EYE ON SOCIETY by Jason Setnyk
Arts, Culture, Politics October is the Child Abuse Prevention Campaign! Many amazing events are planned throughout the month starting with what will be an unforgettable LAUNCH in the Lamoureux park on Saturday, September 29th from 11:30 to 4:00 pm. There will be a FREE lunch by Benson's, kids activities of all kinds - inflatables, face painting, etc. Graham Greer, Rodney Rivette and Switchgear will keep us entertained, plus Zumba party, Rhythm Room, Spirit Tree Yoga and much more! Best of all we are trying to set a community record by having as many people come down to the park to make a "bang" by busting paper bags that will literally "break the silence" on child abuse! This event starts at 2:00 pm, but you must register early before noon. For more info on this and the great prizes to be won, visit the Facebook event page: www.facebook.com/events/484024871608175/permalink/485017291508933/ Apples & Art Studio Tour 2012! The 2012 Apples & Art Studio Tour runs September 29th and 30th, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm each day. For one weekend each fall, residents of Cornwall and the surrounding area are offered a chance to meet and talk to their local artists, see them at work, visit their homes and studios, and learn about their various disciplines. This great activity is combined with a chance for a spectacular autumn drive, visits to local landmarks, and an opportunity to enjoy delicious apple fares. Tour brochures and maps are available at the Cornwall Regional Art Gallery (168 Pitt Street) and at various locations in SD&G.
Walk a Mile in her Shoes 2012! Walk a Mile in her Shoes is presented by the Sexual Assault Support Services for Women of SDG&A on Saturday, September 22, 2012. The event runs from 10:30 am until 12:00 pm at Lamoureux Park. Sexualized violence does not just affect women. It affects the men who care about them, their families, their friends, their coworkers, and their communities. Sexualized violence is an epidemic. Some of the statistics: In Canada, police reported more than 22,000 sexual assaults in 2010. This represented an increase of 5% in the rate since 2009, the first increase in sexual assault since 2005.That means someone you know - someone you care about has been or may become the victim of sexual violence. It may be your mother, your sister, your friend, your girlfriend, your wife, your coworkers, or your daughter. With this being said, we are asking men in the community to walk one mile in red high heels to show their support on ending sexual violence towards women! Come one, come all and help us bring awareness to our community! Sexual violence is not just a women’s issue, it affects us all! A BBQ will be provided for FREE for each participant in the walk! Agape Chili Run 2012! The Agapè Centre’s Second Annual 5K Chili Run will be held outside, on the banks of the scenic St. Lawrence River, in Cornwall on Saturday, September 22nd, 2012. The 5K Run/Walk starts at 10:00 am. The Chili Cook-off starts at 11:30 am. Registration fee for the 5K Run/Walk is $40.00. Not only can participants invite friends to join us for a good scamper around the park, they can also enter a pot of their famous chili into the cook-off contest. 100% of the proceeds from this fundraising event will be donated to the Agapè Center’s food bank, where 40% of the recipients are children. For more info and to register, visit this website: agapecentre.ca/events/chilirun/ Arts and Culture Summit set for September 22, 2012! An upcoming gathering of over 100 arts and culture practitioners is expected to be a giant step forward towards the creation of a permanent Arts Council for Cornwall, SD&G and Akwesasne. The Arts & Culture Summit will take place at Aultsville Theatre on Saturday, September 22. The summit’s main focus will be exploring what is needed to form a regional Arts Council. The day-long event will see presentations on best practices from other communities, with an impressive line-up of guest speakers. Local Cornwall wrestler Randy Berry is trying out for the WWE! Local Cornwall wrestler Randy Berry is trying out for the WWE and will be at the upcoming Raw show in Montreal at the Bell Centre, and also at the Smackdown show in Ottawa. Letter to the Local Seeker by Brian Lynch, President of the SDSG Provincial NDP Riding Association: I am pleased that Catherine Fife, the outstanding NDP candidate, has won the by-election in Kitchener-Waterloo. The convincing win by the NDP in KitchenerWaterloo is a clear repudiation of the McGuinty Government’s record of cynical politicking, demonizing the province’s teachers and doctors and its inept management of E-Health, Ornge air ambulance and the costly cancellation of power plants in Mississauga and Oakville to win seats in the last provincial election. The voters of Kitchener-Waterloo agreed with Andrea Horwath and the Ontario NDP that Dalton McGuinty does not deserve a majority government. The voters of Kitchener-Waterloo also saw Tim Hudak and the Ontario Conservatives with their unconstitutional wage freeze scheme for Ontario’s public servants as a throw-back to the Mike Harris reign of error and terror. The NDP wants to get to work at Queen’s Park and get results for families who are worried about jobs, healthcare, and the cost of everyday life. It’s time to stop the political games and focus on the challenges facing everyday Ontarians.

SPINAL COLUMN with Dr. Paul Poirier
Energy Drinks... friend or foe???? As most people are aware, the popularity for energy drinks has ballooned in the last few years. Not to be confused with sport drinks that have RE-hydration of the body as their purpose, energy drinks make up an industry worth more than 5 billion dollars in North America alone. Many different makers of these products tout these beverages as being linked to boosting ones energy and increasing mental focus and alertness without mentioning their drawbacks. There are however some of the ingredients within these products that should be of concern to the public. Almost all of these drinks contain caffeine, up to 500 milligrams, which as we all know is a stimulant to the nervous system. Now compare that amount of caffeine to a typical cup of coffee which has an average of 50 to 150 milligrams or 12 ounce cola which has 35 milligrams. The regulatory bodies with regard to such drinks and their caffeine content are limited. In fact, many are marketed as dietary supplements. This loophole limits health regulators in their ability to confine the caffeine within the drinks. Other detriments to caffeine consumption include irritability, increased nervousness and insomnia as well as an increase in ones heart rate beating north of 100 beats per minute. In rare cases, copious amounts of caffeine ingestion have been linked to death. In fact, Caffeine intoxication even has its own syndrome recognized by the World Health Organization. The latest trend that's becoming a serious problem in our society is the combination of these energy drinks with alcohol. This scenario of having a false sense of sobriety can lead to risky behavior such as presuming to be able to drive when in fact ones faculties have been compromised.

What about the sugar? The industry now does have sugar free versions versions available to the masses but are nowhere near as popular and the regular drinks that range from 21 to 34 grams for an 8 ounce can which is 2 to 3 times the recommended intake. The American Pharmacist Association recently published a review on this new threat to our health and established a link between diabetes and other serious health consequences with the consumption of these glucose based products. What else is in these products? Ginseng, an herb that's been widely used for thousands of years for various conditions is often found in these beverages. The trick to having success with health conditions is the dosage of ginseng and much research has revealed that the levels are too low in these concoctions to have any therapeutic effect. Bottom Line: At the end of the day, as a health professional I cannot overstate the reasons why we should abstain from such products. If one needs to get an energy boost make sure your well hydrated as we rarely consume the adequate amount of fluids which contributes to fatigue. Pure water is the best choice for us. In fact, a good way to determine how much water one should ingest is based on ones eight. A 55 pound 7 year old does not have the same hydration requirements that a 190 pound high school football player would require. The basic formula of how much water one needs is to visualize what your weight is and then divide that number by 2 and then that's the amount of ounces one should drink per day. For example, if your weighed 150 lbs...you should drink 75 ounces of water per day. Dr Paul Poirier

The downtown area was alive with shops and tributes to the cultural offerings the local Artist had available. The smaller towns used out flavor the Regional approach to create a rounded town with each es combining Visual and Performance art venu their own theatre, music and art galleries to visit.

News from the CORNWALL OPTIMIST MINOR SOFTBALL LEAGUE consists of:180 players (girls and boys) mixed league, from 4 – 18 years old inclusive, 4 divisions: Minis, Majors, Peewees, Bantams
Bantams: Pirates - recipients of the Gold Medal and League Trophy for Bantam Division
Majors: Blue Jays - recipients of the Gold Medal and League Trophy for Major Division
Peewees: Blue Jays - recipients of the Gold Medal and League Trophy for Peewee Division
Minis: Red Sox - recipients of the Gold Medal and League Trophy for Mini Division
All teams receive a medal including one of participation as well as an MVP, MIP and Sportsmanship Trophy awarded to each team in all four divisions. We offer a 22-game season commencing in May plus 2 games on playoffs day held at the end of July. We are a teaching league so we accept beginners to advanced players and we teach them the basics of the game. The key to our league’s success is that our dedicated coaches and umpires encourage our players to have fun while improving their softball skills throughout the season. Monique Sauvé Roy, the league's Co-President, emphasizes that "the exceptional coaches we have are the link that binds the entire league together". Monique Sauvé Roy, Co-President of the Cornwall Optimist Minor Softball League, strongly encourages everyone involved with the league to follow the philosophy she presented to all coaches, assistant coaches and umpires. The philosophy reads as follows: "Every child deserves an opportunity to play and to learn the game in a safe environment" as quoted by Monique. We are proud to have the Optimist Club of Cornwall who is our major sponsor (we proudly wear their jerseys) at the Peewee and Bantam levels. They also provide free lunches to the kids at both the Tri-Star Sports Challenge event and on Playoffs Day. They truly are there for the kids and we are so fortunate to have them as our major sponsor. Tim Horton provides a T-shirt and cap to each player in the Minis and Majors divisions at no cost to the league. They also provide treats for the kids during special events such as Tri-Star Challenge Day and Playoffs Day. Registration for next season begins in March 2013.

Consider These Financial Gifts for Your Grandchildren If you’re a grandparent yourself, you already know the pleasures of having grandchildren in your life. And like so many grandparents, you may be looking at ways to help your grandchildren get the most out of their lives. Perhaps the most valuable thing you could give to your grandkids is the gift of education. Consider this: Over a lifetime, post secondary graduates earn, on average, about $1 million more than those without a degree according to the Census Bureau. So, putting money toward your grandchildren’s post secondary education is a good investment. Furthermore, your grandchildren may well need the help, because getting an education is expensive and costs continue to rise. Consequently, you may want to contribute to an RESP. You have several options for how the money can be invested and contribution limits were increased when the new federal budget was introduced. All withdrawals are free from federal income taxes, provided the money is used for qualified education expenses. If you name one grandchild as a beneficiary of an RESP and that grandchild decides not to go to college or university, you can switch the account to another grandchild — in other words, you maintain control of the money for the life of the account. Another common way to invest money for a grandchild's education is through the use of an "in trust" account. An "in-trust' account is an informal trust because there is no trust deed. However, it's important to note that once gifted, this money no longer belongs to the donor. If you put money into either a formal trust or an in-trust account for a minor grandchild, all income will be taxed in your hands until the child reaches age 18. Any capital gains will be taxed to the child regardless of their age. This is why investments that generate capital gains are ideally suited to this type of arrangement. For this type of arrangement to work properly, care must be taken to ensure that the in-trust account is set up properly and complies with the applicable tax rules. Whichever option is right for your family, there are a variety of opportunities for you to give something to the grandchildren who give so much to you.
