JOLI MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2018
here is so much to celebrate with this Summer 2nd volume issue of Joli Magazine. We are all filled with pride over the overwhelming support and partnerships that we have formed - some new and some long standing through years of publishing success in our community. We are especially excited to have snagged Chad Gracey the drummer for “Live,” the alternative rock band from the 90’s for our cover and interview. When we learned that the band was back together and touring again, doing “The 25 years of Country Tour” along with Counting Crows, which included a stop at the newly opened Five Points Amphitheatre in Irvine, we knew we had to meet up with Chad, who resides in our very own O.C., and get all the details. Be sure to read his interview and take note of the setting of our photoshoot, RockStars of Art Fine Art Gallery right in Corona Del Mar. We found this new awesome gem of a gallery to be the perfect backdrop for the shoot. Stop by the gallery and tell Cory Marie Owner/Director that we sent you!
Our team had such a great time shooting our fashion shoot in Laguna Beach with all our fashion partners. Tony Florez our staff photographer never disappoints us! If you haven’t had a chance to visit The Laguna Art District “Summer of Color” it’s a beautiful collaboration of art, music, food and culture, some of which graces the pages of our Summer fashion shoot. Well it’s starting to feel like Fall is on the horizon. Families are already preparing for back to school shopping sprees. I really miss those days. My kids are grown and I really think back fondly about those days. It goes by way too fast. Our Joli team is back in the trenches ready to bring you more surprises and interesting places and things to enjoy in the next issue. We are working diligently on our new website and digital advertising and branding opportunities. Stand by - we will release it any day now. Until then, enjoy the Summer and I’ll see you in the Fall. Cheers!

EDITOR’S LETTER
Local Summer
Rita Goldberg Editor in Chief
I
grew up in New York where Labor Day signified the end of summer. Although originally established in the 1800’s to commemorate working class labor union members, in New York the holiday is associated with the final weekend to gather at the beach, dine al fresco and enjoy many other warm weather activities. But not here! In our hometown, Labor Day is when the tourist population begins to dwindle and we get to enjoy our coveted lifestyle even more, knowing that the idyllic weather will continue for a second local summer season, with far less crowds and less traffic. One of my favorite pastimes, enjoying the art scene in Laguna Beach, beckons now that parking becomes more available. If you haven’t seen the Summer of Color 2018 Murals, make your way to Laguna Canyon Road to enjoy this culturally enriching collection of public art. Be sure to read the back story in this issue’s Culture column before you go. Afterwards, enjoy one of the many great dining options available in Laguna. Selanne Steak Tavern, reviewed in this issue, is a great place for small bites or a hearty dinner, depending on your appetite. Local summer also presents a great opportunity to enjoy the first class amenities at our Newport Coast gem - The Resort at Pelican Hill. The award winning golf course, outdoor dining with breathtaking views, and even private cabanas flanking the noted Coliseum Pool become accessible to locals, daycation style. Read about the many ways to experience this resort, without having to be a registered guest. Our extended season also lets us enjoy added months of concerts under the stars at venues that include the Back Bay Amphitheater at the Hyatt Regency, Newport Beach and at the newly opened FivePoint Amphitheater. Check out the line up in the calendar listings. While travelers arrive from all over the world to enjoy their summer vacations in Newport Beach, we locals know that as the calendared version of summer winds down, the best season to enjoy our hometown is just beginning.

Summer of Color Makes Big Splash In Arts Minded Beach Town BY JUDIT LAUFER

T
he village of Laguna Beach, with over 100 art galleries and studios and world renowned arts festivals, has drawn art lovers from all over the world to its picturesque seven mile coastline. Now art lovers have one more reason to come to Laguna:To view its newest art exhibit labeled “Summer of Color.” This eye-catching, vibrantly hued collection of murals painted on the facade of a cluster of buildings along Laguna Canyon Road’s Arts District, is the dream project of Mark Orgill, a designer and long-time resident of Laguna Beach who, along with his wife, Dora Wexell, developed and built [seven-degrees], a venue for unique, upscale corporate and private events. Orgill and Wexell, are a couple deeply devoted and involved in the Laguna Beach art scene. Mark is president of Visit Laguna and Dora, president of First Thursdays Art Walk. You get the picture. When it comes to
creating a vision for art, they care, do and share. The buildings between 775 - 859 Laguna Canyon Road are, and will for the next five years be, canvasses for murals conceived and created by internationally recognized artists. The project was funded by local businessman Mo Honarkar, who bought [seven-degrees] last year and owns many neighboring properties, including the Art-A-Fair building. Wexell and Orgill are both still very much involved in the business;Wexell as Vice-President and General Manager, and Orgill as a consultant to Honarkar, who is committed to enhancing and expanding the cultural and creative spirit of Laguna Beach.Together, along with Honarkar’s daughter Hasty, and through Laguna Creative Ventures (LCV), which Orgill formed, this arts minded team envisions this project as an opportunity to improve the district, raise awareness and draw artists and art lovers from beyond just Laguna Beach. Torrey Cook, an artist and gallery owner and Ben Rubin, owner of Elephants and Castles fine-art printing studio, were hired to curate and commission the murals. Artists, who were simply given the theme – COLOR, had full creative license and independence, according to Wexell. The most visible mural is on the Art-A-Fair building and was painted by internationally renowned Spanish street artist, Okuda San Miguel. It has the effect of a shattered kaleidoscope, with a prism of swirling pink, yellow and red polka-dots; green, blue and purple triangles, horizontal, swirling and over-lapped cubes. It’s a two dimensional, total spectrum lollipop. Another mural of Lady Liberty, by Laguna raised Beau Stanton, a graduate of Laguna College of Art + Design (LCAD) is around the Laguna Beer Co., a tasting room in the “Hive Center.”This mural is in bold blues with orange and turquoise beams sprouting from her head with a ship and its masts as a head ornament. Altogether there are nine murals designed and painted by seven artists, both local and international who resided at [seven-degrees] while working. Wexell is excited to have the murals and would like to have more civic art. Says Wexell, “it’s not about my taste - it’s all about the art.” We are so fortunate to have Laguna Beach and it’s colorful, creative and cultural spirit in our backyard. Civic art enhances us all. It expands our horizons and fosters new connections. n

Tulum is Trending BY RITA GOLDBERG

ost in-the-know travelers have already heard that something special is going on in Tulum, Mexico’s eco-chic, jungle-beach hot spot. Long known for its ancient Mayan ruins, this preserved habitat has emerged as the new kid on the vacay block - with good reason. A stay at one of the many highly-rated, beachfront resorts offers everything you can want in a first class destination. Foodies, yogis, naturalists, beach bums and Mezcal sipping gypsetters are all welcome and will find their own slice of Nirvana in the array of pastimes available within this remote enclave.

Servers are at the ready to offer cocktails and bites delivered to your slice of paradise by the sea. For active vacationers, yoga classes and bike rentals are available on site. trips to view the ancient Mayan Ruins or enjoy the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary will also delight. Or stroll the quaint town, dotted with eateries, boutiques and the frequently touted ice cream stand. Accommodations - Where to Stay The rustically luxurious hotels are designed with organic elements and reflect the attention to nature that is the hallmark of Tulum’s jungle glamp vibe. For accommodations that offer a private haven, with a serene and spiritual element, Papaya Playa Project is a great option. Nestled within the jungle and bordered by the Mexican Caribbean coast, the property was designed with sustainability as its core guiding principle. Yoga, meditation and first class spa treatment options complete the vacationer’s zen experience. But Saturday night is party night at this otherwise quiet and remote resort.Vacationers and locals show up for the hottest fiesta in town each week and beachfront dj’s inspire all night dancing and mingling. If being right in the middle of the action is your preference, opt for Be Tulum, another outstanding hotel option. Dining - Reservations Recommended Rife with natural foliage, most of the loggia style, roofless eateries imbue a sense of dining amidst nature. For a quintessential Tulum culinary experience enjoy a meal at Hartwood. The menu changes daily and is based on the freshly procured ingredients that are sustainably sourced on any given day. The cooking is done by open fire on a hand made wood burning oven and grill. Reservations are encouraged. Gitano is another dine worthy hot spot. Hearty appetites will be well sated with the grilled ribeye, tender and flavorful. Trendy eaters will relish the slow-roasted pork belly, finished off with sweet and sour pineapple and accompanied by crispy cabbage. The cinnamon smoked sweet potato is a great table share starter or side. Friday nights are disco nights and this otherwise serene environment is transformed to the town’s gathering hub for drinking, dancing and new friend finding. Sweet tooths will want to have at least one meal at Casa Jaguar to enjoy the traditional churro dessert served with a pot of warm chocolate for dipping. Arca, Posada Margherita and Rosa Negra are also certain to satisfy.
Suitcase - What to Pack Bathing suits and yoga attire will see you through your trip during the days. For evening looks, the style is organic to pair with the local vibe. Breezy neutral linen fabrics, hemp totes and canvas footwear are fashionably correct in this town that pays homage to nature inspired attire. Bring plenty of cash, preferably pesos, as taxis and some of the best restaurants do not accept credit cards. ATM dispensers are
hard to find and not always reliable. Getting There The nearest major airport is in Cancun and from there a taxi ride will take over an hour to get you to this remote city. Negotiate the price in advance and expect to pay about $100. Once you arrive in Tulum you will quickly and easily meld into the sanctuary lifestyle that makes this town a truly magical escape. n SUMMER 2018 | JOLI MAGAZINE

NEXT GENERATION LUXURY: SKIN DEEP BEAUTY ARRIVES AT

imeless Swiss Skin Care is now on the menu at Spa Montage Laguna Beach. If you haven’t been to this oceanfront, luxurious gem of a spa recently, it’s time to book and experience the newly launched, innovative Swiss born skin care treatments founded by Jacqueline Piotaz. Of course, any treatment at this coastal retreat ensures an optimal respite but new facial therapies, featuring the bio-technology based, plant stem cell infused skin care line will ensure long lasting results for those seeking to rejuvenate and protect that youthful glow. It’s all about the ingredients, according to Piotaz, who recognized the super power of certain plants that grew in her native region in the Swiss alps. Piotaz noticed that some plants maintained their green-

ery and managed to flourish in spite of the harsh winters of the region. She identified plant-based properties that offer natural methods to reverse effects of aging and protect against harsh elements and harmful pollutants of the environment. “Through plant stem cell techniques, we are able to harness and grow the anti-aging, skin boosting active ingredients found in edelweiss, alp rose, gamay grape seed, a rare Swiss variety apple, and other nutrient rich plants without creating the carbon footprint,” explains Piotaz, whose sustainable approach to beauty has earned worldwide notoriety and partnership interests from Cannes Film Festival and Golden Globe organizers. But there is more to these therapies than just the products. It’s also about the product specific techniques used by the specially trained estheticians.
Accupressure and lymphatic applications are equally important to ensure that the regenerative and protective properties are infused beneath the skin’s surface for maximum benefits. A series of deep breathing exercises is also incorporated to promote sub-layer absorption. The effect is immediately noticeable in plumped glow appearance and smooth to the touch texture. The skin care line’s array of products are available to purchase for those wanting to continue the regimen in between appointments.

DRUMMER CHAD GRACEY STILL CANNOT QUITE BELIEVE WHAT A LONG, STRANGE TRIP HE’S HAD SINCE HE DOVE INTO THE WORLD OF ROCK MUSIC AS A TEENAGER. HE’S SLIGHTLY BEMUSED,TOO, AT THE FACT THAT THE SUMMER OF 2018 IS PROVING THAT YOU ACTUALLY CAN GO HOME AGAIN; AND BE BETTER THAN EVER IN THE PROCESS.

PROFILE
Art by Michael Godard
Gracey, the percussionist for Live, the chart-topping alternative rock band from the 1990s, is currently back with the band, banging the skins on tour through September with the three guys he grew up with in York, Pennsylvania. They’re doing the “25 Years and Counting” Tour along with Counting Crows all across America, which included a stop at the new FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine and one near their old hometown at HersheyPark Stadium. Gracey, who now makes his home in Orange County, is still a bit surprised that Live is together again, for that wasn’t the case for a number of years. “We had been touring actively since ‘92, pretty much all the time,” Gracey recalls of the band that began when he, Chad Taylor, Patrick Dahlheimer and Ed Kowalczyk were in high school.
40
JOLI MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2018
In its heyday, Live sold over 20 million albums and brought their music to the world, but by 2009, things seemed to be all over for the band. “It was sort of like a dysfunctional marriage at that point. No one was really talking to each other.Towards the end, in 2009, when we started our ‘hiatus’ or whatever you want to call it at this point, there had been a breakdown in communication between Chad, Patrick and I and the singer, Ed. Chad, Patrick and I were always close and Ed was kind of an outlier towards the end there. So the break was needed,” Gracey says candidly. “There was a lot of animosity that had built up.” The three lifelong friends went on to start a new band called The Gracious Few, which met with limited success; in the meantime, Gracey met and married his wife Diana, who “was born
and raised in Dana Point/Laguna Beach area.” That lured the handsome drummer to Southern California in 2005, after a stint living in Portland. “It’s always a girl that brings you to Orange County, right?” he jokes. The couple now has three children, an eightyear-old son and twin four-year-old daughters, so Gracey isn’t planning to literally go home again, as SoCal is definitely where his heart is these days. But he’s wise enough now at age 46 to understand that you can go back to your beginnings, if you take the time to do things right. “After Live split up, Chad, Patrick and I started a bunch of businesses back in York. Actually, we bought a building in downtown York and we renovated it and made a recording studio there. And we housed a few of our other businesses
PROFILE there, too,” Gracey explains. “Until 2017, I was back in York just about once a month for at least a week or two.We started a real-estate development company that actually owns the building and the properties around it. And we started – from the ground up – a long-haul fiber-optic company that’s called United Fiber & Data. We’re running a long-haul fiber-optic line between New York City and Ashburn,Virginia.” And then in 2017, with the personal reconciliation with Kowalczyk accomplished and Live back on track, the quartet began creating music for the current tour there, back home in their York studio, together in the same spot where it all began. They have released their first song in over a decade, “Love Lounge,” recorded there and released just as their summer tour began in May. And as Gracey tells it, joining back together as Live was a bit of a snap. “We just all decided, we’ll come back together and just put all of it in the past and just start again, from where we met together in York,” he reflects. “The first meeting was cool.We sat down in the studio and just hung out and talked, and talked about our families. I had three kids in the time that Ed was gone! We just came back together, we went and had dinner, had a couple drinks. We came back to the building and played four songs like we’d never been apart, so it was really cool.” The drummer-dad-businessman adds that certain things don’t ever change, when it comes to being in a band and doing a national road tour, no matter how many years pass. “When you’re a young kid and you’re striving to be on the road and playing your music for people. Then you get a chance to do it and it is like a dream come true,” Gracey says. “Now, we know the ins and outs of the road. You just kind of know what to expect and you gear yourself up for it and you get out and do it. But the traveling, getting on the bus and going to the next city and getting the gear set up, and sitting down and playing the show, and getting off the stage and getting on the bus and going to the next city, that’s the same.We know that towards the end of the tour we’re going to be like, ‘O.k. Let’s go the hell home. I’m sick of this!’” he laughs. Of course, Chad Gracey is the first to say that his band is better in 2018 than it was when they were young guys trying to make a mark on the world. “We’ve really gotten back into the music and we’re getting along, too,” he says with a laugh, then adds, “In a lot of ways, we’re very much still the same but with just a little more worldly experience!” n

The Ultimate Way To Create An Indoor-Outdoor Living Experience BY JULIE LAUGHTON
S
outhern California affords us the luxury of enjoying our outdoor environment year round. Indoor-outdoor living is popular because there is nothing better than being one with nature. A well designed outdoor space increases the size of your overall living space and also provides a calming and tranquil environment to enjoy. There are many tricks to making your home feel bigger by opening it up to the exterior. Not only will your living space increase, you will have more options for the many different ways to entertain. Enjoying this kind of lifestyle while having all the wonderful comforts of your home involves careful planning. The first thing I do when I plan an outdoor space is to make sure the floor is the same color and or material on the inside as it is on the outside. Keeping the floors similar automatically increases the size of the room by continuing the interior floor to the exterior. The type of doors used between the living spaces is crucial because it creates the transition from indoors to outdoors. The French doors shown in this project demonstrate an elegant, traditional, almost romantic style, especially when they are covered in sheer drapery. When the doors are open, they give the automatic invitation for the outdoors to come in.When working with door openings that are much larger, I prefer a sliding door that disappears into the walls on either side when opened to the outdoors. The other key element to an indoor-outdoor seamless transition is the ceiling. The ceiling design inside the home needs to be consistent and complementary to the theme you are creating. In this home, the theme is traditional, timeless beach cottage. The ceiling was done in a white washed paint over eight inch wide wood planks that were purposely spaced with a small gap left uncaulked to give the illusion of an old vintage wooden floor. The ceiling was raised and vaulted to the highest possible height to make the feeling indoors grand so that when you walk outdoors, the transition is barely noticeable. This home was completely transformed from its original 1950s design to a new glorious way to live at the beach by following these design steps.

Consignment Sales
is A Favorite at Winston’s Crown Jewelers
By: Rita Goldberg Glenn Verdult, owner of Winston’s Crown Jewelers, sits casually at the oversized desk in his luxurious, back store office, examining the latest treasure entrusted in his keep - a Vacheron Constantin watch, displayed in its original box and accompanied by the certification of authenticity. It will easily fetch $120,000 and make both the seller and buyer very happy. Although, Winston’s elegantly appointed Newport Beach showroom is replete with its own inventory of unique and valuable jewels, Verdult gets most excited at the opportunity to broker the rare and personal treasures of his clientele. The “Consignment” segment of the business has been a constant since the retailer’s inception and is still one of Verdult’s favorite aspects of jewelry brokering. “I recently helped a client sell a spectacular, hand-signed, circa 1940’s, diamond encrusted Cartier bracelet. It was sold in a couple of days for a six figure sum and the new owner was overjoyed to possess such a rarity,” says Verdult.

inheritances include jewels that are not a fit for the next generation. Whatever the reason, why have something of value just sitting in the vault? When an item is brought in to be sold on consignment, it will most likely sell quickly and for top dollar, and 80 percent of that sale price will go to the original owner. Winston’s Crown Jewelers’ cache of consignment offerings include statement pieces by designers such as Tiffany, Cartier, Van Cleef Arpels, as well as one-of-a-kind treasures. Verdult knows how to assess the value of jewelry. After all, he has been in the business for nearly 40 years, since he was a teenager, working after school in his uncle’s pawn shop. “People are always surprised at how much their jewelry is worth,” says Verdult. “The value of gold has tripled in the last 15 years and the prices of some precious stones have grown tenfold in that same time period.”
Verdult also knows how to maximize the value of any given item. First he will ensure that it is completely refurbished. His talented jewelry service team will expertly restore each valuable consignment piece to original showroom caliber so it looks brand new. Then members of the sales team will review the item and contact clients who would be delighted to acquire such a piece. Winston’s has a roster of unique jewelry coveting clients who have Consignment sales, for those wanting to get already made their wish list known so top dollar for their valuable items, is hardly a new concept. the process is more matchmaking than International consignment auction houses such as consignment selling. At the time, Ezra saw opportunity in the mortgage industry, specifically in the niche segment of default loans, that gave cash rich investors the opportunity to acquire loans at deep discounts. With his naturally honed business acumen, Ezra put together sweet deals while others panicked at the widespread prevalence of foreclosures. It didn’t take long for Ezra to catapult himself to success. When the housing market rebounded, Ezra decided he would be happier handing clients keys to their new homes rather than mitigating costs for those who were at risk of losing their houses. “Selling homes in Southern California presents a great opportunity,” according to Ezra. “There is a huge demand for homes in this area, especially from international clients who appreciate the stability of our economy. There are foreign investors who view purchasing properties here as a wise investment,” Ezra continues, adding, “When you consider the volatility of some foreign economies and governments, California real estate presents as a very secure placement of assets.” Although foreign investors contribute to the strong demand for local real estate, Ezra’s passion veers towards securing dream homes for

Ezra’s favorites is WHW where he facilitates motivational goal setting workshops sessions for individuals struggling to find work. His message, delivered with sincerity and a genuine understanding of what it takes to create success, resonates. “Affirmation and appreciation are important to people,” says Ezra who believes that you treat those who are struggling and in need with the same respect you would show a client in search of a multi-million dollar property. While Ezra believes in giving back, he also believes in celebrating life. His office suite is stocked with bottles of champagne ready to be popped in honor of each transaction. “After a closing, I invite clients for a celebratory toast

eal estate professional Katie Machoskie is having the busiest summer of her career. In fact, the week we spoke, she had just closed a transaction of $25 million on a gorgeous waterfront property on Harbor Island and she had five other properties in escrow. As one of Orange County’s most dedicated, ethical and straight-talking real estate professionals, Machoskie is certainly in high demand. Machoskie has ranked in the top 1000 agents in the nation and consistently ranks in the top one percent of Newport Beach agents. In addition, she has sold more than $250 million in her own neighborhood, and was named one of REAL Trends America’s Best Real Estate Agents in 2017. As one of the founding agents of Compass in Newport Beach, Machoskie has built a team of licensed real estate professionals with geographic specialties in mind. Each team member is a specialist in a specific area, and they all possess different skill sets, including an agent who is fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin. “We genuinely care about each client and work tirelessly to ensure their financial goals are met.We treat our clients as we would treat our own families,” says Machoskie. After attending UCLA, Machoskie spent several years working in the entertainment industry as a publicist. She then ventured into the nonprofit world, where she raised more than $200 million in donations during her career working for various nonprofit organization and taught classes at UCI. She spent 15 years “selling hope,” as her husband, Ed Machoskie, would frequently tell her, and Machoskie credits him with inspiring her to transition to real estate, as he often suggested that she would make a great salesperson. “I got my license, sold a house four days later and never looked back. I love it.” admits Machoskie. “I love interacting with such a wide variety of people and helping them move to the next stage in life. I love the people you meet, the challenges of each transaction, all aspects of it.”

As a Southern California native, she has extensive knowledge of Orange County communities, especially coastal OC, and her team assists clients from Marina del Rey to San Clemente. Machoskie also specializes in Professional Athlete Relocation and she divulges that she’s working with a significant athlete at the moment, although discretion prevents her from naming any names. She has contacts with several sports agents, and her professionalism and level of service earn her a great deal of repeat business from those relationships. Besides assisting professional athletes with relocation and finding a new place to call home, Machoskie also specializes in sales due to death or divorce. “I swore I’d never forget how stressful a sale and moving can be. I ask lots of questions to determine what matters most for each client,” she shares. After assessing specific needs and concerns , she then creates a personal plan to provide the client with suggested communities that will meet their needs. “Reducing my clients’ stress and making the process smooth PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY FLOREZ AND CHRIS DARNELL
and enjoyable is a top priority.” It is this personal, hands-on approach that sets Machoskie & Associates apart from other real estate teams. Machoskie is fully involved in each transaction, and she never hands off business to a junior agent. As she notes, “It’s critical to provide clients with my expertise and personal attention in each transaction.” Married to Ed for 26 years, Machoskie persuaded him to come out of retirement to head up Business Development for Machoskie & Associates. With more than 20 years of experience in business development, relationship management and raising capital, he is an invaluable asset to her team as an ambassador and corporate matchmaker, linking people with opportunities. When asked what she likes to do in her downtime when she’s not assisting clients with buying and selling homes, Machoskie laughs and says, “There’s never enough time in the day.” She enjoys spending time with her family—the Machoskies have four children. She also enjoys
dining with friends, contemporary art, the beach and loves to ski. Katie loves to write and has published two children’s books and is currently working on a humorous “how-to” manual for happy marriages. She notes, “After 26 years of marriage, I’ve learned a few things, but a sense of humor helps the most.” With a strong work ethic and a constant effort to provide the very best in service, Machoskie and her team are leading the way as a dedicated and diverse group of Orange County real estate professionals. If Machoskie’s recent, highly successful summer transactions are any indication, it seems a safe bet to presume that her schedule isn’t likely to lighten anytime soon.

Jojo Romeo Brings Positive Energy and Attitude of Gratitude to Home Selling BY GINA JONES

ven though I was told that I’d love JoJo Romeo, Orange County’s preeminent luxury property realtor, I had my doubts. In the back of my head, I was thinking, “Here we go again, yet another interview with a self-absorbed, Newport Beach agent...This one was a reality TV star to boot!” I could already feel myself yawning. So, I order a triple shot grande sugar-free vanilla breve, to get my energy up for the riveting conversation I was about to have, and reviewed some notes while I waited for her at Starbucks... Right on time, she pulled up. Of course it was in a white Maserati with red leather interior. She stepped out of her “look at me, rolling status symbol”, all legs and immaculately dressed to the nines. “How cliché.” I thought. It didn’t help my prejudice that she was movie star good-looking – in a head-turning kind of way that could result in whiplash. She shot her hand and shook mine vigorously. A firm grip, looked me in the eyes, knew my name and had done her homework on me... Not what I expected... This interview quickly transformed into a conversation with what seemed to be a long-lost friend, which was riveting (this time minus the sarcasm) The old adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, never rang truer, than with JoJo Romeo. She is an amazing person. Yes, she is stunning on the her exterior in a very obvious and clas-

She has had some tough knocks along the meandering road of life and she owned up to many regrets, but her mantra “AFOG,” another freaking opportunity for growth, the acronym she coined as her guiding principle through life, has enabled her to invert any negative situation and turn it into a positive. For this go-getter, obstacles are merely learning experiences to grow from. “When something bad happens, I am not going to marinate in it or play the ‘poor me’ role,” asserts this single mother of five, whose busy life leaves no time to ruminate. Jojo insists every experience leads to an opportunity to activate. In fact her position in the title business led her to her current role as a leading real estate agent at Surterre Properties. “As a Title Rep, I worked with many agents and recognized and pursued the opportunity to embark on a successful career in the real estate industry.” Once Jojo obtained her license and aligned with an agency, she confidently began knocking on doors in search of listings. It only took three knocks to get her first client, resulting in a $6 million dual transaction. From there, she hit the ground running. By the end of her first year as an agent, she closed $25 million. Year two resulted in $50 million of transactions. In her third year she amassed $75 million in closings. One of her most recent listings was sold at a record price, in its category, in the neighborhood’s history. But for Jojo, whether she is selling a $23 million oceanfront estate or an $800,000 starter home, the work ethic, professional pride and concierge service she brings to each listing is the same. As an agent for Surterre Properties, which expertly handles her advertising and marketing needs and provides a supportive and professional work environment, Jojo is able to allocate her time to her clients. “My clients always get 100% of me,” she says, explaining the key to her award winning status. Jojo also attributes her success in the real estate industry to her ever present state of gratitude, garnered from her embarkment on a spiritual journey that set her on a path of intuitiveness and positive energy, which she brings to every listing. “When I go into a house, I assess its energy and vibe. I believe that every home conveys its own emotional make up that prospective buyers can feel upon entry. A well appointed home should feel like a warm hug,” says Jojo, who is also Feng Shui certified and applies that skill set PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAROLYN RIFE AND JOHAN WEICH

Pure Elements Water PROVIDING A HEALTHIER AND MORE CONVENIENT HOME LIFESTYLE, ONE DROP AT A TIME BY SUSAN IRBY

hat set out in the beginning as a simple concept to integrate clean, purified water throughout the home has now grown into a full-scale custom “Total Property” filtration system that addresses water quality throughout, including the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, pools, spas and even landscaping. At the same time, these specialty water systems have a proven track record for preventing pinhole leaks in copper plumbing. Over 39 years later, since his early days at USC, Pure Elements Water founder and CEO Rick Allen shares his passion for health and the environment by improving water quality utilized in homes day after day.

DWELL IN STYLE Creating a home environment where people can feel safe and confident in the quality of the water used throughout the entire home has always been at the forefront of the Pure Elements Water mission, yet, it has never been more important than today. “Research and water testing show aggressive chemicals and toxins in water are more prevalent than ever before,” shares Rick. “Our systems utilize custom-designed filtration and proprietary salt-free water conditioning to protect homes from chloramines, chlorine, carcinogens, heavy metals, and other toxins that are known to be harmful to health and the environment.” Without making health claims, it is widely known that every day activities such as bathing, cooking, drinking and all water consumption purposes are highly impacted by exposure to harmful carcinogenic contaminants. Pure Elements Water systems eliminate these toxins not only from the bath, shower and kitchen, but as well, the entire household using a special technology that protects inside the home and extends to the beautification of pools, spas, and landscaping. “The pH is generally between 7.6 and 8.0, measuring slightly alkaline,” says Rick. “Quality water is available from every faucet in the home, without requiring a drinking water system under the sink or bottled water.” Having a leading edge over generic water filtration systems, Pure Elements Water is custom-designed for the water conditions in each municipality and addresses the current water needs in a specific area. “It takes great effort,” says Rick. “But, the end result is the finest water quality and peace of mind for our clients.” Throughout the years, Pure Elements Water has formed relationships with municipalities, fostering sustainability by greatly reducing the reliance on plastic water bottles which can take over 1,000 years to degrade. Over 40 billion plastic bottles go into landfills each year. Pure Elements Water also provides an effective alternative to old fashioned salt-based water softeners, which are very damaging to the environment. Because of the emphasis on green technologies, home developers and private clients alike have embraced its eco-friendly approach. One of the most exciting benefits of the Pure Elements Water systems is in the prevention of pinhole leaks in properties with copper plumbing. “The health implications of PEX plastic tubing and epoxy linings are still unknown, especially in our aggressive water conditions.” explains Rick. “We are very proud of the fact that our salt and chemical-free water systems have proven effective in the prevention PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY FLOREZ AND COURTESY OF PURE ELEMENTS WATER

of pinhole leaks, without the need for expensive and disruptive re-piping.” And, with over 10 years without having a further pinhole leak reported as being caused by chloramines after these systems were installed, Pure Elements Water systems effectively solves hard water damage issues as well. As a company, it follows the latest information regarding water quality issues and is consistently developing more testing capabilities to detect chemicals and carcinogens at lower levels. Additionally, the company is uniquely positioned to react quickly to health concerns as they arise. Most recently, the company appointed a Director of Health and Wellness which is spearheaded by Rick’s wife, Dianne, who emphasizes working with health
and alternative care professionals and their clients to improve the quality of water as part of the regimen for optimum health. Rick states, “I stay in contact with top engineers around the country and have great relationships with health and wellness experts to stay informed of leading health concerns. It is a very rewarding business, as what we do has a positive impact on lives daily.”

The Cloistered Collection’s Inspired Antiques and Unique Art Corona del Mar’s new boutique space offers European antique furniture and art for interior designers and their clients BY BETH FHANER

ome design enthusiasts have much to celebrate with the recently opened Cloistered Collection, a beautiful, airy and elegant boutique space tucked off Carnation Street in Corona del Mar. Featuring exquisite European antique furniture and unique decor, the shop caters to interior designers and individual clients alike. Georgia Vanites Ingram, a retired attorney, decided to open the Cloistered Collection after living in England for nearly five years. During that time she traveled extensively throughout Europe and attended famous furniture markets and antique fairs in search of extraordinary treasures. With its grand opening in early February, the Cloistered Collection offers architecturally interesting items ranging from a gilded set of church spire fragments on metal stands (great

for a fireplace or table setting) to a set of curly ram horns to a richly carved, late 18th-century Gustavian sofa. Everything in the shop is for sale, and most of the furniture is imported from Sweden—all considered antique (over 100 years old) or vintage pieces. Housing 18th- and 19th-century Swedish, Gustavian, French and British treasures, in addition to some unique Mediterranean pieces and the artwork and organic creations of local artists, the inviting shop boasts an abundance of natural light and a graceful, stylish vibe. On display during a recent afternoon visit were Swedish Griffin Chairs (circa 1840), a Rococo Swedish Clock (circa 1770), 19th-century Gustavian chests, various antique books, and 19th-century French urns as well as other fabulous furniture pieces and accessories.
As Ingram found herself especially drawn to 18th and 19th-century Swedish period pieces that possess light tones yet are substantial, elegant and unfussy, she knew that the pieces would work perfectly as accents and statement pieces in California’s sunny homes in a variety of architectural styles. “The clientele in Newport Beach and Corona del Mar is pretty sophisticated and wants a layered look, and my pieces lend themselves to sunny, light California homes, especially a coastal beach house,” notes Ingram. If Ingram doesn’t have a certain piece that a designer or client is looking for, she’s able to source it with the extensive contacts she’s made abroad. Additionally, she’s able to assist clients with any placement and design needs. Any designers or home decorators who are looking for that statement piece to give a room a unique feeling will find exactly what they’re searching for with Ingram’s expertise. Future plans for the design business include bringing in a few African pieces, and Ingram admits that she would eventually like to expand to have items from all over the world. When asked what she would most like her Orange County clientele to know about her new endeavor, Ingram says, “Cloistered Collection offers high-quality furniture and unique decor that can work well in any kind of interior. Also, we’re able to source all over the world and help with placement and design.” With its thoughtfully curated mix of timeless antiques and unique art, as well as its additional design services, Corona del Mar’s new boutique space is, indeed, a most welcome addition to coastal Orange County.

our space reflects who you are. It makes you feel good and speaks to others about the essence of you,” says Jamie Bernal, co-owner of Jonathons Coastal Living showroom and design. To experience Jonathons Coastal Living (intentionally spelled sans the apostrophe “s”), is to meander through a welcoming beach cottage or luxury ocean front dwelling that is part retail and part full-service architectural design and styling. The expansive showroom located just off Euclid in Fountain Valley is open to the public and they sell right off the floor to the public and trade. You can also make an appointment with one of their stylists for a full-service design build. “Our design service is the bulk of our business,” explains Jamie. “But we are a unique mix of interior design, retail sales, and now, full architectural design builds.” One offering of particular interest is an accessory install. Stylists come to the home, gain an understanding of the desired look and feel, access what is needed and return ready to complete the room makeover. “From bath bombs to bath soaking tubs, we do it all,” shares Jamie. “Just leave a key and come home later to everything all set up.” Now in its seventeenth year, Jonathons was named for her dad who owned an antique and
collectibles store in Cypress; Jamie grew up in nearby Long Beach. “My parents’ store was filled with gifts, gourmet foods and antiques. I fell in love with everything for the home,” says Jamie. Then, she met her husband, Franco, who grew up in the furniture upholstery business.Together Jamie and Franco were a match made in furnishing success. They married in June and in October of that same year, took a leap of faith and opened a 10,000 square foot showroom officially launching Jonathons Coastal Living.“We were and still are a grass roots family business,” Jamie said, having started in Orange County and now expanded to customers in Los Angeles, Palm Springs and as far as Hawaii.“I’d have to say that my husband and I make a great team in that he has always had the big picture furnishings vision and I have always been more in the details,” smiles Jamie. Throughout the years, Jamie and her husband have developed relationships with local artists and galleries to provide distinctive art pieces for homes and as well, they do a lot of special ordering. Most recently, customers have come to them for both small and large design builds that include window coverings, wallpapers, flooring and furnishings which is the heart of their newest addition, Jonathons Studio, specializing in architectural design and project management.
“Jonathons Studio is a natural extension of our core business of design,” said Jamie. Asking versatile questions from “how do you see yourself using this space” to “what kind of food and drinks do you love” allows the Jonathons’ design team to create functionality and joy in the home. “Working with someone on design is an intimate experience,” shares Jamie. “Our passion is in helping clients create beautiful spaces that they are proud of and can enjoy.”Working with budgets of all price points, Jamie attributes personal service to their success in addition to remaining price competitive, explaining that while it is easy to find products, especially in today’s environment, selecting and having an eye for putting it all together is an “entirely different story.” “We are a ‘people’ business,” exclaims Jamie, “that’s why we got into this business and that is why we stay. Seeing clients’ faces light up with excitement when they step into their new space brings us a fulfilling happiness – a special happiness that we get to experience every day. It doesn’t get any better than that.” Call the showroom for a design appointment or stop in and shop right off the floor. Jonathons’ design team is available to assist you no matter the size of the project.

Julie Laughton Design Build: Where Creativity Meets With Precision BY RITA GOLDBERG

atching Julie Laughton at one of her worksites, imposingly clad in her de rigeur uniform of jeans, boots and a crisply starched white shirt, commanding the reverence of a crew of workers that would intimidate the most manly of men, makes you want to immediately put her in charge of your remodel - maybe even your life. The highly successful owner of a construction company that employs over 50 workers, full time and sub, is impressively skilled, talented and hard working - and she demands those attributes from everyone on her team. With Laughton at the helm of your home redesign, everything from the cement foundation to the fabrics of your cushions will be done right. This licensed and credentialed contractor/architect/space planner/landscaper/ designer always has her client’s back. “I protect my clients more than they protect themselves,” says Laughton, who recognizes that contracting work can entail serious liabilities and must be done correctly every step of the way. Laughton is all about high quality workmanship and, in her nearly 30 years in the industry, has never been called back to make adjustments. Many contractors, in contrast, are cited for defects. In fact, 50 percent of her jobs are for projects that went bad and need to be redone or fixed. “Often, people make the big mistake of being their own general contractors to save money but spend double or more because they don’t know how to demand efficiency or they make major errors that require having to go back to the drawing board,” says Laughton. Laughton’s discerning roster of clients, that include famous actresses, movie producers, professional athletes, culinary moguls and family members of White House officials appreciate her ability to create an environment that makes everyone happy to come home. A home has to look and feel right, according to Laughton. And that ‘all starts with a good plan’ - the motto that serves as her guiding principle. Laughton’s remodels always start with the floor plan. “When a home is well floor-planned, it functions correctly,” she insists, explaining that the flow and space design of the interior is paramount to a good outcome. Organizing space properly requires understanding the owner’s living and lifestyle needs. Although certain features, such as natural light and airy, oversized rooms, are universally incorporated into all her projects. After function comes aesthetics. “The design and colors have to be right. When a space looks right, it feels right.”When it comes to looking right, less is more according to Laughton, who insists on purging and cleansing

spaces of unnecessary clutter as her starting point. Looking right also has an element of subjective taste to it and that is another one of Laughton’s hallmarks. According to Laughton, currently the prevalent trend veers towards modern and clean lines. Most often the request is for very light-hued or even white natural materials such as Calacatta marble. But there are still plenty who favor the traditional style and display a preference for rich dark woods.Whatever the client’s taste, Laughton will deliver a finished look that satisfies. “I had a client whose home was an elegant Tudor style estate and he wanted to maintain the integrity of the home in the remodel. He didn’t think I could do what he envisioned. But with my arsenal of master craftsman, that include some of the best available carvers and finishers, I created exactly what he wanted,” Laughton says, admitting that this particular project is among her favorites. When it comes to bringing a client’s vision to fruition, Laughton can be versatile in her creations and even enjoys using striking materials, such as a
vibrant marine quartz, to intersperse a pop of color. Laughton’s well-trained eye and instinctive understanding of what will work best, along with her creativity, enables her to give clients far more than they expect. “I see what others don’t and then I create it.”

Levik’s Jewelers offers its clients the opportunity to design their own custom jewelry using GIA and EGL certified loose diamonds and 18K gold, with the assistance of a team led by Andre Ghazarian, who is first generation American but fourth generation jeweler. For Andre, the talent and passion for jewelry designing is deeply rooted in his bloodlines while his custom line is primarily modern. A graduate of the prestigious Gemological Institute of America (GIA), Andre’s skill set is well developed. “Although, I may have inherited my talent and creativity from my father, grandfather and great grandfather, my style is uniquely my own,” says Andre. Each member of the family has a signature style evident in the array of dazzling creations that are on display. “My designs veer towards the use of precious gemstones such as sapphires, rubies and emeralds set in unexpected configurations,” he explains. “My father’s signature style is evident in the diamond cocktail rings that define his hallmark and my grandfather’s creations are Art Deco inspired.” Andre’s inspiration comes from his environment, taking cues from eye-catching architecture

and elements of fashion.“I will look at a building and infuse its structure into my creations,” explains Andre.“Even the colors and prints on the fabric of the clothes worn by a passerby will implant in my creative psyche and lead to my next design. I am always watching and thinking of ways to incorporate my surroundings into my work.” Clients also get to participate in the design of their creations. Andre enjoys collaborating with customers who have a vision for their coveted item.“I enjoy sitting down with someone who wants to create the design of a one-of-a-kind dream piece.”The sophisticated computer software available in the store enables such clients to see a three dimensional version to preview the finished product before it is made. Selling jewelry for this family is second nature. “We know everything about each piece we carry,” offers Andre.“When you make the jewelry, as opposed to purchasing it from an outside source, you know exactly what it is.The quality of the stone,
the composition of the metal, and the expertise of the setting are all validated and guaranteed.”

Insignia Mortgage Secures Funding for Complex Loans BY RITA GOLDBERG
A
lthough the infamous mortgage crisis occurred over ten years ago, and OC home prices have rebounded past pre-recession highs, banks and most other major lending institutions are still imposing the stringent standards devised in response to the decade old occurrence. Two years of income verification, strict loan to value guidelines, and specified debt asset ratios are the standard criteria traditionally used to grant home loans at market lending rates. While this formula may satisfy regulatory agencies, it has created limited opportunities for many qualified buyers. To address this void, Jeff Edwards, Partner of Insignia Mortgage, with offices in Beverly Hills and Corona del Mar, is ready to provide non-traditional criteria lending. “There are many reasonable situations that create an alternative financial picture for clients who make reliable borrowers,” says Edwards. “We are adept at evaluating an applicant’s ability to make payments on the loan,” he explains, citing Insignia’s zero default record on nearly two billion dollars of loan originations since its inception six years ago. “We don’t just look at tax returns for income verification. People who are self-employed, foreign citizens, or beneficiaries of irrevocable trusts are some of the examples of loan applicants who present as solid candidates upon further inspection of their ability to make payments.” Loan to value ratios can also skew the depiction of a borrower’s viability, according to Edwards who often uses cross collateralization to qualify clients. “It’s about looking at someone’s total net worth. We are confident that our borrowers would sell an asset before defaulting on a loan,” Edwards explains. As long as Edwards can confirm an applicant’s ability to make the payments, he will work to secure the loan in line with the market rates, currently between three and four percent. Many of his clients present complicated loan scenarios such as 1031 exchanges, Foreign National transactions, or clients who have recently sold a company with large assets yet offer no

traditional income. Insignia can even accommodate clients with a recent credit event, according to Edwards who successfully secures funding for complex loans. Insignia is typically able to fund large mortgages, with $2 million and up loan amounts making up much of its origination portfolio. Insignia is the number one institution in the nation for multi-million dollar home mortgages and has been featured in The Wall Street Journal as the go-to source for securing super jumbo loans. Edwards is Insignia Mortgage’s key contact as the representing Orange County broker, but his partners, Damon Germanides and Chris Furie, based in the Beverly Hills office, are available
to facilitate with the requirements of additional complexities as they arise. Each partner has an average of 20 years of financial services experience ensuring a wealth of expertise behind Insignia Mortgage’s offerings. “We are a group of team players with a get-it-done attitude,” says Edwards. “Over the long-term, real estate is still the best way for an individual to amass wealth and we are here to help our clients achieve that goal.”

’ve always been inspired by the idea that food is a universal language that brings people together. I’ve been fortunate to receive diverse exposure to international cuisine, working with chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Jean-Georges Vongerichten who taught me the technique of utilizing new flavors alongside unique ingredients. The Charred Calamari dish featured at Cucina Enoteca represents that philosophy. This dish is simple in approachability but elevated in technique. Sourcing high-quality ingredients such as Monterey squid and locally grown tomatoes is key to creating this fresh charred calamari dish that rides the tightrope of intense flavors with a balance of sweet tangerine, savory romesco, acidity with preserved lemon, and an olive and tomato umami. I also incorporate a specially procured fish sauce which really ties in the influence Asian, Italian, and Mediterranean cuisines—a true Southern California cultural mash-up.
Hazelnut Romesco
Charred Calamari with Hazelnut Romesco 1 lb squid, cleaned, split in half, marinated (recipe include) 1 heirloom tomato, 1” diced 3 tangerines, cut in wedges 1 tbsp Kalamata olives, sliced thinly 1 tsp preserved lemon rinds, thinly sliced hazelnut romesco (recipe included) 1 cup arugula leaves, as garnish In a heavy grill pan or cast-iron pan, add 1 tbsp olive oil until smoking hot. In small batches, carefully add in the marinated squid, pressing down to char the surface. Cook for about 1 minute. In a mixing bowl, combine tomatoes, tangerines, olives, and preserved lemons. Once squid is charred, toss in to the mixing bowl and toss ingredients together. Season with salt and lemon juice, if needed. Divide the hazelnut romesco between four plates, adding as much or as little as desired. Carefully divide the squid salad between the four plates. Garnish with arugula leaves. Drizzle with lemon juice and olive oil to finish.
¼ cup toasted hazelnuts 2 tbsp grated parmesan cheese 1 cup diced piquillo peppers ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 1 tbsp sherry vinegar 1 tbsp chopped garlic 1 tbsp chopped parsley 1 tbsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp lemon Juice salt and pepper to taste Toast the hazelnuts until golden. Add everything to the food processor except for olive oil. Puree until chunky. Drizzle in olive oil to emulsify. Season with salt and lemon juice to taste.
Marinade ¼ cup brown sugar ¾ cup sugar ½ cup Three Crabs brand fish sauce 5 cloves garlic 2 stalks lemongrass (chopped) In a heavy saucepan, combine both sugars, fish sauce, garlic and lemon grass. Bring to a simmer over low heat until sugars are dissolved. Let cool. Once cool, strain the marinade over the calamari. Marinade in the refrigerator for 1-6 hours.

Craft Distillers Get Creative SPIRITED ENTREPRENEURS SHAKE-UP COCKTAIL CULTURE WITH NEW BOUTIQUE BRANDS BY BETH FHANER
E
ver since the Prohibition-era—with its bootlegging and proliferation of speakeasies—folks have been inventive when it comes to producing, selling and imbibing in alcohol. From the days of bathtub gin and rum-running to large-scale distillation facilities that are in the business of producing huge batches of alcohol for mass consumption to today’s craft distillers who are creating highly refined boutique spirits, cocktail culture has long played a distinct role in our nation’s history. Following the microbrewing and craft beer movement of the last two decades, micro-distilling (or craft distilling) has become the latest trend in libations. In recent years, the spirits marketplace has seen an emergence of small, independent distillers who are creating boutique brands that appeal to today’s sophisticated, sipping consumer. Here, we take a look at three spirited entrepreneurs who are carving out a niche with their own innovative brands.
A Legend Launches a New Line of Whiskey THE NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING, singer-songwriter Bob Dylan has ventured into the spirits business with his own signature line of whiskeys called Heaven’s Door. Dylan partnered with entrepreneur Marc Bushala, CEO of Spirits Investment Partnership (SIP) and one of the original co-founders of Angel’s Envy Bourbon, to produce his collection of American whiskey at a distillery located in an old church. A product that was years in the making and involved experimenting with countless blends, Heaven’s Door whiskey is finished in oak barrels from Vosges, France, and air-dried for three years. Launched in May, Dylan’s
initial trio of small-batch whiskey includes a straight rye whiskey, a double barrel whiskey and a Tennessee straight bourbon whiskey. The moniker of Dylan’s whiskey line pays homage to one of his most famous recordings. And befitting Dylan’s elusive nature, the folk music icon’s signature is printed on the inside of the bottle’s label and is only visible once the bottle has been emptied. Each bottle also features Dylan’s welded iron gates that he created in his Black Buffalo Ironworks studio from various objects found on American farms and scrap yards throughout his travels. “I’ve been traveling for decades, and I’ve been able to try some of the best spirits that the world of whiskey has to offer. This is great whiskey,” Dylan said in a statement to The New York Times. Next year, Heaven’s Door will introduce the limited-edition Bootleg Series (with ceramic bottles showcasing Dylan’s oil and watercolor paintings), in addition to opening a Nashville distillery and brand experience center in a 140-year-old church.
Earth-Friendly, Single Serve Cocktails FOR ALAN MILLER, founder and CEO of Blue Marble Cocktails, the catalyst behind launching his business of creating single serve cocktails involved a favorite pastime of yachting and the frustration of having to keep a bar stocked with various alcohols and mixers. When Miller couldn’t find the type of ready-to-drink cocktail he was looking for in the marketplace, he decided to simply create it. Miller began formulating his vision for his company in 2015, and he drew further inspiration from the iconic image of our planet taken in 1972 by NASA’s Apollo 17 crew. After seeing the image of the pristine earth, Miller knew that he wanted to create a product that was both high quality and earth-friendly. His stateof-the-art production facility now manufactures 2.4 million single serve cocktails annually, SUMMER 2018 | JOLI MAGAZINE

sourcing the best ingredients available and using only natural juices. The alcohol is then distilled over a 100 times to ensure high quality, resulting in a superior tasting cocktail. Blue Marble Cocktails makes 12 readyto-drink flavors, including varieties such as Greyhound, Bloody Mary, Cosmo, Mojito, Coconut Island, Long Island, Moscow Mule, and Cinnamon Toast, among others. All Blue Marble beverages feature ultra-premium distilled spirits, all-natural ingredients, no artificial sweeteners, dyes or preservatives, and come in environmentally friendly and recyclable packaging. “What we drink impacts the entire world. Not only are our refreshing cocktails convenient, the aluminum cans we use are completely recyclable,” notes Miller. “That means those materials can be back into circulation and on the shelf in as little as 90 days. Our culture represents giving back, paying it forward, bringing awareness, and working to make the Blue Marble bluer.”
Gin Reimagined POMP + WHIMSY BRINGS a modern sensibility to the tradition of gin making by infusing classically distilled gin with a natural, flavorful botanical liqueur. Crafted from a select blend of 16 natural and whole ingredients, including juniper, coriander, angelica, grapefruit, bitter orange, cucumber, lychee, raspberry, lavender and jasmine pearls, the result is a highly refined and elegant gin with tastes of florals, botanicals and citruses. Victorian women, who were the chief home distillers and recipe makers at the time, used the infusion of additional fruits or botanicals into gin to create a richer sipping spirit. Pomp & Whimsy’s aim was to bring new life into this long-forgotten tradition, while also updating it for a modern palate. “For over a century, women have been left

out of the cultural conversation on spirits. To date, the history of the cocktail has been written from the point of view of (mostly male) bartenders,” says Pomp + Whimsy Founder and CEO, Dr. Nicola Nice, Phd. “Yet, we believe that women are (and always have been) one of the key driving forces in trends in both spirits and cocktails. It is our mission as a brand to give women back their rightful place in the history of the cocktail, and a place at a table in the cultural conversation on spirits,” explains Nice. “We simply created what women themselves told us they wanted.” With so many inspired craft distillers like the aforementioned on the rise, today’s thirsty consumers have an ever-expanding array of options when it comes to creating and indulging in delicious drinks. Bottoms up!
