Hello, Division 18, and Happy 4th of July! I hope you all have great plans for this year’s Independence Day, as well as the rest of your summer! I have just recently arrived from Indianapolis, Indiana, where Key Clubbers, Kiwanians, Circle K-ers and Aktion Clubbers took over the city for their annual International Conventions as well as to celebrate Kiwanis’ 100th birthday! It was an amazing experience, and the New Jersey District took ICON by storm! A couple of reminders: -CMRF’s are due on the 9th of every month, even during the summer months! Make sure to continue handing them in! -The LTG of Division 17 and I have been planning a bidivisional event on Saturday, October 3rd at Overpeck County Park from 5-8! Find more information on it later on in the newsletter! -I am planning the next DCM to be on August 14th at 5:00 PM at Panera. Please contact me if you can go. Thanks, and enjoy the newsletter!
This month’s Featured Article comes from the treasurer of Bloomfield High School, Shereen Mohammed, who describes her experiences at ICON! This previous week, I had the privilege of going to ICON. This was my first time going there, and at first, I didn’t know what to expect. The first time I heard the Key Club International President talk to us about how Key Club is a student oriented club and that it helped shape students into leaders, it completely changed the way I thought about Key Club. Form the get go, I had always believed that Key Club was all about volunteer work. I had never thought that the international K-Family can do so much as help 100 million mothers and their future babies survive and potentially eliminate MNT from the earth.
This previous week didn’t just change the way I thought about Key Club, ICON helped me create new friendships all over the world. There wasn’t one person that came up to me that I didn’t talk to. Going to ICON helped me come out of my comfort zone. ICON helped me grow as a person and expand my circle of friends. Every single person that was at ICON was there for the right reason and you learn that pretty quickly. All the officers and members wanted to learn how to expand their clubs back home and learn what they’re doing wrong and how to fix it. To see all that in every single person was an experience that I would never trade for anything. -Bloomfield High School Treasurer Shreen Mohammed
This year’s International Convention was probably the most interesting one, as all members of the KFamily attended! The new international board was elected, with Rip Livingston from the Alabama District becoming our next International President and Addison Clipfell our next International Vice President! I would like to give a shoutout to the Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor of our Division, Ricky Thompson, who although did not get the office of International Trustee, still managed to make New Jersey proud by doing something not many people do! Also, I would like to offer my congratulations to Devin Sun from the New Jersey District who did make it to the International Board! Everybody is very proud of his accomplishments!
The New Jersey District made many stops to and from Indianapolis, such as Hershey World, Indianapolis Speedway, Cedar Point Amusement Park and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! With long bus rides, great games of bingo and watching Disney movies, the New Jersey District had an overall great time! Hopefully, you all decide to go next yeat, as you can see how truly international Key Club really is!
As mentioned in the introduction of this newsletter, the Lieutenant Governor of Division 17 and I have been in nearing the end of our search of a location and ideas for our Bi-Divisional event. It will most likely be at Overpeck County Park in Fort Lee, NJ. It will be a PreFall Rally event where we do a some large group icebreakers and then use the rest of the time for free time. It would be Saturday, October 3rd from 5 PM—8 PM. The entrance fee would only a canned food item for our District Project, the NJ Federation of Food Banks! As soon as school starts, please advertise this event as much as possible to your members!
Imagine a weekend in the woods with about 65 Key Clubbers learning about service, leadership, and having fun while doing it – that is exactly what Key Leader is! This year, from December 4th - December 6th, Kiwanis is sponsoring their annual Key Leader in Camp Cross Roads in Port Murray, NJ! As mentioned, about 65 students join together for a weekend to learn about what it means to be a leader. From ropes courses to informative workshops, Key Leader is an overall amazing experience! At Key Leader you are able to meet teens from all over New Jersey who share a passion for service just like you! The friendships and bonds you form at Key Leader are incredible. The great thing is that not just Key Clubbers attend – students not in Key Club as well as 8th Graders can join in on the fun! If a student has attended a Key Leader prior to this year, they are able to sign up as a Student Facilitator. At Key Leader, students break off into groups called “neighborhoods” and Student Facilitators are in charge of neighborhoods. The neighborhood will have to create their own mascots, posters, and will be taking part in team building activities together. The Student Facilitators will get a discounted price of about $115 of what would be $200 for non Key Clubbers and $175 for Key Clubbers. The money goes towards food, lodging and activities throughout the weekend. It is truly a life changing experience, and you get to meet so many amazing people! If you have any questions about Key Leader, feel free to contact me or our Key Lead-
er subcommittee chair, Josh Mariscal at ltg18.mariscal@gmail.com. I hope to see you there!
As an annual event, each summer the NJ District of Circle K holds an event for all branches of the K-Family called the K-Family Picnic. At this event you spend the day with fellow Key Clubbers as well as the K-Kids (elementary level), Builders Clubs (middle School level), Circle K (College level) and Kiwanis. You can engage in community service, food, fun and games right on the beach! This event serves as a great way to mingle and get to know your fellow k-Family members. United the k-Family can fight for any cause and change the world so this event also allows you to build relationships with fellow volunteers to work together in the future. The more people involved in making a change the bigger the change is! Utilizing the bonds you make at this picnic may allow for your events to reach a wider audience. Join us for a fun day on the beach!
