Hockey has been one of Cornwall's favoured sports since the 1920s, successfully replacing Lacrosse. Our most famous team was the multiple Memorial Cup winning Cornwall Royals here from 1956 to 1992, and our most infamous was the fantastically expensive Cornwall Aces 1993 to 1996.
The senior Cornwall Flyers, 1937 - 38, Allan Cup finalists. Team members were Floyd Perras, Kirk McCann, Bill Meloche, Conny Brown, Dick Proulx, Mike McMahon, Farrand Gillie, Harvey McClelland, Fred Gardner, Jim Utman, Vince Godin, Ab MacDonald, Don Penniston (coach), and Fred MacAteer. Coffee Grinds by Jason Setnyk
Two more join the Provincial race! Two new candidates have joined the Provincial race in SDSG. Darcy Neal Donnelly who ran as a Libertarian in the last Federal Election, will run again as a Libertarian provincially. Justin Reist from Toronto Ontario will be attending Carleton University in Ottawa this Fall of 2011, and he will also be running as the SDSG candidate for the Ontario Green Party. Donnelly and Reist join the race with Mark A. MacDonald of the Liberals, Elaine MacDonald of the NDP, and Jim McDonnell of the Conservatives. It's not easy being Green! Despite 354,000 people voting for the Ontario Green Party in 2007, once again the Broadcast consortium has made an undemocratic decision not to include Mike Schreiner in the debates. Not only should Schreiner be included, we should have more debates! Ontario voters deserve better than this!
Who isn't sensitive to poverty? I think there is a big misunderstanding by some people concerning what the Poverty Free Ontario campaign is all about. It's sad but interesting to know, about 800,000 people depend on Food Banks across Canada. About 20% have jobs or are collecting employment insurance but they can't afford both food and rent. Poverty is an issue that runs deep in our city, in our province, and in our country. That 20% statistic might be misleading, because nearly 40% of the 800,000 are children under the age of 18 and probably don't work or only work part time. The need for Food Banks is increasing, about a 25% increase over the past two years in Ontario, and we need good sound social policies and a strong fair economy to fix this problem. Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human rights says: “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself (herself ) and of his (her) family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his (her) control.” Therefore, poverty is a Violation of Inherent Human Dignity. To quote Nelson Mandela, "like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings."
parent and child have basic housing and that they do not go hungry. Governments also have a responsibility to end working poverty and to assure workers of a basic minimum wage above the poverty line. "The Government of Ontario should implement a statutory minimum wage framework that assures all year-long full-time workers (35 hours/week) sufficient earnings for a basic income 10% above poverty... and The Ontario government should phase-in a full housing benefit which would limit total rental costs to 30% of gross household budgets for all lower income adults and families." These are policies that will eliminate poverty and hunger. To quote Toronto Anglican Bishop Linda Nichols, “We don’t accept the argument that Ontario can’t afford to help the poor. That’s a morally bankrupt position. We live in a wealthy society. This is not about voting Liberal or Conservative or NDP or Green, this is about the Ontario Government creating good social and economic policies that eliminate poverty. The solution to eliminating poverty is not just 'creating jobs' or creating a 'social net'. The solution is two-fold. Economic development go hand-in-hand with social development. It's not one or the other, it's a partnership of both. A strong and diverse economy that generates decent paying jobs, and strong social polices that guarantee a liveable wage and assistance that help those in need will help eliminate poverty. Just one question to the health centre and Agape Centre: Who are we to vote for? The launch of the Poverty Free Ontario campaign is Thursday September 15th. There is going to be a debate, and all the candidates have been invited. The public is welcome to attend this event, listen to the candidates debate, ask questions, and people can make up their own minds! I for one will be participating in the Poverty Free Ontario campaign, I will attend the debates, I will vote, and yes I will take a 'Make Ontario Poverty Free' sign too! My name is Jason Setnyk, and these are my coffee grinds. Jason Setnyk is a local school teacher, journalist, artist, and community volunteer. Setnyk runs the Cornwall Underground blog, and is the founder and host of Cornwall's Rock for Charity and Rock the Vote. www.cornwallunderground.blogspot.com
One stat I read says that the poverty line for a lone parent with one child is $26,279 a year, but a single parent on Ontario Works with a young child gets $16,683 a year. That is $9,596 under the basic income gap. What impact does that have on families and children? People living in deep poverty may experience chronic hunger cycles and hardship. The Put Food in the Budget Campaign has been calling on the Ontario Government to introduce a $100/month Healthy Food Supplement for all adults on social assistance. Not a bad idea, considering, 60% of parents and single adults living in poverty were employed but with insufficient earnings to live above the poverty line. One third of all Canadian children live in families with full time, full-year hours of work. Full time work does not guarantee escaping poverty, and education does not guarantee escaping poverty either. 80% of low income parents in Canada completed high school, and 50% had some post secondary education. Fact: Canada along with the United States has the highest proportion of low-paid workers among major industrialized countries in the OECD. It's amazing how countries with so much wealth can also have so much poverty. According to the Poverty Free Ontario website, "The persistence of poverty reflects the absence of political will –it is the hallmark of a society without the ethical and moral foundations to ensure basic conditions of well-being for all. Poverty eradication means taking a structural approach to look at the adequacy of basic living conditions rather than relying on behavioural explanations that make the poor responsible for their poverty." The Provincial government has two key responsibilities for poverty eradication: Improving basic incomes through social assistance, and ensuring labour markets enable full time, full-year earners to live above poverty. Governments have to recognize that forms of social assistance have a continuing role to play in eradicating poverty. Newfoundland now provides welfare income to single parents with one child that is above the poverty line. This will ensure that both

Team Cornwall is an organization that started in the early 1990s by local business and professional people to promote the commercial, industrial, social and civic interest of our community. Now Cornwall has over 340 active members promoting the City. “The role of Team Cornwall is to serve as ambassadors of the City of Cornwall. You don't have to be in business, you just have to have a cup is half full attitude, and have positive things to say to help our city grow”, explains Latour. Why should people choose Cornwall? “The low cost of living, a safe environment, all the amenities of a large city, hardly no traffic, great place to raise a family, friendly, a bilingual work force, cost of setting up a businesses in this city is affordable, no development charges, and cheap electricity”, answers Latour. showcase our community," said Mayor Bob Kilger. "The A Morning Show is the number one rated morning broadcast in the Ottawa area, and Kurt Stoodley and his team have become good friends to the City." The broadcast will take place from the St. Lawrence Power Development Visitor Centre located on the banks of the St. Lawrence River in the west end of the City. The broadcast will conclude immediately before the first tee-off of the Mayor and Council / Team Cornwall Charity Golf Tournament.
CTV News at 6 to Broadcast Live from Cornwall on September 14th! The most-watched television program in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec is preparing to hit the road and deliver its supper hour newscast up close and personal from Cornwall on September 14th. Anchors Graham Richardson and Carol Anne Meehan will be joined by weathercaster J.J. Clarke and sports director Terry Marcotte for the CTV NEWS AT SIX "Hometown Tour". The popular newscast will broadcast live from Lamoureux Park along the St. Lawrence River in Downtown Cornwall. "We are doing the whole show on location," said Louis Douville, VicePresident and General Manager, CTV Ottawa. "Those who come to see our live broadcast will see everything we do in front of and behind the cameras. There is no better way to connect with the people who invite us into their homes each and every night, than to visit their communities in person from time to time." "We are very excited to have CTV Ottawa and the CTV NEWS AT SIX team back in Cornwall," said Bob Peters, Senior Economic Development Officer. "There are a lot of exciting things happening in Cornwall, and we're anxious to share our good news with people throughout the Nation's Capital, Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.

“This tournament has really grown to become one of the premiere networking events of the year,” said Gilles Latour, Chair of Team Cornwall. “The Mayor and Councillors are great partners and it is always great to get our team members out for a few fun hours on the links.”
Each team is encouraged to include at least one out-of-town golfer on their team. This is a great way to introduce out-of-town guest(s) to our community and allow them the opportunity to network with many local leaders. “The tournament offers a great opportunity for Team Cornwall members to showcase our community,” said Mayor Bob Kilger. “Over the past few years we’ve seen a lot of new investment in Cornwall, and sometimes the best way to show people what is happening here is to invite them down personally.” The proceeds of the tournament will go towards offsetting the costs of Team Cornwall’s ambassadorial efforts. The not-for-profit organization hosts a number of events throughout the year and maintains a popular website. In addition, Team Members travel the world to promote Cornwall, at their own cost. Once again, the Team Cornwall Golf event is sold-out.
CTV TO BROADCAST FROM CORNWALL! Also on Wednesday September 14th, the cast and crew of the A Morning Show will be leaving their Byward Market studios and broadcasting live from Cornwall Ontario. The show will be live on the air from 6 am to 10 am. "We're excited to get out on the road and connect directly with our viewers," said Kurt Stoodley, Co-Host of the A Morning Show. ART SEEKERS by Sandra Taylor Hedges
The Paucity Principal pau·ci·ty noun/pôsité paucities, plural "Paucity means "the presence of something in small or insufficient quantities or amounts; scarcity." In our game, it's one of the main principles." Robert Genn Artist, Robert Genn, is a big supporter of the power of paucity in an Artist’s work and I happen to agree with him and have been using it in my work for over 20 years, long before I knew there was a name for it. To put it into layman’s terms it would be the difference between a Robert Bateman painting and a Rembrandt drawing or a full orchestra playing and a simple flute. My mentor and friend Elaine Bigelow always referred to it as “Less is More, You don’t have to tell them everything”. For the main stream Art critiques and buyers this looks like unfinished work but I ask you when is a painting or anything creative finished? I say when the Artist say’s it is. This concept is not popular with galleries and those that do not appreciate art but it is the way I chose to paint and I encourage you to try out the idea no matter what your artistic discipline. As an artist I can tell my story in the way I chose, just as an author tells their story in the fashion they do. Even an Author knows that too much description within a story can be worse than not enough as the viewer becomes bored; there is no room for them to use their imagination.
When we leave out some of the information that we see in reality we now add a 4th dimension to the world, the dimension of “Perception of Content”. This powerful dimension allows the viewer or the listener to now become an active part in the art being created. When a line on a painting is left unfinished and is placed in a certain way the human eye will finish it, by doing this they are part of the process of painting, with out them it is incomplete. This is often used in stage production, when only key pieces of furniture or props are given to the actors to work with and the audience must imagine what the rest of the room would look like. The beauty of this process is the imaginary window the actor looks out can now become the viewer’s window at home and through this they are part of the performance. We, the artist, are no longer required to fill in all the information. Rembrandt showed us in his simple line drawings that as long as you are true to your self and sensitive to your subject the viewer will know what you have drawn. Singing without the benefit of an orchestra can be as hauntingly beautiful as with. An actor holding his hand in a certain way and lifting it to their lips will allow you to believe the glass is there, half full or half empty. Which it is, is up to you.

Cornwall Represents At FanExpo Canada I am back from our annual pilgrimage to Fan Expo Canada and was pleased to see so many local residents were also part of this fantastic entertaining annual event. This is our second year attending the expo dedicated to Sci-Fi, Comics, Anime and the Horror genre. Approximately 20, 000 people attended Fan Expo in Toronto, where they had a chance to meet and mingle with stars of their favourite movies, tv shows, authors, artists and other enthusiastic fans. This event is known for bringing great celebrities, and also for the fan centric cosplaying, where people dress up as their favourite characters. Some of these costumes are so elaborate, that they started working on them the day after the previous year’s show. They are inventive, accurate and detailed. This is an opportunity to release your inner “geek” and have a great time. The ticket holders as well as exhibitors and stars, love seeing what creative wonders they will see and the cosplayers patiently pose for countless photos. It is awe inspiring. My son opted not to wear a costume of a known character, he did however decide to dress as one of the characters of his own creation; Demongelic. Thanks to Rony at Shorteez Urban Hair, Brad has luminescent green highlights to match his Damon character. We both also wore Demongelic t-shirts throughout the 4 days to help promote his upcoming book and merchandise. It was very well received, in fact, he returned home with stacks of business cards, Facebook and Twitter requests and some great advice. I have toyed with the idea of Brad joining Team Cornwall, and after this event, will probably pursue it. I don’t think there is a person that we met that didn’t know we were from Cornwall Ontario. Brad proudly declared each time he met a celebrity, an artist, a fellow fan and the many exhibitors.
The highlights for him were the shout out from Teddy and AJ from Space TV’s Innerspace, Getting complemented on his awesome green hair and his October character by Eliza Dushku from Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame, and meeting the cast of Showcase’s Lost Girl. Brad waited patiently to see the star Anna Silk again. You see, last year when we first attended Fan Expo, she was there promoting her new show that was airing in the fall. He chatted with her and the writers, and showed some of his artwork and told her he was writing a book, which she encouraged him to do. Well he was astounded that she remembered him. He gave her a promo pack with some photos and the first chapter and all the cast was supportive. It was amazing! I also have to credit this incredibly talented Canadian cast. They held a Q&A session to talk about the show and then signed autographs in the main area. The lineup for the autographs looped so many times, attendance was much higher than anticipated, and to not disappoint their fans extended their time double what it was supposed to be and did not charge for the autographs or photos. Talk about class. Brad and I were not the only people from Cornwall. Randy from Fantasy Realm and his family also attended and is the reason I first found out about this fantastic event. I also met several people from Cornwall on the train and throughout the event. In all about 30 locals attended and many more want to go in the future. The event offers something for everyone, it is all in the planning. I am pleased that we were able to attend a workshop with the Writers Guild of Canada, and Comic Book Productions and Marketing one. I was disappointed that I missed out on seeing the costumes from Star Wars panel but did see the gigantic robots from the upcoming movie Real Steel. If you do attend, you must be patient, long lines, crowded aisles and waiting periods are expected. But it is worth it. You get a peak in to a fantasy world which can be a great escape for a little while. I almost nixed our plans to attend, but Brad looks so forward to it, and the advice he received from fellow artists and writers and the general outpouring of talent is priceless. Where else can you go and see Malcolm MacDonnell as he walks through the crowds, meet up with Kevin Sorbo as he exits through a doorway, have a conversation with voice actors and makeup artists, see Freddy Kruger without the creepy makeup and signature claws, and meet William Shatner. It was truly memorable. Follow Kris Ward’s blog at :http://kriscrossroads.wordpress.com/

The upcoming 2011-12 season marks the 20th year of Cornwall Colts hockey. In that generation local hockey fans have been witness to some great Junior “A” hockey. The Colts have won 4 Bogart Cups (CJHL Championships) while making it to the final 3 other times including last season’s heartbreaking loss to the Pembroke Lumber Kings. Jean Payette, Marc Evans, Al Wagar, Brent Loney and Ian MacInnis have built a legacy that continues to produce quality players and people. Chad Kilger, Eric Meloche, Kent McDonell, Cam Barker, Yan Danis and Jesse Winchester are six Colts’ grads that have worked their way to the NHL. They’ll also be the first to brag that they played for the Colts. Dozens of other players continue to ply their trade all over the world including Europe, Australia and the minor pro system in the U.S. Names like Hugo Boisvert, Jamie Herrington, Jeff Legue, Broke McBride, BJ Pelkey, Scott Champagne and Jason Lepine continue to represent and make Colts fans proud of our history.

20 YEARS OF COLTS HOCKEY
Several others such as Jeremy Leroux, Phillipe Roy and Brendon Knight have moved on to a second careers in coaching or management and so it goes. The saying goes “Time flies when you’re having fun” well, time must be going at breakneck speed because it’s been one heck of a first 20 years with a lot of great memories. Here’s to 20 more years of graduates, alumni and memories for the Cornwall Colts.
Know Your Business … Know Your Competitors Researching both your market and your potential competitors before you open your business is important, but you should also continue to do research after you open. Successful customer research will provide you with information on your typical customer, the demographics of your customer base, an outline of their needs, their buying habits, the type of customer service they expect, product or service demand and quality, price and more. Although you may think that you already know who your customers will be, or who they already are, you must remember that the market and consumer trends will continually change, and you must be aware of these changes. Research will help you to determine important information such as trends in new products, the time of year when certain products are more in demand, what type of things will influence a customer’s decision to purchase or not, if your competitor is undercutting your prices or offering a much desired service that you do not. All of these things will affect the potential income for your business. There are two types of research – primary and secondary. Primary research is information that you collect yourself by conducting questionnaires, or focus groups. This information is gathered from your potential customers. Secondary research is information that has been collected and possibly published by another organization such as Statistics Canada, Canada Ontario Business Service, the Public Library, trade journals and other government agencies. Both types of research are vital in assisting you to make important decisions that will contribute to the current, and future, success or failure of your business. Chances are your business concept or plans may change as the results of your research unfold. You may find that certain products or services are not in demand as you had anticipated, or the reverse may be true. You also may discover that there are other products and/or services that are increasing in demand that you could easily add to your business offerings, and thereby create a new revenue stream. In short, to be successful you must know your business and you must know your competitors … “Knowledge is power “.Candy Pollard, Business Consultant

REAL ESTATE in the City ...
NEWS with NADA The Buying Process: What Every Home Buyer Should Know Buying a home is the largest purchase you will make in your lifetime. There are many steps you must go through in order to purchase a home. For the next few articles I will discuss each step a buyer will experience in order to purchase their home. This week we will take a look at getting Pre-Approved, which is your first step when looking for your property.
Getting a Pre-Approval is one of the most important steps in purchasing a home. A Pre-Approval gives you a idea of what you can afford. This prevents you from falling in love with a home that you are unable to afford or, in some cases once a Buyer was PreApproved, they discovered they could afford more than they had expected. The most important advice I could give a Buyer when getting Pre-Approved is, 'Don't be afraid of the bank!' Many Buyers are afraid of dealing with the banks, but you must remember the banks are there to help you and they want your business. I always find it best to work with a Mortgage broker who you are comfortable with, this way you are not afraid to ask any questions or concerns you may have.

YES - BIKERS DO GO TO CHURCH! More pics form Members of CMC - Canadian Motorcycle Cruisers who travelled to Ottawa to the Bikers’ Church a few weeks ago.
So what will the banks be looking for to be Pre-Approved? They will need to know where you work, how long you have been working there for, and proof of your income (This can be such things as a T4 or a pay stub). The banks will also be looking for all your personal loans, this will include items such as car loans, credit cards or any student loans. This will help to decide what you can afford. So how much of a down payment will you need? At a minimum you will need 5% of the purchase price of the property as a down payment. When your down payment is less than 20% of the purchase price, you will have to also purchase Mortgage Insurance (Also known as CMHC, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation). The Mortgage Insurance will be added into your mortgage and you likely wont even notice it is there. Most first-time home buyers only put down 5% of the purchase price of their home as a down payment, it is very common. Once you have been pre-approved the buying process can begin. This is when you can begin shopping for your new home! This is where the fun begins. Next week we will look at The Home Search and what you can expect. A quote to send you off with for this week, “Real estate cannot be lost or stolen, nor can it be carried away. Purchased with common sense, paid for in full, and managed with reasonable care, it is about the safest investment in the world.”
Each week I will be answering a common question in real estate. If you have a questions which you would like to have answered you can e-mail it to me at nadakovinich@hotmail.com

RAGING GRANNIES SING AT LABOUR DAY Article and Photo by Jason Setnyk
Over 500 people, families, and workers attended the annual Labour Day celebrations at Lamoureux Park in downtown Cornwall. There was live music, dancing, a clown, magic show, and a train for children to ride. Many people were wearing their respective union tshirts, and some people were wearing Poverty Free Ontario buttons. Elaine MacDonald, who is President of the Cornwall & District Labour Council was one of the 'Raging Grannies' on stage singing songs about health care and fair wages.
SDSG Candidates participate in first debate - Provincial Election One Month Away! Article and Photo by Jason Setnyk Over a hundred people attended the first SDSG all candidates debate which took place on Wednesday September 7th at the Cornwall Legion. The event was hosted by the Cornwall & District Labour Council. Debating were Liberal candidate Mark A MacDonald, NDP candidate Elaine MacDonald, Progressive Conservative candidate Jim McDonell, and Libertarian candidate Darcy Neal Donnelly. Absent from the debate was Green Party candidate and Carleton University student Justin Reist. The format was an introduction, four questions, audience questions, and concluding statements. Debate topics ranged from P3S and Health Care to Housing and Poverty. Here are some quotes from each of the candidates during the debate. MARK MACDONALD is a former Cornwall City Councillor who ran for Mayor of Cornwall in 2010. He is a retired fire inspector, and a former Chair of the Cornwall & Area Housing Corporation. MacDonald explained his party's position. “Jim Brownell and the Ontario Liberal Party's policies have made Cornwall and SDSG a great community. It has shaped this riding for years to come. New hospitals, roads, and highways. It's not only infrastructure, it's a local economy that is booming. We give our children a strong start with full day kindergarten, and the Ontario Liberals environmental policies are making investors look at Ontario.” A part of the Liberal platform focuses on moving a strong Ontario economy forward. Mark MacDonald insists the Conservatives would move towards Private Health Care if elected, and that they have a 14 billion dollar hole in their budget. ELAINE MACDONALD is a Cornwall City Councillor, President of the Cornwall & District Labour Council, Co-Chair of the Cornwall Chapter of the Ontario Health Coalition, and a former school teacher at St. Lawrence High School. She explained some of the key elements of the NDP platform. “I am here to present the good news of the NDP platform to make life better, health care you need when you need it, and to take HST off of hydro, and more green choices too. Where everyone shares in common prosperity. Health Care is the legacy of every NDP member since Tommy Douglas”. The NDP's plan to pay for better health care, better education, and to pay the debt by 2018 comprises of rolling back corporate taxes to the 2010 rates. JIM MCDONELL is the Mayor of South Glengarry, Chair of the SD&G Community Features Development Corporation, a Past Chair of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, and a former Bell Canada Planner and Network Engineer. McDonell explains the Conservative position and his motivation to run for office. “I grew up in the best Ontario, now Ontario is stuck in the welfare rolls. The Ontario Liberal Government insults people with promises they won't keep. Dalton Tax Man McGuinty will keep raising taxes like a raccoon in your garbage, not bad animals, just the way they are”. The PC Party wants to remove the HST on Home Energy Bills, lower the tax burden of the middle class, cleaning up government waste, and investing in Health Care and Education. DARCY NEAL DONNELLY is a truck driver, and an entrepreneur. He explained the Libertarian platform. “I believe in political freedom and economic freedom. Our platform is to reduce government and reduce cost. More regulations mean more red tape. We want you to make your own money and to vote with your own money. Vote for less taxes”. Donnelly repeatedly stressed that governments don't solve problems, they create problems, and people need to find their own solutions and answers. More debates will take place in Cornwall and SDSG. The Election Day is Thursday October 6th 2011.

Article by Jason Setnyk
WELCOME TO THE FOURTH INSTALLMENT OF ASKING YOUTH QUESTIONS ABOUT THE UPCOMING PROVINCIAL ELECTION. Each week until the election, we have three local young people in their 20s (each of whom supports a different political party) answer some serious questions! Last week Jason Setnyk asked the participants about healthcare. This week’s question is about education.
QUESTION #4: The Liberals have given themselves an "A" for their record on Education. Do you agree with this assessment? What's right with our education system? Is there anything that could be improved in your opinion? CARILYNE HEBERT
AGE: 23 years old OCCUPATION: Volunteer Coordinator at a local non-profit organization PARTY SHE SUPPORTS: NDP An “A”, really? Did you know Ontario has the highest undergraduate tuition fees in Canada? An average undergraduate student debt in Ontario has doubled since the 1990s to about $26,000 per student, which is the highest in Canada. I wouldn’t think that would be something to be proud about. This really hits home for me. I am a recent graduate at St-Lawrence College. I now have a nicely framed piece of paper on the wall that in the end will have cost me about $25 000. It is so important to get a post-secondary education in today’s work force. It’s hard to find any kind of employment without it yet for so many people it is out of reach. Sure the government was happy to offer me OSAP, I’m going to pay interest on it for the next 15 years. If elected into government the Ontario NDP will tackle Ontario’s high tuition rates and help Ontarians like me deal with rising student debt. Also, I must mention the 33,000 elementary school students that are stuck on waiting lists for special education services. Unfortunately, the promise of a good education is not available to all in the same degree. The current liberal government did promise to fix the education funding formula but have failed to do so. Bottom line is we must ensure that the province’s schools are adequately funded to provide students the programs and services they need. The Ontario NDP will follow through with their plan and stand up for equal education for all.
I would agree that we are improving but we still must progress to ensure that we have a highly educated and skilled workforce heading into the future! I would grade the Liberals with a B+. I think all parties have seen the studies and agree that the implementation of a full day kindergarten program will become an essential part of our Ontario Education System. Studies have shown that full-day kindergarten better prepares students for Grade One, and gives them a better chance at finishing high school, going on to postsecondary education, and getting a good job. We also need to empower teachers in the classroom to allow them to ban cell phones in the classroom and teach programs such as phonics! They should be allowed to give out marks free from pressure to inflate grades, and write meaningful report cards. Because it’s never too early to start measuring student progress, we should reinstate the fall report card for elementary students; that was eliminated last year. Also, we need to utilize the many forms of technology that is available; such as e-texts or on-line learn to read. Also, parents could view the results of standardized test on-line and almost instantly More post-secondary spaces and programs need to be created and Universities and Colleges should be made to compete by offering remote programs to Cities such as Cornwall and smaller communities! This investment into Post-Secondary education has been needed for some time now.
students. Test scores have increased immensely, and more students are staying in school and graduating. In my opinion, one of the greatest things ever introduced by the Liberal government is full-day kindergarten. Ontario's 4 and 5 year olds have the best start possible because of this, and parents are saving money in childcare cost. More than 17,000 school renewal projects have been completed or are underway, to make sure schools in Ontario are at the highest standards of safety and kids are learning in great environments. Since 2003, 400 new schools have been built. The Liberals have always been set on making sure the young generation has every opportunity to learn and expand their education. They have also made sure nutrition standards in schools are in line with Canada's Food Guide, and have banned trans-fats from food and beverages sold in schools. The Liberal government most definitely deserves an "A" in education. Being reelected will only give the Liberals a chance to gain an A+.
NAZISH JANJUA AGE: 25 years old OCCUPATION: Business Administrator PARTY SHE SUPPORTS: The Liberals After eight years of Conservative rule, Ontario classrooms were in utter chaos. Cuts to public schools meant bigger class sizes, and there were also cuts to arts, physical education and music classes, and fewer librarians and guidance counsellors. The Conservatives picked fights with teachers which led to constant strikes. Twenty-six million school days were lost, and an entire generation went without after-school activities. Since 2003 under the Liberal government, early grades have smaller class sizes; over 90% of classes have 20 or fewer

Professionally Chilling With ... Toronto. And given the theme of Julyna, some would say the poor dissemination of information about it was just as well, and that it would best be left in the dark "down-there" rather than being run as an event again next year in July.
The thinking at Julyna was that if women inherently can't grow significant facial hair which can then be used in a fundraising context, why not do what the organizers saw as the next best thing; design the hair women grow "downthere" into all sorts of creations as part of a consciousness-raising campaign about cervical cancer.
What was Julyna? Julyna was a campaign held in conjunction with the Canadian Cancer Society to encourage Canadian women for the FUNDRAISING month of July to trim their pubic hair BELOW THE BELT into creative designs as part of a Julyna was a month-long campaign to solicit donations and to campaign in July, the news of raise awareness about cervical cancer. whose launch I missed The organizers of Julyna, in their because information about convoluted wisdom, drew inspiration the event I believe spread for the event from Movember. Some women’s health experts question the structure and the focus of a campaign, like Julyna, that links cancer to women’s sexuality and seems needlessly risque. Shaving your pubes into any one of a number of different shapes, critics claim, isn't going to bring serious discussion around the water cooler. And in the broader context of types of women's cancers, the use of lighthearted messages, sexual innuendo, and "I Heart

On the other hand, the provocative Julyna campaign may have a unique ability to reach women, especially young women, in what is to start with a very crowded and difficult to be noticed fundraising event market. Humour can also be a powerful psychological weapon - the Julyna campaign certainly has its jocular angle - in helping women to feel comfortable in talking about cervical cancer and about the related area of their anatomy. This should be the goal of any campaign to eradicate this form of cancer and, just maybe on the road through Julyna, we'll find an improved campaign to raise public consciousness about cervical cancer.
