the political arena can get downright vicious. Even in a small town like Cornwall, or smaller areas such as, say, South Stormont, where friendly faces normally meet and greet passers bys, knives fly low when elections are on the horizon. Facebook is swarming with hateful comments coming from all sides of the fence and as we get closer to election day, it’s only bound to get worse. The present council is definitely under fire for many of its actions and from what I read, in South Stormont, Tammy Heart seems to be running with a target on her back. It’s ugly.

personal interactions with many of the candidates, some good, some not so good, but it is not our place to relate what our personal experiences were to the general public because it is just that: personal. And our judgement of people tend to be clouded by those experiences, so it is important to simply ask questions, albeit though ones, and let readers make their own conclusions. Many debates will be happening over the next few weeks. Please attend. It’s the only way you will be able to make an informed decision come election day. And please go vote! It’s not only your right, it’s your civic duty.

Julia Lucio, Editor in chief

I’d like to think people can stay civilized, that they would rather focus on showing the world what they, themselves, can do for our communities rather than take the low road and try to convince citizens how despicable their opponents are.

Media outlets tend to take sides and push their own agenda. I have said it before, and I will say it again, I believe the job of the media in an election campaign is to objectively report and give equal opportunity to all candidates running, whether we like them or not. We’ve had

Smart greens brings Fresh Produce year round - When it comes to fresh food sometimes you have to think inside the box. Two Cornwall entrepreneurs are doing just that by using an upcycled sea container to grow food – right in their

neighbourhood. Eric Bergeron and Eric Amyot have launched Smart Greens, a company that grows fresh greens in a hydroponic farm built within a shipping container. The inaugural farm is located in the heart of downtown Cornwall – within walking distance to several restaurants and grocery stores. It is the first of its kind in Canada. “You can taste the difference between produce that has just been harvested and produce that has sat on a truck for two weeks,” said Smart Greens co-founder Eric Amyot. “Our produce will be sold the same day the plants are harvested. Added advantages being that we help reduce shipping costs, fuel consumption and are increasing food safety in our region.” united way 2 0 1 4 campaign kick off - The United Way recently held its 2014 campaign kick off breakfast at the Royal Canadian Legion and announced this year’s goal of $707,070. A fundraiser was held for local mother Danielle Ouimet. In total, $608.25 was raised. “Every little bit helps,” said Ouimet, who is battling cervical cancer $608.25. “That will help cover gas, parking for appointments and some prescriptions.” The fundraiser included a variety of events throughout Sunday, Sept. 7, including a car wash, BBQ, sale of River Kings merchandise, the Blue & White intrasquad game and an after-party at Shoeless Joe’s. A percentage of all money raised went to support Ouimet. “It was great to see the support of the community”, said Frost. “And I personally washed over 20 cars that day in order to raise as much money as possible.” Shoeless Joe’s, who is a major sponsor of the River Kings, jumped at the opportunity to help Ouimet. “When Brock first told us of her story, we didn’t hesitate to get on board for such a great cause,” said Gokan Karakus, Shoeless Joe’s owner. as are new styles that people may see on celebrities or athletes. “I always tell clients to wear the hair you are comfortable wearing…confidence makes the hair work!"

It’s that time again - leading up to the elections ... THE FIVE QUESTIONS SECTION Five questions with 2014 cornwall ontario city council candidate rony MacaronE

information tech, communications & logistics. Cornwall is Ideally situated to take advantage of some very high tech business opportunities. 3 – what is your vision for arts and culture? would you support the building of an arts and culture centre in cornwall?

Interview by Jason Setnyk. Submitted Photo.

I am very involved in the arts and have been my whole life. We do need a coherent plan to develop the arts community. Perhaps an art show on the scale of Lift-off, similar to le Salon des métier d’art in Montreal that attracts artist & craftsmen along with their buyers. Cornwall, SD&G and surroundings hold a ton of talent! Let’s form a coop to unite & support all artists and hold events on a grand scale.

1 – tell the voters a bit about yourself. what skills and experience would make you a good candidate for council? Hello my name is Rony Macarone (pronounced Rōnnie Make’rōn). I am a small business entrepreneur who operates a few businesses in town. I am from a FrancoOntarian mother and my father was born in Montreal from Italian parents. Hence the funny last name. My post secondary education is in business, information technology, conservation and sustainability. I am honest, technically skilled and I am eager to find solutions to the most complex issues. I can bring a logical approach to governing our city. 2 – In what ways could we improve Economic development and how can we make cornwall a more friendly city for small businesses? I would start with making Cornwall the ‘place to be’ The old reputation our city had is done. We need to re-market. Attracting young families and working on keeping youth engaged. This will create young entrepreneurs that will want to develop their ‘startups’ locally. We need more post-secondary training in

Five questions with 2014 cornwall ontario city council candidate todd bEnnEtt Interview by Jason Setnyk. Submitted Photo. 1 – tell the voters a bit about yourself. what skills and experience would make you a good candidate for council? I will be married 25 years this October to my wife Sheri. I owned a successful small business for 8 years, and have been on the management team at Farm Boy for the last ten years, where I have had extensive experience making and following budgets. For the last 4 years I have been on 3 committees of council, and I chair one, am vice chair of another. This experience has helped me learn the way to get thing s done at city hall. 2 – In what ways could we improve Economic development and how can we make cornwall a more friendly city for small businesses? The first thing we need to do is remove all the unnecessary red tape new and existing business have to go through when trying to set up or expand. A focus on the east end that has mostly been forgotten in recent years, to help get Le Village up on it’s feet again. Helping to develop arts and culture in that end of the city would go a long way to start the revitalization of that area. 3 – what is your vision for arts and culture? would you support the building of an arts and culture centre in cornwall? 4 – do you support freezing or lowering taxes? If so, where would the savings come from, and would you support reducing some services? If you do not support freezing or lowering taxes explain why. I definitely support the freezing of taxes. I do see lowering taxes. What I have seen in a ‘quick’ look at the city’s budgets is the elimination of wasteful spending. I can’t get into details here but I can say I see waste in some departments, such as Roads, Garbage and EMS. 5 – what has been the biggest accomplishment at city hall over the past four years or what has been the biggest issue of concern at city hall over the past four years? What I have seen coming from economic development is amazing. The business parks, Distribution centres & Big Box retail are examples. I would like to see more growth in the middle class and skilled jobs.

our rich arts and culture sector to the forefront. My end goal in all this is to see the development of an Arts Center. Our committee is in the process now of getting a needs assessment done to determine what we need, where it will go, who will use it, and how much will this cost? My hope is to have a facility shovel ready by 2117. 4 – do you support freezing or lowering taxes? If so, where would the savings come from, and would you support reducing some services? If you do not support freezing or lowering taxes explain why. Any one who owns a home, or runs a business knows that costs go up every year. So to say we can roll back taxes would be foolish and almost impossible. Wages and the cost of utilities alone make it tough to even hold the line at zero. However, a tax freeze is possible if we do a good job bringing in new assessment. Be it new housing, or better yet, more business investment, that will be the only way to hold the line. I truly am aiming for a tax freeze. If that isn’t the goal from the start, then it can never happen. 5 – what has been the biggest accomplishment at city hall over the past four years or what has been the biggest issue of concern at city hall over the past four years? The biggest accomplishment has been the attraction of distribution centers that have offered steady employment and new assessment to our city. The biggest challenge has been transparency and accountability. There needs to be a giant shift in the mind-set of city hall in what it tells its citizens about how there money is being spent. Good or bad, everyone needs to be able to see where the money goes. If there needs to be some confidentiality, they can still give us dollar amounts without telling us the who or what. That will be something I will push for. There is no reason for secrecy when it comes to money being spent.

then could be used for other social programs, arts and culture, revitalization of certain areas, upgrading the waterfront, etc. 3 – what is your vision for arts and culture? would you support the building of an arts and culture centre in cornwall?

Interview and Photo by Jason Setnyk. 1 – tell the voters a bit about yourself. what skills and experience would make you a good candidate for council? Born and raised in Cornwall, Ontario, I graduated high school in 1995 from St. Joseph’s Secondary School. I went on to educate myself in the technological world. I moved to Calgary to gain further experience in my trade and in management. Two years later, I returned back to Cornwall and after many years working as a Certified Technician for Hewlett Packard/QMS/Minolta and Lexmark I planted my roots and opened a small local business and started raising a family. As a father, husband and proud citizen of Cornwall, I continue to be a driving force in my community. With over 20 years of volunteer and charitable work, I strive to constantly give back to my community. 2 – In what ways could we improve Economic development and how can we make cornwall a more friendly city for small businesses? There’s so many issues it’s hard to just choose one, but at the end of the day to me it all comes down to Economic Development.Through this creating and using incentive programs to entice and attract new business and people to our beautiful community. In turn, this would create more revenue for our city which

See #2. 4 – do you support freezing or lowering taxes? If so, where would the savings come from, and would you support reducing some services? I don’t have enough information to make an educated decision on this matter. This is something the new council will have to work hard on, in making the right decision for the community. Creating new revenue for the city though incentive programs, could generate the funding needed without freezing or cutting. 5 – what has been the biggest accomplishment at city hall over the past four years or what has been the biggest issue of concern at city hall over the past four years? We need a council that will work together, put their differences aside and make the right decisions for growth, short and long term. In order to move forward and create change, we sometimes have to close doors on things that used to work, so we can introduce new ways and new ideas. Change isn’t always easy but in some circumstances a necessity and in my opinion, for Cornwall, it’s long overdue. There is so much potential here for growth and together as community, we can make a difference. In the end it’s not about what I want, but what the community wants. Sometimes actions speak louder then words. Vote.

Interview by Jason Setnyk. Submitted Photo. 1 – tell the voters a bit about yourself. what skills and experience would make you a good candidate for council? I was first elected to Cornwall City Council in 1998 where I served two terms. I was then re-elected in 2006. In 2010, I was re-elected for a fourth term of Council and I presently sits on a number of Boards. I have been married to my wife Susan for 45 years. We have two children, Rodney and Tracey, and two granddaughters named Alex and Anna I think my experience serving our community with 17 years in municipal operation as Park Supervisor and the honour of serving the residents of Cornwall for 14 years as a City Councillor. I understand the needs and wants of the taxpayers in Cornwall. The taxpayers in Cornwall want more Transparency and Accountability on how their city tax dollars are spent.

for service we should do everything in our power to assist them in getting the information or help fill documents required in regards to permits and or other documents that need to be completed. 3 – what is your vision for arts and culture? would you support the building of an arts and culture centre in cornwall? I fully support Cornwall should have it own Art and Culture Centre understanding that there is no money at all levels of government therefore I believe that Aultsville Hall including all areas in the east building is where we should be looking to put the Art and Culture Centre. The agreement between the city and St Lawrence College for Aultsville Hall is to be renewed shortly now is the time to get a long term lease for that portion of the building as St Lawrence College have no more use for that section. This area would be a great location to house the new Art and Culture Centre. 4 – do you support freezing or lowering taxes? If so, where would the savings come from, and would you support reducing some services?

2 – In what ways could we improve Economic development and how can we make cornwall a more friendly city for small businesses?

The top issue a new council must tackle in the next four years is to find inefficiencies to address high taxes. The only way to stabilize or reduce taxes in the next four years is to address the operating costs for Fire, Police and Ambulance which accounts for over 50 % of the city operating budget. The Provincial government must address the arbitrator’s awarding settlements without considering the municipality ability to pay. This in itself would go a long way to help in reducing taxes without cutting services.

Economic Development should be more aggressive in the promotion the city in the Quebec Market where new companies are looking to move their businesses out of Quebec.

5 – what has been the biggest accomplishment at city hall over the past four years or what has been the biggest issue of concern at city hall over the past four years?

All departments must remember that we are in the customer service business. When taxpayers request answers in regards to municipal operations or request

Biggest Accomplishments would be the Benson Centre and the new companies we were able to attract. Over the last four years my biggest concern was the lack of Transparency and accountability.

brock Frost proposal for mixed-system of government in cornwall

Cornwall Ontario — City Council candidate Brock Frost writes: It may be time for Cornwall to look at introducing the ward system.

The ward system, similar to a representative democracy at the provincial and federal level, essentially dissects a city into different regions (wards) with representatives elected from each region. Many cities across Ontario have municipal ward systems including Ottawa, Toronto, Kingston, Vaughn, Windsor, Oshawa, London, Timmins, Hamilton, Newmarket, Orillia, Barrie, Burlington and Cambridge, just to name a few. Even cities more comparable to Cornwall including Belleville and Peterborough have ward systems.

Deciding which government structure is best for Cornwall is not an easy decision and it is important to first understand the pros and cons of a ward system in general. Here is a summary of my thoughts from both sides of the political argument:

ProS

Equitable distribution – A ward system ensures geographical

distribution of elected officials and guarantees every region of the City is represented at the Council table.

accountability – Councillors elected in a ward system will, by nature, be held more accountable to the voters of their own ward. In essence, each citizen will be represented by only ONE councillor, NOT 10 as per our current structure. This ensures that politicians are held to a higher standard of conduct and accountability among its’ voters.

communication – A ward system allows for a clearer path of communication among voters and their elected representatives. As mentioned above, each citizen will be represented by only one councillor thus eradicating any confusion about whom to contact for questions or concerns about the community.

Minority representation – A ward system allows for better representation of minority groups, who tend to reside in specific neighbourhoods throughout the City.

voter awareness – In a ward system, candidates would not have to

campaign outside their respective wards. This would help candidates concentrate their efforts in smaller areas thus allowing voters to be more likely to meet their potential representatives, help make better informed decisions and likely increase voter turnout as a result.

conS

creates division – A ward system may cause councillors to fight for their

own ward interests rather than the interests of the community as a whole.

regional Interests don’t Exist – Regions of a city may not have different

interests and thus a ward system is not required at the Council level. More specifically, citizens of a municipality may all share the same goals and visions for the community as a whole.

May Exclude quality councillors – A ward system may prevent highly qualified individuals from being elected simply because they live in the same ward as another highly qualified individual who is elected.

accountability – A ward system may prevent councillors from being accountable to citizens other than those residing in their respective wards. costs – There may be costs associated with transitioning to a ward system

including studies to determine geographical boundaries, studies on population and demographics, changes of election policy and logistics and potentially many others.

My thoughtS For cornwaLL

A ward system is by no means the best system for all municipalities but it does have merit and should definitely be explored in Cornwall. Municipalities such as neighbouring South Glengarry, South Stormont, North Stormont, South Dundas and North Dundas, in which demographics and interests of citizens are similar and population is low, a ward system would not make political sense at all. However, in a city like Cornwall, where demographics are diverse and culture is ever-changing, a ward system may prove to be a better form of political structure. Let me explain why.

Cornwall is not a simple city in terms of the opinions, beliefs, goals and interests of its’ citizens. It is a vast mix of low income families, working middle class, students, artists, seniors, wealthy investors, immigrants and retirees. To say that we all share the same interests would be outright naïve. Riverdale is not Le Village and Eamers Corners is not the Downtown Core. These are distinct neighbourhoods with distinct residents and distinct desires. In my opinion, they all deserve to be properly represented at City Hall.

A common complaint I often hear is that our current Council does not represent the interests of Cornwall as a whole. I believe this argument is true for the most part. No disrespect to our current Councillors, I have the utmost respect for each one of them, but it is my job as a candidate to not only distinguish myself from the pack but to also introduce ideas that will benefit Cornwall in the future. Cornwall is changing, and has the potential to change dramatically in the near future. Moving forward, a ward system may simply be the way to go. The sheer number of candidates and platform ideas this year proves that we have now outgrown our political system and are in desperate need for a significant change. The opposing side of a ward system is noted above and needs to be taken into consideration as well. For that reason, my proposal as councillor if elected, would be to introduce a mixed-system of government which would include 8 representatives elected from 8 different wards while keeping an additional 2 representatives to be elected at large. The Mayor as well would continue to be elected at large. It is through this mixed system of government that Cornwall can finally start to become the City which we also so desperately want it to be.

Five questions with 2014 cornwall ontario city council candidate andrE rIvEttE

www.theseeker.ca

A few weeks ago, Ken Shaver was shopping in my store. As usual, we got to talking about recipes we have recently tried. This man really likes to cook fancy meals and bake as well! he told me about inventing a new orange pie filling. That afternoon, he brought me in a plate with 2 wedges of his new orange pie, with fluy whipped topping and garnished with toasted coconut. It was hard for me to wait until suppertime to taste this, but I did! Gary and I enjoyed having this cool and refreshing dessert that night. only after we had eaten every crumb, did I realize that I had forgotten to take a picture of the pie. you will have to mentally picture this pie until you make it yourself. It is a nice change from a lemon pie. This is a perfect pie to serve on a hot summer evening. Thanks Ken for sharing and caring.

kEn'S nEw orangE PIE INGREDIENTS:

METHOD: -You will be using a double boiler. Have several inches of water boiling.

-Into the top pot of the double boiler, not placed over the boiling water yet, place the following ingredients:

-Stir together the white sugar and cornstarch, pinch of fine salt and the grated orange zest. -Whisk the egg yolks until light. Add the orange juice and the beaten egg yolks to the cornstarch and sugar mixture. Whisk to combine thoroughly.

-Place the pot over the boiling water. Cook the pie filling until nice and thick. Use a wooden spoon to stir. Stir constantly. -Once nice and thick, stir in the 4 tbsp. of butter.

-Cool the filling and then pour it into the prepared baked pie shell. Put the pie into your fridge. -Once completely cold, spread a generous layer of whipped topping (or whipped cream)

a varIatIon oF thIS PIE

-Use 5 alive juice blend and substitute this for the orange juice. Follow the same recipe as above.

remember - the HUMMING BIRDS

Don’t put away you hummingbird feeders. Keep them filled with freshly made syrup. Even if your own little hummingbirds have flown, there are travelling hummingbirds hungry and needing your syrup to sustain them on their long journey.

The recipe for the syrup is 2 cups of water mixed with 1/2 cup of white sugar. Just simmer this for a few minutes, long enough to dissolve the sugar. Cool to room temperature and fill your hummingbird feeder.

over the pie filling. Then sprinkle a garnish of toasted coconut all over the whipped topping. TO TOAST COCONUT: Just place a single layer of coconut in a pie plate or on a cookie sheet in a 350 degree F. oven for just a few minutes, until the coconut begins to brown. Stir the coconut to mix well and have even browning. That's it. It's that easy. Extras can be cooled, then stored in a jar for future use.

what brought on the decision to form Mothership? This project came about by a chance jam. I have played with and have known Rich Fullerton(our singer in Mothership) since my early 20's. We decided to get together one Friday night and just jam for the fun of it. We jammed thru several different songs from ZZ-Top, Pearl Jam to some Zeppelin. We happened to play The Ocean and Black Dog I believe, and when Rich started singing I got goose bumps because of how close he sounded to Robert Plant. Right then and there I said we have to put together a Zep Tribute band. I also knew that I didn't just want to be a cover band. I am a huge Genesis fan, and have seen the band Musical Box from Montreal every time they come to town. They also do a theatrical version of Genesis, with all the costumes and gear needed to put on this type of show. I knew I wanted to do something similar to this with Mothership. do you have any words for fans or aspiring guitarists? Words for fans: I hope you enjoy what we do as much as we enjoy doing it. For guitarists. First and foremost LISTEN ! I would have to say listen to as many styles of music as possible. Keep your mind open and play with as many people as possible. well I'd like to thank you again for spending time with me. I feel we've gotten to know you a bit better, and we look forward to the show on october the 4th at the Port theatre, on Montreal road in cornwall. marlene Baker of www.fashionography.ca

See you all tomorrow, Saturday, September 20th…bright and early for best selection…8am to 4pm…thanks…

Yes Zeppelin songs have always come in and out of set lists since my very first bands as a teenager.

Thanks in advance for understanding….

I have never seen Zeppelin Live, I was way too young. have you played Led Zeppelin songs in other bands, before Mothership?

LIFESTYLE

* I will be back the following Saturday, october 4th with my regular hours (8am to 4pm)….

how many times had you seen Led Zeppelin live in concert, and in what cities?

For this reason, I have decided to open the shop on Sunday, September 28th in order for you to come in and pick up your weekly, Health Nut favorites.... My hours will be 9am to 2pm that day only!! I hope that this will still give you the chance to come in and pick up your favorites!!

LIFESTYLE

Wanting to let all of you know ahead of time that, Saturday, September 27th, my shop will be closed (next week). I have been personally invited by Kathy Smart to attend her all day workshop “Ignite your metabolism” in Ottawa… this is an offer that I truly cannot refuse. I am at a point in my life where I truly need to learn and understand this part of life. I am so looking forward to it, it will be a life changing experience I am sure…

when did you discover Led Zeppelin, and how did they impact your playing? I discovered Led Zeppelin very young. I am the youngest of 4 boys, and my older brothers( musicians as well) were always playing Zeppelin, Purple, Genesis Santana in there room. Of coarse I wanted to hang out with my brothers.

Jaime and Matt of Cornerstone Organics will be at the shop this week-end…with all of their great organic produce, beef, pork, chicken, bone broth soups etc…..come and take advantage of this fresh local business as the season is quickly coming to an end. I love having them at my shop on a regular basis…they truly bring natural goodness to many of my customers, the quality of their product is truly amazing!!

Steve, how long have you been playing the guitar? Next question please !! hahaha. I have been playing for about 35 years which is as long as I can remember.

LIFESTYLE

For this reason, I have created homemade goods that celebrate all of the Fall Harvest. For a limited time you can come in and pick up amazing raw/dairy free pumpkin pie cheesecake as well as pumpkin pie ice cream (dairy/gluten-free). You can also choose a scrumptious apple crisp. Nothing like the smell of wholesome goodness as you open the shop door… being offered to you tomorrow….

This is Marlene Baker and I have the pleasure of interviewing guitarist Steve Milley of The Mothership, an amazing Led Zeppelin tribute band who will be performing here in Cornwall at the Port Theater in October. If you don't know the Mothership, you are missing out on 'Canada's Led Zeppelin', as they have been called. They are truly the closest thing to seeing Led Zeppelin in concert at the height of their career.

My favourite season is here!! I love Fall and all of the beautiful colours and cooler days that come along with it. The fact of opening the windows and having that refreshing cool breeze flowing through the house is awesome! Walking in surrounding nature trails covered in fallen leaves just soothes the soul. Nothing like coming home and enjoying a great tasting, comforting, delicious treat… mmmmmm….

If you have problem deciding what goes well together and what does not, consider hiring a professional organizer offering home decor services. 33. In the new home share the space; don't make the experience regretful by being a control freak.

34. Compromise and give everyone a place to decorate that they can call their own. 35. One person may have more property than the other, therefore allow the person with fewer items to contribute by giving him/her the freedom to select decorative items or to decorate their own personal space. note: When decorating the home, men sometimes let the woman decide the set up. however, the women should ask the man's opinion and preferences.

36. Create a space where you each feel comfortable; this can be challenging when one is moving into the other's home. 37. If your home is more feminine, convert a guest room into a den where the man can relax and do guy things. 38. If the home is more masculine, the woman should be allowed to bring in art, flowers or decorate rooms suiting her tastes. 39. Since your lifestyle is about to change, keep and open mind to make your new life easier. 40. Do not be afraid to combine different styles to showcase a great, eclectic collection. Every room can showcase a different theme. 41. Once you have moved in, divide house chores by finding a system that works for both of you. If you can afford it, splurge on a house cleaner. note1: Depending on your work schedule, for some households it makes sense to alternate by taking a turn every other week. note 2: For others, splitting up chores works better, e.g. one person vacuums and dusts, the other mops and scrubs; it will keep peace in the family. In two weeks, I will be addressing the subject of "Blending families" which often occurs as a consequence of merging two households.

FINANCIALLY SPEAKING

with Brian Seguin Enhance the value of your Estate with Life Insurance Most of us think of life insurance as a way to protect our family financially when we die. But insurance coverage can go beyond that basic need, to increase the value of an estate. Of course, an insurance policy's primary purpose should be to ensure that your loved ones won't find themselves in difficulty. But consider using life insurance to leave more to your heirs, other beneficiaries or even charity. You can do this through a permanent life insurance policy, such as universal life or participating whole life, which provides both insurance and an investment component. The insurance portion will take care of basic insurance requirements, while the investment portion can be used to boost the value of your estate. For example, when you take out a universal life policy, a portion of the premiums you pay go toward insurance, with the rest going into the policy's investment component (sometimes known as the cash or savings portion). The money in the investment component is sheltered from tax, resulting in faster growth than if money is invested outside the policy.

When you die, your heirs receive the face value of the policy's life insurance, as well as the value of the investment portion of the policy. Both are tax-free to beneficiaries, so they receive the entire amount of the policy and its investments. With universal life, you have some control over the investment portion because you can choose from a number of investment options offered by insurers. Typical choices include investments whose returns are linked to the performance of brand name mutual funds, guaranteed interest accounts or stock market indexes. The wealth that accumulates in the investment component will depend on the deposit paid and performance of underlying investments. How much you pay in premiums and how often is generally up to you. In most cases you can pay whatever you wish. However, there are government-imposed maximums based on factors such as your age, gender, expected lifespan and the face value of the policy. This flexibility is what makes universal life such a valuable estate-planning tool. You can start small, with the goal of providing financial protection for your family in the event of your death. As you grow older and find yourself with more disposable income or cash flow, you can focus on the investment component of the policy. You're a good candidate for universal life if you have money left over to invest after your basic financial, investment and insurance needs are met-including maximizing yearly Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contributions and paying down loans. This type of policy is suitable for not only for those seeking insurance flexibility and a way to enhance estate values, but those who need additional tax-sheltered growth after making RRSP contributions. Speak to your financial advisor about how you can use life insurance as a tax-effective way to enhance the value of your estate. Edward Jones, its employees and Edward Jones advisors do not offer tax or legal advice. Insurance is offered by Edward Jones Insurance Agency (except in Quebec). In Quebec, insurance is offered by Edward Jones Insurance Agency (Quebec) Inc. member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

One of our goals has been to offer treatment prices that the majority of people could afford, even if they did not have extended health coverage. For those with limited insurance coverage this also enables them to afford more treatment sessions. Seniors 65 and over and children 19 and under have a special price. Some of our clients come for one or two sessions to get advice on what they can do for themselves at home. Shockwave has recently been added at the affordable price of $60 per session. Cornwall Regional Physiotherapy also provides treatment to those who have been injured in motor vehicle accidents, where insurances are billed directly online. Those who have been injured in the workplace and going through WSIB can also receive treatment here. With WSIB we provide the Acute Low Back Program of Care, the Shoulder Program of Care and the Musculoskeletal Program of Care, along with fee for service when injuries do not fit within these programs. All treatment fees are directly billed to WSIB for these services. Regardless of the treatment stream you are in, your recovery is our goal. The Team and Artist’s, 37 strong, would like to invite the public to join them on September 27, 28 to see the incredible work of local artists in SDG. 23 Years ago no one on the committee thought it would last and grow as it has. SDG has great talent. We have a mature artistic base to expand from. Many artists on the tour this year have been successfully showing and selling their work for many years. They have evolved using mixed and multi facade media to bring life to canvas, shape and material. Apples & Art is a celebration of special time of year and opportunity for artist and the public interested in seeing where, how and find out why they love what they do.

CoUrSE In BATIK This is another opportunity to begin the study of Batik, an art form that is a cross between watercolour, ink painting and dying cloth. It requires the knowledge of colour, patience, a spirit of adventure and a willingness to get your fingers dirty. The results are amazing and as varied as each artist who attempts it. Elaine Arkwright has organized a group for October 21-22-23. Get in touch with her if you are interested. (613-938-8315). Don’t miss this chance. It may be the last time the beginners course is given .

Registration is currently ongoing at the Cornwall Armoury (505 Fourth Street East) on Wednesday nights from 6:30-9:30pm. The Cornwall Air Cadets are one of the busiest youth groups around with activities ranging from aviation training, flying, gliding, sports, winter camping, canoeing, biathlon, range, summer camps and tons more. All this provided at no charge to youth! Within the cadet program, 325 is known for their top notch training program and dedication to fostering youth excellence amongst Canada's finest. With 71 years of history in Cornwall and community support, cadets in the squadron will have the opportunity to experience events and activities that most cannot say they ever have. Over the years, the squadron has seen multiple cadets achieve their pilot's license, including two this past summer. (FSgt Sam Nadler and WO2 David Gellately) In total, 70 cadets were sent to summer camps across Canada, earning valuable experiences and qualifications in music, First Aid, leadership, survival, aviation and athletics. To top it off, cadets even earned money while attending camp, on top of earning high school credits for their participation in training. Youth who participate in the air cadet program have the ability to advance through level training progression and obtain leadership positions through promotions in rank. Cadets are able to take the skills and knowledge they learn and transfer them to the real world, being able to add to their resumes.

Last year, the squadron saw many achievements including top place in the Exertion Competition, a cadet qualified for the Provincial Biathlon competition, and a fourth place finish in the Provincial Competition for our Marching Band. The squadron has proudly been sponsored by the Cornwall Kiwanis Club and Royal Canadian Air Force Association Wing 424, providing opportunity to Cornwall's youth.
