Introduction & Reminders Hello, Division 18, and welcome to the new school year! The end of this month will mark 6 months that I started serving you all, which sadly means that I only have 6 more months with you all. However, as the school year starts, you will have a lot of work to do to bring in new members! Dues are very important for them to pay, so pay attention to later on in the newsletter as to how much dues are! Also, Regional Training Conferences and Fall Rally are right around the corner! For RTC’s, all officers must attend on to be distinguished at DCON, and Fall Rally is a great way to start the service year off at Six Flags! Here are some reminders: -Fall Rally is October 11th -CMRF’s are due by the 9th of every month! -Dues are $12.50 for District and International -Make sure to promote Key Club all throughout the school! -Our next DCM will be either the end of October or beginning of November I hope you enjoy the rest of the newsletter!

Featured Article This month, the featured article will be on the new divisional shirt, made by Clifton’s president, Bayanne Waqqad! Thanks to her for the amazing idea, and if it sells well, the shirt will be sold at DCM’s and divisional events as well! The website is www.boosters.com/ division18, it’s $15 and all proceeds will go towards March of Dimes! Without further ado, here is the article talking about the shirt!

“When designing a shirt, it takes time to think of a creative design that can explain the story behind it. As I was designing a shirt for Division 18 of Key Club, it took me a minute to think "How can I describe 'Key Club', something that means so much to me?" Yes, it's only two words consisting of seven letters, but Key Club means so much more than service and leadership; it is a strong family formed by loyal, caring, and kind volunteers who seek the best for others before themselves.

Featured Article We Key Clubbers take time off our schedule to help others, set up booths for events, serve the needy at soup kitchens, and raise funds for a cause. Arising from my passion for Key Club, I decided to include words that describe Key Club on the design, such as: Giving, encouraging, willpower, and hope. That way, when non-members see it being worn, it can be clear - We don't make Keys, we make a Difference. We are a family, growing, helping, and making a difference together. -President Bayanne Waqqad of Clifton Thank you, once again, for the amazing shirt!

Fall RTC’s

Fall RTC’s (cont.) All three Fall RTC’s are just days away! It is a great time to spend with other NJ Key Clubbers, and to learn more about your respective positions and what your role is at the district/ international levels. Remember that you must attend at least one in order to be distinguished at DCON! It is great to be recognized for the work and effort put to this organization, so try your best to attend! They are all from 9-1 AM, and breakfast and lunch is provided. Feel free to bring general members so that they can see how big Key Club truly is! Also, take these days to get to know other Key Clubbers. I know that when I was an officer, getting to meet other Key Clubbers is one of the ways that propelled me to where I am today. You will truly have a great time at RTC’s!

Fall Rally Article

Fall Rally: Division 18 I can’t stress how amazing Fall Rally is! It is truly one of the highlights at the district level that everybody looks forward to! One important thing to keep in mind is the divisional goal set for early registration. The minimum is 122 members from Division 18 to go. School wise, the attendance goals are: Belleville: 2 members Bloomfield: 38 members Clifton: 18 members Glen Ridge: 1 member Nutley: 65 members St. Mary’s: 1 member Fall Rally is truly a great time, and who doesn’t want to go to Six Flags? Make sure to contact either me, Fall Rally Registration Chairperson Bobbie Boettinger or District Governor Josie Suddeth with any questions on this great event! I’ll see you all there!

Key Leader

Key Leader (cont.) Imagine a weekend in the woods with about 65 Key Clubbers learning about service, leadership, and having fun while doing it – that is exactly what Key Leader is! This year, from December 4th - December 6th, Kiwanis is sponsoring their annual Key Leader in Camp Cross Roads in Port Murray, NJ! As mentioned, about 65 students join together for a weekend to learn about what it means to be a leader. From ropes courses to informative workshops, Key Leader is an overall amazing experience! At Key Leader you are able to meet teens from all over New Jersey who share a passion for service just like you! The friendships and bonds you form at Key Leader are incredible. The great thing is that not just Key Clubbers attend – students not in Key Club as well as 8th Graders can join in on the fun! If a student has attended a Key Leader prior to this year, they are able to sign up as a Student Facilitator. At Key Leader, students break off into groups called “neighborhoods” and Student Facilitators are in charge of neighborhoods. The neighborhood will have to create their own mascots, posters, and will be taking part in team building activities together. The Student Facilitators will get a discounted price of about $115 of what would be $200 for non Key Clubbers and $175 for Key Clubbers. The money goes towards food, lodging and activities throughout the weekend. It is truly a life changing experience, and you get to meet so many amazing people! If you have any questions about Key Leader, feel free to contact me or our Key Leader subcommittee chair, Josh Mariscal at ltg18.mariscal@gmail.com. I hope to see you there!

Divisional Event Update As part of fundraising for the District Project the NJ Federation of Food Banks, the District Board decided to have an event similar to last year’s Eliminathon’s, this year called “Spike Out Hunger”. Each division will be working with the division next to them in having a Bi-Divisional Volleyball event, with the winners making it to the District-Wide event in mid-February. Division 18 is paired with Division 19. We are working on a date and place, but it will most likely be at Livingston High School on November 7th. The entrance fee would either be 1-3 lbs. of food or $5 to the Federation. There will also be an open gym section for those who aren’t into Volleyball, as well as donated food/ drinks. Make sure that you spread the word throughout your clubs as early as your first meeting, as it is a good time to meet people, get active, and raise money for a great organization! There will also probably another divisional event, but that is still in the works. Keep an eye out for an update on both!

Dues Reminder Every member is responsible for paying their dues, which is a vital part of Key Club’s success. With $5.50 going to the district and $7.00 going to international—equaling a total of $12.50—events such as DCON, RTC’s and International Convention are able to happen. Up to an extra $5.00 are able to go towards your club’s treasury. The early bird deadline is November 1st and the regular deadline is December 1st. If you have any questions as to where specifically you have to send it to, please feel free to ask me, District Treasurer Bobbie Boettinger or District Governor Josie Suddeth.

The ELEMONate Challenge Remember last summer when everyone was pouring buckets of ice cold water on their heads in support of ALS and each person nominated 3 other people to do the same challenge? You could either accept the challenge and also donate $10 (or more), or deny the challenge and donate $100. This summer, the Pacific Northwest District of Key Club has kick started a new challenge called the Elemonate Challenge to support the Eliminate Project. In order to take part in this challenge, you just need Âź of a lemon and a camera or phone with video capabilities. Once you start the video, say your name and who you were nominated by, and nominate 3 other people (or organizations). Then on the count of 3, bite into the lemon and chew it fully through. When completed, we ask that you donate at least $1.80 towards the Eliminate Project. $1.80 is enough for a series of 3 vaccinations to save a mother and all of her future babies from Maternal Neonatal Tetanus, or MNT. MNT takes the life of a newborn child every 11 minutes. On August 15th, the New Jersey District Board of Trustees participated in the Elemonate Challenge at their second board meeting of their terms. The New Jersey District Board of Trustees was nominated by Governor Josie Suddeth when she was at LeadCon and we decided to nominate all Key Clubbers in the entire New Jersey District. The Eliminate Project has been a large part of the K-Family in the past few years, especially in the New Jersey District of Key Club. We challenged you to accept the Elemonate Challenge so cut up a lemon, grab a few friends, video your challenge, nominate a few friends, and then donate! Enjoy that sour lemon!! -LTG Thomas Beeby
