The Richard III Experience at Monk Bar and The Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar
The JORVIK Group is proud to announce the addition of another venue to our family of attractions: the Richard III Experience at Monk Bar. This stunning medieval gatehouse is now home to a new exhibition telling the story of England’s most famous medieval king: Richard III. School groups visiting Monk Bar can learn all about the turbulent times in which he lived with our Medieval Battles and Sieges workshop, included in your visit. Groups can also link their visit with a trip to the Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar, which tells the story of Richard’s greatest enemy, Henry Tudor. Included in the visit to this attraction is our Crime and Punishment workshop, which explores justice in the city, as well as the Tudors’ methods for controlling their rebellious subjects in the north. Joint admission to these new exhibitions is £6.50 per child and £7.50 per teacher; one teacher goes free with every 6 children booked. Each of these visits can be adapted to suit Key Stages 1 – 3. More options to make your visit to York even more memorable include our new Medieval Day (£8 per child and £9 per teacher), with a visit to both Bars and Barley Hall, our medieval townhouse, plus a guided walk across the medieval city. For more details of these and other new workshop offers, available from September 2014, please call our reservations department on 01904 615505.
Roman Burial Loan Box
A new addition to our ever-popular loan box service comes in the form of our Roman Burial loan box, which gives you the opportunity to re-enact the burial of a wealthy Roman Briton. Choose from a selection of replica artefacts to give him a burial befitting his importance, and to equip him for his journey to the afterlife. Your choices will need to be based on Roman religious beliefs and requirements: get the details wrong and his unhappy shade could wander the banks of the River Styx for a hundred years! All of the elements included in the box are based on archaeological evidence, much of which was uncovered during the recent Hungate dig in York: amazing Roman finds from this dig can still be seen in the Looking Back at Hungate exhibition at our DIG attraction.
