ith Spring in full bloom and Summer just around the corner, two of the most important days to celebrate are Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Joli prints quarterly, so in this issue we want to thank all of our Mothers and Fathers for all they bring to our lives, our children’s lives and our grandchildren’s lives. I especially want to give a shout out to my own father, my mentor, role model, rock and the best friend a daughter could ever be blessed enough to have. “Thank you Dad!” That being said, I was fortunate enough to spend the day with another amazing father, actor screenwriter, director and producer: Dean Cain. When I informed my team that I was going to meet with Dean for our Spring cover and profile story, everyone of my female assistants volunteered to help me for the day. Dean was a joy to work with. When he walked in the door of The Resort at Pelican Hill to spend the day with us, once I got past being star struck by his handsome boyish looks, I learned what an amazing down to earth, regular kind of guy I was lucky enough to be hanging out with for the day. Be sure to check out his interview profile! Dean is very candid and reveals a lot, especially about being a single father. He also shares his many travel adventures throughout the world. Not only does he have a home here in Los Angeles county, but has also owned a home in Spain for the last 20 years. At age 52, he has a lot more to do and an exciting bucket list for the future. Dean truly did inspire us that day, not only our whole Joli Magazine team, but also the staff at The Resort at Pelican Hill that came in contact with him. “Thank you Dean, the pleasure was all ours!” The Spring issue includes Health and Beauty inspirations. Be sure to check out our special section in this issue, featuring amazing, new and provocative health tips to improve the way we feel both physically and mentally. Have a wonderful Spring season! We certainly do have some beautiful blooming florals to enjoy this year, giving us one more reason to appreciate where we live every single day. We will back in the Summer. Until then, enjoy this issue!

That is what Stephanie and Barry Clark, co-founders of Flowerkist, did! The power couple, Barry, a seasoned wall street pro, and Stephanie, a mom of triplets with an entrepreneurial spirit, took their passion project to market with the launch of their CBD infused cosmetics and skin care line. Their story, by Shana Blair, is truly inspiring. Portrait Photographer Bradford Rowley, also profiled in this issue, is another example of someone who decided to charter new territory within his industry to build a successful business model. He knew what he wanted to do even before graduation and stayed the course. Now, decades later, his world renowned studios are booked solid with clients who want the lasting, heirloom worthy, treasures that are the hallmark of his artworks. Bradford is so well respected in his industry that award winning, world famous photographers, wanting to learn his techniques, seek him out for mentoring and attend his conferences.
You don’t have to be a new graduate or a young mom to follow your dreams. In this issue, meet Fashion Designer Debra Corley, who at age 60, has launched her newest business, Shop Embrace, that takes your wardrobe favorites and redesigns them into haute couturesque, one-of-akind, statement pieces. Then, of course, there is our very own publisher, Jolie Adams, whose passion for the magazine industry has been evident in this town for decades, culminating in the successful launch of Joli Magazine. Our town is full of talented visionaries who followed their hearts to embark on the path to success. This issue features some of the ‘best in class.’ I can’t wait to see what marvels are created by our newly arriving crop of graduates.

Bradford Portraits Studio BY RITA GOLDBERG
B
radford Rowley got his first camera when he was eight years old. Although it was only a basic Kodak, Bradford still recalls how excited he was. His passion for photography was evident even back then. By High School, every extra dollar he made went towards photography equipment and every spare moment was spent taking photos. “I was always taking pictures of my friends and my photos were better than those taken by professionals,” says Rowley. “I never thought I had a unique eye but I must have because my work is distinctive. I understood how to pose and position my subjects with respect to the lighting.” By the time he was 22, Rowley opened his own studio to pursue his career as a professional photographer. That was over 30 years ago. Back then he worked four jobs to subsidize his fledgling business which has now grown into the premier, internationally renowned portrait studio - Bradford Portraits - with offices on both coasts: Orange County, where Rowley grew up, and Palm Beach, Florida, where Rowley currently resides, as well as in New York. Clients flock from all over the world to commission Rowley’s talented services and pay as much $10,000 to $35,000 for a self-portrait featuring Bradford Portraits’ signature technique that makes the finished product exceptionally lifelike. Bradford Portraits services are in high demand and the studio will typically have 200 appointments on the books. Wait time for a finished portrait can be nearly half a year.
26
JOLI MAGAZINE | SPRING 2019
“I use a technique that features the best of new age digital technology combined with the finishing touch of the great masters,” shares Rowley. When clients set an appointment, first a series of photos are taken in the studio setting. The client selects the favorite which is then digitally enhanced using state-of-the-art, special technology that enables the studio to refine details such as each individual eyelash to give the piece realism and depth. But if that is not enough, a highly skilled artist will then paint over the piece to create a painted portrait effect. Artists who work at Bradford Portraits are so highly skilled that even the subjects eyes will appear to be gazing directly at you, no matter where you stand, as you view the final work of art. “I strive for the effect that Rembrandt and other famous portrait artists achieved,” says
PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY FLOREZ
Rowley. The final piece is then branded with a high caliber name plate designed by the same name plate artists whose work is found in world class museums to identify original Renoirs, Monets, Sargets and others. “I only work with top tier talent,” says Rowley who believes the caliber of his work can not be compromised at the hands of anyone who does not meet his stringent criteria. Rowley’s studios are so successful that he has attracted the attention of photographers from all over the world including some acknowledged as the best in their countries. “I run a coaching group, where I mentor nearly 100 of the world’s best photographers.” tells Rowley. “They come to me to learn what I know.” Each year, Rowley holds a three-day conference to share his wealth of knowledge on the successful portrait studio
model he has built. He also holds small group regional sessions, about 12 per year, to meet the growing demand for his keen insights on this artistic profession. Rowley enjoys the opportunity to help fellow professionals and, of course, decades later, he still brings the same level of enthusiasm and passion to his work as he did when he was a teen. “I found my calling early on and am still always excited to see each life-like finished portrait.”

T
he times they are a changin’ for Dean Cain, and that’s just fine with him. The actor-writer-producer can’t help but feel a bit jazzed as his 18-year-old son Christopher goes off to college, leaving this full-time single dad with a very empty nest. “He’s heading to High Point University in North Carolina, so I’m very excited for him,” Cain says, with just a hint of regret in his voice. “It’s a whole, brand new beginning for me. My life is changing dramatically now, because when you’re a single parent, you do everything. All of it. And I did everything. So now he’ll be in college, I have a big adjustment to make and now I can focus on work. I don’t have to worry about things the way I worry about them now, even still. He still hasn’t left yet. He’s almost there. I still cook breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s just gonna be very odd to be able to focus on just work.” And while most parents who send their children off to university naturally begin to think about all the things they have been waiting to do and start making big plans to check off a few of those bucket-list adventures that have been on hold as they raised their kids, Dean Cain is cut from a different cloth. “My life is crazy because any bucket list I could have come up with, I have achieved that and so much more, that it’s hysterical for me to think of a bucket list,” he responds with a chuckle, when asked what’s on his coming freeman agenda. But then, with another moment’s consideration, the 52-year-old Michigan native whose birth father was of Japanese descent (his adoptive father Christopher Cain, the film director best known for “Young Guns,” moved his new family to Malibu in the early 1970s) realizes that there is one place still on his non-work agenda. “I want to visit Japan, where I’ve never been. I’m a quarter Japanese. My given name is Tanaka, and so I’d love to visit Japan. [I was in] 23 countries last year, and I’ve never been to Japan! It’s one of those things that I want to do and I will do that soon,” Cain says bemusedly. “But I don’t have a sort of bucket list. I’ve achieved so much more and seen and experienced so much more than I ever could have imagined.” Over Dean Cain’s long career, which began with minor acting roles in the 1970s and 1980s, until his big breakthrough in the early ‘90s playing Superman/Clark Kent in “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.” That four full-season, 87-episode series cemented his fame and Cain has been busy ever since, with a career that encompasses not
30
JOLI MAGAZINE | SPRING 2019
PROFILE only acting, but screenwriting, directing and producing as well. Cain’s latest projects include roles in TV series including “Hit the Floor,” “Supergirl” and “Lady Dynamite, as well as numerous starring roles in Hallmark Channel made-for-TV movies, hosting the magic-show series “Masters of Illusion” and appearing regularly on the news program “Fox and Friends” as a Republican-policy advocate, regularly causing a stir on social media with his right-leaning statements. “I’m a history major,” he explains, “so I studied history [at Princeton University], and as I look at all of these things, I realized how incredibly lucky we are. I’ve always had an opinion, and as I’ve gotten older and wiser, perhaps I’ve just voiced it more often. Then with the advent of social media and things like that, your voice is able to get out there and be heard. That’s a good thing for me; I don’t use a publicist, I don’t run things through a publicist. I say what I feel, I mean what I say, I have a reason behind why I say things, and I’ll engage anybody.” Cain also appears as a pundit/co-host on the “Today” show and on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” and plans to keep up his political advocacy for as long as he can make his voice heard. “I don’t have anybody pulling the strings. There’s no puppet master. I make my choices and I am very happy that I do so, because I have my integrity,” he says frankly. “I look at myself in the mirror and I know exactly what decisions I’ve made and why I’ve made them, and I don’t have any regrets about that. I may have made some mistakes, but they were my mistakes and I may have learned from them, and maybe I’m gonna make some in the future, and that’s okay too. I have no fear of that. I have no fear of failure. To me, that’s the way you free yourself, is to have no fear of failure and to know that everyone makes mistakes. Everyone.” And don’t be surprised if one day soon Dean Cain’s name appears on a political ballot form in a California election, either. “I’ve been approached a number of times to run for office. I have been approached by various parties and a lot of political action groups and committees, and have had a lot of conversations with them. I don’t want to be a politician, but I would be willing to serve at some point in time, I imagine. I am not ready to now. This is not the time for me to do it, but I may be willing to serve in the future, and that’s the way I look at it,” Cain reveals. Until then, look for Dean Cain to keep doing what he does best – creating entertaining programming for viewers around the world, and being the best dad he can be. n SPRING 2019 | JOLI MAGAZINE

New Orleans Celebrating Life, Music and Fine Cuisine in the Big Easy BY JENNY PETERS
New Orleans recently celebrated a big birthday, marking 300 years as one of North America’s most vibrant (and resilient) cities. With its melting pot of French, Spanish and other influences, this port city on the Mississippi River in Louisiana has both history and modernity interwoven into a heady mÊlange of experiences. JOURNEY
I
t’s a place where costumes are king, and not just over the weeks leading up to and including its famous Mardi Gras celebration, for NOLA citizens will dress up and parade in the streets given the slightest excuse. And – throughout the French Quarter and the Marigny at least – there’s “music in the streets both night and day,” as Paul Simon so famously sings. So pack your favorite chapeau, drop a tutu in your suitcase and join us for a trip to the Big Easy. PERFECT PLACES TO STAY
Despite the fact that you’ll probably not see much of your hotel room during a trip to New Orleans, the city that keeps the music playing and the cocktails flowing well into the wee hours, finding the perfect place to stay will help to make the visit sublime. To enjoy the lap of luxury, choose the classically elegant Ritz-Carlton on Canal Street, at the western edge of the French Quarter, or the Windsor Court Hotel, also just on the edge of the Vieux Carré (the original name of the Quarter). Both provide top-notch service and a quiet oasis to rest after a full day/night in the city. Or discover the Soniat House, a private home built in the 1800s and now a stunning 30-room antiques-filled boutique hotel with balconies and a classic FQ
garden. Book a Grand Suite for the ultimate experience here. To get right into the thick of things, you’ll want to stay at the Royal Sonesta Hotel right on Bourbon Street, booking a room with a balco-
ny overlooking the crazy crowds that wander that famous party street. Looking down on the masses (and throwing some beads to revelers) is an endlessly fascinating experience, but don’t expect to get a lot of restful sleep in this noisy spot. The nearby Hotel Monteleone (circa 1886) is another famed FQ luxury hotel; even if you don’t choose to sleep at this famously haunted hotel, stop in for a drink at the Carousel Bar, which slowly rotates as you sip your Mint Julep. For terrific views of the city, the Troubadour Hotel in the Central Business District (close to the Superdome and the Convention Center) is a lovely place to call home, with nicely appointed rooms and suites and a rooftop bar called Monkey Board, a perfect spot for sunset Happy Hour or late-night quaff. TOP TIMES TO VISIT
There truly is always something happening in New Orleans, but certain times really draw crowds. The strongly Catholic city’s Mardi Gras festivities roll from Three Kings Day (Epiphany) on January 6 each year straight to Mardi Gras Day. Massive parades roll almost every night (and some days) in the last two weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday, when people dress in elaborate costumes and fill the streets of the French Quarter and the Marigny, where music and go-cups (carrying alcoholic drinks on the streets is accepted all over town) rule. There are formal balls, funny traditions (don’t

miss “The Greasing of the Poles”) and lots of beads, cups, stuffed animals, decorated shoes and even painted coconuts sailing through the air, to the delight of small children and grown adults. Enjoy, but remember that Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and the city really does go quiet. Another must-do in NOLA is the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, a massive musical extravaganza that occurs every year in late April and early May, seven days of outdoor concerts (12 stages featuring all sorts of genres) enhanced by the best festival food you’ve ever tasted. Essence Festival is always in July, held in the Superdome and featuring a distinctly African-American musical lineup, as well as seminars, parties and more. And Voodoo Fest happens annually at Halloween – that multistage music celebration leans toward EDM and alternative rock. Regardless of when you go, make time to see the incredible National World War II Museum, one of the world’s best. Then head to Audubon Park, where the fascinating Insectarium and Nature Center await (the city’s zoo and aquarium are also there). Add in City Park to see its famed (and massive) live oaks, the spot where duels used to occur; and stop into the New Orleans Museum of Art while there to see the works Edgar Degas painted while visiting NOLA. EXCELLENT CULINARY EXPERIENCES
NOLA is justifiably famous for its food and it is truly hard to go wrong by simply wandering around and choosing an eatery that looks appealing. But making time to go to some of the culinary classics is definitely in order, so put Commander’s Palace, Napoleon House, Antoine’s, Brennan’s and Mandina’s on your short list. For classic local hangouts that give wonderful food for surprisingly reasonable prices, have a po’boy with fried shrimp, oyster or catfish, sandwiches served on crusty French bread at Parasol’s or Mother’s; beignets at Café du Monde; and a thirst-quenching shaved ice sno-ball at Hansen’s, Pandora’s or Ike’s. And of course, anyone who loves great meals needs to visit at least one of New Orleans’ numerous James Beard-award winning restaurants. Some are old favorites, like Dooky Chase’s soul food eatery and Emeril’s Restaurant (opened in 1990), while others are brand-new classics including Shaya, Cochon and Bayona. Eat, drink, dance, costume up, take in the arts, have fun at a fest, enjoy the parks, stroll the streets and repeat. That’s the way to do a visit to New Orleans proud! n SPRING 2019 | JOLI MAGAZINE

HOME DESIGN
Preplan Your Remodel In Spring
BY JULIE LAUGHTON
M
ost of the homes in Laguna Beach have been there since the beginning of the community’s first population explosion in the 1950s and ‘60s.The original cottages that were built in the ‘20s and ‘30s are also still there. One of the things that the majority of the homes have in common is that they are quaint beach cottages. Along with being quaint comes the fact that these are smaller spaces with less storage to offer. As designer and general contractor, one of the goals every year is to help my clients get their homes ready for spring and summer. If you are planning on entertaining a lot it’s important to get organized in your space. If you find that the space is tight and rooms are cramped while having guests, there is always a way to improve it. If you feel like you need to remodel, spring is a great time to plan and do your homework. Preplanning your remodel helps you organize your thoughts. Over the spring and summer months, you can observe how you are entertaining and

what your needs are. These are some questions to ask yourself before you start the process. • How often do I entertain? • Do I entertain large groups or small groups? • Is my space adequate or do I need to add space? • Should I add an outdoor kitchen area? • Is there room for an outdoor dining area? It’s always good to plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time before you start. The remodel for the home in these photos was started in the fall, worked on over the holidays and finished by the spring. The challenge for this home was that there was just one master bathroom and one tiny secondary bathroom for guests. This original secondary bathroom only had a tiny sink and toilet. Of course, that didn’t work for guests. In order to make it bigger, I had to slide the entry over to put a tub and shower. I used a miniature ball and claw tub with a shower attached to it that not only fit the space perfectly, but gave it charm. The secondary bathroom was so tiny that it was finished within inches of code require-
ments. The kitchen used to be half the size of what it is now. I took out the walls, widened it and used the original space that had an old shower in it back in the ‘20s and made it a pantry. Now the kitchen is a generous size to entertain guests and move around freely. I also removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room. When you walk in the front door, you enter the living room and you are steps from the dining room, which is now open to the kitchen. There is a Dutch door in the kitchen to the back patio and yard. This makes it easy to entertain guests indoors and outdoors. If you are thinking of remodeling, start your checklist in spring. This way you can have everything organized before you are ready to embark on updating your home. Doing your remodel right the first time in a seamless process will make the project much more enjoyable to go through.Your home is your castle and it should be designed and built to suit your individual needs. www.julielaughton.com.

THIS COMPLETELY UPGRADED AND RESTORED
1940’S ESTATE OVERLOOKING THE PACIFIC OFFERS ITS NEW OWNERS THE CHANCE TO OWN A PIECE OF SAN CLEMENTE HISTORY.
This resort-like residence is one of those spots you have to see in person to believe… because the pictures simply don’t do it justice. Designed by esteemed Laguna Beach architect Aubrey St. Clair in 1940—and recognized as one of San Clemente’s official historic landmarks—this alluring Hollywood Regency-style home was completely upgraded and restored over the years, while retaining its period style. The result? A perfect orchestration of a bluff-top setting offering unparalleled ocean, mountain and city views, modern amenities, and charming and spacious environs rife with exceptional touches. Think a multitude of antique chandeliers, along with a commissioned mural (“Series of Trees for Four Seasons”) designed and painted by a Disney imagineer Richard Dubuc.

THE TRULY UNIQUE GROUNDS! “Over the years, we’ve worked with arborists and landscapers to care for the many mature specimen trees the property is graced with,” says one of the current owners of the home, which is listed by Tracy Weintraub of Compass for $4.395 million. “Two of our favorite touches include creating a cactus garden with views of Saddleback mountains and a garden of plantings mentioned in Shakespeare plays. We also created a garden room off the courtyard patio that is special.”

An added bonus? This exquisite property enjoys the California Mills Tax Act, which results in highly desirable property taxes of only $6,000 per year and is offered at $4,395,000. “This is one of the most private, panoramic ocean-view estates I have ever seen,” says Weintraub. “The 1.5 acres of grounds is simply nothing less than spectacular, while the interior of the home radiates joyfulness via the ample sunlight streaming through the many glass windows and delightfully dancing in a variety of shades on the walls.”

William Frey Construction KITCHEN IS KEY FOR WELL DESIGNED HOME BY RITA GOLDBERG

illiam (Bill) Frey got his first taste of remodeling over 20 years ago. At the time, Bill was a sales manager for a fortune 500 consumer goods company. Bill and his wife Tina purchased a home in Dana Point with the intent to make improvements and sell it for a profit. Their plan worked and pretty soon they were busy acquiring and rehabbing real estate, following a sensible model of buying well priced homes in upscale neighborhoods. The acquisition formula was predicated on a combination of high land value and low asset value, according to Bill who zeroed in on neglected properties in Orange County’s tony coastal communities including Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and San Clemente. Bill found he had a passion and a talent for remodeling homes so he decided to obtain his General Contractor’s license and create William Frey Construction, which, in the ten years since its inception, has grown to one of the premiere home redesign companies in the area. Using state of the art, advanced construction techniques, a carefully curated selection of top of the line craftsmen, and his well honed visionary talents,William Frey delivers a finished project that consistently exceeds clients’ expectations. William Frey Construction has the ability to expertly remodel any area of your home but has built its reputation on kitchen remodeling. In fact, Bill is so adamant on the importance of a well designed kitchen as a home’s centerpiece, that he insists this vital space always be included in the redesign plan before undertaking a project. “In today’s lifestyle, the kitchen is typically the hub of a home,” says Bill. “The kitchen tends to be where family members and guests congregate. It is the homework environment, activity area, as well as the cooking and eating space. In the homes I create, the rest of the living space rotates around the kitchen.” Bill’s designs feature light infused open kitchens that connect to the family room and outdoor entertainment area. He also incorporates handsome oversized elements into his kitchen remodels. “I favor statement islands for function and drama,” tells Bill, who installs islands that can comfortably seat up to 18 people. His countertops are typically fabricated from granite, quartzite or quartz. “I also use 40 foot steel beams to anchor oversized sliding doors, which when retracted have the effect of opening up the entire house.” When contracting with William Frey, expect large picture windows strategically placed to showcase all views or vistas at hand. “Every view PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY FLOREZ AND COURTESTY OF WILLIAM FREY
should be captured in a well designed home,” Bill insists. As for the floors, large format, four foot square tiles of highly engineered porcelain, available in a seemingly endless variety of finishes, have been gaining popularity. Engineered veneer finishes are also being used for kitchen cabinetry, favored for the versatility and durability they offer.William Frey has seen a building trend that has been veering away from wood and stone finishes with nearly 80 percent of his clients opting for highly engineered advanced building materials that offer a vast array of aesthetic possibilities. High performance appliance brands
such as Thermador,Wolfe, and Sub-Zero, are de rigueur for today’s optimally designed kitchen. When it comes to redesigns,William Frey Construction implements cutting edge build concepts to create the dream spaces for its on-trend, discerning clientele, according to Bill. “We don’t just build the kitchen that our clients have always wanted, we build the kitchen that our clients will always want.”

Life Surrounded by Art RESTORATIVE EUROPEAN INFLUENCES EMBODY TUSCAN-RAISED ARTIST’S WORK BY SUSAN IRBY
H
aving grown up in Florence, Italy to parents who are prominent artists, Joni Herman was raised on art. Among her notoriety, her mother is named in the Almanac of Artists of Italy and was one of very few apprentices of the great master, Pietro Annigoni who was commissioned to do Queen Elizabeth’s portrait which appeared on British currency and postage stamps. Her father is a renowned artist and was a student of Signora Simi of the Art Academy of Florence in Italy. Shares Joni, “I grew up surrounded by art. There was no television where we lived, so we painted.” And paint she does! From murals in private residences, resorts, and commercial properties to works on canvas, studio art, and portraits, Joni’s work has touched the lives of many throughout Orange County and the world. “We lived in Florence until I was age 12, then we moved to upstate New York, New York City at one point in time, and I even lived in Morocco,” said Joni. One of her proudest opportunities came in the year 2003, when she was commissioned to paint an exhibit on the life of Linus Pauling, an American most notably recognized for his work in chemistry, having been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1954), and, as a peace activist received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962. “It was truly an honor and an unforgettable experience,” says Joni. Orange County has been her home for nearly 20 years. Having gained the majority of her clients by word-of-mouth and referral, throughout these years Joni has painted works in the homes of such celebrities as Steven Spielberg, Kenny G, Jim Rome, and jeweler to the stars, Neil Lane. “Part of art is the relationship and understanding clients,” adds Joni, “I love connecting with people. Expressing their vision through the art is essential.” Keeping the realization that her paintings will continue to inspire the life of the person she is creating it for, Joni takes her work to a deeper level and strives to discover the

passions of the people who commission her to paint for them. “It’s not about me,” shares Joni. “It’s about the people that hire me and their knowing that they are getting an artist’s commitment to uncovering what moves their heart through what I create for them, with them.” From living in Tuscany, many of Joni’s paintings reflect dramatic scenery such as the Italian Riviera, Mediterranean Sea sides, and European countrysides. An element of talent that shines in much of her work is her grace with brush strokes in creating the Trompe L’Oeil look and feel which resurfaced during the Renaissance and Baroque eras and is definitive of a three-dimensional style seen in the churches and palaces of Old-World Europe. Joni’s style exudes beyond three-dimensional work to include art deco, gold leaf, textured plaster, faux finishes, and hand-painted oils. When asked about her greatest influences, Joni cites the works of Van Gogh. “Van Gogh represents the purpose of art which is the love of people,” says Joni. “I traveled to Amsterdam to study his work and feel that connection to people.”When asked about new goals for her work, Joni shares that while she will always paint murals, her focus is more towards working on canvas and in doing portraits. Joni’s love for people extends especially to youths. She founded a non-profit organization called Harts United. “I am very excited to work with young people,” expresses Joni. “Many are referred to as ‘at-risk’ and find themselves getting into trouble. Through art, I seek to help them connect and feel a sense of purpose and to find a new way of expressing themselves, in a healthier, more fulfilling way.” Joni sees the art created by the youths as a way for them to mend relationships and feel that there is a place for them in the world through empowerment, acceptance, understanding and growth. When she is not painting, Joni nurtures her creative senses in the kitchen cooking up delicious dishes and relaxing in her garden where, according to her, she has a “ridiculous amount of flowers.” And, lending to her passion for founding Harts United, Joni enjoys working with children and animals. t is a fact of life; we are all getting older, not younger.Yet, for many, the goal is to feel and look younger than our true age as we live our lives day to day, no matter our age. In the land of surfboards and bikinis, that’s never been more true. The desire to stay youthful is ever present amongst the sunshine, ocean waves and fashions. Southern California based Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center is at the forefront of anti-aging technology and services. Highly recognized as a medical spa, many may ask “What is a medical spa?” A visit to a traditional spa encompasses luxurious treatments such as facials, massage, and overall body treatments that can include mud baths, hot stone therapy, and often sea salt scrubs. A medical spa, such as the Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center (BHRC), takes the traditional spa to another level under the supervision of a physician and using the most modern techniques and technologies to help stave off or reduce the impact of aging. Treatments include utilizing high-grade skin care products and advanced techniques to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, skin laxity and extend to laser hair removal treatments, vein, scar and stretch mark therapy among other beautifying and anti-aging treatments. Medical spas focus on using products that achieve a deeper penetration than overthe-counter products can provide and yet avoid surgical anti-aging procedures. Some of the most popular services available are those of microdermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing, collagen induction therapy, medical grade peels and among the most innovative of treatments, skin cell therapy. For over 10 years, Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center has been highly praised for its wellness transformation and results-driven Age Management technologies to include pioneering a proprietary hormone therapy program and advanced level of service to the wellness and aesthetics industries. Celebrities and media personalities give high praise to the BHRC for successful results from the hormone therapy program, customized Age Management regimes, the latest in technologies and perhaps even most important, their team of industry professionals. Each center offers board certified experts and staff utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and as one would anticipate, the highest level and quality of products and services. One of the latest and most advanced technologies is that of regenerative medicine using the body’s natural “building blocks,” Mesenchymal stem cells. Biologically “young” Mesenchymal stem cells are derived from what’s called the Wharton’s Jelly

Nail deficiencies, skin health, circulation, fungus identifiers, and foot alignment are expertly assessed before the pedicure begins. “In my 34 years of practice in Newport Beach, I have seen thousands of patients (over 50% of those who have walked into my office) afflicted with discolored or irregular toenails,

HEALTH, WELLNESS & BEAUTY resulting from fungal contraction,” begins Dr. Roth, as he outlays the only known treatment plan (which he personally invented) to once and for all – rid patients of this unsightly condition. Most doctors convince patients that there is nothing to be done about nail fungus. Dr. Roth knows better and, to the benefit of thousands of his patients, has been able to cosmetically correct the condition (usually in three to six months). If you are wondering how the treatment works, Dr. Roth happily walks patients through each step of his effective treatment for fungal infections that leave the majority of doctors stumped. The proprietary program starts with a unique laser treatment and the use of specialty tools to redefine the nail. This is followed by a protocol of in-house compounded, specially developed topical solutions. Finally, a unique blend of vitamins, supplements and oral medicines is prescribed to promote optimal regrowth of healthy nails. The process works and the end result enables patients to finally put their best and beautiful foot forward! “I want patients everywhere to have the opportunity for this kind of foot health,” says Dr. Roth, who is looking to use the Newport Beach flagship PedSpa™ as a model for the launch of future Concierge Podiatry & Spa locations. Dr. Roth cares about foot health. His genuine passion for this profession is further evidenced by his proprietary custom line of high-heeled orthotics he specifically developed to meet the needs of his female patients. If at this point you are thinking that Dr. Roth is a genius inventor, worthy of a coveted deal with Shark Tank, you are right. However, he is much more. His medical training has gifted him with surgical skills that are rarely evident in the podiatric profession. He trained in foot and ankle surgery at Mt. Sinai Hospital of Chicago with world-renowned podiatrist Dr. Lowell Scott Weil Sr. His foot and ankle care skills are so advanced that he even saved a patient from amputation with a sophisticated and delicate surgical procedure. It is not unusual for patients who have endured multiple unsuccessful surgeries to finally be healed at the hands of Dr. Roth. He has the distinction of being the Founding Chairman of Podiatric Surgery at Hoag Hospital of Newport Beach and was the first podiatrist awarded full orthopedic privileges for foot and ankle surgery at Hoag Hospital. With such impressive credentials, it’s not surprising that Dr. Roth has created a foot care model - The CPS OC Five-Point Ped-i-cure™ foot examination available at Concierge Podiatry & Spa
of Newport Beach - that sets a new standard of care, offering a long awaited option for ensuring beautiful, healthy feet.

Dr. Grazer is a fifth-generation native Californian, fourth-generation California physician, and second-generation board-certified Newport Beach plastic surgeon. His clientele includes high-profile models and international celebrities who, by nature of their profession, are under the constant scrutiny of the public. His dedication to detail has provided Dr. Grazer with a myriad of loyal and satisfied customers of all ages (including many fourth-generation patients) who praise his ability to achieve a natural appearance through his procedures. He has also been named as one of the Top Doctors by the Orange County Medical Association every year since 2015. “I do a number of mommy makeovers, Brazilian buttock lifts, facial rejuvenations, breast augmentations, breast revisions and many high definition liposuction procedures,” said Grazer. “It’s (plastic surgery) interesting because the cases are always different. People are more savvy now with plastic surgery, and they want to look natural and keep looking their best.”

Dr. Grazer is the past President of the Orange County Plastic Surgery Association and an assistant clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at UCI. His success with high profile clients and his skill as a plastic surgeon have led him to being featured on countless television and print media appearances, including Discovery Channel, MTV, Fox News, Fox Coast to Coast, NBC News, Dusseldorf Times, Fitness Magazine, Ladies Home Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, and Elle. He is an FAA Aeromedical Examiner performing FAA medical exams for pilots. He himself is a pilot with over 6,000 hours of flight time, is also a flight instructor, and was a finalist in NASA’s astronaut selection process. Dr. Grazer received his B.S. and B.A. from Tulane University. He also received both a Master of Science in Anatomy and a Master of Public Health at Tulane. While at Tulane University, he worked with Dr. Louis J. Ignarro, Nobel Prize Laureate 1998, and authored a first name paper with him. Dr. Grazer attended LSU Medical School,Tulane University for general surgery, Penn State for plastic surgery, and University of Pittsburg for micro-surgery. He ultimately came back to Orange County to go into practice with his father. Dr. Grazer’s father (Fred M. Grazer, MD) was the first full-time plastic surgeon in Newport Beach fifty years ago who is credited for introducing liposuction to the US in 1982. His father popularized the first tummy tucks, and by combining tummy tucks with liposuction, his father modernized body contouring as we know it today. “Dad passed away 16 years ago,” said Dr. Grazer, “but if he was still with us, he would be 92 and still working in the office because he loved plastic surgery.” When considering a plastic surgery procedure, it is easy to get caught up in price shopping and bargain hunting. Dr. Grazer cautions against selecting the less expensive route by choosing non-board certified practitioners and clinics. Looking for doctors who are actually certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery is important to get the optimal results. Consumers can go to the American Board of Plastic Surgery site at www.abplasticsurgery.org to see if a doctor is Board Certified in Plastic Surgery. Dr. Grazer also specializes in the volumizing

Injection of Radiesse ® can help reduce the appearance of smile lines, marionette lines, corners of the mouth lines, pre-jowl folds and chin wrinkles. Dr. Grazer enjoys the daily challenges of plastic surgery and helping his patients live happier, more self-confident lives.
With a fervent belief in giving back, he spends much of his free time traveling to underserved areas to perform surgery on children who may not otherwise have access to treatment. Dr. Grazer says, “I enjoy plastic surgery because I have the ability to perform happy medicine, and whether reconstructive or aesthetic, it does make a difference in many people’s lives.”

Flowerkist Brings CBD Benefits to Beauty BY SHANA BLAIR
T
hese days, whether you’re loading up on organic goods at Mother’s Market, restocking on skincare essentials at Sephora, or just simply existing in 2019, there are three letters that are nearly impossible to ignore: CBD. It’s showing up everywhere, and in all the familiar haunts. From your local coffee shop latte to the beauty counter at Barney’s, this little cannabis plant component is creating big impacts in the way we experience food, skincare, pain relief and more. Amidst the CBD craze, society is gaining a mainstream education of the many health benefits this herbal remedy has to offer. To be clear, CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a chemical compound derived from the marijuana plant. But unlike THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana that gets you high, CBD comes from a different strand of the cannabis plant and is non psychoactive. So while you won’t be trippin’ and contemplating the meaning of life from the use of CBD, this wonder plant holds an array of impressive health and beauty benefits. A natural stress releaser, chronic pain reliever, anti-aging agent and inflammation reducer, CBD provides incredible wellness benefits. With all the researched backed goodness of this natural chemical compound, and all the various potential market applications to heal and improve the human condition, there is one major relevant industry that CBD hasn’t infiltrated. Until now. Introducing Flowerkist, an early to market, scientifically proven line of color cosmetics, skincare and wellness products that incorporate the groundbreaking topical benefits of cannabidiol. Founded by unique power couple, Stephanie and Barry Clark, these pioneers in the CBD infused

HEALTH, WELLNESS & BEAUTY cosmetic industry were early to spot the market void for cannabis use in color cosmetics such as blushes, bronzers, mascaras and lipsticks. And with all the supporting data that proves the aesthetic benefits of CBD’s topical use, from reducing acne, to cell renewal production, to reversing visible signs of aging, you can be high as a kite and still realize that the option of adding cannabis to your makeup routine is a no-brainer. With a company story as unique as its products, Flowerkist is the brainchild of Barry Clark, a Wall Street veteran with an impressive track record of taking companies public, and Stephanie Clark, a PTA superhero mom of triplets by day and a makeup alchemy wizard by night. The unlikely combination of skills, knowledge and power these two bring together parallels the exact concoction of high quality ingredients you’ll find in Flowerkist’s product line. Another secret sauce factor that separates Flowerkist products from other CBD products on the market is their high grade, patented skincare and makeup formula. Barry’s interesting line of work had led to some big time connections in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical space, including one particular contact - an esteemed product scientist who developed the chemical composition for a major, globally recognized skincare pharmaceutical company. An incredible resource for the two entrepreneurs, Barry and Stephanie were able to license the I.P. (intellectual property) and ingredient makeup from this pharmaceutical mastermind for Flowerkist’s own product development. And while we can’t mention which company this is, let’s just say there’s a good chance one of their many products is sitting on your bathroom counter right now. Beyond Flowerkist’s pharmaceutical grade cosmetic formula and the aesthetically pleasing properties CBD provides, you have Stephanie’s magical apothecarian creativity and innate ability to develop an astounding line of cosmetics that bring out one’s natural beauty from within. Pouring heart, soul and talent into anything she touches, Stephanie got her start in the cosmetic game by developing her own line of tinted lip balms infused with shea butter, mica minerals for color, essential oils, and cannabidiol. When she sampled her products at a cosmetic conference and received a recurring 10,000 per month order that day, she knew she was alchemizing in the right space. Today, Flowerkist has a lineup of cannabis infused cosmetic and wellness products designed to make you look and feel your best. While you can’t go wrong with their best selling Solace, a muscle and joint pain relief cream, their color
cosmetic line is what really sets Flowerkist apart as an industry leader in the pioneering beauty space.Their emerald jewel toned, pH balancing lipstick draws out a perfect shade of pink unique to every individual, like a mood ring for your lips. And their volumizing and lengthening mascara with a built in lash growth serum and cannabis oil nourishes and lengthens your lashes as it adds instant glamour to your makeup routine. Don’t miss their pressed powder trio palette - a universally perfect shade of bronzer, highlighter and blush - perfect for contouring, highlighting and achieving that sun kissed summer glow. While all of Flowerkist’s products are made to make you look and feel gorgeous from the outside, there’s a clear message that comes from their trailblazing founders: Stay on your path, believe in what you’re doing, put passion and soul into everything you create, and you won’t go wrong. Flowerkist is currently available on their website, www.flowerkist.com - Here’s to feeling and looking your absolute best, from the inside out.

INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE TREATS THE SOURCE BY RITA GOLDBERG
I
n the heart of Laguna Beach, overlooking the sparkling Pacific, lies a unique wellness facility that caters to patients seeking a wholistic and natural approach to their health concerns. While the concept of integrative medicine is hardly new (philosophies pool from ancient Chinese wisdoms) the prevalent shift of naturally based treatment protocols is creating a new standard of healthcare - and with good reason. An integrative and more natural approach to healing works. More patients are recognizing the value of treating the underlying cause of their symptoms, while less patients want to be medicated if there are better options. Founded by Dr. Gary & Lisa Arthur, doctors of Chiropractic and Naturopathic Medicine,

Health In Balance Integrative Medicine raises the bar with its offerings of integrative modalities to treat issues that range from uncomfortable ailments to chronic pain. The mission of Health in Balance is to change lives for the better and to give back to the community. The Dominguez-Roth Foundation is part of that vision. Founded by Dr. Marcela Dominguez and Julie Roth with it’s home at Health in Balance, the foundation seeks to provide financial assistance to patients in an integrative cancer therapy program. The foundation supports research and treatment for cancer and other health challenges through a more integrative therapeutic approach combining the best of conventional, natural, and alternative medical therapies to prevent and treat cancer.
For Dr. Arthur, the ability to make a comprehensive array of treatment options available for patients is highly personal and rooted in the commitment he made to healing after he lost his father to double pneumonia. Dr. Arthur was nine years old when his father passed at age 39. When as a young adult, Dr. Arthur suffered from his own health issues, he realized it was time to pursue his commitment to becoming a health practitioner. “I knew there had to be a way to resolve my symptoms but it became apparent that if I wanted answers I was going to have to find them myself,” tells Dr. Arthur whose healthcare training helped him understand how to deal with his own health problems. Health In Balance Integrative Medicine has an impressive staff of healthcare profession-
HEALTH, WELLNESS & BEAUTY als, including Medical Director Dr. Marcela Dominguez, a highly credentialed licensed family medicine physician, who practices Functional and Integrative Medicine alongside the traditional approach. She received her medical degree at the prestigious UCSD School of Medicine. Her residency training was at the UCI affiliated Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. The Health in Balance team also includes Jordan Martin, DC, Rachelle Rodriguez, FNP and a team of physiotherapists and massage therapists. The well rounded healthcare team ensures an array of treatments that integrates cutting-edge technologies with ancient healing wisdoms. Some of these being Stem Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine, IV Nutritional Therapy, Integrative Cancer Therapy, Chiropractic Kinesiology & Postural Correction, Nutritional Counseling, Applied Kinesiology, and Neuro-Emotional Technique for Mind-Body care.Through these therapies, the Health in Balance team treats all four systems of the body: structural, biochemical, emotional, and electromagnetic. “In the traditional medical community, doctors will typically treat an ailment with a pharmaceutical prescription, procedure, and/ or invasive surgery. In some cases the prescribed medicine merely masks the ailment and may pose side effect risks. Surgery always comes with risks and can result in scar tissue or be ineffective. Here, we dig deeper to determine what is really causing pain, discomfort or symptoms that are not quite right,” explains Dr. Arthur who has been practicing natural and chiropractic medicine for over 33 years. “We have the know-how to introduce interventions that speak to underlying causes often rooted in structural, emotional, biochemical and electromagnetic imbalances.” The scientifically sound approach to identifying health problems entails a complete analysis of each patient, using lab tests, MRI’s, neurological and orthopedic assessments, X-rays and postural range of motion evaluations. The exam also includes lengthy revealing dialogues pertaining to lifestyle and physical or emotional traumas. It is the process of this intensive exploration that often uncovers the true reason behind those plaguing symptoms. Case in Point: Dr. Arthur successfully treated a patient after determining that the complaints of knee pain and insomnia were both linked to an adrenal imbalance. With the introduction of supplements and adaptogens to chemically balance the patient’s levels and the appropriate structural treatments, the symptoms eventually abated. A physician using a conventional approach to healing would have most likely treated the knee
pain with pain medications and/or anti-inflammatories, and prescribed sleeping pills to help with the insomnia,” says Dr. Arthur. “When we are stressed out, our bodies release high levels of cortisol, which in turn causes inflammation and sleep challenges,” explains Dr. Arthur, who uses a simple lab tests to evaluate for chemical imbalances that can cause inflammation, sleeplessness, diminished sex drive, depression, anxiety and a range of symptoms.“ Cures for many of these symptoms are found right in nature, or, as in the case of Stem Cells, harvested from umbilical cords, naturally produced within our bodies. “The human body is brilliant and is made to heal itself,” says Dr. Arthur. Digestive health is another avenue that is given serious attention at Health In Balance. Food intolerances and blocked detoxification pathways can trigger symptoms ranging from stomach pain to severe depression, according to Dr. Dominguez.
“As a trained physician, I know there are medical situations that require traditional approaches but with complementary modalities available through an integrative approach I am able to deliver a better level of healthcare to my patients,” says Dr. Dominguez. “In many cases, drugs do not treat the underlying problem, while natural therapies can successfully target specific conditions.” IV Nutritional Therapy is a highly effective treatment for those with digestive issues, immune challenges, cancer, and other health challenges. IV therapy allows for 100% absorption of nutrients administered to provide the patients with the vitamins and minerals necessary for healing. The respected protocols offered at Health In Balance Integrative Medicine have effectively treated tens of thousands of ailments. The list of satisfied patients reads like a “Who’s Who” of notoriety and celebrity status. Patients include world champion boxer Ken Norton, industry mogul Lee Iacocca, NFL and NBA all stars, grammy winning rock stars, gold medal olympians and Hollywood A-listers. You don’t have to be famous to get the high level of health care offered at Health In Balance. Dr. Arthur and his team makes everyone who walks in feel like the only and most important patient, “Everyone is a VIP.” “I know, first hand, the frustration of having your medical concerns rashly dismissed,” says Dr. Arthur. “Here, total wellness and a healthy, active quality of life is our top priority.”

Shop Embrace Debra Corley Fashion SHOP EMBRACE RE-IMAGINES FASHION

JOLI MAGAZINE | SPRING 2019
B
orn out of necessity, fashion has always inspired a sense of personal confidence, style, and lifestyle. Elite brands like Burberry have significantly changed since they developed the gabardine fabric in 1879 for WWII officer’s clothing to protect them from the harsh weather. What was once developed as a war garment has been recreated and worn as a raincoat with a signature statement pattern strategically stamped in different places to create a fashion statement. We know that fashion is not only a means to an end, but a lifestyle. There’s a new fashion brand in Orange County that captures an enthusiastic lifestyle with a spirit of woman empowerment through statement garments. Shop Embrace is a fashion company that upcycles and re-imagines clothing and purses with the use of feathers, deer skin, and other embellishments. In the short time that Shop Embrace has been in business, it has created personalized fringe jackets for customers, upcycled its clients’ favorite bags and created new ones. Since each item is hand crafted in Laguna Niguel, every final creation is uniquely designed and no single pattern is ever the same. Shop Embrace also creates “fluff cuffs,” which are boot cuffs made out of feathers. The creative behind Shop Embrace is Debra Corley - a high-spirited, serial entrepreneur and creative. Although she’s always been high-spirited, she’s garnered her creative spirit through her hardships. “It was a way for me to escape. It was self soothing for me,” Corley shares. She’s struggled through domestic violence throughout her life - both growing up and in marriage. Corley explains that she found solace in continuously being creative no matter what. “It was the one thing they couldn’t take away from me.” Corley explains there’s another reason why she decided to take the plunge into investing in a second business. “At age 60, I don’t want people to think you have to dress a certain way or have a certain look,” said Corley. “I am creating one of a kind items that might be ‘out there,’ but you will feel empowered and look good.” She explains that the more she wore her clothing, the more conversations she had with people around her. Corley quickly came to realize that most women at her age would say, ‘I couldn’t wear that,’ or ‘I couldn’t start a business at my age.” She hopes that through this business, she will empower women to take the plunge into their own dream job and never give up. Shop Embrace was created with Creative Director and CEO of Studio Salty, Crystal Reed. After her political career of 9 years, a fashion design career, and some time in media, she’s moved

to California to start her own creative studio. In one year of operating her business full time, she’s co-hosted Orange County Fashion Week, recruited to direct a show on Amazon Prime, and shot many local models, bloggers, and businesses. She’s published in SD Voyager,The Female Gaze, and many other online spaces. Reed met Corley after she spoke at a panel about video creation at a conference and both have been inseparable ever since. “We never thought this is where we would be a year ago,” Reed explains. “Shop Embrace was truly born out of fandom. Everytime Debbie would go out and wear her upcycled clothing, people would ask us where they can buy the items. So, we had to create a way to give people what they wanted,” said Reed. Shop Embrace is just getting off the ground,
but has already walked in Orange County Fashion Week with LA fashion designer Melissa Pellone’s dresses on the runway, has appeared in local blogger’s Instagrams, and will be breaking in a San Clemente’s boutique soon. Corley is working on her upcoming Fall collection to carry to New York Fashion Week in September. “I can’t tell you exactly what’s going to happen once I’m with my feathers, but I know that whatever it is, it’s going to be wild,” Corley exclaims. “Who knew being creative would be my job one day. Never give up!”

hen I think of spring, one of the first things that comes to mind is white asparagus. So, for this dish I decided to do a cold preparation featuring both green and white asparagus to get the delicious flavor of asparagus without compromising the integrity of the vegetable with excessive heat. Plus, it looks pretty.
WHITE ASPARAGUS SALAD RECIPE (SERVES 2)
Ingredients 4 white asparagus stalks 3 green asparagus stalks 7 cherry tomatoes 2 oz. crumbled feta cheese 4 prosciutto chips 1 oz. toasted almonds 1 oz. red wine vinaigrette ½ oz. balsamic reduction Preparation To make the salad, first peel all of the asparagus starting 1 inch from the top all the way to the bottom. While peeling the asparagus, boil a large pot salted water. Once asparagus is peeled, drop the asparagus into the boiling water and cook for 1-2 minutes, until slightly cooked but still firm. Immediately place the cooked asparagus into ice water. This will help stop the cooking process and allow the green asparagus to maintain a bright green color. After the asparagus has been blanched and shocked, cut it on an angle into 1 inch pieces. To finish the salad, put the asparagus and tomatoes into a mixing bowl. Add the vinaigrette, a touch of salt and a pinch of black pepper. Gently toss everything. Then, transfer the vegetables to a serving dish. Garnish with the crumbled feta, toasted almonds, prosciutto chips and a drizzle of balsamic reduction. Prosciutto Chips Thinly slice the prosciutto. Lay the prosciutto in an even layer on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Cover with another piece of parchment paper, and place a baking sheet on top to weigh the prosciutto down. This will keep it from curling up during the cooking process. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 15 minutes. Red Wine Vinaigrette 2 cups red wine vinegar 1 quart canola oil 1 egg yolk 2 garlic cloves 1 shallot Kosher salt In a blender, add vinegar, egg yolk, shallot and garlic. Turn blender on high and slowly add canola oil until all is incorporated. Season with salt.

ou know the feeling you get when you walk into one of your favorite restaurants? It’s the anticipation of your favorite dish, the warm welcome you get from your server who already knows what you’re likely to order or the surety that you’re just going to have a good time. That’s how I felt walking into Corona del Mar’s newest culinary offering, aptly named, CdM, for the first time. Only open for a few months, CdM already feels like a well-established local favorite. That might be because it is the creation of Hollywood producer/director Joseph McGinty Nichol (McG) and restaurateur Jordan Otterbein, who both attended Corona del Mar High School, and are also the dynamic-duo behind the beloved A restaurant. Ah ha! Executive Chef Jonathan Blackford, who splits his time now between CdM and A, feels the familiarity in the room too. He admits that the restaurant is well positioned to open to great anticipation given the relationship to its culinary cousin down the street. However he also understands that can only last so long if the food isn’t good and the experience falls short. Once inside the beautifully renovated space, you feel like you’ve been let in on a secret. I’ll tell you the secret…the food is delicious. The menu is varied, plentiful, changes seasonally and is suitable for diners with different tastes. I recommend starting with the Duck Liver Pate, served with huckleberry gelee, fresh huckleberries, grilled bread and grape mustard. Not only is this the perfect beginning to your meal, you might want to get an extra one to bring home for breakfast the next morning! I did. The Veggie offerings can stand-alone as an appetizer, or as the perfect accompaniment to anything else on the menu. Of note are the Tempura Squash Blossoms and the Morels + Peas. Also, fair warning, there are big decisions to be made with regard to your main course. If you don’t have a hankering for something specific, you will have a tough time deciding between the Kentucky Fried Hen, Niman Ranch Pork Chop, Akaushi Skirt Steak, Alaskan Halibut, and other mouth watering choices. If you’re not up for a large entrée, try a smaller plate of Ahi Tartine or Japanese A5 Wagyu and pair it with Dirty Pasta (rigatoni, ground duck, sage, aromatics, ricotta salata), Oxtail Gemelli (braised oxtail, cherry tomoato, rapini, parmesean, lemon bread crumbs), or one of the pizzas.

NEWEST DINING HOT SPOT BY DENISE MOLNAR
Make sure before you begin, you peruse the wine and cocktail menu. They have a great variety of both. Do I need to mention dessert? Always order dessert. I’ll let you in on one more secret... Under Cdm, through a separate entrance, is a Speakeasy! It’s called, of course, Under Cdm. It’s a darling, little space reminiscent of the underground speakeasy’s of New York. You won’t find beer, wine, champagne or single liquor mixers. They exclusively serve handcrafted cocktails and offer
small plate snacks. It’s the perfect beginning, middle or end to your evening. Cdm is only open for dinner for the time being. They are planning on opening for brunch shortly, and hopefully lunch in the near future.

Dialogue With Sandi Wright-Cordes BENEFIT CHAIR, PHILHARMONIC HOUSE OF DESIGN
T
he Philharmonic House of Design has been generating funds to bring live music productions to primary and middle school aged children in our county for over 25 years. Each year, a magnificent home is selected and re-designed by a curated team of top designers. The result is a sterling example of all the latest look, on trend home features. This year, the stately 7200 square foot Hamptons-style Monarch Point manse on display features clean and simple elegance combined with dramatic pops of color to complement the natural views and vistas that abound from every vantage. In this issue, Sandi Wright Cordes, Benefit Chair, House of Design, brings insight and perspective into the process of implementing an event that will host up to 7,000 visitors, raise about $200,000 and bring the joy of music to more than 100,000 children. How did you become involved in the House of Design? It all began with the good fortune of attending school in a district with a strong in-school music education program. That background made it an easy choice, as a classroom teacher and later school administrator, to take advantage of opportunities for my students to participate in music education opportunities provided by the Philharmonic Society.Through the years, I had the opportunity to observe how these programs engaged and inspired children to make connections in ways words alone could not accomplish. Becoming a member of The Committees of the Philharmonic Society gave me the opportunity to work with others to see that students continue to have memorable experiences with music. How many designers participate and what is the design process like? This year we have fifteen design firms and 19 designers participating in the transformation process. In February, designers were invited to identify spaces of interest. A color palette was provided to ensure a flow of compatible color throughout design spaces. Our Design Team, made up of Design Chair Kim Weddon, and Design Advisors Frank Pitman and Wendy Ann Miller, reviewed the applications, selected participants and assigned design spaces. Our guests will

enjoy seeing newest trends and exciting ways to transform their own homes. Beautiful patterned wallpaper, bold colors, gold cork, art materials in the coffered ceilings, and intimate seating areas await our guests. Our Design Team tells us to “expect simple elegance with clean lines and beautiful pops of color!” What is your favorite part of this year’s house? From the beginning, I have been in awe of the glorious setting and the manner in which each room encompasses a beautiful view from every direction-- from unobstructed ocean views leading into the horizon, to sloping hills, draping trees in the garden pool area and the stately and welcoming courtyard garden. What a delight to see how designer installations so artfully compliment the unparalleled beauty of the outdoors to present the very essence of gracious living throughout this home.
Who do the proceeds from the House of Design benefit? All earnings from this event directly fund our nationally recognized youth music education programs offered to all Orange County public and private schools, elementary through high school, free of charge. These programs include youth concerts, in-school Music Mobile presentations and live music ensemble performances for primary grades through middle school. This past year, our music programs reached more than 115,000 students.

There are over 400,000 children in our country’s foster care system and one of eight American children is a confirmed victim of neglect or abuse. With statistics like these, it’s not surprising that CASA supporters broke all previous giving records to generate over $1.3 million to this worthwhile cause. Stylish Guys THE MEN’S GROOMING PRODUCTS AND SELF CARE INDUSTRY IS EXPERIENCING PHENOMENAL GROWTH AND SHOWS NO SIGNS OF SLOWING DOWN ANYTIME SOON. BY BETH FHANER
If you’ve noticed a plethora of skin care and hair care products geared towards men available through online retail platforms or in some of your favorite brick-and-mortar stores lately, you’re not alone. The growing industry of men’s grooming products and self care services is booming, and a recent report conducted by Allied Market Research predicted the global men’s personal care market will top $166 billion by 2022.

F
rom beauty services that were once traditionally marketed to women to upscale barber shops to skin care and hair care lines created specifically for guys, the industry is catering to the modern man who wants to look and feel good. Additionally, men are more health conscious these days and they also want to take steps against anti-aging, which all factors into the current trend of men’s grooming seeing exponential growth. Global and social media influences, along with a change in lifestyle and rise in disposable income have all contributed to the expansion of the men’s personal care market. Here, we take a look at some of the niche grooming products and self care services that are available for stylish men in Orange County.
Shop ‘Til You Drop The Ulta Beauty store at Fashion Island carries an array of men’s grooming products that go well beyond the traditional men’s shaving, soap, and deodorant products, including niche skin care and hair care lines and men’s fragrance. The popular U.S. retailer became serious about men’s grooming products several years ago when they added men’s sections to their stores nationwide, and the demand for self care products catering to ‘guys only’ continues to increase. Grooming brands such as Oars + Alps, House 99 by David Beckham, Baxter of California, American Crew, Billy Jealousy, and Every Man Jack, among many others, line the shelves at Ulta’s men’s boutique at the Fashion Island location, in addition to being available through the retailer’s online site. “Men’s grooming products have been part of our assortment for a number of years, and interest continues to grow thanks to emerging brands making the category more accessible and more mainstream,” says Paul Desiderioscioli,VP of Merchandising at Ulta Beauty. “Products made specifically for men’s needs have expanded well beyond shaving products to hair care and skin care regimens.” www.ultabeauty.com
Make it a Spa Day Men can also indulge in a variety of posh spa treatments and facials at some of Orange County’s most luxurious hotels, including The Spa at Fashion Island Hotel and the Spa Montage at Montage Laguna Beach. At The Spa at Fashion Island Hotel, guys can get pampered with a Gentleman’s Facial that is specifically designed with products tailored for a gentleman’s complexion. April Eldridge, spa director for The Spa at Fashion Island Hotel, notes that the resort offers many services for men. “Our most popular services for men are the HydraFacial and Deep Tissue Sports massage,” she says. “Men tend to prefer more active spa treatments.” Eldridge also explains that she’s seen an increase in more men scheduling facial appointments. “Our most popular skin care product for men is the Biocellulose Restorative masque by SkinCeuticals,” she says. “This soothing and hydrating masque uses ingredients such as hyaluronic acid to help boost collagen and elastin.” www.fashionislandhotel.com
Melissa McMahon, Spa director for Spa Montage at Montage Laguna Beach, comments that they’ve always had a healthy male clientele since they opened in 2003. “Our Spa Technologies skin care line is very popular with men, in particular the Anti-Fluid Gel which is great for post workouts and any sort of aches and pains; and the Eco Defense Daily Moisturizer which is lightweight,” she says. Among Spa Montage’s many services that cater to men is the Gentleman’s Hot Towel Treatment, a deluxe facial treatment which specifically addresses men’s skin and incorporates specialty massage techniques, steamed towels, hand, arm, neck and shoulder massage. “Men also enjoy our new
Valmont anti-aging facials and our more tactile services including the Coastal Shores Stone Massage,” adds McMahon. www.montagehotels.com
Looking Slick at The BYRD’s Nest Upscale barber shops have also become more prominent in recent years with the growing trend in men’s grooming, and for Chase Wilson, founder/owner of The BYRD’s Nest in Newport Beach and BYRD Hairdo Products, it all started with his love of the ocean and surfing.Wilson started surfing around the age of 12, competed as an amateur in high school and worked his way up to the big leagues on the World Qualifying Series. During this time, his family lived on the beach at 54th Street, considered the surf mecca of SoCal. “At the time, it was about expressing your style and creating an image for yourself as a professional surfer,” says Wilson. “I gravitated towards classic California vibes inspired by one of my favorite flicks,The Endless Summer. Style icons of that era like Mike Hynson and Robert August stood out to SPRING 2019 | JOLI MAGAZINE

me in a meaningful way versus the long hair/hippie surfer stereotype. No matter the occasion, their hair was always slicked and on point.” Wilson recalls that he got his first traditional fade haircut his sophomore year in high school, and from then on, he was hooked. He started using a bunch of different hair products, but none of them worked with his surfing routine, as some would sting his eyes when he hit the water and others would take a week to wash out. “That’s when I set out to create my own hair product that catered to my lifestyle,” explains Wilson. “It was a wax-based pomade that I could wear in and out of the water and slick it back post surf. That was the birth of BYRD’s Classic Pomade…it’s really the product that started it all.” Competitive surfing taught Wilson discipline, true grit and to always keep a positive mental attitude, which is essential as a business owner/entrepreneur. “We affectionately nicknamed our first flagship The BYRD’s Nest,” says Wilson. “It serves as a creative hub for the brand and also a cool spot to get a great haircut or shave. It’s become our sanctuary to promote the culture behind the brand and product.” Wilson cites BYRD’s new Clay Pomade as a favorite in his routine lately. “It gives great hold and leaves behind an ultra-matte finish so you get that put-together-but-still-casual look,” he says. For hotter months, he recommends a good Face Wash to fend off sweat and oil. With an emphasis on keeping routines simple,Wilson explains that they focus on the daily essentials at BYRD while always keeping in mind the dude who lives by the mantra of ‘work first, play later.’Their products make it easy to transition from beach to work, morning to night.

“No matter your profession or passion, I think the common link with fans of the BYRD brand is that they all strive to be their personal best,” notes Wilson. “They understand that a first impression is priceless and take the steps necessary to make a lasting one. Looking slick is the philosophy we all share and BYRD’s arsenal of grooming products support that quest.” BYRD’s grooming products are available in store at Target or online at www.byrdhair.com.
