocate of bringing more awareness to the benefits of therapeutic arts. I love helping others by inspiring their artistic inclinations. Share some examples that underscore your vision for the client experience. My favorite success story involves a young boy who was very shy and had social anxiety. His parents reserved the studio for his birthday party with 25 guests in attendance. I selected him to facilitate the art project and lead his fellow artists. In this role, I watched his self-confidence bloom and his anxiety completely abate as he became immersed in facilitating the art project in this leadership capacity. I also feel gratified when working with dementia and alzheimers patients and have seen the incredible results of art that aids in mood elevation, social engagement and even memory recall. Do you have a personal favorite art project? I love to paint with acrylics and make multimedia crafty creations. I paint daily, just as I encourage others to do artistic expression in some form daily as their therapy.

PROFILE

A

ctor Casper Van Dien may be a man who lives in the present and plans for the future, but most of his biggest fans are still stuck in the past. In 1997, to be exact. “No matter where I go, somebody comes up to me and says something about ‘Starship Troopers.’ Twenty years later and almost every day – at least five times a week – somebody will come up to me and yell a quote at me, wherever I am,” Van Dien says with a laugh. “They’re like, ‘What are you doing here, Rico?’ and I’m like buying toilet paper!” Being known for that cult classic is just fine with Van Dien, for despite having well over 100 film and television credits to his name, the 50-year-old thespian loves to work, be it starring as Tarzan in “Tarzan and the Lost City” back in 1998 or more recently on TV and the web in the “Mortal Kombat: Legacy” series. His newest movie, “Dead Water,” co-stars Judd Nelson and arrives in theaters this fall. That on-the-water thriller holds fond memories for Van Dien and his wife Jennifer Wenger, who were married just before that movie began shooting in the U.S. Virgin Islands. “We hadn’t done our honeymoon yet and we had some things happen that meant we had to postpone our honeymoon,” Van Dien recalls. “But then I got this film and it felt like it was a honeymoon for us, the whole time down there. We spent over a month and a half there, it was just a blast!” Wenger is Van Dien’s third wife, an actress and stand-up comedian – and a graduate of the Groundlings – whose life has changed dramatically in the time she’s been with him. He’s got two grown children and two teenagers from his previous marriages to Carrie Mitchum and Catherine Oxenberg (as well as a stepdaughter he raised with Oxenberg), so Wenger found herself in the midst of a big family when she fell in love with Van Dien. “I went from being a stand-up comic staying out really late at comedy clubs to a stepmom waking up at six a.m. to make sure the kids get to school on time. It’s been a huge flip for me,” Wenger admits. “But I really love it. I used to do everything alone, and now since I have known Casper, I’m always part of a big crew!” The couple shares a passion for storytelling and is collaborating on projects together, including a movie script that Wenger has just completed. “Before I met him, I wrote a lot, but then I would judge it too much and put it on the shelf. But now, with Casper, every time that I would

32

get stuck, he would talk with me and tell me why my idea was great and why my script was coming on better than I realized, and he talked me out of those holes,” she reveals. “I’ve directed three films and I’ve produced quite a bit of different things, too,” Van Dien continues. “I love my wife’s writing, and I love rewriting and working on scripts, so I would love for us to be a team together.”

That’s their future plan; currently, Van Dien’s acting dance card is packed with projects coming soon to the big screen, including a return to science fiction in “Salvage Marines” (which co-stars Wenger); the modern cowboy drama “Roped,” the Western known as “The Warrant” (due out this Christmas) and “Lady Driver,” in which he takes the screen with his 22-year-old daughter Grace Van Dien. He’ll also return to

the second season of “All American” on the CW network in October, so finding time for anything else is something of a challenge. “I will tell you that this man works more than anybody, believe me,” Jennifer Wenger says with a laugh. “Hey, we go on hikes with our dogs and our kids!” Casper Van Dien protests. “But, yeah, I really love working.” n

r. Shyrlena Bogard has been practicing medicine for 10 years and recently relocated to Southern California to serve as the Medical Director. She is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and is now specializing in Sexual Health Medicine. Dr. Bogard completed her undergraduate studies at Northeastern Illinois University and went on to obtain her medical degree at The Chicago Medical School. It was during her time at Chicago Medical School that Dr. Bogard first took notice of the disparities in women’s healthcare. As a student leader, she served her classmates as both a Student Representative and eventually the Student Body vice president, but notably, she co-founded a student group focused on increasing awareness of issues in women’s health. After achieving her medical degree, Dr. Bogard continued her passion to serve women and completed a residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Eastern Virginia Medical School. There she served as a Junior District Chair for the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and visited Capital Hill to speak to the state senator supporting women’s health. During her final year of resident education, she was voted by her peers as the Administrative Chief Resident. Dr. Bogard spent the first eight years of her career as a partner in a private practice. She enjoyed caring for her patients, but soon realized there was a huge void in the sexual health needs of her patients and the education she received in her training. HOME DESIGN

Create a Zen-Like Retreat in Your Own Home BY JULIE LAUGHTON

W

e all need a space we can go to in our home to unwind, rejuvenate and meditate. Letting go of the stressors from the day is important. Many homeowners have asked me to create this retreat space for them. It’s a room inside your home or a space in your backyard where you can find some quiet and alone time. Summer is the time of the year where you can really enjoy your outdoor Zen space. The idea for the outdoor area in this photo was to have the comforts and shelter of being indoors while being outside. This patio has a roof on it that can withstand weather conditions. The massage table sits nicely under the patio cover with two infrared heaters above that are great for an early morning or evening massage. When the massage table is removed, this same area is used for morning and evening yoga and stretching. Adjacent to the massage area is an infrared

sauna, which is a healthy way to detox. The Buddha represents the magical reminder that your mind and thoughts control your body. The canyon views are like an impressionistic painting in the background. Overall, the ambiance in this patio design is one hundred percent being in touch with Mother Nature. If you choose to have your Zen space indoors, there are lots of ways to make it feel organic and peaceful. Sight, sound and tactile (what you see, hear and feel) are the most important elements to creating mood. All colors evoke emotion. Organic and jewel tones are perfect for a quiet space. Tactile are the fabrics on the furniture, floor and throw blankets and pillows. Cottons, chenille and silk are great for this type of room. If you don’t have windows in you space, you can create mood using indirect lighting. To further incorporate the Zen vibe in other rooms, continue to use organic soft paint

colors along with candles and crystals. Due to the high level of stress that the home remodel business can bring as a designer and general contractor, I am constantly cleansing and grounding. During my downtime, the mornings start by grounding myself and setting an intention for the day. This is followed by yoga and stretching to wake up the body. At night, I ground, cleanse and clear my thoughts and prepare for a restful sleep so I am ready the next day. Carving out this time to cleanse and clear yourself every day allows you to create a positive energy flow, which is crucial to living your life to the fullest. Having this space in your home gives you the ability to recharge. Your thoughts control your intentions, and your intentions and actions control the outcome of your life. So creating this space in your home to recharge and reboot every day is key to healthy living. www.julielaughton.com n

Monarch Beach Resort Beckons Locals BY DENISE MOLNAR

W

ho doesn’t like taking an extended vacation, but with work, school, social obligations and kids, that’s not always an option. What if I were to tell you that if you could carve out only one night you could plan a get-a-way with family, friends or your bae that will leave you feeling like you’ve had a proper reset! Enter, The Monarch Beach Resort. This beautifully redesigned and rebranded retreat is the perfect locale to relax and refresh. The property is the embodiment of the easy Southern California lifestyle. Sitting just beyond the Pacific Ocean, nestled in the charming, coastal city of Dana Point, there is simply something for everyone.

42

JOLI MAGAZINE | ISSUE 3, 2019

LOCAL GETAWAY The crown jewel of the property is the newly opened Monarch Bay Beach Club. Available only to hotel guests and members, a day at the beach has never been easier. Jump on the tram and in minutes you arrive at a private oasis. No need to haul chairs, umbrellas, towels or snacks. The Club provides everything and the restaurant and bar will satisfy all tastes. If it’s pure relaxation that you seek, then grab your sunscreen and spend the day at one of the resort’s two, large swimming pools. There are several options for setting up camp. The most decadent option is to splurge on one of the beautifully appointed cabanas. Really more like small living rooms, they come furnished with flat screen televisions, ceiling fans, sofas and your own cabana host. Looking for a little privacy but a cabana isn’t calling to you? Reserve one of the day beds! These comfy, cozy, round sofas have attached umbrella coverings that provide nice refuge from the sun and a bit of privacy. If you’re feeling like a social (Monarch) butterfly, then grab a lounge chair, order lunch and a cocktail and soak in the beautiful view and happy vibe. If a whole day poolside isn’t enough relaxation, then I suggest you find your way into the Miraval Spa. Upon check-in you are served a delicious Elixir, which sets the tone for your treatment even before you don your robe and slippers. Just reading the spa menu is a joy in itself. From scrubs to wraps, facials to massage or a specialized Ayurvedic experience that aims to balance the mind-body connection, the offerings will entice you to spend an hour or even a day. For those of us that can’t sit still, activities abound. The gym is well equipped and the class schedule is impressive, with yoga, Spin, TRX, Barre, HIIT, Bootcamp and more, you’ll find the perfect workout. Rather be outside? The resort boasts an award winning 18-hole championship golf course and guests have access to the Monarch Tennis Club just across the street. If you want to try something new, try the No-Fail Surf Lesson. Full disclosure, I didn’t actually try it myself, but everyone I spoke with claimed success! Got kids, but need adult time? No problem. The Kids Club has tons of fun activities for the minis. They can meet a Falcon, tie-dye a t-shirt, get a glitter tattoo, fly kites or take part in a Magical Botanical Garden Party. I stand by my promise that even one night at Monarch will leave you feeling rested and refreshed, but don’t blame me if you wind up extending your stay. n

THIS COMPLETELY UPGRADED AND RESTORED

1940’S ESTATE OVERLOOKING THE PACIFIC OFFERS ITS NEW OWNERS THE CHANCE TO OWN A PIECE OF SAN CLEMENTE HISTORY.

This resort-like residence is one of those spots you have to see in person to believe… because the pictures simply don’t do it justice. Designed by esteemed Laguna Beach architect Aubrey St. Clair in 1940—and recognized as one of San Clemente’s official historic landmarks—this alluring Hollywood Regency-style home was completely upgraded and restored over the years, while retaining its period style. The result? A perfect orchestration of a bluff-top setting offering unparalleled ocean, mountain and city views, modern amenities, and charming and spacious environs rife with exceptional touches. Think a multitude of antique chandeliers, along with a commissioned mural (“Series of Trees for Four Seasons”) designed and painted by a Disney imagineer Richard Dubuc.

THE

Crowning ACHIEVEMENT?

THE TRULY UNIQUE GROUNDS! “Over the years, we’ve worked with arborists and landscapers to care for the many mature specimen trees the property is graced with,” says one of the current owners of the home, which is listed by Tracy Weintraub of Compass for $4.395 million. “Two of our favorite touches include creating a cactus garden with views of Saddleback mountains and a garden of plantings mentioned in Shakespeare plays. We also created a garden room off the courtyard patio that is special.”

On a gated double home site of almost 1.5 acres, in one of O.C.’s most desirable beach-side communities—the home’s interiors are equally impressive. Expect 6,000 square feet of opulent living space on two levels, complete with solid oak wood flooring, crown molding, extensive built-ins, soaring beamed ceilings, dramatic bay windows, French doors and a trio of stone-clad fireplaces. Among the highlights: six bedrooms, most notably, a massive master suite with a separate seating area, and dual baths and dressing closets, as well as a professional chef ’s kitchen boasting granite countertops, a large center island with seating, custom white Shaker cabinetry, Thermador, Bosch and Sub-Zero appliances, a breakfast nook and butler’s pantry.

Yet other show-stopping attributes include a grand foyer (showcased by an old-fashioned telephone room turned powder room), formal living and dining rooms, a library, sunroom with decorative tile flooring, and main-level guest wing sporting two bedrooms and a bath. Outdoors, the massive grounds stun with attractive stone walkways, a pool and spa, patio ideal for catching the sunsets over Catalina, and lush courtyard with shade-loving plants that look like they were plucked right out of the city of New Orleans. An added bonus? This exquisite property enjoys the California Mills Tax Act, which results in highly desirable property taxes of only $6,000 per year and is offered at $4,395,000. “This is one of the most private, panoramic ocean-view estates I have ever seen,” says Weintraub. “The 1.5 acres of grounds is simply nothing less than spectacular, while the interior of the home radiates joyfulness via the ample sunlight streaming through the many glass windows and delightfully dancing in a variety of shades on the walls.”

SPECIAL ADVERTISMENT

WINSTON’S CROWN JEWELERS A FIRST-CLASS EXPERIENCE

W

hile it takes over a billion years for a single diamond to form, it only takes diamond guru Glenn Verdult moments to identify a diamond so special that he will confidently write a check on the spot. Verdult, owner of Winston’s Crown Jewelers, is known as the go-to guy for one-of-a-kind jewels. His client base ranges from the international elite to ingrained locals seeking the perfect stone at the best value. Verdult has been brokering diamonds for nearly four decades. He knows diamonds and has unsurpassed product array on display in his elegant Newport based showroom and his flagship Costa Mesa store.

W

inston’s Crown Jewelers houses one of the largest diamond collections in Orange County. The available stones range in size, offering something for everyone. Clients who are ready to buy don’t leave empty handed. “Most jewelers don’t have the ability to carry expensive or unique inventory,” explains Verdult. “When a request for a large or particular stone arises, other jewelers have to reach out to their suppliers and may only gain access to one or two choices. The process could take a week or longer. At Winston’s, clients find the perfect stone, usually larger than they anticipated for their budget.“Many of my clients can afford to shop anywhere. I am able to offer the diamond they want, in

some cases over 20 carats - at an exceptional price. No one likes being overcharged ... whether they can afford it or not. Most successful people didn’t amass their wealth by spending an extra $1 million on a red or blue box.”

V

erdult knows what his clients want. When a rare pink diamond or other highly coveted stone comes into his possession, Verdult will notify a selection of his clientele. “When a special opportunity presents itself, I contact a handful of my long-standing clients, and end up making someone very happy.”

B

uyers don’t have to be ready to spend big bucks to be treated to a first class experience. In fact, first time buyers are especially comfortable at Winston’s. “Buying a diamond or any significant piece of jewelry should always feel special. Whether I am working with a newly engaged couple with a limited budget or a client with a seven figure price point, I want to make sure the experience is as special and rare as the precious gift being purchased.” Winston’s Crown Jewelers, 100 West Coast Highway, Suite 101, Newport Beach, 949.642. 5000, www.winstonscrownjewelers.com Winston’s Jewelers, 1775 Newport Blvd. Suite B, Costa Mesa, 949.645.9000, www.winstonscrownjewelers.com

Concierge Podiatry & Spa Stands for Beautiful Healthy Feet PRESENTING THE CPS “OC FIVE-POINT PED-I-CURE”™ BY RITA GOLDBERG

S

tep aside typical med spa - the new PedSpa™ has arrived in Newport Beach. For those wanting beautiful, healthy feet, Concierge Podiatry & Spa - Newport Beach is the sole “go-to” place in town! The brainchild of podiatrist and highly credentialed foot specialist Dr. Ivar Roth, Concierge Podiatry & Spa is the answer to those who have ever felt self conscious about their feet and want beautiful and healthy results. The well appointed elegant environment where Dr. Roth receives patients feels more like a first class spa than your standard doctor’s office. The oversized entry lounge, flooded with natural sunlight and open vistas, features welcoming plush spa chairs where medically enhanced pedicures are offered to clients seeking the very best in foot care! Clients can indeed expect a superior level of service as they sit back and allow the professional staff to attend to their feet. A luxurious mineral rich soothing foot bath, exfoliating scrub and hydrating massage are part of the posh treatment that features the use of celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann’s full line of mani/pedi lotions, products and superior quality nail lacquer. An alternative nail lacquer, Dazzle Dry, which is all vegan, is also available and it dries rock hard in five minutes with the performance of a gel but without the harmful effects. Medical grade standards of hygiene and sterilization are applied to all tools and equipment used. The hallmark of the spa is The CPS OC Five-Point Ped-i-cure™ foot examination personally conducted by Founding Podiatrist Dr. Roth. Nail deficiencies, skin health, circulation, fungus identifiers, and foot alignment are expertly assessed before the pedicure begins. “In my 34 years of practice in Newport Beach, I have seen thousands of patients (over 50% of those who have walked into my office) afflicted with discolored or irregular toenails, resulting from fungal contraction,” begins Dr. Roth, as he outlays the only known treatment plan (which he personally invented) to once and for all – rid patients of this unsightly condition. Most doctors convince patients that there is nothing to be done about nail fungus. Dr. Roth knows better and, to the benefit of thousands of his patients, has been able to cosmetically correct the condition (usually in three to

HEALTH & BEAUTY six months). If you are wondering how the treatment works, Dr. Roth happily walks patients through each step of his effective treatment for fungal infections that leave the majority of doctors stumped. The proprietary program starts with a unique laser treatment and the use of specialty tools to redefine the nail. This is followed by a protocol of in-house compounded, specially developed topical solutions. Finally, a unique blend of vitamins, supplements and oral medicines is prescribed to promote optimal regrowth of healthy nails. The process works and the end result enables patients to finally put their best and beautiful foot forward! “I want patients everywhere to have the opportunity for this kind of foot health,” says Dr. Roth, who is looking to use the Newport Beach flagship PedSpa™ as a model for the launch of future Concierge Podiatry & Spa locations. Dr. Roth cares about foot health. His genuine passion for this profession is further evidenced by his proprietary custom line of high-heeled orthotics he specifically developed to meet the needs of his female patients. If at this point you are thinking that Dr. Roth is a genius inventor, worthy of a coveted deal with Shark Tank, you are right. However, he is much more. His medical training has gifted him with surgical skills that are rarely evident in the podiatric profession. He trained in foot and ankle surgery at Mt. Sinai Hospital of Chicago with world-renowned podiatrist Dr. Lowell Scott Weil Sr. His foot and ankle care skills are so advanced that he even saved a patient from amputation with a sophisticated and delicate surgical procedure. It is not unusual for patients who have endured multiple unsuccessful surgeries to finally be healed at the hands of Dr. Roth. He has the distinction of being the Founding Chairman of Podiatric Surgery at Hoag Hospital of Newport Beach and was the first podiatrist awarded full orthopedic privileges for foot and ankle surgery at Hoag Hospital. With such impressive credentials, it’s not surprising that Dr. Roth has created a foot care model - The CPS OC Five-Point Ped-i-cure™ foot examination available at Concierge Podiatry & Spa of Newport Beach - that sets a new standard of care, offering a long awaited option for ensuring beautiful, healthy feet.

ith the rise of fast fashion, where clothing is mass produced at a pace that’s faster than what consumers can buy, some people are slowly turning to slow fashion and indie designers for clothing that not only looks good but also does good. Shop Embrace is a new upcycling fashion brand that has made waves in Orange County with reimagined ‘hand-me-down’ bags and handmade fringed denim jackets. Shop Embrace takes what was once “old” and renews fashion by adding feathers and/or fringes on items such as jackets, purses, and shoes to cultivate a new style. This concept of upcycling isn’t new, but Shop Embrace designs are special because everyday items are recreated with a little more funk and fun. Debbie Corley, the founder and designer of Shop Embrace started the company because she saw her friends throwing away clothes that they only wore once because it was “last season.” She had an idea to renew fashion that was once “old” by creating a new style that would transform them into a new type of garment. Some may say her designs are a wild for everyday wear, but Shop Embrace encourages wearing clothing that makes you feel comfortable and free regardless of your age, gender, or background. “I’ve always been told that a 60 year old, shouldn’t and couldn’t wear clothes like this,” Explains Corley. “Why not? We can be 60 and be fashionable and these pieces always spark great conversation!” Early July, Shop Embrace captured the audience at the Joli Magazine fashion show in San Juan Capistrano. The runway not only consisted of their upcycled feather purses, but we got a first peek at Corley’s new line of fringe denim jackets. “It was a dream come true to have a runway show dedicated to Shop Embrace,” Corley exclaimed. “We wanted a fashion show that not only showcased the clothing, but we wanted to showcase the clothing on all different sizes of woman because that’s who is going to be wearing the clothing. Real women aren’t always size 0 and we wanted our runway to represent real woman.” In partnership with Mellisa Pellone’s Signature Collection and Studio Salty, Shop Embrace put on a fashion show that not only consisted of sizes 0-8 but plus size models. “We are really proud to put on a show that’s unconventional. We’ve gotten tons of compliments and appreciation that we didn’t stick to

the norm,” Crystal Reed, the founder of Studio Salty and creative director of the runway show explained. Shop Embrace is just getting off the ground, but has already walked in Orange County Fashion Week, has appeared in local blogger’s Instagrams, and will be breaking in a San Clemente’s boutique soon. Corley is currently working on Fall collection’s bags and jackets that her friends and family has donated to her. Additionally, she’s taking orders for custom garments for fringe jackets. Starting in August, Shop Embrace will donate a part of her proceeds to Laura’s House to benefit the victims of domestic violence in Orange County. “I always wanted to give back to the community that gave me a voice. I’m so happy that I was able to pursue my dream, even at the age of 60. Now, it’s my turn to give back and with every purchase, you will too.”

Marcela’s multi-pronged approach spans the breadth of health, personal fulfillment and fiscal soundness, leaving clients well positioned to achieve their significant life goals. After 27 successful years in the corporate world, Marcela realized she had a unique talent for steering others on the path to empowerment. In her corporate capacity, she typically coached and mentored associates and recognized her passion for that role. Marcela decided to get formally trained and obtained her Certification as well as a Mastery in Transformational Coaching, readying herself to embark on her own personal goal of becoming a Health and Prosperity Coach. “People tend to experience blocks in their ways and hemmed in by self-imposed limitations. But we have the option to rewrite our stories and change our trajectory,” shares Marcela, whose coaching technique effectively elevates clients to a new level. When Marcela first meets with a client, she starts with a discovery session that helps identify rooted behaviors and personal ideologies that may serve as impediments to growth. Even small behavioral changes can start a client’s transition, according to Marcela, who firmly believes that everything matters. The way we define early life experiences, the physical environment we place ourselves in, the foods we eat, the friends we choose, the amount of time we take for ourselves, even the way we spend money, are just some of the factors that impact personal wellness. We all carry the childhood events that shaped us into our adult lives, according to Marcela who finds that 90% of her clients circle back to early experiences when identifying self doubt. “I work with clients to revisit and rede-

Turn Back the Clock the Natural Way BY BRENDA VAN LOGGEM, MSN, RNP

Brenda van Loggem, RNP, MSN, of Newport Beach-based Pro Age Medical & Aesthetics, is an expert at helping her clients turn back the clock to restore the youthful feeling that tends to wane as we age. Ivy league educated with post-grad medical training and certification in Anti-Aging Medicine, Brenda has spent over 10 years dedicated to restoring youthfulness and wellness through her custom designed Bio Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) protocol. After she gets her clients to feel their best, she also helps them to look their best with her array of aesthetic enhancement services and products.

e are only as young as we feel. Getting back to your optimal self should not entail guess work or feel like a trial and error process. During the initial consultation, I perform a complete and thorough review of your comprehensive lab results and evaluate your symptoms. Together we come up with a plan related to your goals and practicality and your lifestyle. There are many treatment options available at our office. When your hormones are not right, you are not right. Hormonal imbalances can occur at any age, and may manifest in sleeplessness, weight gain, forgetfulness, muscle and bone density loss, reduced energy, diminished sex drive and much more. Conditions such as Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, Depression, Alzheimer’s and Osteoporosis are related to hormones. But the good news is that hormone levels are measurable with the right testing. So if your body has decreased or stopped producing what it needs, optimal levels can be attained with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. But not all hormone replacement therapies are the same. I work exclusively with Bio Identical hormones which come directly from nature and are primarily plant-based rather than synthetically formulated by the big pharmaceutical companies, thus undesired side effects are far less likely. Nature supplies what we need, so why not take advantage of Earth’s wonderful offerings? While women openly talk about the onset of menopause and its symptoms, men, who also experience a decline in the production of important hormones, such as testosterone, don’t always seek information about their hormonally based symptoms. When they do, it is usually from their general practitioner who may have limited experi-

ence with anti-aging medical advancements. Low testosterone levels in men impacts more than their sex drive. Inability to sleep through the night, weakened muscle tone, weight gain, memory loss, tiredness and even depression are among the common effects of hormonal imbalances in men. We have the tools and know-how to fix the imbalance in both men and women and it’s easier and more affordable than most people think. After my patients start feeling as great as they did in their 20’s, they want to match how they feel outwardly. To complement my medically based anti-aging treatment, Pro Age also offers a complete menu of aesthetic enhancements to restore that youthful appearance. No matter your age, we all deserve to feel and look our best.

At Pro Age Medical & Aesthetics, we have the expertise to help you become the most youthful version of yourself.

his creative powerhouse home builder is comfortable coloring outside the lines. That may explain why clients like Tony Baxter, renowned Disney imagineer, look to Laughton to bring one-of-a-kind design visions to fruition. “That is one of my favorite remodel projects,” shares Laughton as she relays the start to finish process sparked by Disney’s former senior vice president of creative development. “Tony was watching Mary Poppins and decided he wanted to recreate a setting on his outdoor property.” Ten authentic style gas lamps and hidden blue lensed tree lights were installed to create the dramatic moon lit illumination effect that borrows from the famed film’s most memorable scene, according to Laughton. Discriminating creatives are not the only ones seeking out Laughton’s services. Her range of satisfied clients runs the gamut and includes celebrities, professional athletes, business tycoons, White House affiliates, and restaurateurs. Currently, she has 15 projects in the works, ranging from simple room additions to dramatic estates. Although Laughton creates with creativity, her sterling reputation in the home design arena is founded on reliability. Clients get what they want and the process is smooth and worry free thanks to her oft used motto: “It all starts with a good plan!” That plan is initially presented in digital 3D color renderings so clients can take a virtual tour of their property to be. The state-of-the-art program used by Julie enables clients to get an accurate visual of the final outcome. That means minimal or no changes, which ensures a timely build process. The company’s infrastructure, featuring 32 full time employees, and long standing relationships with additional loyal craftsmen further ensures a smooth remodel. “My clients don’t have to worry about down time that results from waiting around for subcontractors to show up. The jobs are done primarily by highly trusted, in-house staff. That is especially important with large scale, specialty custom build projects.” One of Laughton Design Build’s exciting current projects include a 6,000 square foot estate. “I am proud of the outdoor living area created for this home,” shares Julie. “It features a 600 square foot resort style cabana and all the desired amenities including a built-in kitchen with barbecue, fireplace, multiple 80” flat screen TVs, and dramatic 25 foot disappearing doors to create a seamless indoor/outdoor transition.” Overseeing large scale projects is what Julie

does best. She is meticulous when it comes to every detail and has her clients’ backs to guarantee they get a finished outcome that typically exceeds their expectations. “You have to be strong and diligent to make it in this industry,” shares Julie, who comes from

a long line of very strong women who successfully ran farms in Iowa, where Julie grew up. “My paternal great grama was ahead of her time as a single woman who oversaw her land, crops and livestock, which is still thriving today,” tells Julie. “My maternal grandmother was also very strong and managed a 600-acre farm, while single handedly raising 12 children.” With role models like that, it’s no wonder that Julie has a strong work ethic. She starts her days at 4 am but before tackling her daily to-do list, she takes time to meditate and do yoga. “Self-care is vital to keep me balanced,” says Julie, who incorporates exercise, detoxification rituals and down time into each day. “Music is also important to me,” she adds, noting that her playlist features all her favorite ‘70’s classics. Most important to Julie is the private time she enjoys in her Laguna Beach home with her husband of seven years. “I love what I do, and that is apparent in the homes I create. But I also make sure to have a balanced lifestyle that keeps me grounded and revived so I can keep doing what I enjoy most - which is creating the homes of my clients’ dreams.”

When she heard about a party rental business available for sale, she was intrigued. “After being laid off, I decided I wanted to be in control of my own destiny and was actually looking to acquire an established business,” says the Southern California native. “The opportunity to purchase Chic Party Rentals presented and I thought it would be a perfect fit for me. After all, who doesn’t love parties? It was an industry that I was unfamiliar with so buying the company was a little scary but also very exciting,” she shares. It didn’t take Nikki long to become an expert on all matters pertaining to the art of party rentals. She spent considerable time with the previous owners to learn the ins and outs of the business. She even tracked down the founders of the business, who were owners before, to acquire a keener understanding of what it would take to be successful. Monarch Bay Beach Club DISHES UP DELICIOUS FRESH FARE BY DENISE MOLNAR

S

outh Orange County has been a coastal playground to generations upon generations. The climate is inviting year-round and the atmosphere is at once laid back and upscale. This combination is a sweet spot for the culinary world. Wonderful food at a scenic spot in a relaxed atmosphere is a draw for any diner. With that in mind, let me introduce the newly re-opened and reimagined Monarch Bay Beach Club and restaurant, the waterfront extension of the lovely Monarch Beach Resort. Originally opened in 1962 for homeowners in the surrounding community, this beachfront property has lured locals and travelers to its shoreline for decades. Back in the day there was a food shack where you could get a snack, a cold drink and probably some ice cream. Fast-forward to present and that shack is now a beautiful, lively, airy bar area and restaurant that feels like a friend’s comfortably elegant beach home. Resort guests and club members exclusively have access to the restaurant and club. It’s never been easier, or more delicious to enjoy a day at the beach. No need to pack chairs, towels, snacks or toys. Everything is there. The shuttle bus from the hotel drops you at the foot of the Pacific Ocean where friendly staff will help you set up for the day. Once you’ve settled in you can paddleboard, surf or swim and then turn your attention to what’s really important…FOOD. Executive Chef Hansen Lee has curated the perfect menu with palate pleasers for adults and children alike. The location offers him prime access to purveyors of locally grown fruits, vegetables and meats and the opportunity to work closely with local fishermen to procure the catch-of-the-day. The resort has the stamp of approval from the Surfrider Association as being ocean friendly, so you are correct in assuming that the seafood is tasty. The menu is the same for lunch and dinner and a lot of items can be eaten family style. Start big with the Double Overhead Seafood Tower for 2 or 4 with Tiger Shrimp, King Crab Legs, Oysters and Snapper Ceviche. The basics are always good too. if you’re feeling guilty for not eating fish, top it off with a piece of lobster or shrimp. Problem solved (don’t forget the fries)! If you’re looking for something lighter try the Tuna Tartare and pair it with the White Grape Gazpacho. The Young Arugula Salad can be eaten as-is or with chicken, shrimp or lobster for a protein boost. I loved the Lobster Clam Bake that serves two (or more). It comes in a copper pot that is filled with Lobster, Jumbo Shrimp, Clams, Mussels, Grilled Chorizo, Potatoes and Sweet Corn. Vegetarians will love the Green Curry Cauliflower

Steak and the whole table will devour the Green Garlic Whipped Potatoes. The dessert menu is all things beach and summer. Tropical Popsicles, Snickerdoodle Ice Cream Sandwiches or a twist on the classic S’more with Dark Chocolate Cremeux sitting on drizzled marshmallow and topped with Peanut Butter Pretzel Crumble. Round it off with a Ukulele lesson, specialty cocktail, a glass of wine (all from California wineries) or your favorite beverage and you have the perfect setting in which to dine and enjoy. n

more negative in Europe and Japan. While our own personal belief is the recession talk may be overdone, at some point, even with the U.S. economy in good shape, should the economic slowdown in Europe and China continue, the U.S. will be affected. This idealogy will play a role in the Fed’s September meeting. Odds favor another rate cut as the U.S. looks to keep it’s interest rates in line with the rest of the developed world. Mortgage activity has picked up big-time as rates have returned to near historical lows. While the high priced coastal housing market remains sluggish, we are optimistic the current low rate environment will motivate on the fence buyers. The drop in monthly payments

from refinance transactions will also benefit the economy as more money will be available to purchase other goods and services. Given our belief about the resiliency of the U.S. economy, and given where interest rates are at the moment, it is hard to argue against locking-in purchase and refinance mortgages. However, as evidenced by central bank policy in Europe and Japan, rates can go lower or even negative in today’s world.

A Modern Approach to

Healthcare BY BETH FHANER

With a focus on preventative care, as well as nutrition and lifestyle programs, modern health care institutions are using alternative approaches to maintain wellness. As primary health care facilities stress preventative care and wellness, they’re utilizing complementary and alternative medicine to reinvent the health care model. Here, we take a look at three companies and/or institutions—all with a presence in Southern California—that are revolutionizing the health care industry and leading the way in patient-centered medical care. Parsley Health Parsley Health, a high-tech modern medical practice that combines cutting-edge diagnostic testing with the latest in nutrition and lifestyle interventions, has centers located in NYC, Los Angeles and San Francisco. While Parsley’s LA office in Playa Vista is already open, they are gearing up for the launch of the LA flagship center in West Hollywood this fall. By utilizing an outcomes-driven approach and pairing doctors and patients for the long haul, Parsley emphasizes primary care to focus on the root cause of the disease—a model that has been proven to reverse and cure chronic conditions, improving health while reducing lifetime health care costs.

We also focus on prevention and overall health optimization.” Tolentino admits that a big part of what makes Parsley so effective is that they’re inter-

Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute Established in 2011, the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, part of UCI Health, offers an innovative, holistic approach to health care with an emphasis on prevention and balance. The institute’s team of health care providers integrates the best of conventional Western medicine with the most effective alternative therapies. Each patient receives a personalized, long-term health plan that takes into account one’s lifestyle and personal and family medical histories, and strives to improve and ensure one’s physical, emotional and spiritual health. A patient’s plan may incorporate strategies including medical treatment, nutrition, exercise, acupuncture, mind-body techniques and massage. The institute also ensures that patients have the resources and tools to incorporate these elements into their daily lives. Integrative therapies can provide benefits for everyone, whether a patient is coping with a chronic condition, a major medical event or just wishes to improve their overall well-being. Integrative medicine can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression, diabetes, inflammation, hypertension, infertility, menopause, obesity, allergies, fatigue, insomnia, stress and anxiety, stroke and more. Treatments may include acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic therapies, massage therapy, meditation, mindfulness, nutritional counseling, preventive cardiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, tai chi, vitamin-infusion therapy and yoga, among others. “Our approach to health is whole person care, which means that we address mind, body and spirit,” says executive director, Shaista Malik, MD, PhD, MPH. “We start with engaging patients as partners in their journey to health and wellness by spending time to find out what matters most to them. We couple this with advanced diagnostic testing to help assess what may be areas which we can target to improve health. We also offer expertise in nutrition, acupuncture and mindfulness and use all forms of evidence-based therapies to provide a holistic approach to treatment.” www.sscim.uci.edu

CRISPR - A Revolutionary Gene-Editing Tool In today’s medical world, the gene-editing tool CRISPR is a hot topic. CRISPR is a powerful technology that allows scientists to target, delete and repair any mutated sequence of DNA in any genre, and it’s quickly transforming genetic research. The groundbreaking gene-editing tool has entered testing as a medical treatment for classic genetic diseases such as sickle cell, and the process can also be used for genetic experiments on genes that contribute to acquired diseases such as cancer, heart diseases and AIDS. Although CRISPR has made gene editing easy and accessible, the technology is not without risk. There are serious concerns that CRISPR will be used to create designer babies with desirable physical traits, while others worry about ongoing experiments on animals, plants and microbes, including experiments to genetically enhance crops and livestock and to alter the DNA of disease-spreading insects. The emerging field of gene therapy is promising, though, and researchers want to keep focused on the future. In addition to treating individual patients, the most important component of CRISPR technology may be centered on the discovery of new drugs for many intractable diseases. “We’re just scratching the surface in the drug-target space,” says Mark Mercola, PhD, a professor of cardiovascular medicine and a member of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. “CRISPR is a great example of how basic research can lead to something of a tremendous utility in a record amount of time.”
