Welcome, Division 18, to the 3rd edition of “Josh’s Journney”! Inside, you will find very important information, updates on new events and a featured article from one of the clubs in the division! I hope all of you are experiencing great wonders in your club, despite it being nearly the end of the year! Hear are a couple of reminders: -Club Monthly Report Forms: Club secretaries must continue to send in their CMRF’s by the 9th of every month, even during the summer months! Send the form to my email, ltg18.mariscal@gmail.com and District Secretary Sarah Park at secretary.separk@gmail.com. -Club Roster Sheets: I have yet to receive a couple of Roster Sheets for the new officers of this upcoming year. These need to be filled out by the time the school year ends! They also need to be emailed to me and District Secretary Sarah Park! -ICON Payment: If you have signed up to attend this year’s International Convention, the final payment of $495 is due on June 4th. Checks should go out to “New Jersey District of Key Club”. Thank you!

This month’s featured article comes from Clifton High School’s Vice President, Bayanne Waqqad, on their Sunshine Collection!

Clifton High School's Key Club kicks off its annual partnership with the "Sunshine Collection" every year on April, with the hope of raising money for needy children. The Sunshine Collection was founded by Gabriella Handel in 2009; their mission was to spread happiness and sunshine to the children in the pediatric oncology and hematology department at St. Joseph's Children Hospital. In 2013, Clifton High School's Key Club ranked in 1st place in the state of Ney Jersey for donating the most goods and funds for the collection.

By working together with Key Club; the Sunshine Collection has grown tremendously over the years. Through determination and caring members they have spread the word and collected vast amounts of items throughout the school. Every year, we place several large-yellow Sunshine boxes in the schools Media Center, Main office, and Key Club room for anyone to drop off items. Key Club members involve in this collection by carrying small yellow boxes to collect change for a month. -VP of Clifton High School Bayanne Waqqad

This year’s Spring Regional Training Conferences took place on May 9th and May 16th at the Morris County School of Technology and Southern Regional High School. They were both a huge success! Many members from clubs all around the district attended to learn more about their positions in Key Club! If you did not attend in the spring, don’t worry! There are still 3 more opportunities to attend: on September 12th, it will be at West Deptford High School, September 13th will be at Phillipsburg High School and September 19th will be at Millburn High School! Remember that you must attend at least one RTC in order to be distinguished!

During the several OTC’s that I held, several officers have asked what Youth Opportunities Fund is. Youth Opportunities Fund, or YOF, is a special fund within Kiwanis International that helps provide grants for service projects. Applications, which can be found in the Key Club International website, can be submitted until October 15th at 11:59 PM, and funding assistance can range from $100 to $2,000. This is a very great opportunity to serve your community more diligently and be more financially stable! More information can be found here: http://keyclub.org/service/fund/ yof.aspx. I highly recommend you use this, as it can only benefit you in the long run!

The District Board has several committees, International Programs being one of them. They deal with different events throughout the year as well as Key Club’s Preferred Charities. They have been releasing a lot of information, all of which will be here in this newsletter! From Key Leader to the American Red Cross to Service Partners, you will get a plethora of information!

Key Leader Imagine a weekend in the woods with about 65 Key Clubbers learning about service leadership and having fun while doing it – that is exactly what Key Leader is! This year, from December 4 thDecember 6th, Kiwanis is sponsoring their annual Key Leader in Camp Cross Roads in Port Murray, NJ! As mentioned, about 65 students join together for a weekend to learn about what it means to be a leader. From ropes courses to informative workshops, Key Leader is an overall amazing experience! At Key Leader you are able to meet teens from all over New Jersey who share a passion for service just like you! The friendships and bonds you form at Key Leader are incredible. The great thing is that not just Key Clubbers attend – students not in Key Club as well as 8th Graders can join in on the fun! If a student has attended a Key Leader prior to this year, they are able to sign up as a Student Facilitator. At Key Leader, students break off into groups called “neighborhoods” and Student Facilitators are in charge of neighborhoods. The neighborhood will have to create their own mascots, posters, and will be taking part in team building activities together. The Student Facilitators will get a discounted price of about $115 of what would be $200 for non Key Clubbers and $175 for Key Clubbers. The money goes towards food, lodging and activities throughout the weekend. It is truly a life changing experience, and you get to meet so many amazing people! If you have any questions about Key Leader, feel free to contact me or our Key Leader subcommittee chair, Josh Mariscal at ltg18.mariscal@gmail.com. I hope to see you there!

Outside Organizations: American Red Cross The American Red Cross is an organization that provides compassionate care to those in need to achieve their goal of preventing and relieving suffering, around the world and in America. On May 21st, 1881, Clara Barton and a few of her acquaintances founded the American Red Cross after first hearing of the Swiss-inspired global Red Cross network while visiting Europe succeeding the Civil War. The American Red Cross has five KEY service areas: Disaster Relief, Supporting America’s Military Families, Lifesaving Blood, Health and Safety Services, and International Services. As a Key Clubber, there are many ways to help the American Red Cross. Fundraising is always essential to the success of any organization, and funds are always needed to help those in need. You are encouraged to ask for support from local businesses, or individuals and groups in your local community. When fundraising, you may hold an individual event and submit the proceeds as a club, or ask for general request to use the American Red Cross Brand and fundraise directly to the American Red Cross. With a focus to direct service, a Key Clubber can give blood or have their club host a blood drive. When hosting a blood drive, it is imperative that the club offers a suitable location, recruits and schedules donors, and publicizes the drive. Volunteers are always needed at these blood drives, from welcoming and signing in donors, to thanking and assisting donors in the refreshment and recovery station. Furthermore, a club could even host or take an American Red Cross class; classes range from first aid and CPR for students to disaster and international services training for adults. These classes would be of extreme benefit to the community and the students, while being hosted by a Key Club! It is also important to remember that even though your Key Club may not be able to host an event, or very few American Red Cross opportunities may arise near you, advocating is essential to the success of any organization. The use of social media, and first hand encouragement of others to get involved, can go a long way!

As a way to bring the division close to each other as well as the district, an idea came to mind to hold a bi-divisional event with Division 17. The event would be a back-toschool type of get together (possibly the last Saturday in September) where there would be large group and small group activities as well as a way to get to know about Key Club as a whole. This event would be open to all club members, and would be a great way to recruit members to your clubs, as they would not only get to know what Key Club really is, but also get to meet people who are in Key Club as well. If there are any suggestions to make this event any better, please feel free to email me or text me. I can’t wait to see how this event unfolds!

Divisional Council Meetings, or DCM’s, are meetings held every other month in order to meet face to face with officer’s of the Division in order to give them information on District/Divisional events. At least one representative from each club must attend every DCM; I would like as many people to go as I want the officers of the division to get to know each other better! Here is a tentative schedule for our DCM’s so you can all start planning ahead on rides! -DCM #1—Held already -DCM #2—Friday, June 19th -DCM #3—End of July/Beginning of August -DCM #4—End of September/Beginning of October -DCM # 5—End of November/Beginning of December -DCM #6—End of January/Beginning of February *All DCM’s will be held in Panera Bread in Montclair, NJ (15 Bloomfield Ave.) at around 5 PM.
