Introduction & Reminders Division 18: It has been an amazing 7 months serving as your Lieutenant Governor. However, every year, around this time, the search for a successor comes in full swing. I hope that you all are as great with the next LTG as you were with me! NJ Key Club has been very active in the month of October, while we prepared for the very successful Fall Rally, and we have a very busy next few months as we prepare for DCON starting at our November Board Meeting next weekend! Here are a few reminders: -Secretaries should continue to hand in their CMRF’s! -Talk to the underclassmen of your clubs about possibly running for LTG. -LTG Elections are on January 14th at Nutley High School. -Our 4th DCM just passed, which was on November 7th. The 5th one should be the day of LTG Elections. -Our Bi-Divisional Spike Out Hunger is on November 21st at Livingston High School -All clubs must have dues in by December 1st!! I hope you all enjoy the rest of the newsletter! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me!

Featured Article This month’s Featured Article section comes from Nutley Key Club’s president, Amir Gamil. Nutley has been a very hard working club since I took office, and it is great that they partake in events such as this. Without further ado, here is this month’s featured article!

This past month, the Nutley High School Key Club has partnered with the Nutley Museum in their pumpkin painting festival provided to young children. In this festival, children would come to the museum and enjoy a wonderful time painting with their parents and eating pumpkin themed snacks. The Nutley Museum would usually get 200-250 participants every year. It is a very big event that children from all over Nutley participate in.

Featured Article (cont.) Every year, the Nutley Museum asks for around twenty key club members to attend the festival to help the children and make them feel they are in a friendly environment. This year, Commissioner Steve Rogers has stopped by and visited the Nutley Museum Festival. He saw how friendly the Key Club members were to the children and was very pleased. In his own words, "Another reason why Nutley is one of the greatest places to live!" The festival was a success and brought happiness to many children and parents.

Thanks, Amir, for handing in an article for this month’s newsletter! If you want one your events to be featured in my newsletters, please contact me! Also, for the next Jersey Key, Editor David is asking clubs to submit articles and pictures of any events. If you wish to be included in that, please contact me or David at editor.guirgis@gmail.com. Thanks once again, Amir!

Fall Rally Recap Fall Rally this year was a huge success! With just around 2,200 people from all around the district attending, we once again showed why this is the largest gathering of Key Clubbers all over the world! From Division 18, Bloomfield, Clifton and Nutley attended, and they all showed amazing spirit—next year, I’m sure we will win the coveted Spirit Stick! The theme was “Oh, the Service You’ll Do”, where every division’s LTG was assigned a character from a Dr. Suess book. Starting around 9:30, the general session brought every division to their feet, as they competed for the spirit stick, applauded the speakers, and just wanted to show their love for Key Club. The Keynote Speaker was Zone Administrator Mrs. Meissner, who talked about her life with the NJ Federation of Food Banks.

Fall Rally Recap When the session ended around 11:15, all attendees were able to wander the park with their club or with friends from around NJ. Some clubs were able to stay for Fright Fest, an annual festivity in Six Flags to celebrate Haloween! Overall, Fall Rally was an amazing time! I was able to spend time with my closest friends, and I truly enjoyed seeing so many excited Key Clubbers! I truly hope that next year, there can be a higher divisional attendance for Division 18, as Fall Rally is very inspirational, and it is what really got me to run for LTG. If you have any questions on Fall Rally, feel free to ask me or anybody on the district board— we all love talking about our favorite event of the year!

Bi-Divisional Spike Out Hunger

Bi-Divisional Spike Out Hunger (cont.) Last year, Divisions 18 and 19 squared off in the Bi-Divisional Elminathon. This year, we’re going back together to compete in this year’s tournament, the Spike Out Hunger! I sent you all both the Google form as well as the printable registration sheet to make teams—make sure to promote this event to all of your members! The event will be taking place on Saturday, November 21st at Livingston High School from 5-9 PM. The entrance fee is $5 per person, and there will be food sold over there, with all proceeds going towards the district project, the NJ Federation of Food Banks. If you are willing to help volunteer that day, make sure to tell me! Whoever wins the competition will be going to the district Spike Out Hunger, taking place in Mid-February. I hope to see you attending the event!

Key Leader

Key Leader (cont.) Imagine a weekend in the woods with about 65 Key Clubbers learning about service, leadership, and having fun while doing it – that is exactly what Key Leader is! This year, from December 4th - December 6th, Kiwanis is sponsoring their annual Key Leader in Camp Cross Roads in Port Murray, NJ! As mentioned, about 65 students join together for a weekend to learn about what it means to be a leader. From ropes courses to informative workshops, Key Leader is an overall amazing experience! At Key Leader you are able to meet teens from all over New Jersey who share a passion for service just like you! The friendships and bonds you form at Key Leader are incredible. The great thing is that not just Key Clubbers attend – students not in Key Club as well as 8th Graders can join in on the fun! If a student has attended a Key Leader prior to this year, they are able to sign up as a Student Facilitator. At Key Leader, students break off into groups called “neighborhoods” and Student Facilitators are in charge of neighborhoods. The neighborhood will have to create their own mascots, posters, and will be taking part in team building activities together. The Student Facilitators will get a discounted price of about $115 of what would be $200 for non Key Clubbers and $175 for Key Clubbers. The money goes towards food, lodging and activities throughout the weekend. It is truly a life changing experience, and you get to meet so many amazing people! If you have any questions about Key Leader, feel free to contact me or our Key Leader subcommittee chair, Josh Mariscal at ltg18.mariscal@gmail.com. I hope to see you there!

The Eliminate Project Update

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation The Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation founded in 2005, is “curing childhood cancer, one cup at a time.” Alexandra Scott was diagnosed with childhood cancer right before her 4th birthday. This determined and young girl wanted to raise money for the doctors trying to find a cure. In just one day, Alexandra was able to raise over $2,000. The mission of this organization is to raise money and awareness of childhood cancer causes, primarily research into new treatments and cures. Along with this their second mission is to encourage and empower others, especially children, to get involved and make a difference for children with cancer. Since the start of the foundation over $100 million have been raised. This has helped fund more than 500 cutting-edge research projects
, create a travel program to help support families of children receiving treatment
, and develop resources to help people everywhere affected by childhood cancer. People from all over have become encouraged to help with this organization just like one of their missions. Many Key Clubs have taken part in creating their own Alex’s Lemonade Stands across New Jersey. To get involved go to http:// www.alexslemonade.org/get-involved. At this past DCON, you could even find an Alex’s Lemonade representative sharing their story and how to get involved with the organization. You can even attend an ALSF event such as Alex’s Million Mile or The Lemon Run. There are many more ways to help Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation so check out their website and get involved!!
