DIALOGUE WITH
Rae Cohen FOUNDING BOARD MEMBER AND CURRENT PRESIDENT OF
Newport Theater Arts Center For over forty years, the Newport Theater Arts Center has been satisfying thespian yearnings of those with a passion for the world of theater. If you’ve always wanted to act but aren’t ready to give up your day job, consider auditioning for an upcoming play at this local community theater based in the heart of Newport Beach. Rae Cohen, one of the local visionaries who helped bring this entity to fruition, tells of the the theater’s origins and present day offerings. How did the concept of a Community Theater in Newport Beach originate back in the 1970’s and what inspired you to make it happen? The City acquired the property from the state after plans to build a freeway ramp were changed. Some community folks requested a theater be considered. I joined the group in 1979, the year the City determined The Friends of the Newport Theatre Arts Center would be the organization to operate the facility as a playhouse. Did you create this alone - or did you have a group of co-creators who worked with you? I was one person on the board, but about seven other community people were involved, including a couple of mayors. I came in as a recording secretary. It was not my idea. How long did it take to stage the first play? The group formed in early 1979 and the first production was January, 1980. Earlier shows had been planned but we weren’t able to get it together until January. Since the theater opened, how many plays have been performed? As accurately as I can count, it would seem we recently staged production 231, Sherlock Holmes, The Final Adventure. How many local residents have performed in these plays? We have had many, many Newport Beach actors over the forty-one years, including some
24
JOLI MAGAZINE | ISSUE 4, 2019/2020
students, and we also attract performers from Costa Mesa, Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Mission Viejo. Our last show had an actor who drove in from Hollywood and the next show will feature an actor from San Diego. Do you have a standard director on board or do you use a different one for each play? We hire directors for each production. Some of our board occasionally direct but most of the directors send us their resume and suggest plays in which they are interested. Many of our directors have been from local colleges and universities, faculty as well as students. Each play
has a different director. Directors are usually selected at the beginning of the season. Who picks the plays? We have a play reading committee that reads and sees plays all year long. Directors also submit plays they are interested in. We try to pick a variety for each season. Once we make our choices, however, we have only begun. We then apply for rights from Samuel French, Inc. or Dramatists Play Service or one of the other houses. Out of the first five we apply for, we may get rights to two or three. Reasons we do not get rights include,” too close to Los Angeles,
CULTURE
the estate of the deceased playwright is not releasing rights at this time, or another regional or professional theater may be interested in doing the same piece next year.” Then our committee goes back to the drawing board to make other selections and we apply again. It often takes three, four or five months to get rights to all five shows for the following season. Who selects the actors? We have open auditions for every production. Notices of auditions are publicized on our website, in an actors’ publication called Backstage, on Facebook and on various internet sites actors are acquainted with. An actor can also call the box office for information on audition dates. The director selects the performers for each production. We do send out a season brochure announcing all the productions to anyone who requests it. How many volunteers comprise the cast and crew of each play? Of course, the number varies, depending on the size of the cast. Last year we did The Gin Game with only two actors. We also did the musical of Floyd Collins, with seven in the orchestra, fifteen in the cast, plus the tech people, the set builders, the stage help, the ushers, so thirty-plus people worked on that one. What is the commitment from actors for a typical play - how many hours of rehearsal time? It’s a big commitment, so you have to love it. After auditions, there are usually four weeks of rehearsal, usually four times a week, maybe sixteen hours. Then there is tech week, also known as hell week, which is more days and more hours. Finally, our productions run five weekends, with twenty performances. So nearly three intensive months are involved. What is up next? Our next production is Taking Sides by Ronald
Harwood. It’s an excellent, tense drama about Wilhelm Furtwangler, one of the great conductors of the twentieth century, who was at the height of his career when the National Socialists came to power. While many fellow artists left Germany as an act of protest, Furtwangler remained. He was accused after the war of being a sympathizer. He claimed he stayed so that he was able to serve and save many of his fellow citizens. It will open January 24, 2020. Who is the best contact for anyone wanting to be in a play or volunteer backstage or buy tickets to a show? Our box office manager Kathi Cervantes. If she doesn’t know, she finds out. She can tell audition dates, sign up volunteers and sell tickets.

BEAUTY
Winter Skin: Let’s Make it
Gorgeous!
E
BY DEBRA CORLEY
ven in our mild coastal part of the world, keeping your skin soft and glowing during the winter months can be challenging. Maintaining your routine hydrating professional facials is a must during the chillier months, but incorporating a little “DIY” home remedy in between treatments can ensure you are always party picture perfect throughout this season. As the weather cools, skin tends to get dry and flaky. The solution - dry brush and exfoliate. A natural bristled brush, to gently remove dead outer layer skin is the first step. When dry brushing, use a small circular motion with a light touch, followed by a luke warm rinse. For deep moisturizing exfoliation, the easy-to-make Pumpkin-Cinnamon Facial Scrub will do the trick. Made of all natural, easily available ingredients, this no-fail beauty product will brighten your skin tone and smooth your complexion. Apply scrub to face and leave on for ten minutes to penetrate the skin. The pumpkin enzymes will do their magic. Then use a washcloth to gently remove the product along with any flaky surface layer facial skin that needs to be sloughed off. Rinse repeatedly with luke warm water and pat dry. Complete your beauty regimen with the application of your favorite moisturizer. n
Pumpkin-Cinnamon Facial Scrub Ingredients 1 cup canned organic pumpkin 2 Tbsp. avocado oil 2 Tbsp. honey ¼ tsp. Cinnamon oil ½ tsp. Lemon juice ½ cup natural raw sugar
Directions Blend first five ingredients. Stir to create a smooth consistency. Add ½ cup sugar last, stir to evenly distribute all ingredients. Warm in microwave for about 10 seconds before applying.

A
s 2020 arrives, it signals the start of a new decade; but to renowned actress and entrepreneur Jane Seymour, it is a significant milestone. For 2020 marks her fiftieth year as a working actor, having received her first screen credit in 1970, at age 19. Fifty years in show business is quite an accomplishment, one that Seymour is happily marking with a winning role in the award-winning Netflix comedy “The Kominsky Method.” She’s playing Madelyn, the long-lost love of Norman (Alan Arkin), a couple reunited in romance after 50 years (and other spouses). It’s a role she is thrilled to play, especially since the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre, is such a force in creating some of the best shows on television (“The Big Bang Theory,” “Mom,” “Two and a Half Men,” “Young Sheldon”). “I think it’s amazing material. I think Chuck Lorre is brilliant,” Seymour says. “And of course working with Michael [Douglas] and Alan is wonderful. But Chuck, he’s incredible. I just thought that I know this character and I was absolutely convinced I could play her. And Chuck liked what I did so much, he kept giving me more material!” Seymour laughs and elaborates: “It’s like you earn something, I’ve earned my stripes by surviving my life and being who I am today, which makes me able to authentically play her.” The 68-year-old actress, who first made her mark at 22 as a gorgeous British ingénue and “Bond girl” in “Live and Let Die” (1973), has always worked, mixing up doing feature films, Broadway shows, made-for-TV movies, TV mini-series and starring in her own TV shows (“Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” being her most well known). As the years have passed, her talent remains – as does her natural beauty. Seymour points to the “natural” part of that statement as one of the reasons she’s been able to sustain such a long and varied screen career. “I didn’t do any of that plastic stuff,” she says frankly. “I didn’t kill my face, I haven’t done any of that, lasers, surgery, and because of that, I think I’m accessible, I’m relatable, because I’m authentic. I think it is just that simple.” But there’s more to it than that, as Seymour admits. “I never did succumb to any of the insanity of Hollywood. I just got on with working hard. I just kept plugging along, creating my own material, too. So I think from the perspective of a producer, rather than just an actress. I care about working with the team and making the project work, giving of myself to help contribute to it working.”
30
JOLI MAGAZINE | ISSUE 4, 2019/2020
She has been producing films, documentaries and television shows since the 1990s, but it is actually a whole different world that has given Seymour both artistic satisfaction as well as a very profitable revenue stream. “When I turned 40, I went through a terrible divorce and I lost everything, financially and emotionally,” she remembers. “My mother’s advice was to give the last money I had to someone who was worse off than me, which it
turned out to be anyone who was abused as a child, a cause I gave to at a charity event. That led to an artist coming to my house, who saw some of my artwork and offered to give me lessons. I pointed out to him that I was penniless, homeless – about to be homeless – and just in desperate debt from no fault of my own. So he said, ‘Well, the next couple of days I’m free. I’ll teach you how to paint for free.’ And he did. And I couldn’t stop!”
PROFILE
That artistic sparking has led to a whole collection of different businesses for Jane Seymour, beginning with her Open Hearts jewelry collection, started in conjunction with Kay Jewelers more than ten years ago. That idea also came from her mother. “My mother’s advice about dealing with adversity, and accepting it, however dire it was, was opening your heart and reaching out to help someone else,” Seymour explains. “She said it is important to have a purpose; and when you have a purpose, that helps you heal. So I kind of interpreted that as two hearts that were open, connected, and that’s where the image came up.” That business (she owns the copyright to the Open Hearts) has burgeoned into a whole new world for Jane Seymour. “From Open Hearts, I realized that I had a brand. I created a brand and my brand was authentic. It was not based on being an actress. I created the images and got involved with the design in a very personal way. I actually own the Open Hearts design trademark globally,” she reveals. “Then I started doing children’s clothing and
eventually ended up with Michael Amini, doing a very successful furniture line, which is literally sold globally. We do collections for AICO, Mike’s line. And I’ve been showing my artwork in galleries all over the country, I usually do about 12 shows a year. So that’s all now part of my life. And a part of me goes, ‘Wow! How did that happen?’” It all happened because this dynamo mother of four (and grandmother of nine) decided to take her destiny into her own hands. Nowadays, she’s so busy that the typical “when will you retire?” question asked of women her age makes her chuckle. “Life is really good. I have a lovely guy in my life. Even more important, I have my children, who are phenomenal. And the fact that I’m still having a very interesting time, so many outgoing, growing experiences, being creative in many different areas means my life is great. I’m definitely not ready to give up and just sort of pull the covers over my head and just say I’m done,” Seymour laughs. “I am busier now more than ever!” n

Meet the 1000 lbs sculpture desired around the world...
brought it to life using scrap metal and raw talent.
I EGG 771 is the world's largest nautical sculpture made
entirely of scrap parts, notably featuring it's 1969 Volkswagen trunk body. Composed entirely out of mechanical pieces found in junk yards, artist (Cristian Castro) has given
there parts a second life. Since then EGG-771 has gone on to be featured on TV shows around the world while also earning Castro endless awards.
IUpon it's debut EGG 771 hit the art scene with press from all corners of the globe. Following its buzz, large cash offers started rushing in from art collectors and car
enthusiast alike. However, Castro politely declined stating, "This is more than just an art piece to me. It's a symbol of second chances and creating a better tomorrow
lhrough hard work and innovation." following with "The owner of this piece has to be .omeone who understands these principals. Someone who can respect the piece and all it stands for." The world-famous crab is nestled up in Castro's studio where visitors stop by weekly to admire, photograph and, for the right person to purchase.
I In addition to EGG 771, Castro has manufactured a series

of sculptures for hotels, stadiums, corporate offices and more. His piece "27 fish" consist of 27 angler fish who hang from a steel frame. Their bodies consist of fully functioning 50's "Evinrude & Johnson" boat motors which propel when turned on paired with antique lights for eyes.

Newest on the horizon, and a must stay on your list, is Vista Encantada Spa Resort & Residences. This gem of a property, which opened in late 2019, is destined to become a coveted destination spot that scores high marks in all the essential vacation categories.

The property has been expertly designed and furnished by Lourdes Macias, the highly respected interior designer for Mexico Grand Hotels and equally respected matriarch of the Macias family, owner operators and developers of the property. Her style evokes the Mexican-Organic fusion that defines the touches throughout. Concrete washed facades blend effortlessly with the terraced boulders that dot the natural landscape. Open air verandas invite guests to enjoy cozy seating areas with the sea on display from every vantage. Touches of native Mexican artisans remind us of the local culture, depicted in objets d’art placed effortlessly throughout the environ. Jets.com Raises the Bar for Private Air Travel BY RITA GOLDBERG
W
hen it comes to air travel, there is nothing like having a private jet at your disposal. While there are several options to secure your spot in the elite world of luxury sky travel, more and more savvy travelers are opting for Jet Cards, a system that allows clients to pre-pay an allotment of flying hours at a locked in rate. Damian Klinger, founder and owner of JETS.COM explains how jet cards work and why booking through the right private aviation company can make a huge difference in your travel experience and cost. “All Access Jet Cards at JETS.COM enable clients to pre-pay for guaranteed flight time in increments of 25, 50 or 100 hours at a set “all-inclusive” cost,” says Klinger as he explains the business model that fueled the growth of his jet brokerage business.
36
JOLI MAGAZINE | ISSUE 4, 2019/2020
“We are very transparent with our pricing which averages about $5200 to $10,600 per hour depending on the size and passenger capacity of the aircraft. There are no hidden costs such as fuel surcharge or tarmac down time. Also, with our jet card concept, the pre-paid hours are guaranteed so clients are not subject to price variance which occurs in correlation to supply demand factors or fluctuation in fuel costs. Best of all, there is no huge outlay or lock in fee, typically associated with full or fractional ownership. It’s really the most streamlined way to enjoy this luxury.” While the consistent, easy-to-understand cost structure is one reason why travelers like JETS.COM, the company has also earned a stellar reputation in all the other important criteria, including safety, aircraft availability, and the incomparable level of service and ‘personal touch’ that clients can expect.
Safety is such an important concern at JETS. COM, that the company devised its own “Assure Aviation System” in addition to securing trip check reports from the best reputed 3rd party safety entities - ARGUS and WYVERN. As a next level safety control, JETS.COM employs a highly skilled safety compliance auditor. Chief Safety Officer Captain Bob Archibald oversees the unique Assure Private Jet Safety Program that is one of the hallmarks of JETS. COM. Captain Archibald is highly educated in aviation management and flight technology and holds numerous aviation ratings and certifications. But most importantly, with over 21,000 flight hours and 30 years in the industry, Captain Archibald is expertly equipped to ensure compliance with the highest standards in the aircraft itself, the maintenance it has undergone and the pilot who will be flying the jet. “Aircrafts and crews are thoroughly checked out and the information is always shared with the passengers,” says Klinger. While safety is paramount, reliability is another important value at Jets.com. Clients can count on jet transport to be available when they need it. Jets.com has built strategic alliances with the most reliable aircraft operators to ensure planes are always available. “We work regularly with companies that own about 500 aircrafts and have relationships with even more operators for access to 1000’s of planes if needed,” tells Klinger. JETS.COM also has six dispatchers, working 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to oversee scheduling and timely rescheduling.
“Since the company was founded, over a decade ago, we have always secured a flight for every client,” says Klinger. Clients matter at JETS.COM. The concierge service ensures that each client has access to someone 24/7. Clients can also look forward to Klinger’s personal show of gratitude by being invited to hosted client appreciation events and coveted experiences such as Formula 1 and Superbowl. “Private air travel is about luxury,” says Klinger. “We make sure that for our clients that experience extends above and beyond their time in the sky.” n

MOCHAS, MASERATI’S and

“hey, let’s meet for coffee in the morning.” A simple statement that has led to a saga of what can only be described as a national phenomenon. From flashy Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, up to Newport, Rhode Island and out to Newport Beach, California, Cars and Coffee truly has taken on a cultural life of its own. But here, in the OC, the weather is ideal for a shorts and sweatshirt Saturday stroll with a gang that’s more than ready for a morning amidst shiny paint jobs, gleaming chrome and some seldom seen classics. Welcome to Cars and Coffee, Orange County style, where visitors to the Outlets at San Clemente can view for free automotive excellence usually seen at admission based events. Today is no exception as the discerning eye glimpses Jeff Wu’s immaculate 1957 Mercedes Benz 300 SL roadster parked next to two 300 SL gull wing coupes, parked next to another 300 SL roadster. And finally, like a radiant red exclamation point at the end of this chorus line of collectibles sits Dave Shockley’s 1949 MG TD. No, this isn’t the Concourse event at Pebble Beach; it’s just another Saturday morning. Curiosity made us ask Just how did this all come about? When questioned, locals generally agree with the lore of some 30 years ago when a group of hot rodder types -

Donut Derelicts, by name – met up for an ad hoc hot rod meet at a Huntington Beach donut shop. It grew from there. Eventually, the non hot rod groups sought other venues resulting in today’s happening. With a simple statement, an entire movement ended up in the parking lots of donut shops, coffee houses, restaurants and strip malls all to admire the craftsmanship in these old cars and, more importantly, to share friendships. What was a few visiting friends just hangin’ out decades ago, has become an event with its own identity and culture. Additionally, the concept name has been copyrighted and trademarked; offshoots have sprung up on cable TV shows and social media postings galore. The European car press has even come to town to cover it. Once again the car culture has an audience not witnessed since the ‘60’s muscle car glory days. Here at the Outlets in San Clemente, the cars are the draw and the participating people make it happen. On Saturday mornings they gather, the harried physician; the retired CEO; the jet setting entrepreneur and local shop keeper all become one: just a car guy- or gal – simply hav-

These are friends and these are the day’s events. And what about that green ‘72 Dino Ferrari over by that 60’s something Shelby GT350? “It has 9000 original miles; and been under a cover most of that time.” owner Jim Selevan replies with a smile “Oh, and the Ferrari color chart says it’s yellow – Giallo Senape by name, 47- year old original yellow paint. “ Continuing, he relates a bit of the Dino brand racing history along with some more obscure racing facts on the fabled Ferrari marque. sharing owners’ stories, the strolling crowds drinking coffee and scratching the occasional dogs head! Truly more than just a cup of coffee. And finally, as if on cue, from the next row of classics comes unfamiliar exhaust tones. Quickly following the group headed to the noise, one catches sight of reddish brown fenders and distinctive double bubble hood of the front engine, two-door coupe slowly pulling into the spectator filled lane. There, like sighting a very rare gemstone, sits the Italian automotive equivalent - an Alfa Romeo Zagato Coupe - SSZ. A precious jewel indeed! Then, as quickly as it appeared, it was gone, absorbed into the crowd leaving only a faint scent of petrol fumes and the nodding heads of those who know of these legendary cars. And of those who will search for it at next week’s Cars and Coffee. n

NESTLED ON A ROLLING HILLSIDE OVERLOOKING THE PACIFIC, THIS BREATHTAKING TUSCAN-STYLE VILLA EMERGES AS A MALAGA COVE MASTERPIECE.

Originally built by noted South Bay architect George M. Sweeney in 1986, this dazzling Tuscan-style mansion in Palos Verdes Estates underwent an across-the-board remodel and expansion in 2004 that spared no expense when it comes to exquisite accoutrements. Think marble and tile imported from Italy to bolster the design’s authenticity, detailed hand-painted ceiling murals that took more than six months to complete and a circa-1738 hearth recycled from an old church in France gracing one of the home’s eight ornate fireplaces.
Pair that with unparalleled amenities — like a mosaic-tiled pool and spa inspired by the luxe Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas — and jaw-dropping panoramic views from Long Beach all the way to Point Zuma, Beverly Hills and beyond, and this heavenly haven now on the market for $12.8 million represents the ultimate in resort-style living.
“This home has one of the best views in all of Southern California, and its timeless design and elaborate grounds make it feel like a world-class resort,” says Mark Todd, who is co-listing the property at 705 La Questa with Sharon Wang, both of Compass. “It’s made with first-class construction throughout, and it feels like an authentic Italian villa.”

THE
STAR OF THE SHOW?
A secluded, resort-style backyard boasting amenities galore, including a covered patio that runs the length of the home and features a seating area with fire-pit, powder room, built-in barbecue and dining area with portable heaters, along with a show-stopping pool and spa with water and fire elements designed by Mark Scott & Associates, and a putting green sporting its own sand trap that should be at the top of the list for the avid golf enthusiast. “The most notable aspect of the home is the surprising backyard oasis,” says Carol Lee of Compass, who is listing the distinctive property for $5.9 million. “It has many unique features that are completely different from what you would find at nearby homes.” Situated on a 15,560-square-foot parcel of land at 18 Via Burrone—in the affluent guard-gated community of Pacific Heights, near Crystal Cove State Park and Fashion Island—the three-bedroom, seven-bath residence stuns from the outset with an eye-catching two-story entry foyer boasting black-and-white glass tile flooring; a mesmerizing crystal chandelier that cost $30,000 to construct and can be lowered for cleaning with the flip of a switch; and striking staircase leading to an upstairs gallery space ideal for art. A wood-paneled elevator to all levels is off to the side of the foyer, as is an office that could easily be transformed into a media room courtesy of an existing projection screen.
The awe-inspiring environs continue to impress throughout the main level, with highlights including a formal living room with fireplace; formal dining room with a glass accent wall and butler’s pantry; and full wet bar equipped with a sink, wine cooler and refrigerator. A cozy family room, meanwhile, opens to a professional chef’s kitchen outfitted with Viking and Thermador appliances, a sizeable island topped with granite, an eat-in area and lighted pantry, while a hallway off of the kitchen leads to an en-suite bedroom with an oven, microwave and refrigerator right outside (making it the ideal guest or nanny space, or perfect spot to prep for a party), as well as a KitchenAid laundry room, gym, and three-car garage outfitted with a tankless water heater and whole-house water filtration system.
And lest one think the second level isn’t up to competing with its first-floor counterpart…think again. The ingenious touches continue with a second, glassed-in office space and private en-suite guestroom ideal for overnight stays. The pièce de résistance? An oversized master retreat that doubles as a plush, five-star hotel suite, complete with a separate seating room with fireplace, TV, and coffee/tea area with mini-bar, as well as a duo of spa-like baths sporting large, walk-in closets. An overall added bonus? Lovely Meredith Baer-designed furnishings and 40-plus pieces of artwork curated by Ethos Contemporary Art—all of which can be purchased separately if one so desires. “This is one of the most stunning and surprising estates I have ever seen not only in Newport Coast, but all of Newport Beach,” says Lee. “The grounds are simply nothing less than spectacular, while the interior is the perfect backdrop for people who love to entertain and display art. You simply have to see it to believe it.”

Hosting Efficiently to Welcome Guests
W
e all know that having people come to visit and stay with us overnight during the holidays can create a challenge in finding the space to accommodate everybody comfortably. Now that the season is over and your guests have gone, it may be time to re-evaluate your needs and start planning for your next round of visitors. If you have an older home and the rooms are broken up into smaller spaces, it is more challenging to entertain large groups of people. As a designer and general contractor, when I remodel a home for a client I don’t just consider every day living. I also think about creating multifunctional rooms that are warm and inviting. Most people don’t have the space in their home to exclusively use a room as just a guest room a few times a year. The rooms have to be multifunctional or it will be a waste of space. Hosting efficiently is making the space comfortable for everyone so each room can be used to its maximum enjoyment and fullest potential. Space planning in your home is crucial. If you don’t have space planning, you can’t lay out the rooms and see all the options you can have. You must go through the process of finding out what will fit and won’t fit, keeping in mind the multifunctional uses that the room can evolve into. I had the honor of remodeling the home of legendary Disney Imagineer Tony Baxter. Tony is known for entertaining guests in his home on a regular basis. He had a guest room upstairs for years that had been rarely used. I helped Tony transform this room into a multifunctional guest bedroom and second home theater. It offered an additional place to watch movies and included a custom-made sofa bed for when guests stay overnight. The movie screen that comes down from the ceiling is hidden in a custom-made beam above the window. The beam matches all of the vintage woodwork throughout the room and home. We also extended the room out over the original balcony and left a small balcony between the guest/screening room and master suite. The patio outside the door offers a great view of the backyard. The door heading out to the patio was hand-made and custom-finished by my craftsmen, designed to mimic the existing doors that Tony already had downstairs. We

hile it takes over a billion years for a single diamond to form, it only takes diamond guru Glenn Verdult moments to identify a diamond so special that he will confidently write a check on the spot. Verdult, owner of Winston’s Crown Jewelers, is known as the go-to guy for one-of-a-kind jewels. His client base ranges from the international elite to ingrained locals seeking the perfect stone at the best value. Verdult has been brokering diamonds for nearly four decades. He knows diamonds and has unsurpassed product array on display in his elegant Newport based showroom and his flagship Costa Mesa store.
W
inston’s Crown Jewelers houses one of the largest diamond collections in Orange County. The available stones range in size, offering something for everyone. Clients who are ready to buy don’t leave empty handed. “Most jewelers don’t have the ability to carry expensive or unique inventory,” explains Verdult. “When a request for a large or particular stone arises, other jewelers have to reach out to their suppliers and may only gain access to one or two choices. The process could take a week or longer. At Winston’s, clients find the perfect stone, usually larger than they anticipated for their budget.“Many of my clients can afford to shop anywhere. I am able to offer the diamond they want, in
some cases over 20 carats - at an exceptional price. No one likes being overcharged ... whether they can afford it or not. Most successful people didn’t amass their wealth by spending an extra $1 million on a red or blue box.”

When a rare pink diamond or other highly coveted stone comes into his possession, Verdult will notify a selection of his clientele. “When a special opportunity presents itself, I contact a handful of my long-standing clients, and end up making someone very happy.”

Four years ago Nikki was an out-of-work, single mother trying to figure out her next career move. When she heard about a party rental business available for sale, she was intrigued. “After being laid off, I decided I wanted to be in control of my own destiny and was actually looking to acquire an established business,” says the Southern California native. “The opportunity to purchase Chic Party Rentals presented and I thought it would be a perfect fit for me. After all, who doesn’t love parties? It was an industry that I was unfamiliar with so buying the company was a little scary but also very exciting,” she shares. It didn’t take Nikki long to become an expert on all matters pertaining to the art of party rentals. She spent considerable time with the previous owners to learn the ins and outs of the business. just finished chemo today. Menopause is in full swing and sex is quite a challenge. I have never felt so frustrated…” Kelly had reached out to Dr. Bogard on Instagram in desperate hope of gett ng help. Years earlier the two women had met as fitness competitors, and had followed one another on social media since that time. Little did either realize that a chance meeting on the fitness stage was the beginning of a deeper relationship. At age 45, Kelly was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a devastating blow given the healthy lifestyle she had championed. She was still a newlywed to the handsome love of her life, Roger. With him by her side, she knew she would give whatever was necessary to beat the ugly

What she did not barter was giving up the deeply passionate intimacy between her and Roger. Chemotherapy had taken away more than her long blond locks. It threw her straight in to menopause and almost overnight sex became painfully unbearable. Th very treatment that was meant to save her life had stolen the new life she was building with her husband. As much as she loved him, the truth was Kelly’s libido had plummeted to nothing and she had zero desire to be intimate. This was not the life she had planned. She had been told that it was a “normal part” of recovery from cancer and was offered very few solutions. She was grateful to be cancer free, but wanted to enjoy sex again. She took a leap of faith and contacted her friend, Shyrlena. Aft r hearing Kelly’s courageous story, Dr. Bogard simply replied, “ I will help you. Do not worry.” Nine months later Kelly and Roger would call Dr. Bogard to report that their sex life was amazing. In fact, it was better than it was before the cancer. It is the Kelly and Rogers of the world that inspire Dr. Bogard to focus her career on helping clients with problems in the bedroom. Concierge Podiatry & Spa Stands for Beautiful Healthy Feet PRESENTING THE CPS “OC FIVE-POINT PED-I-CURE”™ BY RITA GOLDBERG

tep aside typical med spa - the new PedSpa™ has arrived in Newport Beach. For those wanting beautiful, healthy feet, Concierge Podiatry & Spa - Newport Beach is the sole “go-to” place in town! The brainchild of podiatrist and highly credentialed foot specialist Dr. Ivar Roth, Concierge Podiatry & Spa is the answer to those who have ever felt self conscious about their feet and want beautiful and healthy results. The well appointed elegant environment where Dr. Roth receives patients feels more like a first class spa than your standard doctor’s office. The oversized entry lounge, flooded with natural sunlight and open vistas, features welcoming plush spa chairs where medically enhanced pedicures are offered to clients seeking the very best in foot care! Clients can indeed expect a superior level of service as they sit back and allow the professional staff to attend to their feet. A luxurious mineral rich soothing foot bath, exfoliating scrub and hydrating massage are part of the posh treatment that features the use of celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann’s full line of mani/pedi lotions, products and superior quality nail lacquer. An alternative nail lacquer, Dazzle Dry, which is all vegan, is also available and it dries rock hard in five minutes with the performance of a gel but without the harmful effects. Medical grade standards of hygiene and sterilization are applied to all tools and equipment used. The hallmark of the spa is The CPS OC Five-Point Ped-i-cure™ foot examination personally conducted by Founding Podiatrist Dr. Roth. Nail deficiencies, skin health, circulation, fungus identifiers, and foot alignment are expertly assessed before the pedicure begins. “In my 34 years of practice in Newport Beach, I have seen thousands of patients (over 50% of those who have walked into my office) afflicted with discolored or irregular toenails, resulting from fungal contraction,” begins Dr. Roth, as he outlays the only known treatment plan (which he personally invented) to once and for all – rid patients of this unsightly condition. Most doctors convince patients that there is nothing to be done about nail fungus. Dr. Roth knows better and, to the benefit of thousands of his patients, has been able to cosmetically correct the condition (usually in three to

HEALTH & BEAUTY six months). If you are wondering how the treatment works, Dr. Roth happily walks patients through each step of his effective treatment for fungal infections that leave the majority of doctors stumped. The proprietary program starts with a unique laser treatment and the use of specialty tools to redefine the nail. This is followed by a protocol of in-house compounded, specially developed topical solutions. Finally, a unique blend of vitamins, supplements and oral medicines is prescribed to promote optimal regrowth of healthy nails. The process works and the end result enables patients to finally put their best and beautiful foot forward! “I want patients everywhere to have the opportunity for this kind of foot health,” says Dr. Roth, who is looking to use the Newport Beach flagship PedSpa™ as a model for the launch of future Concierge Podiatry & Spa locations. Dr. Roth cares about foot health. His genuine passion for this profession is further evidenced by his proprietary custom line of high-heeled orthotics he specifically developed to meet the needs of his female patients. If at this point you are thinking that Dr. Roth is a genius inventor, worthy of a coveted deal with Shark Tank, you are right. However, he is much more. His medical training has gifted him with surgical skills that are rarely evident in the podiatric profession. He trained in foot and ankle surgery at Mt. Sinai Hospital of Chicago with world-renowned podiatrist Dr. Lowell Scott Weil Sr. His foot and ankle care skills are so advanced that he even saved a patient from amputation with a sophisticated and delicate surgical procedure. It is not unusual for patients who have endured multiple unsuccessful surgeries to finally be healed at the hands of Dr. Roth. He has the distinction of being the Founding Chairman of Podiatric Surgery at Hoag Hospital of Newport Beach and was the first podiatrist awarded full orthopedic privileges for foot and ankle surgery at Hoag Hospital. With such impressive credentials, it’s not surprising that Dr. Roth has created a foot care model - The CPS OC Five-Point Ped-i-cure™ foot examination available at Concierge Podiatry & Spa of Newport Beach - that sets a new standard of care, offering a long awaited option for ensuring beautiful, healthy feet.

Amber exudes a passion for skin care and within minutes of meeting her you will learn that her interest in healthy and beautiful skin
HEALTH & BEAUTY began during her childhood. “I played esthetician (long before I even knew the word). I would seat my friends in the recline chair and apply home-made concoctions of lotions and potions on their faces. It was all I wanted to do.” When Amber got her first after school job at Mother’s Market, she was immediately drawn to the skin care section where she happily offered demos and advice on which products were most successful. By age 17 Amber was already manifesting her studio and started creating renderings of the spa she would one day own. “I am a manifester,” shares Amber. “I have successfully manifested everything I ever wanted. You do become your thoughts.” After an apprenticeship with esteemed dermatologist Dr. James E. Fulton, inventor of the skin product currently known as Retin-A and founder of the Vivant Skin Care line, and a degree from cosmetology school, Amber was ready to pursue her dream. The current Corona del Mar location, opened recently, after nearly 20 years in its former space, is the culmination of Amber’s vision for the ultimate skin care experience. To help her create the right ambiance, Amber reached out to long time client and friend, Designer Laura Brophy, to bring Amber’s manifestation to fruition. “Laura was a client at my original location in the Shape Up Fitness location where I opened my first studio,” tells Amber. “We started talking about an updated vision for the facility and I felt such an alignment with her concept that I knew she was the right designer for the space. She ended up redesigning the facility and everything looked amazing. I especially loved that she incorporated design elements from local sources to enhance the community vibe. At that point, I knew I could never work with anyone else. So when it was time to open my new location, I immediately reached out to Laura, who by then was also a dear friend.” “I listened to Amber’s hopes and dreams for her new space and interpreted her vision into the space,” says Laura, who has been a designer for 16 years and has served clients locally and elsewhere, including New York and Park City, Utah. The goal was to create a warm and soothing environment where clients can experience pre-treatment and post-treatment respite. Laura accomplished this and more. The intimate and private wait lounge is anchored by a vintage rug and an oversized floor pillow that invites cozy relaxation. A book case style bar cart
provides a set up for a calming pot of herbal tea. A macrame wall hanging and array of throws and cushions provide texture and cozy comfort. The oversized picture windows afford views of the recognizable neighborhood locale and ample natural light. Flanking the treatments rooms are the hallway walls with whimsical graphic elements featuring an abstract visage of facial features. The studio is warm, inviting, and friendly - just like Amber, whose clients, including Laura, consider her more than just their esthetician. Discerning clients, like well known Bachelor participant Amanda Stanton, rave about Facial Lounge. “After participating in The Bachelor, I noticed my skin had taken a turn for the worse.
When I met Amber and began treating my skin with her facials and The Facial Lounge products, it was incredible! Before I knew it, my skin was clear and glowing. I’ve been faithfully getting treatments from the Facial Lounge ever since!”

Dr. Katherine Ahn Wallace of Aviara Centers Brings Holistic Approach to Dentistry BY RITA GOLDBERG
T
he shape of your face has long been associated with aesthetics but recent research suggests that craniofacial qualities are also associated with health issues that range from chronic migraine headaches to cardio vascular disease, as well as diabetes or even cancer. In the last few years, important discoveries have been made with respect to dental health’s connection to overall health and at the forefront of these revolutionary findings is Dr. Katherine Ahn Wallace of Aviara Centers. Good dental health begins in infancy (some would say, in the mother’s womb), long before a single tooth has emerged, according to Dr. Ahn. “Improper jaw development can lead to severe health issues,” explains Dr. Ahn, who has devoted herself to understanding and remedying the problem. When the jaw doesn’t grow to its full size, the teeth don’t have adequate space to emerge. The typical result is a set of crowded and crooked teeth. But the more severe problem associated with an underdeveloped jaw is that the tongue doesn’t have enough room to comfortably rest and properly function, resulting in airway obstruction; the primary cause of teeth grinding, clenching, TMJ disorder, and sleep apnea. Airway compromise and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) are linked to many conditions including poor behavior and latent bed wetting in

Dr. Katherine Ahn Wallace, DDS children to poor concentration, fatigue, and craniofacial pain, as well as the onset or worsening of serious diseases. So what do you do to get your baby’s jaw to grow properly? Dr. Ahn urges mothers to breast feed for 18 to 24 months. “Breast feeding is not only perfect nutrition for the infant, it also plays a major role in jaw growth,” says Dr. Ahn. If the infant is having difficulty latching on, Dr. Ahn also advises mothers to seek evaluation by a dentist that specializes in frenectomies to see if he or she has extended frenum attachment or “lip or tongue tie” which could prevent full range of motion of the lips and tongue for proper feeding. She also explains that finger sucking, pacifier use, mouth-breathing and soft inflammatory diet all create an environment that contributes to improper jaw and facial growth and should be addressed as soon as feasible. Dr. Ahn recognizes that many mothers can’t easily breast feed and for those who rely on bottle feeding, she offers a protocol to h elp with jaw development. For children as young as two years of age, she recommends using a special appliance designed to guide the growing jaw. For older children and adults, treatment often entails a combination of using muscle retraining appliances, jaw development appliances, braces or Invisalign along with myofunctional, craniosacral, osteopathic, breathing, sleep and nutritional therapy. With extremely severe cases, surgical intervention may be required. Dr. Ahn is passionate about helping her patients achieve proper face and jaw development, improving their smiles and their overall health. Amanda Ibanez, who suffered from frequent debilitating migraine headaches, saw improvement within four weeks of beginning treatment with Dr. Ahn. Amanda sought Dr. Ahn out after exhausting numerous other treatment options that didn’t seem to work. “I couldn’t find relief for my migraines from any other source - ER visits, daily chiropractic visits, acupuncture, dietary changes, even Botox. You name it - I tried it,” shares Amanda. “Dr. Ahn’s treatment has resulted in a beautiful smile and best of all, a migraine-free life. I am so incredibly happy that my journey led me to Dr. Ahn and her caring, holistic treatment of my jaw and total health.” Dr. Ahn’s holistic approach to dentistry is evident in her initial consultation and turned
out to be the solution to patient Mai Zazueta’s health issues. “I wanted an improved smile and came in for veneers,” tells Mai Zazueta. “It never occurred to me that the neck and face pain or sensation of tingling and numbness in my left hand was a dental issue.” Dr. Ahn’s comprehensive plan to correct Mai’s health issues, stemming from an underdeveloped jaw, entailed myofunctional therapy and jaw expansion and the result, according to Mai, was the complete elimination of her uncomfortable symptoms. “I have no more pain, no more numbness, no more discomfort and am excited to put the final touch to my treatment by restoring my worn teeth with veneers,” Mai says. Lisa Chang, another patient of Dr. Ahn’s, suffered from migraines and sleeplessness before treatment. “The migraines are gone and I feel so well rested,” says Chang, whose sons are also in treatment with Dr Ahn. “It’s truly a revolutionary process the boys are going through to fix their bites, jaw structures, and breathing airways,” says Chang. “I am so thankful for Dr. Ahn and her staff for taking care of my family’s health.” When it comes to remediating airway obstruction issues, the younger the patient, the better, according to Dr. Ahn who believes its best to treat patients under the age of 10. Dane began treatment with Dr. Ahn at age seven. His mother, Kim Austin, was concerned because Dane was complaining of headaches and his teeth were coming in crooked, overlapping and crowded. She also noticed that he was clenching and grinding his teeth at night and sometimes sleep walking. “My son had a wonderful experience with Dr. Ahn. He was always excited for his follow up appointments because Dr. Ahn and her staff made the process and experience extremely comfortable,” Kim shares. “He is now 12 years old and not only does he have a beautiful smile, from a health perspective, his airway is no longer obstructed, he no longer clenches and grinds his teeth and he now sleeps soundly.” “So many problems are related to the jaw and mouth’s conditions and it’s almost always treatable,” says Ahn. “It’s so gratifying to see the vast improvement in my patient’s quality of life.” n

Jojo Romeo Brings Positive Energy to Real Estate BY RITA GOLDBERG
84
JOLI MAGAZINE | ISSUE 4, 2019/2020
HEALTH & BEAUTY
I
got the chance to catch up with JoJo Romeo, Sotheby’s preeminent realtor and reality TV personality. She is an impressive woman... Stylish and stunning on the outside while humble on the inside. Her life story reads as a redemptive narrative – a story of heartache, healing, and triumph. The high frequency energy that she emits attracts people because people tend to gravitate to energy – towards happy, fun, upbeat people. To that end, the energy or “vibe” that someone emits is real and impacts us, one way or another. The old adage, the tension/excitement/atmosphere was so thick you could cut it with a knife, rings true. Energy is real and something that is felt. We have all felt it. JoJo is a student of this and applies her knowledge of this science to helping her clients heal themselves and the energy in their homes. According to JoJo, when it comes to a home’s energy, you may not be able to see it, touch it or smell it, but you sure can feel it. And if that energy does not “feel” good, prospective buyers will know and it will undermine the sale of the home. If a home has a negative energy within, JoJo knows how to heal it. Her methods include a variety of modalities, and they work. “Most sophisticated realtors will stage your home to maximize the sale value,” says JoJo. “Decluttering, minimizing, and replacing outdated, shabby furnishings with fresh stylish decor is real estate 101. Other touches such as showcasing natural light and infusing a clean scent to permeate the home are also common tactics to enhancing a home’s value,” she adds. While JoJo applies all those tried and true methods when readying a home for sale, she takes her home preparation one step further. JoJo is a firm believer that the feelings and experiences of a home’s inhabitants are prevalent throughout the space and the energy of those feelings can be an even greater factor contributing to a home’s desirability. “I work with the best home healers in the industry. I am aligned with a top feng shui master whose perceptive ability to address a home’s needs makes all the difference. I also employ the use of crystal cleansing to clear a home of negative energy. But most importantly, I work with the homeowner to get at the root of the source. When a homeowner is stressed, depressed or going through a difficult life event, we need to talk about the issues and resolve them,” she explains. “Sometimes, I will advise homeowners carrying trauma to move out during the sale period so the negative energy can leave with them.”

Clients who work with Jojo appreciate her ability to get results with her authentic approach. “I love working with both sellers and buyers who understand the role of positive energy in a home’s value,” says Jojo. “I also like working with real estate professionals who share my philosophy and am constantly on the lookout to grow my team by aligning with like minded agents.” JoJo’s keen ability to evaluate a home’s aura and remediate any issues is borne of her own personal growth trajectory. JoJo admits that she wasn’t always so comfortable in her own skin. Her journey to authenticity took her through an intensive immersion of emotional introspection where she faced and learned to overcome all the raw feelings that held her back. The eye-opening shift in her spiritual energy that resulted has propelled her to her current state of professional clarity and an undistracted focus that is the hallmark of her success. But real estate is not the only platform were JoJo shines. JoJo is the kind of person who enjoys sharing her state of clarity with friends and colleagues. She facilitates a Women’s Empowerment Group that brings professionals together for sessions such as sound healing and nutritional guidance, designed to foster personal betterment. In spite of her professional success (she boasts nearly $600 million of real estate transactions), her biggest commitment has always been to her family. Motherhood is her first and foremost love. “My children are my greatest accomplishment. The way they love each other and relish family time together is my greatest joy,” says JoJo. “I have the ultimate reason to start each day with genuine gratitude.”
If JoJo’s approach to real estate and life resonates with you, and you are interested in working with JoJo, either on her team, to sell your house, or find the home of your dreams, she wants to hear from you! “I am always on the lookout for like minded people to work with.”

Compass South County Realtors A COLLABORATION TO BRING ABOVE-AND-BEYOND-LEVEL SERVICE BY RITA GOLDBERG

he old saying, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” rings especially true to South Orange County-based Compass realtors Tracy Weintraub, Kelli Haakenson, Ashley Rosenhain and Rhonda Russell. This dynamic foursome saw the value in aligning to bring their combined unique skill sets to their client pool. “Typically, real estate agents join together as part of a formalized team,” explains Tracy. “But that structure entails a group leader with other agents acting in support roles. We are all too talented to be anyone’s number two, so we came up with a concept that allowed us to forge the best of team synergy with the understanding of mutual respect and empowerment. We view each other as equals and are available to offer any needed support.” As collaborators, they meet regularly to seek and share professional advice, cover each other’s open houses, showings and even inspections

when needed. This collaboration has been a fundamental benefit to the success of these seasoned real agents. While core values and hard work ethics are the common denominators behind their success, the unique background and set of traits that each agent possesses brings enhanced value. Working at Compass is viewed as another huge benefit, propelling their united success. Each has worked at other real estate agencies but enthusiastically agree that their alignment with Compass has been a game changer. The high level of user-friendly technology, along with the company’s practice of pre-paying for needed home staging, offers valuable selling tools. Compass is also committed to societal betterment through its “Compass Cares” initiative, which brings agents together to regularly volunteer for needed entities such as food pantries.

racy entered the real estate profession ten years ago as the market hit rock bottom. While other agents were migrating out of the industry at the time, Tracy, who had been a stay-athome mom and volunteer, saw this period as optimal timing. With her daughter at college, Tracy had more time on her hands, and even though the market was soft, she saw an opportunity. “With the market at rock bottom, I felt I could only grow my sales from here,” she notes. Tracy considers herself a skilled networker with broad based outreach, which she is willing to share with her colleagues.
shley’s passion for the home selling industry began organically. “I got involved in remodels and personal builds as a lucrative hobby before formalizing my role as a real estate agent,” tells Ashley, who personally purchased, upgraded and sold nine homes. She realized she had an aptitude for real estate. Her remodel background enables her to identify trusted resources and supervise remodels to the benefit of her clients and colleagues. Ashley is considered to be extremely resourceful. When something needs to get done for a client, whether it is tracking down a no-longer-manufactured replacement part or overseeing an entire remodel for out-of-town clients, she is 100% on it.

I can absorb that stress and even bring levity and humor to the process.” Clients find Kelli’s personality comforting and reassuring. She authentically instills trust which is the most important component of each relationship, according to Kelli. eeting up with Executive Chef Nobu Matsuhisa on the occasion of the opening of his gorgeous new Nobu Los Cabos Hotel was a real learning experience, especially when it came to eating sushi and tiradito. As the famed chef whose 40-plus restaurants worldwide have satisfied lovers of his world-class melding of Japanese-Peruvian-Californian tastes for decades explained, “You should eat sushi the moment it is handed to you – and do not add soy sauce. Soy sauce adds too much salt and changes the taste.” And he says you should “always sit at the sushi bar,” for ultimate taste and freshness. Do that at his Nobu Newport Beach location or take a quick flight to Cabo San Lucas to experience his newest resort, complete with sun, sand, spa, golf and those delectable bites that make Nobu one of the world’s most renowned chef/restaurateurs. To create one of Nobu’s signature dishes at home, we’ll return to Matsuhisa’s roots in Peru. For while the chef was born and trained in Japan, it is in Peru that Nobu honed his unique flavor combinations that make his dishes so special. There, as he recounts in his latest cookbook “World of Nobu,” he discovered tiradito, a raw fish dish similar to sashimi but with a bite – then gave it a personal twist.

e’s back, and we’re so glad! After a short hiatus, David Wilhelm is back and better than ever. David and his business partner, Gregg Solomon, have created a go-to spot for locals, complete with harbor views, friendly ambiance, welcoming bar, and of course delicious food. Wilhelm has been in the dining game for over 30 years. He has made his mark with notable eateries such as French 75, Sorrento Grill, Chat Noir, Chimayo and Kachina as well as several other popular restaurants. The opportunity for Tavern House kitchen + bar presented itself while David was enjoying some rare time off after moving on from his partnership with Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern. The owner of 3-Thirty-3 approached him with an offer that he couldn’t refuse. He immediately put away his golf clubs, called his buddy Gregg, and just like that, the band was back together. Why was this an offer he couldn’t refuse? Mainly, because of the location! To be able to open an establishment on the water in Newport Beach is a special opportunity that doesn’t come along every day. First and foremost David wants Tavern House to be a neighborhood restaurant. Appropriate for a night out with family, friends or a special occasion. He’s always tickled when someone comes up to him and says, “I got engaged at French 75” or sites another one of his restaurants as the backdrop to a wonderful memory. His mantra of “Imagine you’re doing a dinner party at your own home” is evident in the food he has always served, and the hospitality he has always shown. That is what has made David Wilhelm’s brand one of the best and longest lasting in the business. The well-thought-out menu brings together the most delicious tastes and flavors from California, Hawaii and Mexico. The Red Snapper “Veracruzana” is one of David’s personal favorites. Heirloom Tomatoes, Castelvetrano Olives, Jalapenos, Garlic and Capers make this plate hearty and healthy. Fans of Wilhelm will rejoice in seeing his Buttermilk Fried Chicken on the menu. Served with Mashed Red Bliss Potatoes, Green Beans and Thyme Gravy, this dish is everything comfort.

David points out that one of the biggest evolutions in the restaurant business has been satisfying broader palates. In addition to an array of delicious salads that can be enjoyed with or without protein the menu also includes the Impossible Burger, which is a 100% plant based patty, complete with the all the fixings. No one has to miss out! Tavern House is also open for Sunday Brunch offering favorites such as the Christmas Burrito with Scrambled Eggs, Tots, Cheddar, Black Beans, Guac, Sausage and Red & Green Chilies Sauces (to be enjoyed all year long) and Avocado Toast Bennie, a spin on the popular breakfast choice with Poached Eggs, Grilled
Tomatoes, Arugula, Chile Roasted Corn and Hollandaise Sauce. The cocktails are classic and varied as is the beer and wine list. Something for everyone’s taste and budget. Stay tuned, as Tavern House finds its groove David is considering bringing back some of his greatest hits on a limited basis. For example, who wouldn’t be in for Chocolate Souffle Wednesday’s, a la French 75?

Yield Curve Inversion Leads to the BY JEFF EDWARDS
I
Return of Historically Low Rates
n what has become a tale of two narratives with respect to lead indicators, economists are at odds as to whether we can expect the best of times, the worst of times or something in between. On the one hand, trade tensions and dropping bond yields portend an eminent slowdown in the U.S. and world economy and a heightened risk of recession. Another scenario, citing healthy consumer spending, strong business confidence, low unemployment and better than expected earnings, supports the no-recession narrative. Complicating the recession narrative further was a positive revision on GDP recently even as global bond yields moved lower in the U.S., and more negative in Europe and Japan. While our own personal belief is the recession talk may be overdone, at some point, even with the U.S. economy in good shape, should the economic slowdown in Europe and China continue, the U.S. will be affected. This idealogy will play a role in the Fed’s September meeting. Odds favor another rate cut as the U.S. looks to keep it’s interest rates in line with the rest of the developed world. Mortgage activity has picked up big-time as rates have returned to near historical lows. While the high priced coastal housing market remains sluggish, we are optimistic the current low rate environment will motivate on the fence buyers. The drop in monthly payments from refinance transactions will also benefit the economy as more money will be available to purchase other goods and services. Given our belief about the resiliency of the U.S. econo-my, and given where interest rates are at the moment, it is hard to argue against locking-in purchase and refinance transaction as these levels. However, as evidenced by central bank policy in Europe and Japan, rates can go lower or even negative in today’s world.

T
he year 2019 will be remembered in the real estate world, for its mortgage rates that persistently and unexpectedly declined. While rates aren’t going to plunge another percentage point – November’s average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage was 3.7%, compared with 4.87% in the year-ago month, according to Freddie Mac. The average fixed rate is predicted to be 3.6% in 2020, which would be the lowest annual average ever recorded in Freddie Mac records going back to 1973. It compares with 3.9% in 2019 and 4.5% in 2018, according to Fannie Mae. The current record was set in 2016 when the annual average fell to 3.65%.
Mortgage rates are set, ultimately, by bond investors who keep a steely eye on inflation as a gauge of the yields they are willing to take. Rising inflation eats into their returns and leads to higher mortgage rates. In a low-inflation environment, like today, they can still make money while taking low yields, which translates into low rates for borrowers and support to the real estate market.

WITH THE RETURN OF THE ESTEEMED MICHELIN GUIDE TO CALIFORNIA EARLIER THIS YEAR, OC CHEFS ARE SEEING STARS. BY BETH FHANER
O
range County’s vibrant and ever-evolving restaurant scene rose in prominence earlier this year when the prestigious Michelin Guide unveiled its inaugural California edition, with a reveal event held at the Pasea Hotel and Spa in Huntington Beach in June. “Michelin is honored to reveal the 2019 star selection and to celebrate the talented California chefs and their teams included in the first statewide Guide in the U.S.,” stated Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides. “California’s trendsetting, laid-back and health-conscious culinary scene continues to boom, and as a result is an amazing showcase for the great local produce.” At the oceanfront celebration, a total of 90 California restaurants were awarded Michelin stars, including two one-Michelin-starred restaurants in OC, including chef Carlos Salgado’s Taco Maria in the OC Mix in Costa Mesa. “The enticing scent of meat cooking over the fire and house-made heirloom masa tortillas on the griddle set the tone for an amazing experi-
ence,” noted Michelin Inspectors. Hana Re, chef Atsushi Yokoyama’s omakase restaurant, located at The Lab Anti-Mall in Costa Mesa, was also awarded a star. Five restaurants in Orange County—Gabbi’s Mexican Kitchen, Garlic & Chives, Hiro Nori Ramen, LSXO and Mix Mix Kitchen Bar—were also named to the Bib Gourmand list, which is a subsection of the guide that highlights “restaurants that serve high-quality meals which include two courses and a glass of wine or desert for $40 or less.” Debuting in 1997, the Bib Gourmand acclaimed rating recognizes friendly establishments that serve good food at moderate prices, according to the iconic dining guide. Additionally, several OC restaurants, including Newport Beach’s Marche Moderne, Bluefin and Javier’s, as well as Costa Mesa’s Vaca, among others, also received “The Plate” designation, which means “Fresh ingredients, carefully prepared, a good meal.” Launched in the 2016 edition of the Paris guide, The Plate Michelin recognizes restaurants that simply serve good food.
Receiving a Michelin star can have an immediate impact for a chef, often raising one’s profile to an eminent level. Michelin-starred Chef Craig Strong of Ocean at Main in Laguna Beach and formerly Executive Chef of Studio at the Montage in Laguna Beach, knows first-hand about earning the coveted honor. “Earning a Michelin-star was one of the highlights of my career,” says Strong, who was bestowed a Michelin star for two consecutive years (2008 and 2009) while he was chef de cuisine at what is now The Langham Huntington, Pasadena. “With the award comes such an incredible sense of accomplishment and pride, but it’s something you must then validate day after day, and year after year. Michelin’s standards pushes chefs and restaurants to become better by forcing them to maintain consistency day after day, year after year,” he says. Strong also explains that twenty years ago, there were high-end restaurants and there were chain restaurants, the middle ground was yet to be defined. Today, diners want intention without the pretense. “I created Ocean at Main as a convergence of both,” says Strong. “It’s a culmination of my 25 years in fine dining restaurants and luxury hotels infused with the warmth and approachability of a neighborhood restaurant. People like refinement, but they also want menus that have versatility. At Ocean at Main, we see guests ordering a beautiful salmon or sea bass, and at the same table, their dining companion is enjoying a burger or pizza, but one that is still executed by a Michelin-starred chef. We’re taking the spirit of elevated hospitality you’d receive at an ultra-fine dining restaurant and applying it to a more approachable setting.”
