Some studies on Heat Pipe Performance Parameters Nikhil Dev* Mechanical Engineering Department, YMCA University of Science and Technology, Faridabad, Haryana, India

Abstract Technology is making its way through human development with new inventions in science and engineering. Control of heat transfer improves system performance in many ways. At present heat pipes are the components with the capability of higher rate of heat transfer. The rate of heat transfer is further dependent upon many parameters such as vviscous limit, sonic limit, entrainment limit, capillary limit, boiling limit etc. All these parameters affect the performance of heat pipes. These parameters may be inter–reliant or independent. Therefore, performance analysis of heat pipes makes it necessary to look into the performance parameters and their interdependence so that their role in technology development may be fully understood. Keywords: heat pipe, limit, fluid, heat transfer

INTRODUCTION The heat pipe is a simple device used for very high rate heat transfer. It is a hollow tube closed at both ends and partially filled with a liquid of very low boiling or evaporating point. One end of the tube is dipped or fitted in the warm region and the other end of the heat pipe is immersed in the cold region. The primary objective of a heat pipe is to transfer heat from warmer to the colder region with very high rate of heat transfer. As the rate of heat conduction is very high therefore, it is possible to transfer heat even if the temperature difference is very low. A typical heat pipe can be divided into three main sections:   

Evaporator section Adiabatic section Condenser section

The working of a heat pipe is based upon the working of these three sections. In a heat pipe heat added at the evaporator section which vaporizezes working fluid even if temperature is not very high. Due to evaporation of liquid a pressure difference between evaporator section and condenser section is maintained. This pressure difference drives the vapour through the adiabatic section. The condenser section is at lower temperature. Heat is transferred from vapors to colder section. In this way heat transfer at a very high rate is achieved. The capillary effect of the wick structure, fixed all

around the inner wall of hollow pipe, forces condensed liquid from condenser to evaporator section. At present a lot of research is going on in decision making in design and selection of heat pipe. Design and development of new heat pipe is one of them. A lot of different studies have been performed in decision making also. Dev et al[1] developed a computational methodology for the assessment of dual pressure non–reheat combined–cycle power plant with change in drum pressure of waste heat recovery boiler. A GTA (graph theoretic approach) based methodology was also proposed by Dev et al[2] for the evaluation of combined cycle power plant. Thermodynamic analysis of a combined heat and power system was carried out to study the effect of different parameters on power plant performance by Dev et al.[3] Attri et al[4–57] developed methodology based upon ISM and graph theory for the performance evaluation of different types of the systems. Dev et al[5,6] developed a methodology for the analysis of combined cycle power plant performance based upon the combination of graph theory and matrix method. For the performance evaluation CCPP system was divided into six sub-systems.[7,8] These sub-systems were developed in such a way that all of them were
