Jesse Ferguson
July 22, 2011
Jesse Ferguson is a folk musician born and raised in Cornwall, Ontario. He grew up in a musical family and learned guitar from his father. His love of Celtic music, in particular, was nurtured in the region’s pubs, town fairs and at the Glengarry Highland Games. He was particularly influenced by local bands like Haggis, the Crofters, Hadrian’s Wall and the Glengarry Bhoys. These bands showed that traditional music could be relevant to today’s society and that it provided ample scope for innovation in the form of fusion sounds. Cont. on page 4
Jesse will be performing at Schnitzels European Flavours (158 Pitt St., Cornwall) on Thursday, July 28, 9pm-1am (no cover charge) and at the Glengarry Highland Games (Maxville, ON) on Friday, July 29, 2pm (in the Metcalfe Centre).

Eye on Society
by Jason Setnyk
The Cultural Plan was released! It recommends amongst other things that SD&G get an Arts and Cultural Centre. This is excellent news! The study itself was expensive to tell us essentially what we already knew, however this report was necessary to move the process forward. I know a few people are advocating the business side of an Arts and Culture Centre, however I hope that the main stakeholders, the Artists of SD&G are well represented if an Arts Council is indeed created. We only have one chance to make an arts and cultural centre, and we need to do it right! One figure in the Cultural Plan study surprised me! Literary Arts in SD&G exceeds the provincial average! According to the Cultural plan there may be cultural tourism opportunities by having a Literary Festival. I am proud to be the Seeker Choice Literary Artist of the Year and a part of the literary community here in Cornwall. Unlike competitive sports, there are few opportunities for artists to receive acknowledgment for their creative works and talent, especially in literary arts. Jason McNamara who won the award for Visual Artist of the Year had one of his photos showcased on the cover of Cornwall Living Magazine, and Melanie and the General Electyk who won the award for Music of the Year played Lift-off, but there are few opportunities for Literary Artists to showcase their work. I am very happy for Jason McNamara and Melanie and the General Electyk, and that some artists are getting their talents showcased. They deserve it! I think support for Literary Arts is long over due, and I am pleased by the recommendation of the report. I think a Literary Festival would be awesome! If there is enough interest, I would gladly volunteer or even help to organize such a festival. Free Download! You can download a free demo of my book "Anarchy and Heartbreak" which came out 11 months ago. This demo features a few samples of my poetry, aphorisms, and reflections. However if you want the entire book you will have to purchase a hard copy from me. Download your free demo here: http://www.lulu.com/product/ebook/anarchyand-heartbreak---free-demo/16219927
THE ENVIRONMENT I recently bought a new bike at Bicycle World. They had excellent customer service, really good products, and great prices. I have enjoyed biking this summer! Our bike trails are very scenic and picturesque. I especially enjoy biking from St. Lawrence College to Gray's Creek and back or from the College to Power Dam and back. It is very peaceful and it is great exercise! I have seen some of my friends on the trails this summer, and I would recommend the bike path to anyone. It is truly a green gem in our community.

JESSE FERGUSON
ARTS, CULTURE, AND POLITICS
While he has had an interest in singing since he was very young, his first instrument was the mandolin, followed by the guitar. But he wasn’t content to stop there—Jesse is always curious about other instruments and techniques for playing. He’s even built some instruments: a biscuit-tin mandolin made from a cookie tin, scrap wood and sewing needle frets, and recently a more polished piece—a mountain dulcimer (a stringed instrument native to the Appalachian mountain region of the USA). Experimentation aside, his main instruments for performance are the guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and bodhran (the traditional Irish hand drum).
PERFORMANCE HISTORY: Jesse has performed solo and with other musicians in “pick-up bands.” He’s played festivals, highland games and pubs in cities like Cornwall, Ottawa, Miramichi, Campbellton, Moncton, Fredericton, and Sydney, Nova Scotia, where he currently teaches at Cape Breton University. Like any true folk musician, Jesse is willing to play anywhere he’s welcome, from busking on city street corners to retirement homes to formal performances at pubs and more prestigious venues like the Fredericton Playhouse or the Glengarry Highland Games. To him, folk music isn’t about ego—it’s about bringing the music into everyday life and inviting the audience to be active in the experience.
SONGWRITING AND RECORDINGS: Most often, Jesse performs a mix of Celtic, classic rock and original songs. He’ll tailor the set list to the venue to ensure the audience is happy. When he writes original pieces, he taps into his interest in poetry, which culminated in the publication of a full-length book Harmonics (2009). His first album, New Old Songs, was released in 2009 and can be purchased at www.cdbaby.com/cd/fergusonjesse. This CD of Celtic music was recorded and mastered by Jesse, and he performs all vocals and instrumentals on it. New Old Songs has sold hundreds of copies around the world and has aired on radio and podcasts. He also posts videos of traditional and contemporary music on youtube (youtube.com/BardofCornwall) as The Bard of Cornwall, a name that expresses his pride in his hometown. His youtube videos have been watched over 2.5 million times by people from around the globe.
UPCOMING PERFORMANCES: As part of a short summer tour, Jesse will perform music and lead two workshops on traditional Scottish song at the New Brunswick Highland Games in Fredericton, NB (July 22 and 23). Then he’ll give two
performances in Ontario: the first at Schnitzels European Flavours (158 Pitt St., Cornwall) on Thursday, July 28, 9pm-1am (no cover charge), and the second will be a short set at the Glengarry Highland Games (Maxville, ON) on Friday, July 29, 2pm (in the Metcalfe Centre). He keeps an up-to-date list of his gigs on his youtube channel page and on his facebook fan page: www.facebook.com/bardofcornwall. Booking information is also available on those sites.

Remove form heat and allow to cool. • Prepare the pesto. With the motor running, pour in the hemp oil through the feed tube and process until the mixture is well combined, but still grainy. Pour the pesto into a small bowl and set aside. Wash the food processor bowl. • Add 1/2 of the cooked, cooled lentils to the food processor bowl along with the cooled, cooked quinoa, breadcrumbs, egg , 2 garlic cloves, Dijon mustard, ground cumin, juice of 1/2 a lemon and salt and pepper to taste. WARM BRIE AND ALMOND CROSTINI WITH HARVEST APPLE CHUTNEY You can prepare this recipe, up to the point of baking a day ahead. Just cover and keep in the fridge.
THE CHUTNEY 1 large green apple, cored and cut into chunks 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar 1/4 cup chopped white onion (we sell this bulk 1 tbsp. butter 1/3 cup red pepper jam or 1 tsp. very finely minced, peeled, fresh ginger red jalepeno jelly 1 tbsp. currants (we sell these) 1 small, 8 oz. round of brie cheese 20 to 24 - 1/4" thick diagonal slices of a rustic skinny baguette 3/4 cup sliced almonds, skins on (we sell these) 3 tbsp. thinly sliced chives METHOD; • In a food processor, pulse the apple and onion until they are chopped into 1/4" to 1/3" pieces. • In a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Saute the apple, onion and minced ginger for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the apple and onion are just tender. Add the apple cider vinegar, jam and currants and bring to a boil. Let the mixture boil for about 2 minutes, until the mixture looks chutney-like. Set aside to cool. • Pre-heat the oven to 450 degrees F. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray or lightly oil it. • Cut the brie into 1/4" thick slices, sized to cover about 3/4's of a baguette slice. • Spread the sliced almonds in a flat dish. Press the brie onto the bread slices. Now dip the bread, face down into the almonds, allowing the almond slices to stick on to the brie cheese. • Arrange the bread face up on the prepared baking sheet. • Bake until the brie softens and the nuts are lightly toasted. This will take about 4 to 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and top each slice with a dollop of chutney and a sprinkle of chives. Serve hot. Enjoy!

conscious, to be aware that you sense a change occurring. Secondly be curious and ask yourself, and your higher power if you ascribe to the idea of the Universe, what it all means. Third, watch for the roadSIGNS that are appearing all around you. This is where being aware and paying attention becomes very important. Forth, relax, be in the energy of change; embrace it and go with the flow.
roadSIGNS by Betty Healey
Growing Pains pinpoint exactly what it is, you hesitate because it is difficult to name. You have a sense that you are approaching a new junction in your life, perhaps related to career, relationships, or simply how you are choosing to live every day. It is almost like holding your breath. I refer to these moments as growing pains. You may be thinking, “I haven’t had growing pains since I was a teenager.” Well look again. Take a glance back over your life and ask yourself, when has my life changed directions in some way or another. I sincerely hope your response is not “NEVER’. In my baby boomer generation there was a notion which I really never understood and that was one job, one set of lifelong friends, perhaps even one home. Is it only me or was that the ultimate fallacy. And it has not been my experience.
Growing pains – this is what makes life an interesting journey. Be honest – would you have it any other way? Welcome aboard the change train. You might as well come along for the ride ‘cause with or without you the train is pulling out of the station. It is time to change, time to stretch and yes, time to grow in ways you had not even considered. WeHoo! Until next time…Betty Betty Healey is the roadSIGNS Coach, coaching people back to life! WHAT GOD CREATED I am not judging you if it was yours but you have to admit that somewhere along the way your life changed course with or without you and you were forced to look at life differently than what was once promised to you. Certainly as time goes on, and each subsequent generation enters the workforce, these promises have changed significantly. Now we prepare young adults for the possibility of 3-4 careers over a lifetime, frequent changes in geographical location, and virtual relationships through social networking. It is rapidly becoming a different world. Growing pains. These describe the external variables. The landscape within you is another world of shifts and changes. Who among you would say that you are the same person you were ten years ago or even yesterday. Every moment of every day adds a new experience to your life. It would be foolish for us to think that we are not changed by life’s events. And why would we want to be static anyway when life is a dynamic process. Changes can be trying and change can be exciting and for some reason all change is perfect. It may not feel so at the time, but let me assure you that everything within your life occurs for a reason. Growing pains. But what do you do with all this growth, with this sense that something inside you is changing. Do you have control over it? Can you give this change within you direction? Absolutely. The first step is to choose to be

On the first day, God created the dog and said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years." The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?" and God agreed...... On the second day, God created the monkey and said, "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span." The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?" And God agreed...... On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years." The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?" And God agreed again...... On the fourth day, God created humans and said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years." But the human said, "Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?" "Okay," said God. "You asked for it." So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family.. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone. Your Smile from

June 12, 2011 was a very exciting day for our church. It was our first Sunday in our new building at 949 Mohawk Drive. It was clear that everyone appreciated what God had done. After meeting for over 19 years at the Best Western Parkway Inn it was great to know that we now had a home of our own. It is amazing when we think back of all the work that went on for two months as we renovated what was once known as Sir John Johnson school. We have been blessed with not only a well constructed building but also 6 acres of land. Our church leadership will be meeting to decide upon the correct vision for our future. We have been entrusted to accomplish what our Lord has planned and we are convinced that He will guide us on our next steps of faith. We want to say how much we appreciate all of those who gave of their time, talents and treasures to fulfill the goal that we were

Article and photographs by Jason Setnyk Cornwall Lift-Off 2011 featured headline bands like Collective Soul and Kim Mitchell, fireworks, carnival rides, and much more. Tens of thousands of people attended the festivities in the park. To sum up this years festivities, I decided to ask Rob Seguin and others their thoughts and recollections about this year's Lift-Off. Here is what they had to say: Lift-Off Festival Entertainment Direct Rob Seguin says, "Lift-Off 2011 was a phenomenal success! Thanks to everyone who supported and attended Cornwall's signature event. Give yourself a pat on the back because we did it together. Time to rest now. See you in 2012!" Melanie McDonald of the The General Electryk says, "Lift off was an amazing experience this year, while we were playing the balloons were flying right over the crowd. That was special! Big ups to the organizers for another great year. And the weather couldn't have been better! I met Kim Mitchell, he's a lovely man. Really enjoyed his set. Winston Marley sounded great too. I had an epic weekend." Graham Greer says, "We had a great experience, as usual. Many folks approached as the evening wore on, both to tell me they enjoyed the show and to say that my son Liam charmed them into buying CDs. He's quite the young entrepreneur. The festival appeared to be very well-attended this year, and the weather could not have been more cooperative. All good all around I would say." Shelley Harley-Green of Flipside says, “What a wonderful show of community support”, as I was watching the audience some miming the words to the songs, others dancing or swaying to the music. Just the fact that they were out in the scorching sun on a Thursday night at suppertime to watch a local act perform speaks volumes to me. Way to go Cornwall!” Joel Plamondon of Winston Marley says, “I had a great experience playing at Lift-Off, great stage, great sound, professional crew and volunteers. What a beautiful day for people to come out and hear us display our original material. Whether they had known we were playing or not, I just hope everyone enjoyed our set.” The weather was great, people had fun, the $30,000 loan was paid back to the city. In conclusion, it was a very successful year for Lift-Off.

And it's quite a transition from the Chinese cafes and restaurants that were effectively the first "ethnic" eateries in small-town Canada going back even to the late nineteenth century. Most of these so-called Chinese places during this period of time were hyper-Canadian in their efforts not to tease Canadian palates unduly with anything alien or exotic. Their offerings remained resolutely Western, and if Chineseness strayed onto the menu, it was thoroughly worked over to function within the imagined limits of non-Chinese tastes.
Moon is a veritable melting pot for different regional cuisines and their corresponding representative dishes: General Tao Chicken from China, Indian Red Curried Chicken, Japanese Sushi, and Pad Thai all served up as an all-youcan-eat buffet for both lunch and dinner. The focus was also not on fancy decor or a romantic atmosphere: the cooking and the price were the thing. The resulting compromise was often an unhappy one: brightly-lit restaurants without much style, offering almost identical choices of boring food and competing with each other on price.
