Plague Poverty and Prayer: A Horrid History with Terry Deary

Throughout August 10:00 - 16:00 daily | Barley Hall | Normal admission prices apply Award winning children’s author Terry Deary comes to Barley Hall with a brand new exhibition for 2013 that explores life, death and all the gruesome bits in between, in York during the Middle Ages. Costumes and excerpts from the popular BBC TV show Horrible Histories take centre stage alongside archaeological evidence from York’s medieval cemetries and records of how the people of York were treated, cured and killed by the medical practitioners of the time.

Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th August 10:00 - 17:00 daily | Barley Hall | £2 Adult, £1 Conc. (Upgrade your ticket to include access to the rest of the Hall and the Plague Poverty & Prayer exhibition £3 Adult, £2 Conc.) Medieval Traders gather to sell their wares in the beautiful surroundings of historic Barley Hall. Enjoy living history as you shop for unique gifts and homewares, plus visit the tavern serving traditional ales and wines. Barley Hall is a stunning medieval townhouse, located on the doorstep of York Minster. Once home to the Lord Mayor of York, the building has been lovingly restored to its original splendour.

Opens Saturday 3rd August 10:00 - 16:00 daily I Micklegate Bar Museum Normal admission prices apply This new exhibition at Micklegate Bar Museum explores the terrible events of the Wars of the Roses in Yorkshire, from the struggles between local families to pitched battles that left thousands dead. Uncover the hidden stories of people who lived through these times, and learn how the wars continued in the region beyond the death of the last Yorkist king, Richard III.

Medieval Merriment Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th August 10:00 - 16:30 daily | Pontefract Castle £5 Adult, £3 Child, £12 Family of 3, £15 Family of 4, £18 Family of 5* Join us at historic Pontefract Castle, one of the most important fortresses of the Middle Ages in England, as we hold a fun-packed weekend for all the family to enjoy! With living history encampment, battle drills, falconry, archery, minstrel musician, jester, fantastic crafts, performances and appearances from award winning children’s author Terry Deary**, writer of Horrible Histories, this is a summer holiday event not to be missed! Syningthwaite Priory Walk with Dr Chris Tuckley Wednesday 7th August 18:30 | Start at St Helen’s Church FREE. Donations to the Church are gratefully received Join Dr Chris Tuckley of York Archaeological Trust for this evening stroll to Syningthwaite Priory, formerly the home of a community of Cistercian nuns. The walk will leave from St Helen’s, Bilton-in-Ainsty, a church whose history is closely linked with that of the priory, and will explore the role of the nuns and the place of their church within the medieval landscape. Please be aware that this walk will last at least one hour and will cross unpaved, rough terrain. Outdoor clothing and walking shoes recommended. Pre-booking essential 01904 615505

Explore a Medieval Church - St Mary the Virgin Thursday 8th August 11:00 - 16:00 | St Mary the Virgin, Hemingbrough | FREE Visit this superb medieval church and enjoy its many treasures, including fascinating medieval and Renaissance wood carvings, and a ‘cadaver tomb’. See original work on a medieval theme produced by the children of Hemingbrough Primary School, and tour the church in the company of a guide. With refreshments, a tombola, a woodturner and a local producer of honey on hand too, this open day will be a fun and enlightening experience for visitors of all ages.

Medieval Church Explorer Day Friday 16th August 11:00 - 15:00 | St Helen’s Church, Bilton-in-Ainsty FREE. Donations to the Church gratefully received A rare opportunity to see inside this beautiful church, home to treasures of pre-conquest sculpture, mysterious Anglo-Norman carvings and the ‘Bilton worm’ - a strange relic of the Battle of Marston Moor. With a chance for children to discover, explore and experience this fascinating site with a fun trail, this promises to be an enlightening day out for all the family! PLUS at 14:00 hear Dr Chris Tuckley talk about the Malachy of Ireland’s Book of Poison, a fourteenth-century description of venomous creatures (both real and mythical) and their habits.
