JULY Marston Moor: For the Liberties of All England! Sunday 7th July | 10:30 | WALK
Meet at the monument on Long Marston/Tockwith Road YO26 7PL £4 adults, £3 conc Join our resident musketeer, Battlefield Historian Russell Marwood on a visit to this most English of Civil War battle sites. Although the landscape has seen many changes in the intervening 369 years, today’s farming methods have preserved much of the battleground topography thus giving a fair representation of the landscape all those years ago. The walk on 7th July is a pre-cursor for the annual Memorial March undertaken by the Sealed Knot re-enactment Society. The parade leaves Long Marston at 2.30pm and halts at the memorial for a short service before continuing on to Tockwith. All are welcome to attend. Please wear appropriate footwear and be aware that you will be required to walk along unsurfaced roads and tracks. This walk takes place on private land so please be aware that farming machinery is in use and take care not to obstruct gates and access points with vehicles. The Battles of Myton Moor & Boroughbridge: Mayor, Mitre & Massacre Sunday 14th July | 14:30 | WALK
Meet opposite the Black Bull Inn, Boroughbridge YO51 9NR £4 adults, £3 conc Situated on the west bank of the River Swale, this secluded landscape has a feeling of remoteness which makes it an ideal location for a battlefield walk. Today the area has been totally transformed as the floodplain meadows have been drained and the whole landscape enclosed by hedges. Come along for a pleasant stroll to explore the area thought to have been the location for the confrontation between a Scottish army, fresh from their Bannockburn victory and an English army, led by York’s Archbishop and Mayor in 1319. Afterwards, visit the site of the 1322 Battle of Boroughbridge where the Earl of Hereford met an untimely end and the longbow played its first big part against the mounted knight on English soil. Please be aware that you will be required to drive to a further location before the tour begins. The Myton part of the tour will be a 2.3 mile walk along grassed tracks and cultivated farmland; please wear appropriate footwear. Pre-booking advised: 01904 615505
Malton: Derventio & Beyond!

Meet outside the main entrance of The Old Lodge hotel, Old Maltongate, Malton YO17 7EG £4 adult, £3 conc For this walk team up with Nigel Copsey, Stonemason, Buildings Conservator and Research Associate of the Department of Archaeology at York University, on a stroll through the Roman town of Derventio, or as we know it now, Malton. On your journey you will have a chance to look at the town’s fascinating architectural history, as well as discovering more about Roman forts, medieval castles, and 17th century sieges. Oliver Cromwell’s role in our history is well known. In life, be it Yeoman farmer, soldier or Lord Protector, he was a strong-willed person who was always in control of his destiny. In death he sought peace but he, or at least part of him, was not to rest for over 300 years. Depart from Micklegate Bar Museum, York YO1 6JX £4 adults, £3 conc York has proudly sat behind its stone defences since Roman times. To this day, substantial forms of the city’s defences still remain and, indeed, York has more miles of intact wall than any other city in England. So whether you are a local or just visiting our fine city, come along for a walk that stretches back through 2000 years of our history; from its early days as a Roman fort to the role of Micklegate Bar in welcoming visiting monarchs, most recently Queen Elizabeth II in 2012. Occasionally city walls are closed at short notice due to bad weather but the walk will take place using a suitable alternative route in this case. Meet beside the Constantine statue outside York Minster YO1 7HL £4 adult, £3 conc Join up with York Archaeological Trust’s Field Officer Kurt Hunter-Mann and Battlefield Historian Russell Marwood, on a walk aimed at bringing to life York’s Roman legacy. From its beginnings as a fortress between the banks of the Ouse and the Foss, the small settlement grew to become the leading Roman
military and civilian settlement of the North. During this 90 minute walk Kurt and Russell will shed light on some of the most interesting Roman archaeological discoveries unearthed by York Archaeological Trust over the past 40 years. Visitors are able to obtain entry to York’s Roman Bath Museum for a discounted price of £2 per person on 30th July, payable to the museum, on presentation of their walk ticket. The Battle of Byland: Black Douglas, Boulders & Bombers Wednesday 31st July | 18:45 | WALK Meet at Sutton Bank Visitor Centre YO7 2EH £4 adults, £3 conc
Visit the scene of a Scottish victory over the English during the Wars of Scottish Independence; the battlefield’s actual location has been the focus of much debate, so join us as we endeavour to shed some light onto this fascinating story. The walk takes in Sutton Bank and the legendary White Horse of Kilburn so stunning views abound come rain or shine. Please note that the walk is essentially along a well-trodden gravel path but that you will be required to cross busy roads. Please wear appropriate footwear and prepare for rapid weather changes along Sutton Bank. The town’s very location has made it a staging post for invasion and your guided walk will tell tales of Romans and Vikings, along with more recent incursions into the town - including artillery batteries in churches and its shelling by Kaiser Wilhelm’s battle-fleet. For this second in a series of two walks we join local historian and archaeologist Roger Weatherill and history enthusiast Fiona Pearson, for a walk around their home village of Bilbrough. Together we shall visit the tomb of one of the English Civil War’s greatest generals, Thomas Fairfax. Bilbrough Manor was built in 1902 for Guy Thomas Fairfax whilst the original manor house, built in 1670, is now a farmhouse. To the west of the village is Ingle Edge hill with its views over to the battlefields of Towton and Marston Moor and close by is a tumulus. This September marks the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden. The battle, a national tragedy, led to the death of 15,000 Scots and English soldiers, 100 noblemen and the Scottish King, James IV. York’s militia was also sent north to play its part in the bloody proceedings and we will be shedding some light on this event which helped shape British and European politics for the next 100 years, culminating with the union of the English and Scottish crowns in 1603.
