Modified Sewing Machine Workstation Design by Using Taguchi Approach Shubham Ashokrao Netnaskar*
Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Rajendra Gode Institute of Technology and Research, Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, Amravati, Maharashtra, India
ABSTRACT The study was based on design of experiment using Taguchi Orthogonal Array with three parameters namely height of sewing machine table, angular movement of sewing machine table and sliding movement of sewing machine table considered for experimentation. An orthogonal Array of L9 experimental design was adopted & 3 angles namely trunk angle, head angle and neck angle was measured for each experimental run. Then the reading for female & male operator was separated & the qualitative analysis has been done on the basis of operator’s opinion. From this qualitative analysis the optimize position for sewing machine operator has been determined so that operators can work longer without any stress or fatigue at back.(i.e. Risk of musculoskeletal disorder would be lower). Keywords: sewing machine, taguchi method, ergonomics, musculoskeletal disorder.
INTRODUCTION Today, corporate work spaces are ergonomically designed, which simply means body friendly. Millions of dollars are spent each year on repetitive motion injuries, forcing companies to address the comfort and health of their workers. Ergonomics are very important when it comes to sewing since poor posture and awkward positions will result in early fatigue and pain in the neck, shoulders, and back. The purpose of this project was to look at conditions in the clothing industry to find out how these injuries start and how they can be prevented. Researchers identified many features in clothing plants that could be improved to prevent injuries including: The project’s final report brings together all of the information gained from this research. This report focuses on the potential ergonomic problems and solutions that were identified in plant. We
hope this report can be used to initiate changes in the workplace by creating a starting point for discussion and stimulating ideas on how conditions in our plants can be improved. What Is “Ergonomics”? Ergonomics is a topic that affects us all; yet few of us have a good understanding of what the term actually means or realize how it affects us. Ergonomics is a science that focuses on designing a job for the worker. An ergonomically designed job would ensure that a taller worker had enough space to safely perform his or her job and also that a shorter worker could reach all of his or her tools and products without reaching beyond a comfortable and safe range. The opposite to this, and what typically happens in the workplace, is that a worker is forced to work within the confines of the job or workstation that is

Increasing an Overall Equipment Effectiveness Visibility and Analyzing in a Manufacturing Industry K.S. Arun*, B.K. Kanchan, G. Prabha, D. Rajenthirakumar PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India
ABSTRACT This paper tries to evaluate the OEE of machines in a valve manufacturing and identifies the main loss elements of the process. An application had been created for continuous data collection. OEE data on machine performance is an initial key point to understand the equipment losses and establish improvement to eliminate them. The results are compared with world class level. Result of the research demonstrates that although the OEE coefficient of the investigated process is not meeting the world class level, however with the continuous improvement, performance of the machine can be acceptable. Keywords: lean manufacturing, overall equipment effectiveness, spread sheet
INTRODUCTION OEE is an effective tool to benchmark, analyze, and improve your production process. The OEE tool gives you the ability to measure your machines for productivity improvements. OEE not only measures these inefficiencies but groups them into three categories to help you analyze the machine and have a better understanding of the manufacturing process. Here is a list of common concerns of many manufacturing companies: Reducing Bottlenecks – Increase Throughput Implementing Machine Operator Training Reducing Machine Setup Time Improving Machine Reliability – Implement Preventive Maintenance Maximizing Optimal Run Rates and Capacity Eliminating Down Time – Provide Down Time Reason Codes.
Putting this tool in place to address these concerns and improve the manufacturing process can be very time consuming and costly. To reduce that cost, Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) Spread sheet has been designed that is used to help with this process. The spread sheet allows the whole plant to be involved in the process of improving OEE. From the machine operator, production manager to the plant manager, this production monitoring information can help everyone to come to a solution. The bottom line for all employees should be to reduce production losses and build profitable products. The spread sheet provides production managers and machine operators with the necessary real time information to make crucial decisions about the effectiveness of the production process. Need for Analysis The company is facing a low production rate and high lead time in comparison to its competitors. Estimation shows that

Tool Selection and Cost Estimation for CAV Manufacturing C. Chinglenthoiba*, V. Balaji, B. Abbas, A. Madhan Kumar
Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mahendra Engineering College Namakkal, Affiliated to Anna University, Chennai, India
ABSTRACT Air compressor is designed to compress air to higher pressure and harness this potential energy source and is powered by an air engine and stored in a tank. Compressed air or pneumatic device is therefore characterized by a high power-to-weight or power-to-volume ratio. Instead of mixing fuel with air and burning it in the engine to drive pistons with hot expanding gases, compressed air vehicles (CAV) use the expansion of compressed air to drive their pistons. Keywords: compressed air technology, cost estimation, tool
INTRODUCTION A compressed-air vehicle (CAV) is powered by an air engine, using compressed air, which is stored in a tank. Instead of mixing fuel with air and burning it in the engine to drive pistons with hot expanding gases, CAV use the expansion of compressed air to drive their pistons. One manufacturer claims to have designed an engine that is 90 percent efficient.[1–5]

Electrical Discharge Machining in Modern Manufacturing Applications Priyanka Garg*
University of Madras, Tamil Nadu, India
ABSTRACT Several types of non-traditional machining processes have been developed to meet extra required machining conditions. When these processes are employed properly, they offer many advantages over non-traditional machining processes. Electrical Discharge Machining is the most widely accepted non-conventional process in the manufacturing industry. Keywords: aerospace industry, dielectric fluids, electrical discharge machining, nontraditional machining process
INTRODUCTION Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is one of the most widely used nontraditional machining processes. The main attraction of EDM over traditional machining processes such as metal cutting using different tools and grinding is that this technique utilizes thermoelectric process to erode undesired materials from the workpiece by a series of discrete electrical sparks between the workpiece and the electrode. A picture of EDM machine in operation is shown in Figure 1.[1–4]
The traditional machining processes rely on harder tool or abrasive material to remove the softer material whereas nontraditional machining processes such as EDM uses electrical spark or thermal energy to erode unwanted material in order to create desired shape. So, the hardness of the material is no longer a dominating factor for EDM process. A schematic of an EDM process is shown in Figure 2, where the tool and the workpiece are immersed in a dielectric fluid.

Manufacturing Process Involved in Development of Medical Devices S. Sharmila*
University of Madras, Chennai, India
ABSTRACT The trend in medical device design and manufacturing is toward smaller, more portable products that require more advanced components, manufacturing technologies and automation techniques. Medical products covering the range of patient monitors, drug delivery systems, therapeutic devices, and life assist devices all are shrinking in size while increasing in performance and features. The present article describes about quality improvement methods applied in manufacturing of medical devices. Keywords: drug delivery, lean manufacturing, medical device, packaging, sterilization
INTRODUCTION Medical device manufacturing includes all aspects of the fabrication of a medical device, from designing a manufacturing process to scale-up to ongoing process improvements. It also includes the sterilization and packaging of a device for shipment. Medical devices play an important role in the field of medical and health technology, and encompass a wide range of health care products. Many studies specify a medical device as any instrument, apparatus, appliance, software, material or other article, whether used alone or in combination, including the software intended by its manufacturer to be used specifically for diagnostic and/or therapeutic purposes and necessary for its proper application, intended by the manufacturer to be used for human beings. The design and manufacture of medical devices brings together a range of articles and case studies dealing with medical device R&D.[1]
LEAN CONCEPT FOR QUALITATIVE MANUFACTURING OF MEDICAL DEVICES Throughout the manufacturing process, medical device makers strive to be faster and more efficient, but they also wish to be responsible corporate citizens. Thus, manufacturing demands constant insight into renewable resources, sustainable materials, equipment that is more energy efficient, and methods to reduce waste creation. Solutions to these issues can come in the form of improved processes, technological advances in machines or equipment components, or safer/more reliable materials. The same principles apply to the packaging process. Many companies call these ideals ‘lean’ manufacturing, which is considered an industry best practice: eliminating any activity, process, or material that does not add value for which a customer will pay. Still, while speed and cost-savings are vital to successful manufacturing, quality control is of the utmost importance – particularly as medical device market
