REASONS TO ATTEND ICHC 2016 IN ‹STANBUL

Meeting on the Bosphorus Learn and share knowledge Meet colleagues from all around the world Meet industry representatives Discover a city: where 2 continents meet: the magnificent ‹stanbul

Dear Colleagues and Friends, It is my pleasure to invite you to "15th International Congress of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry-ICHC 2016" in June, 19 - 22, 2016, Istanbul, Turkey. International Congress of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry, held every four years under the auspices of IFSHC has been providing an international medium on up-to-date new techniques to contribute to scientific progresses. Turkish Society for Electron Microscopy (TSEM) has been founded in 1971. Twenty biannual congresses have been organized in various centers in Turkey almost all with international participation. TSEM has been well represented by its 578 members at international and local congresses. The main goal of ICHC 2016 is to bring the worldwide histochemists together and to provide an environment for close cooperation, exchange of information and possible collaborations. As Istanbul (2010-European Capital of Culture) is centrally located between Europe and Asia, we hope an easy access of scientists from all areas. Istanbul is a unique historic meeting point of Turkey, with its historical monuments, museums and with breathtaking scenic atmosphere of Bosphorus and magnificent bridges linking Euroasia. Istanbul has an excellent climate in June, which is the scheduled time for the proposed congress. "Military Museum Convention and Exhibition Center", proposed congress venue, is an historical building within city center with an ideal range of facilities. A professional team will contribute to the scientific and social organizations during the congress. We are candidate for ICHC 2016, as we are well organized, enthusiastic and expertise. We assure for delegates a safe, well-organized and a memorable congress. We are looking forward to a favorable decision by the IFSHC delegates. Sincerely Yours, Prof. Serap ARBAK, Ph.D. President of Turkish Society for Electron Microscopy

TURKEY AS A DESTINATION

Turkey as a destination

TURKEY AS A DESTINATION Turkey: An endless poem In Turkey, daily life consists on the one hand of conforming to the needs of the time, and on the other of cherishing the traces and colors of thousands of years of cultural accumulation. These lands embrace at any moment the mystery of the past through the existence of the statues of gods and goddesses, temples, theaters, agoras, churches, mosques, medresseh, palaces ‌ Turkey is one of the places on earth where several religions were born. There are many significant religious sites and centers scattered throughout Asia Minor. Turkey is a country where all the colors find definition. Here, nature means diversity. Mountain and plain, forest and wilderness, sun and snow‌ Contrasts turn into fascinating forms of beauty. Surrounded with the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea from three directions, Turkey generously offers 8000 km of beautiful shores. There, time transcends into history. Time gains meaning with people. Because of its geographical location, the mainland, Anatolia, has witnessed the mass migration of diverse peoples shaping the course of history. Twentyfour fascinating civilizations render Turkey the heir of 10.000 years old history, which has still been examined for further ancient secrets to be brought up into daylight.

35

Following his innate benevolent instincts, The Turk is a most gracious and generous host. Even the poorest peasants feel the need to host guest in the their best possible manner. Hospitality is taken to such an extent that a foreigner often feels he is suffering from an overdose of it after being plied with food and drinks for hours and being unable to refuse anything lest he hurt his host’s feelings. In addition to ensuring his guest’s comfort, the Turkish people make every effort to converse, no matter what linguistic barriers might exist. Turkish is written in Latin alphabet and is spoken by some 150-200 million people around the world. Religion 98% of the Turkish population is Muslim. However, by constitution, everyone in Turkey has freedom of religion and beliefs. In Turkey you will find Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Armenian churches as well as Synagogues and everyone is free to practice the religion of his choosing. Istanbul has many areas where people of very different religions have lived side-by-side for centuries with their practices and customs and continue to do so. Currency The Turkish Lira is available in notes and coins. The exchange rate is determined daily; several banks and exchange offices are available. Traveler’s checks can be cashed in most banks. Hotels and many shops and restaurants accept foreign currency. There is no limit to the amount of foreign currency that travelers can bring cash. ‹stanbul as a destination "There, God and human, nature and art are together, they have created such a perfect place that it is valuable to see." Lamartine ‹STANBUL AS A DESTINATION

Lamartine’s famous poetic line reveals his love for Istanbul, describing the embracing of two continents, with one arm reaching out to Asia and the other to Eurospe.

‹STANBUL AS A DESTINATION Why ‹stanbul? The eye gazes sleepily across the seductive blue sweep of the Bosphorus: One country - two continents. As diverse as night and day, the only thing they have in common is the miraculous mirage that is ‹stanbul -a hotchpotch skyline of sensually shaped mosques, minarets and styscrapers scattered across seven hills. ‹stanbul is rapidly becoming one of the most popular international congress and exhibition destinations as a result of the increasing demand for suitable facilities. ‹stanbul is a city competing professionally to fulfill the demands. ‹stanbul is the real Turkish delight, a mixture of old and new where east meets west. The city is an exciting combination of the splendors of the Ottoman past and the modern amenities of a wide variety of international deluxe 5-star hotels. Guaranteed to make your meeting, conference or incentive a memorable success, ‹stanbul is the gateway to the rest of Turkey - definitely a paradise preserved.

40

‹STANBUL AS A DESTINATION A City of Harmony in a Country of Variety The cultural diversity of Istanbul defines exaggeration. A Roman city converted into Christianity. It was also the seat of Islamic caliphate that preserved the patriarchate of Christian orthodoxy. It has been a refuge for Jews fleeing Spain in the XV. Century and for those seeking asylum in 1930s. Belonging to 3 different religions and speaking 10 different languages, 26 ethnics groups live in ‹stanbul in harmony.

International Meetings in a Safe and Lively City ‹stanbul is a metropolitan city with an advanced security planning and experience. The city has an astonishingly low record of crime according to Interpol statistics. General security is common in public places such as shopping centres and hotels and visitors should be prepared for security and/or identity checks at such places. Entertainment ‹stanbul is one of those metropolitans of the world that never sleeps. Thousands of restaurants, bars, discos and nightclubs offer a vigorous variety of entertainment for all tastes.

41

‹STANBUL AS A DESTINATION Shoppers’ Paradise ‹stanbul is the shoppers’ paradise for carpets, leather goods, gold bargains and fashion. 4,000 shops under one roof make the fascinating Covered Bazaar with an irresistible location for eager shoppers, while the modern shopping malls make life easier for those on a tight schedule. Value for Money Prices in ‹stanbul, whether for shopping, dining or accommodation, are internationally competitive and attractive for all congress participants regardless of their nationality. Easy to Access Direct flights from more than 80 international cities by Turkish Airlines and more than 150 direct flights by different airways. ‹STANBUL has a daily air access from almost 300 destinations. Competent Infrastructure Along with the most sophisticated equipment required for international congresses, ‹stanbul enjoys state of the art telecommunication systems and broadcasting infrastructure. Princess Island

Unique Venues for Events ‹stanbul’s imperial past has left a legacy of magnificent palaces and mansions throughout the city. Some of these are available for banquets, cultural and other special events. A memorable evening would be a three-hour cruise on the Bosporus with a five star catering. First Class Convention Facilities Congres Center, Turkey’s largest congress center, is located in the main business district of the city. It has been recently built to meet the standards of the world’s most modern convention facilities. Congres Center is in the center of a series of meeting and exhibition buildings all together forming the Conference Valley. First Class Accommodation Facilities ‹stanbul has more than 40,000 hotel rooms, some 15,000 of them built during the last 10 years at international standards, designed to please even the most sophisticated guests. There are 7,000 five star hotel rooms. These well-located establishments are on a par with Eurospe’s top-class hotels, offering the ultimate service and quality. International hotel management chains manage the majority. The number of 4 star hotel rooms that are fully air-conditioned and standard required for international meetings reaches 5,000.

City Transportation Apart from public buses, trains and trams the most common means of transportation are taxis, ferry boats and dolmus. Dolmus Dolmus (literally full of passengers) is a kind of shared taxi which, sometimes takes the form of a large car, a station wagon, a regular taxi or a minibus. It follows a specific fixed route. Passengers pay according to the distance traveled and can get in and out whenever and wherever they want to by informing the driver. It is a very practical means of transport and much cheaper than a taxi. The dolmus fares are determined by municipalities according to distances. Taxis Taxis are numerous all over Turkey and are recognizable by their yellow color and lighted "taxi" signs on top. Each taxi is metered and there are two different rates. After midnight (24:00) till morning (06:00) it will cost 50% more than the daytime fare. Additional expenses like ferryboat or bridge crossing fees are extra to passengers. Tipping is not necessary, however leaving the change or rounding up the fare is customary. Ferry Boats The busy city of Istanbul sits on the shores of Europe and Asia. Many of the inhabitants live on one continent but work, study or socialize on the other. Apart from the two bridges on the Bosphorus, ferry boats are the only means to connect the two continents and are therefore vital. The ferry service is reliable and peaceful operating throughout the day and until midnight.
