partners| johnna coztee + william harvell Relief micro proposes an exploration into the advantages and applications of additive manufacturing in housing. We saw this challenge as an opportunity to solve the homeless population issue within downtown knoxville while also developing a system to engage a number of marginalized “homeless” people : refugees, military, students, etc.

By

engaging the public on the ground level with a market and shops, the residents would be able to integrate back into society without the stain of being an other. And through material recycling and manipulation, the proposal was verified leed platinum and won 1st place by AIA in our integration semester as well 2nd place by Brewer Ingram

ghost pavilion studio | spring 2015 program | scholar pavilion site | uva campus lawn The ghost pavilion manifests as a space for students and educators to not only engage one another academically but to also take part in the dialogue between Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. The two sit directly in front of one another, thus creating a formal transformation between Jefferson’s intellectual radiance and Washington’s stoic leadership. The pavilion comprises of a public reading room in the lowest level with an accompanying reading garden, while the access to the remainder upper levels go from semi-public for seminar spaces and private for the Jefferson scholar’s dwelling. north section

ascend studio | fall 2015 program | side table material | red heart + birch The project experimented with edge gluing red heart boards to create a light weight, disassemble side table. Creating a pattern by spacing birch strips in between the red heart pieces inspired the recessed leg attachments so to emphasis the differences in wood through funcitions. Making the birch strips appear to extend as legs – while hiding the joints – allowed the legs to be more playful by shifting along the center of the table and taper as it lightly meets the ground. The final piece remains light and lean as well as easily transportable as the legs are able to snuggly remain attached or removed if neccessry to save space when transporting
