To contribute Over and Above their normal contributions is extremely thoughtful”. “It’s all about doing what we can to help our region grow and meet the needs of our citizens throughout SDG. With this pledge we would like to challenge all other business owners to “step up” and help if they can”, continues Andre. “Giving a little bit more this year will help people to get what they need, or find assistance at one of the agency programs”, says Bev Lapointe, Owner of the Seaway Hyundai dealership. Not To Be Missed! THIS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15 ..... St. Lawrence College, Cornwall Campus ROLLS OUT THE RED CARPET. Prospective students can come and learn about all that St. Lawrence College has to offer during our Open House events in Cornwall this Saturday, November 15, 9am - noon, Cornwall Campus - Registration is not required for this public event. Open House is a perfect opportunity to tour our stateof-the-art learning facilities, modern residences, learn about our extensive campus life features, athletic opportunities, and so much more. Staff and students will be on hand to answer questions about our 85 plus full-time programs, including numerous online learning opportunities.
St. Lawrence College is well-known for taking learning out of the classroom. In Cornwall, our students interact and participate not only in the community, but with future partners upon graduation. This fall our second year Paramedic students engaged in Fire Extrication with the Cornwall Fire Dept. This experience provides them with firsthand knowledge of rescue simulations and real life emergency situations that they may encounter in their careers, in addition to the collaborative efforts of first response teams.
“Experiential learning opportunities such as these help our students become career-ready through teamwork while engaging with their community in a collective effort,” said Glenn Vollebregt, President and CEO of St. Lawrence College.
Investing in education always pays off. According to a recent economic impact study conducted by Economic Modeling Specialist International (EMSI), for every dollar a student spends on their education at St. Lawrence College, they’ll earn $4.40 in higher net earnings over the course of their working careers. For example, the average two-year diploma graduate from St. Lawrence will see an increase in net earnings of $13,500 each year compared to someone with a high school diploma or equivalent.
That’s a pretty great return on investment, according to Vollebregt. “At St. Lawrence College, we put our students first, providing them with the best possible education for their chosen career path.”

St. Lawrence College is one of the province’s leading institutions with a graduate employment rate of 88.2 per cent. “These results are another indication that St. Lawrence students find success during their studies and after graduation,” Vollebregt said.

THOMPSON A TRIBUTE TO
Montreal’s Real
DORIS MCNAMARA
Mrs Claus has
Cornwall lost one of her most dedicated animal lovers on October 23/14. For years, Doris worked raising money at rummage sales, bake sales, horse shows and bingos to raise money to help build our local animal shelter on Boundary Road. With friends from the local Humane Society: Joan and Bill, Catherine and Jim, Pat, Valerie, Jean, Julie and Shawn, John and Ray, Bob, Gary and I. I don't know how many pies and squares, cookies and croissants and and fresh fruit salads we prepared and sold at all of these affairs. Doris must have made a zillion beautiful lemon meringue pies. That was her specialty! and they sold out immediately!
moved to Cornwall If you have a charitable event or a Christmas party for children, I will gladly attend voluntarily, bringing extra joy to the children and adults alike.
In 1998, Doris was named Senior Citizen of the year: for her efforts to help our less fortunate animals. She kept a personal fund with money she raised to spay and neuter dogs and cats when their owners could not afford the cost of the procedure. No one ever was told of these acts of kindness. Doris wasn't out for the glory. She was just there for the animals in need.
Doris was a wonderful cook, often making a wonderful turkey supper which Gary and I were invited to enjoy along with her son Howard. Then we would have a delicious slice of her famous Lemon Meringue Pie. Doris also made the best Peanut Butter Balls. When Gary and I had our bad car accident in 1989, Doris gave us a tinful of these delectable treats. Since that occasion, I was given her recipe for them and have made them ever since. They are one of our Christmas treats we make every year. Her quiet acts of loving kindness will not be forgotten by many who knew her. We will miss you Doris. you will always be in our thoughts and prayers. Our deepest sympathies to you children Bonnie and Howard and your four legged friends.
If you are a business there is a fee. This very glamourous Mrs. Claus has been considered the Real Thing!
To book her for your event, please call 613-935-4592
DORIS' CHOCOLATE COATED PEANUT BUTTER BALLS This recipe makes 33 balls.
NOTE: I DOUBLE ALL THE FOLLOWING INGREDIENTS BECAUSE THIS RECIPE IS SO GOOD, YOU NEED TO MAKE EXTRAS OR THEY WILL BE GONE IN A FLASH!
1 egg, beaten 3/4 cup smooth peanut butter 1 cup of chopped walnuts 1 cup of sweetened Angel flake coconut 1 cup of icing sugar 3/4 cup of chopped glace cherries (I use a mixture of red and green for Christmastime) 6 squares of Baker's semi-sweet chocolate along with 1/3 bar of Paroffin Wax OR use Merckens chocolate wafers in semi-sweet or milk chocolate - about 2 to 2- 1/2 cups. This is what I use.
WHY DO FUNERALS COST SO MUCH? Bonnie answers ... Families have many choices today. We make options available in various price ranges to meet all needs. We are locally owned, use area craftsmen where possible and believe in assisting our families in all areas of service. As our motto states, we are “Dedicated to Service, Committed to Excellence”
METHOD:
-In a large bowl, combine the beaten egg, peanut butter, chopped walnuts, coconut, icing sugar and the chopped glace cherries. Mix well.
-Roll this into balls about 1" in size. Refrigerate until chilled completely. I usually refrigerate them overnight and dip them in the morning.
-Melt the chocolate squares and the paraffin wax together in a bowl over a pot of simmering, not boiling water. Or if you are using the Merckens chocolate wafers, Just melt them the same way. Don't have the water boiling and don't get any steam in the chocolate or it will seize and harden.TIP: I use an electric fry pan with one inch of water in it. Set the heat to 200 degrees F. Place the Merckens chocolate wafers in a bowl and set this in the water. The chocolate will melt to perfection with no problems. -Now dip the balls in the melted chocolate. Use 2 forks or a slotted spoon to dip the peanut butter balls in the chocolate.
-Place the dipped balls on a parchment or waxed paper lined baking sheet. If the balls are cold, the chocolate will harden quickly on them. If not, place the tray in the fridge for a few minutes to set the chocolate. ENJOY!!!

If you would like to feel this way too, here are twelve habits of perfectly organized people I have observed.
Part 1 of 2
1. They know who they want to be.
In case you might believe I am describing myself, this is not me at all. I run four businesses and own several thousands catalogued items for my collector's museum, multicultural and international art centre which I plan to start building in a year. I am highly organized that is all and I say "Yes" more than I should; it goes with the territory when you are a philanthropist.
These people have an exact definition of how they want their life to be, their home to look like, the way they dress and how they spend their time, which makes it a lot easier to set goals and feel a sense of accomplishment.
It is true what they say: "Clutter breeds clutter." There are so many of us who dream of running a less chaotic household or struggle to remember what our office or work desk looks like. We crave order, yet at the same time resist due to the negative connotations attached to being perfectly organized or a perfectionist.
Also, there are misconceptions that being “organized” means being a control freak or a neat freak. That you are not truly enjoying your life because you are focusing on mundane details you “should not” consider important. For someone who has gone from chaotic and spontaneous to organized and efficient, there many benefits to the latter that this topic could be turned into a self-help book. There are three top benefits to being perfectly organized: •
•
Not being in a permanent state of “catch-up” decreases your stress level by 100 percent and increases your self-esteem by the same amount.
2. They know how to say, “No.” Because they know exactly what they want, it’s easier for them to say, “No” when they are offered a work project or invited to a social gathering that does not advance their lifestyle in some way. They are able to decline with confidence and are not easily swayed by societal pressure. 3. They shop smartly. Just because something is on sale does not mean you have to buy it. Perfectly organized people always ask themselves, “Do I really need this?” before every purchase. Not only does this help keep your budget intact, it pushes you away from using instant gratification as a tool to cope with rough patches. Also items on sale always come back on sale a few weeks later.

SEGUIN A Checklist for Snowbirds About to Head South
It’s almost time for “snowbirds” to head south. If you’re about to escape Canada for the winter, be certain your financial life is in order before you go. Take inventory of bills that must be paid while you’re gone. Make sure you can pay them while outside the country, or arrange for someone to take care of them for you. Internet banking is a great way to keep track of expenses and bill payments. Ensure access to cash and financial accounts – If you’re wintering in the U.S. or another country with easy access to international networks through ATMs, a bank card may be all you need to get cash. If you’ll have Internet access, make sure you’re registered for online financial services to make investment or banking transactions while you’re away. Cover your legal bases – Have a current will in place and let someone know where your legal documents are kept. Make sure your powers of attorney are up to date in case something happens to prevent you from managing your affairs.
Buy health insurance – When you’re out of the country, medical insurance is a must. Without proper coverage, your financial life could be thrown into turmoil if you become ill or are the victim of an accident. With your financial affairs in order, you can have a relaxing winter – free of snow and worries. Edward Jones, its employees and Edward Jones advisors do not offer tax or legal advice. Insurance is offered by Edward Jones Insurance agency (except in Quebec). In Quebec, insurance is offered by Edward Jones Insurance agency (Quebec) Inc. St. Columban’s School looking to improve school yard Cornwall, ON - The school yard at St. Columban’s school is in need of a pick-me-up. The school’s Eco Team has been hard at work trying to make that happen. After doing school wide surveys, they discovered that the students have one thing on their mind; grass. The Eco team is now trying to fulfill that request. They have submitted an entry into Aviva Insurance’s Aviva Community Fund contest in an attempt to win the money needed to make changes to the school yard. What they need next is for people to support them by voting for them daily. The Aviva Community Fund contest is composed of three voting rounds. The top twenty vote getters from each round move forward to the semi final round. Two rounds have now been completed, and after round two, St. Columban’s was ranked number 35 in number of votes. They have their hopes set on the third and final voting round to make it to the semifinals. They see this as a very realistic goal, and if voting from last round were to stay the same they would easily make it through to the semi finals. The 60 teams in the semi finals will be counting on votes again, with the top 20 vote getters making it through to the final round, which is judged. All teams in the finals are guaranteed a minimum of $5,000. Voting for round 3 begins November 10. Voters are allowed to vote once a day every day for the 14 day round. To vote for St. Columban’s, go to avivacommunityfund.org and search for Idea #19864. A Facebook page has also been started for more information: www.facebook.com/stcolumbansavivafund. HAVE YOU HEARD? THERE’HAS BEEN A MURDER!
2014-2015 Principal Sponsors
To find out what it’s all about...
Who’s been murdered? How it happened? WHO DID IT?
A New Art Form Is Born In Our Area
MEMBERS, come to the next meeting on December 3rd at le Centre Charles-Émile Claude, 146 Chevrier, at 7pm.
Brought together by a common interest, a dozen artists have explored the world of Batik under the expert teaching of Jennifer Raby of Perth Ontario (Rideau Lake Artists’ Association, The Batik Artists’ Association of Canada (BAAC) www.batikartists.ca).
As you solve the puzzle, enjoy a Christmas potluck supper when, for a change this year, your talents of discovery, “Who done it”, will be challenged. Invitations are in the mail.
Early in 2013, Elaine Arkwright (Focus Art Association) organized a three-day workshop. Elaine had been a student of Jennifer’s for years and invited her to come and teach a group in Cornwall. A few curious souls ventured into the experience not really knowing what to expect. Since that early three-day workshop, there have been three beginners’ classes, an advanced class and this month, a master workshop always with Jennifer Raby. By popular demand, a beginners’ class will be offered in April 2015.
Bring a friend.
The group always shares its progress with the members of Focus Art and hopes to be able to hold a show of their own in the spring. Louise Mignault, seen working on her latest Batik, has taken all of the workshops given by Jennifer Raby. From Montreal, Louise has enjoyed a career in films and theatre and has skillfully transferred her artistic eye and steady hand to her new found passion. Louise finds the art form challenging, creative and very rewarding. Her new skills earned her an honorable mention at the Focus Art Juried Show in October 2014.
FOCUS ART 10th ANNIVERSARY CALENDARS are now on sale for $10.00.
You can purchase them from members of Focus Art, Studio Phase II, Centre Charles-Émile Claude, or by calling Rose at 613-931-1194, Elaine at 613-938-8315 or Louise at 514-484-6660. Rose Desnoyers President of Association FOCUS ART Association www.focusartonline.org rosedesn@cogeco.ca

What is Batik?
Batik is both an art and a craft, which is becoming more popular and well known in the West as a wonderfully creative medium. The art of decorating cloth in this way, using wax and dye, has been practiced for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there. The word batik originates from the Javanese tik and means to dot. To make batik, brushing or drawing hot wax over them blocks selected areas of the cloth out, and the cloth is then dyed. The parts covered in wax resist the dye and remain the original color. This process of waxing and dyeing can be repeated to create more elaborate and colorful designs. After the final dyeing the wax is removed and the cloth is ready for wearing or showing. Contemporary batik, while owing much to the past, is markedly different from the more traditional and formal styles. For example, the artist may use etching, discharge dyeing, stencils, different tools for waxing and dyeing, wax recipes with different resist values and work with silk, cotton, wool, leather, paper or even wood and ceramics. Batik is historically the most expressive and subtle of the resist methods. The ever-widening range of techniques available offers the artist the opportunity to explore a unique process in a flexible and exciting way. Reference: www.batikguild.org.uk/whatisbatik.asp

EASTERN ONTARIO TRAINING BOARD Local Labour Market Plan 2014 – 2017 / TOP Report The Eastern Ontario Training Board publishes an annual Local Labour Market Plan for the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SD&G) and Prescott-Russell United Counties (P-R). The plan draws on multiple sources to identify strategies the local board and their partners will take to develop the local area’s labour force and to support economic growth in the coming years.
2. An aging workforce The impact of the aging workforce was particularly evident in managerial occupations where one in three managers in SD&G and one in four in P-R are over age 55. Succession planning strategies are highlighted as well as communicating future opportunities to students.
Our analysis of statistical data for the region combined with information shared by employers, educators and service providers identified three drivers of labour market imbalance:
3. Skills Mismatch or “People without Jobs – Jobs without People” The labour market data highlights incidences of labour market shortages in some occupations at the same time as surplus workers are evident in a related occupation. In some cases, short-term skills development or ‘upskilling’ may transition available workers to meet labour market demands.
1. Low levels of labour participation in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry and Prescott-Russell At the same time as there are workforce shortages in the area, labour force participation rates as low as 52 per cent in SD&G and eastern P-R means that skilled, knowledgeable and experienced workers have voluntarily removed themselves from the labour force. In western Prescott-Russell labour force participation reaches as high as 77 per cent, however, more than 50 per cent of the workforce works
The Eastern Ontario Training Board and their partners have developed a three year action plan to address labour market imbalance in SD&G and P-R through a focus on: 1. Attracting available workers back to the labour force 2. Alleviating Skills Mismatch 3. Building the current and future workforce
outside of the region. By comparison, in Ontario, two of every three people between the ages of 15 and 64 work.

Not To Be Missed!
JAMMING FOR HOSPICE ROCKS This Sunday, November 16th ...
Patti Edwards was inspired by her friend Paul Herrington August 2012 when he informed her he was ill and missed jamming with his buddies. Patti visited with a friend Reg Menard at Hospice in his final days of life and thought what a wonderful, peaceful environment for someone to live out their final days. Finding our Cornwall Hospice relies a lot on donations, she put the idea together with help from Paul and many other musicians.
The first year we honoured Reg Menard and $500 was donated with the help from 20 musicians and as many patrons. Paul Herrington died Christmas day that same year, having been able to Jam with other musicians which put a smile on his face and in his heart.
November 2013, we honoured Paul Herrington with over 20 musicians including the friends Paul missed Jamming with; Ed Lauzon, Trevor Walsh and Paul Deslaurier. Over $2,500 was raised for Cornwall Hospice along with almost $1,500 for Dean Laponsee. It was a magical and inspiring day. The 3rd Annual Jamming for Hospice will be held this Sunday November 16 at the Agora Center (the old Nativity Hall – 301 McConnell Ave) from 2 to 10pm with about 30 musicians.
Starting at 2 till 4pm with the Acoustic performances with individuals and duets including Robert Cote Peter Fortin Carey B Grant Randy Toupin Chuck Leclair Jason Graveley Patti Edwards Alison Hudson At 4pm the bands will kick off with Drop of the Hat, Rock Bottom, Front Row, Alison Wonderland and the Trevor Walsh Group with Gary Lalonde (bass player from Honeymoon Suite) and a guest appearance by Roy Nichol. To make the evening personal each band/performers has been asked to dedicate at least 1 song to someone alive or passed on.
