Wednesday 19th August

10:00 - 17:00 | The Richard III Experience | Normal admission prices apply Join us in the atmospheric setting of Monk Bar and meet our medieval soldier, who will be showcasing the arms and armour of the late medieval period as well as discussing the battle tactics of the day. You’re sure to hear a few war stories as well from this veteran of the Wars of the Roses!

History at the Hall

Sunday 23rd August

11:00 - 16:00 | Barley Hall | Normal admission prices apply Barley Hall’s volunteer Living History team are offering visitors a special treat as they take the Hall back in time, showcasing the life of servants in the late-medieval period. Join them as they recreate the sights, sounds and smells of the household of William Snawsell, a former Lord Mayor of York and occupant of Barley Hall towards the end of the medieval period. With opportunities to meet characters, see demonstrations and take part in activities, this is a rare glimpse of social history brought to life in a fabulously atmospheric setting.

The Canterbury Tales

19:30 I St Helen’s Church, York I £7 adult, £5 conc, £4 child Peter Carrington-Porter returns to York with his adaptation of a selection of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, including the Miller’s Tale, the Franklin’s Tale and the Pardoner’s Tale. Medieval Day at Knaresborough Castle

11:00 - 16:00 | Knaresborough Castle | Admission FREE, small cost for some activities using Medieval Coin Exchange: £1 each or 6 for £5 Enjoy a host of family events; for the brave young knights there are medieval sword fighting workshops, where chivalry is just as important as sword skills. Afterwards make an appointment with the Barber Surgeon and discover the gruesome ‘treatments’ they would prescribe for war wounds! 2015 is the 600th anniversary of the battle of Agincourt, and there is no better way to commemorate this great English victory than learning how to be an accomplished Archer at ‘Have-A-Go Archery’. Knaresborough Castle will also play host to a medieval tournament with period combat performances and thrilling birds of prey displays. Plus fun crafts, activities and tours of the castle and its Sallyport will run throughout the day.

Helen Cox: Magna Carta

From Richard to Henry: “That noble House of Yorke…”

14:30 | Start from the Richard III Experience at Monk Bar £4 adult, £3 conc. Join us for a walking tour around parts of York’s medieval defences. Starting at the Richard III Experience at Monk Bar and finishing at the Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar; this guided tour will bring one of the most turbulent times in English history, the Wars of the Roses, back to life. Discover how this period affected the city using the sights from York’s ancient city walls as a backdrop to these fascinating stories. This walk takes approx 90 minutes and requires safe walking shoes. Please note that only guide dogs are allowed on the City Walls. Who Was Edward of Middleham?

Philippa Langley The Looking For Richard Project

Incorporating fight demonstrations, a chance to have a go at sword fighting and the opportunity to see and handle a variety of medieval weaponry, this really is an exciting highlight to this year’s programme. 19:00 | The Mansion House, York | £4 Adult, £3 Conc Human anatomist Emma Halpin-Durband expands her popular lecture series with a new installment focusing on the harrowing effects of blunt force trauma on medieval combatants. Using a mix of modern accidents and injuries contrasted with archaeological remains from the Middle Ages she aims to explain more about how maces, hammers, axes, and other often overlooked weapons were used on the battlefield and the devastating effects they could have when wielded with skill. Trouvère Medieval Minstrels - Magna Melodia

‘Joan of Arc: A History’, with Helen Castor

14:00 I York Guildhall I £10 adult, £8 Con Join the JORVIK Medieval Festival keynote speaker, Dr Helen Castor, to hear the fascinating story of Joan of Arc, the peasant girl who heard voices from God, and became a warrior leading an army to victory in an age that believed women cannot fight. Dr Castor’s latest book uses the transcripts of Joan’s two medieval trials to build fascinating insights into her life and world. Terry Deary’s 7 Ages of York

19:00 | The Guildhall, York | £12 per adult, £10 per con, £8 per child Suitable for children 5 and up Horrible Histories author Terry Deary is joined by musicians Eboracum Baroque to take you on a journey through the gruesome history of York. The ‘7 Ages of York’ will include hilarious stories from the time of the Vicious Vikings and Measly Middle Ages as well as the Terrible Tudors and those Slimy Stuarts; including one of York’s most notorious villains, and former York resident, Guy Fawkes. Accompanied by music from across the centuries by Eboracum Baroque - a baroque ensemble of singers and instrumentalists Terry will make sure he doesn’t leave out the important gory and ghastly bits! The Plague Doctor will be in residence at the hall, ready to diagnose any ailment and offer a terrifyingly medieval cure – for the right price, of course! With Bird of Prey displays, fun crafts and themed activities on offer throughout the day this is going to be a day of Medieval Merriment for all!

Towton Battlefield Walk

Sunday 16th, 23rd and 30th August 10:30 I The Rockingham Arms, Towton I £3.00 Join a guided walk at Towton and let an experienced guide take you on a tour of one of Britain’s bloodiest Battlefields. In 1461 , the forces of medieval England met in the fields of Towton for a day of unparallelled savagery that left 28,000 dead. Join the Towton Battlefield Society and follow in the footsteps of the Lancastrian Army as they marched along Iron Age track-ways through beautiful Yorkshire scenery to the heart of the Battle. You may even see the White Horse on Sutton Bank or a hovering Red Kite. This is more than your typical battlefield walk. Please park by the adjacent Barn , wear stout shoes and be dressed for the Yorkshire weather.

Monday 3rd August 12:00 I The Crooked Billet, Saxton I Free Admission Celebrate Yorkshire in the heart of medieval Yorkshire with a visit to a small Living history camp. Take the opportunity to walk the nearby Towton Battlefield Trail and discover Lord Dacre’s tomb at Saxton Church.
