Summer Schools
East Yorkshire is home to one of the richest and best-preserved prehistoric landscapes in the UK. The Yorkshire Wolds have hillforts, barrows, and standing stones, and have yielded up such archaeological treasures as chariot burials, pottery and the mysterious Folkton Drums. In summer 2015, York Archaeological Trust invites you to explore this heritage, either with a free visit to Octon in the Wolds or through our Summer Schools scheme. A half-day at Octon will allow your class to explore a landscape shaped by our prehistoric and medieval ancestors. With earthworks, a deserted village and an ancient cruck-built farmhouse all on site, young learners can apply archaeological techniques and their imaginations to investigate how life in Octon has changed over the centuries. If you are unable to visit, schools within a 50-mile radius of York can enjoy a one- or two-day Summer School with our archaeologists, who will bring the Prehistoric Wolds to life in your classroom with a range of resources and fun activities. To find out more call Frances Bennett, Education Officer, on 01904 615508, or visit www.thejorvikgroup.com/education and see our brilliant KS 1 – 3 Learning Programme.
New for 2015!
Prehistory Loan Boxes
We have now expanded our ever-popular loan box service to cover British Prehistory. Our boxes are full of resources that will inspire and entertain your class, with tools, traditional materials, and artefacts from prehistoric craft and ritual. They also include an archaeological site modelling kit, so that your learners will get a feel for the historic landscape to which these objects belong.
Virtual Outreach for Your Class
Our virtual outreach ‘Ask the Archaeologist’ service is increasingly in demand by teachers wishing to bring prehistory expertise into their classroom via Skype. Our talented DIG staff have devised a range of new tactics for illustrating key prehistory themes for young learners, and have even gone so far as to build models of barrows and houses of the sort found in prehistoric Yorkshire! A virtual outreach session can be a lively and entertaining introduction to this period, and costs just £35. For more information and to book a session, call our reservations department on 01904 615505.
