Featuring a living history encampment, battle drills, knights in combat, falconry displays, colourful popinjay archery, have a go sword fighting, minstrel musicians, jesters, fantastic crafts, live performances, a bouncy castle, medieval archaeology zone and much more this is a day out you do not want to miss!

14:00 - 16:00 | FREE Guided walks trace the history of this fascinating building, set in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. With its intimate links to the Neville family and Richard III, whose son is reputed to be buried here St Helen’s is steeped in medieval history. Also discover the monuments associated with the Thweng family, who are linked to William Snawsell of Barley Hall in York through his marriage to Joan Thweng.

Medieval Craft & Mystery Tour Tuesday 5th August

By the late fourteenth century the celebration of the feast of Corpus Christi in York had developed into a series of religious pageants acted out by the guilds of York and drawn around the city on carts. An annual event for almost 200 years, these plays became the basis for the modern mystery plays. Join York Archaeological Trust’s Small Finds Expert and author Nicky Rogers to follow the same route taken by the wagons over 600 years ago. Sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing recommended.

Upgrade your ticket on the day for £5 for a copy of Nicky’s book Medieval Craft and Mystery and access to the Henry VII experience at Micklegate Bar, where you’ll see a collection of medieval finds excavated in York over the last 40 years.

History at the Hall Wednesday 6th August

10:00 - 16:00 | Barley Hall | Normal admission prices apply Barley Hall’s volunteer living history team are offering visitors a special treat as they take the Hall back in time, showcasing the life of servants from the late-medieval period. Join them as they recreate the sights, sounds and smells of Snawsell’s Barley Hall.

With opportunities to meet characters, see demonstrations and take part in activities, this is a rare glimpse of social history brought to life in a fantastic setting.

Wednesday 6th August

Join us for a stroll around part of York’s medieval defences; starting at the new Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar and finishing at its partner attraction, The Richard III Experience at Monk Bar. The walk will use the views from these ancient fortifications to retell the stories and events that took place in York during the turbulent times of our history known as the Wars of the Roses.

This walk takes approx 90 minutes and requires safe walking shoes.

Please note that only guide dogs are allowed on the City Walls.

St John the Baptist, Healaugh Wednesday 6th August

18:30 | FREE (donations to the church welcomed) Ramble through the historic landscape around the twelfth-century church, nestled in the Yorkshire Dales and hear how hermits, Austin canons and crusaders all left their mark on this corner of Yorkshire, as well as how Healaugh played a key part in an act of rebellion against the notorious Henry VIII. Please be advised that this walk lasts for around two hours, crossing rough, uneven ground, and will involve walking on some road verges. Participants should ensure that they are fit enough to take part, and should wear outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear. Limited space available, please register your interest to secure your place.

St Mary Bishophill Junior, York Thursday 7th August

14:00 | FREE (donations to church welcomed) This enigmatic little church has in its tower the oldest standing fabric of any York church, as well as a number of unique medieval treasures, including fifteenth-century bells, stained glass and recently rediscovered grave slabs. Join us on a guided walk of the Bishophill area (departing from the church) to hear about its history in medieval York.

Please be advised that this walk lasts for around one hour, and will involve walking on uneven surfaces and crossing some roads. The York of Richard III : Late Medieval York Thursday 7th August

Warwick’s ‘Displeasure’ and the Creation of the Wydevile’s ‘Unsavoury’ Reputation Friday 8th August

Memorials of the Wars of the Roses Saturday 9th August

19:00 | Barley Hall | £4 adult, £3 conc This lecture from Dr Christian Steer, co-editor of The Yorkist Age, will examine fifteenth century attitudes towards death, commemoration and remembrance expressed in monuments to the dead. Dr Steer will also discuss his recent identification of a manuscript reference recording what is believed to be the now lost grave of Richard III’s illegitimate daughter, Katherine.

Come along to the magnificent Guildhall in the centre of York for a fantastic combat class led by the Hotspur School of Defence, a local Western Martial Arts group. Incorporating fight demonstrations as well as the chance for you to get hands on and have a go at sword fighting yourself with the opportunity to see and handle a variety of medieval weaponry, this really is an exciting highlight to this year’s programme.

Each session lasts an hour and a half and participants are asked to wear sturdy footwear with some grip to the soles.

Lacerations & Perforations: The Physical Effects of Sharp Force Trauma

18:30 | York Mansion House | £4 adult, £3 conc This lecture will explore the notion that we should consider human anatomy whilst looking at medieval combat in an effort to fully understand the damage sharp weapons would have when people are facing one another in earnest combat.

Examining various cases of modern day sharp force injuries and deaths and exploring the force needed to actually damage various areas of the body this lecture will provide food for thought and will help emphasise what injuries would cause a minor cut and which would cause mortal wounds.

Harry Hotspur: Exploring What Makes a Knight & Warrior Wednesday 20th August

18:30 | York Mansion House | £4 adult, £3 conc Sir Henry “Hotspur” Percy was a late medieval English nobleman and perhaps one of the finest examples of a traditional Knight. His nickname was bestowed upon him as a tribute to his speed a readiness to attack in battle. This lecture will look at the exploits of Hotspur throughout his life, examining his personal victories, defeats, experiences on campaign and his tactics, presenting him as a paradigm of a medieval English Knight.

Hollywood & The Sword: Dispelling Popular Myths about Medieval Combat Friday 22nd August

18:30 | York Mansion House | £4 adult, £3 conc Medieval combat is a hot topic in Hollywood, however it is something that is often poorly presented and little understood.

In a film or television programme a choreographed fight should tell a story but this lecture will demonstrate how depictions of fight scenes can often result in various misconceptions and misunderstandings about the realities of historical combat. Looking at various examples from the film and television we will examine what is done well, what is done poorly, and suggesting what could be done to improve.

York Minster Summer Holiday Activities

Assize of Ale

Saturday 9th August

10:30 | York Guildhall | FREE (small charge applies for wet sponges! all monies to the Lord Mayor’s charities) See the Guild of Scriveners prepare in their medieval finery for the historic assize of ale; this medieval tradition sees York’s Sheriff and the members of the Guild ‘test’ the quality of York’s ale with a tour around the city’s finest free houses. For the morning of the assize visitors can see the members preparing and buy wet sponges to throw at them when they are hauled to the stocks! This is a City of York Council event.

Seal Making at Guildhall Saturday 9th August

10:00- 12:00 & 14:00 - 16:00 | York Guildhall | FREE Whilst the Guild is preparing for the assize of ale today, why not come next door to the Lord Mayor’s residence to have a go at recreating the ancient 13th century city seal of York using a genuine Victorian press!
