15th to 23rd February 2014 1000 years ago when York was under Viking rule, great celebrations and festivities took place in February called ‘Jolablot’ to herald the coming of spring and the survival of winter hardships. These celebrations were long forgotten until the 1980s when York Archaeological Trust revived Jolablot, creating the biggest Viking Festival in Great Britain. Now celebrating its 30th year, the JORVIK Viking Festival is bigger than ever, involving partners from across Yorkshire, driving over 40,000 visitors to the city of York, Viking re-enactors from across Europe and media interest from around the world.

Friday 15th November 2013 Elizabeth of York, Tudor Queen, with Alison Weir 7:30pm | Barley Hall | Adult £12, conc £10 YAT is very proud to welcome historian Alison Weir to Barley Hall this autumn. Alison will be talking about her brand new biography of Elizabeth of York, one of England’s lost Queens Regnant. Elizabeth, the heiress of the House of York, was daughter to Edward IV and sister to the Princes in the Tower. Two kings vied for her hand: her uncle, Richard III, who had had her declared a bastard, and the future Henry VII, the first Tudor sovereign; their marriage united the warring Houses of Lancaster and York. Elizabeth was the mother of Henry VIII and grandmother of Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I. She was also the ancestress of every English monarch since 1509, every Scots monarch since 1513, and every British monarch since
1603, including the present Queen, Elizabeth II. Alison’s book will reveal new insights into her fascinating and often poignant story, and some surprising insights gained from her research. With light refreshments, music and a chance to buy copies of Alison’s books. Pre-booking essential: 01904 615505.
