IFRA UK Fragrance Forum 2015

elcome to IFRA United Kingdom’s Fragrance Forum 2015.

This is our fifth Fragrance Forum and we are delighted to be returning to The Royal Society in a larger venue to allow more guests and members to attend what has become such a keenly anticipated annual occasion in the perfumery calendar.

Today we take the theme: Our Fragrant World.

IFRA UK’s members develop fragrances that enhance well-being and the enjoyment of life.

As this year is the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, we begin the day’s proceedings with a historical perspective with the ‘History of Scent’.

We then go on to discover more about ‘Scent and the Senses’ in a session that will look at the mood effects of particular aromas and how fragrance influences the behaviour of shoppers.

Finally, in a session we’ve called ‘Talking Scents’, we will explore forgotten fragrance storytelling and discover a message in a bottle, smelling the botanicals that make up, not a fragrance, but a gin.

We have invited a number of eminent speakers comprising some distinguished academics, business people and writers. We are enormously grateful to all of them and to those chairmen of the various sessions.

Session Chairs Jonathan Gray, Chairman of IFRA UK Jonathan has over 25 years’ experience in the fragrance and flavour industry, with 18 of these spent at Mane where he is Managing Director of Mane UK. His first degree was from Queen Elizabeth College, University of London in Food Science & Physiology. He also holds a PGCE from Leicester University and a Certificate in Business Administration from Warwick Business School.

Jonathan taught outdoor pursuits and Biology before moving into sales. After a role in flavour sales at PFW, he moved to work in fragrance at Harmann & Reimer, joining Mane in 1994.

Alan Osbiston, IFRA UK Technical Chairman Alan has worked for CPL Aromas for 27 years, currently as its Director of Product Safety & Compliance.

Joining the fragrance industry in 1972 and initially working in analyst roles for BBA and Yardley, he moved to Fragrance Oils (International) Ltd in 1984 as Chief Chemist, and it was here that he expanded his knowledge of applications and began to acquire perfumery skills.

Alan joined CPL Aromas in 1988 as Technical Manager and has played key roles as a perfumer, in the development of quality systems, regulatory affairs and projects concerning acquisitions and software systems Since 2002 he has been Chairman of IFRA UK’s technical committee and is currently a member of the IFRA EU Technical Committee.

Other committee roles have included: the former EFFA (European Fragrance & Flavour Association) Fragrance Experts group; the EFFA REACH task force and IFRA/IOFI Hazard Communication Working Group (which became the GHS TF); and CTPA Scientific Advisory Group where he was the fragrance expert. Alan is currently a member of the IFRA EU Detergents and Indoor Air TF and was recently elected to the newly formed IFRA RAAC (Regulatory Affairs and Advocacy Committee), which monitors and actions industry response to globally emerging regulations.

Alice Lascelles, Journalist and Author Alice Lascelles is one of the country’s leading drinks writers and a regular contributor to the Financial Times. She has also been a drinks columnist for The Times, The Sunday Times, Time Out and co-founded the award-winning magazine for bartenders and sommeliers, Imbibe.

She published her authorial debut, Ten Cocktails: The Art of Convivial Drinking (Saltyard 2015), earlier this year. When she’s not busy tasting hard liquor, Alice is also a great perfumery enthusiast, and has written about scent on a number of occasions for titles including the FT and Vice. www.alicelascelles.com

Speakers Dr Alex Rhys-Taylor - Goldsmiths, University of London Dr Alex Rhys-Taylor is a sociologist with a focus on the senses, cities, multiculture and class, Alex lectures at Goldsmiths University and is part of The Centre for Urban and Community Research (CUCR).

Alex’s forthcoming book Food and Multiculture: A Sensory Ethnography of London will be published later this year by Bloomsbury.

Jonathan Reinarz is Professor of the History of Medicine at the University of Birmingham, where he has worked for the past 15 years. He has served as Director of the University’s History of Medicine Unit since 2009. His research focuses on the history of medical institutions, including hospitals, workhouses and asylums, and is on the Executive Board of the International Network for the History of Hospitals. He is also Secretary of the European Association for the History of Medicine and Health.

He has written and edited a number of books on the history of medicine, but his interests extend much further, not least to the social and economic history of alcohol, the subject of his PhD thesis (1998). He is currently writing a history of medical education, but has also recently worked on the history of the senses, and is the author of Past Scents: Historical Perspectives on Smell (Univ. of Illinois Press, 2014).

Dr Mark Moss – University of Northumbria

Mark Moss studied Applied Chemistry and worked for ten years in the tanning industry before returning to education at Northumbria University in 1992 to study Psychology. He gained a first class honours degree in 1995 and won the British Psychological Society’s award for the best undergraduate project. His work, entitled “Can oxygen enhance memory?” was also published in the journal Psychopharmacology and was the foundation for his PhD which he was awarded in 1999.

Joining the academic team at Northumbria, Mark’s research interests diversified and he was introduced to the sphere of essential oils by an undergraduate in 2002; a collaboration that led to his first paper in the area in 2003.

He says: “I maintained an interest in the area with a particular interest in Rosemary, and have published a number of experimental studies in the area, co-authored with undergraduate or postgraduate students.

My academic journey has seen me rise to Head of Department of Psychology at Northumbria, a role I took on some seven years ago, and one that leaves my time for active research to be somewhat limited. When I find time, the area of aromas and their impact on human behaviour remains a main focus of my attention”.

Speakers Mr Tim Nancholas - Strategic Insight Director, Kantar Worldpanel

Tim has over 25 years’ experience in the health & beauty industry working for Kantar Worldpanel and its previous guises.

For most of this time, he has been in the Client Service area supporting beauty, toiletry and healthcare clients. There was a real lack of buyer research into the cosmetics and particularly the fragrance area so Tim launched Beauty Panel to provide shopper insights into these markets – this was extended by the addition of the beauty treatments market in 2010.

Before Kantar, Tim worked at Colgate Palmolive and can boast nearly 30 years in the industry.

Tim lives in Essex and has a patient wife and two daughters.

Lizzie Ostrom (known publically as Odette Toilette) has for the past five years been changing the way we think about scent through her cult events. Ranging from sniffable history talks to perfumed tours of art galleries, Odette brings an intelligence and sense of fun to discovering the sense of smell.

Lizzie has designed and hosted press and customer experiences for brands, and has spoken at cultural institutions including a Greek perfume symposium at The British Museum and the Scent of Space with the Royal Observatory Greenwich, as well as events with The Wellcome Collection, The Natural History Museum, Somerset House, and the Museum of London. This summer she is one of the team for the Tate Sensorium, which will invite visitors to taste, smell, touch and hear artworks in an immersive exhibition.

She has previously spoken at the IFRA UK Fragrance Forum where she introduced a project called Penning Perfumes – a project inspiring poets and perfumers to draw creative inspiration from one another. In October 2015, Lizzie’s first book, Perfume: A Century of Scent, will be published by Hutchinson.

Bob Fowkes – Co-founder and Bob Fowkes has experience in brand development and innovation roles with United Distilleries (now Diageo) and Allied Domecq spanning over Director, Brockmans Gin 20 years. Further, he has worked extensively for a decade as a brand development consultant with blue chip clients such as Nestle, Danone, Yoplait, B&Q, Kellogg’s, Weight Watchers and Pernod Ricard. He has experience of most consumer categories and has run a vast range of brand development projects in markets around the world.

Together with three like-minded colleagues, he invented Brockmans Gin – a 40% ABV super-premium gin that incorporates botanicals and berries.

The top note of coriander has an aromatic, sage and orange flavour, which marries beautifully with the softer, more rounded harmonies of blueberries and blackberries and the middle note created by juniper berries from Tuscany. This inspired combination, together with the dry, bitter sweet peel of Valencian oranges, elongates the deeper tones to give Brockmans an intensely smooth taste.

Bob and his colleagues first introduced Brockmans Gin in London in 2009 and the brand now sells widely across the UK , Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg and other parts of Europe as well as Norway, Canada and the USA.
