editorial changing the vanguard “We need to appeal to a new generation”. That was the conclusion of a conversation I had recently with Nigel McCollum, the new Director General of Canning House, an NGO which encourages dialogue between the UK and the Hispanic and the Luso-Brasilian world. There’s a reason for this shared objective: it won’t be long before a new dimension to London’s population appears – that of the sons and daughters of Latin immigrants. How will we reach them and show them how to be proud of their origins whilst, at the same time, they seek integration? In a way, the answer can be found in this issue’s cover story. Over almost seven years of JungleDrums, London's never had such a plenitude of Latin events, in terms of quantity and quality, which certainly goes to show the creativity coming out of Lula, Fidel and Chavez’s continent. Furthermore, this issue is the result of a love affair between Jungle and the other countries of the Americas, one which has been ongoing since edition #1. This year we’ve taken that relationship further with our Latin restaurant guide, and we promise to keep at it. Whilst on the subject, let’s enjoy the Latin Summer.

inbox everyday heroes I Love JD specially because I had the pleasure of following the dream from scratch. On the interview section there is always someone very interesting and usually very well known, after all we all love to know more about other people, however there are a number of interesting and much less well known "Brasilians, so to speak" that are doing a fantastic job and becoming very successful on their own. I hope you find the time and space to interview and showcase those inspirational people that are working so hard. Lucy Miller London, e-mail Lucy, we always try to find space for new faces and will surely keep looking on. Don't you worry. I BEG TO DIFFER I really like the magazine because I think it tackles interesting subjects about Brasilian culture in a way which is not stereotyped. Not talking of simply football, samba and capoeira... I was very pleased to see Mira Schendel in the June edition for example! The design of the magazine is very good, only I think there's a lot of ads, which is ok as the mag is free. Liana Neves
Indeed, deconstructing and going beyond the stereotypes is essential, paramount in Jungle's cause, and it's great to bring this to you for free, as whether via editorial or advert we aim to provide a platform for new Brasilian talent. Enjoy! JD IT'S ALL IN THE MIX As a Brasilian living abroad, each day I value more and more my roots! We do this mixture in a peaceful and colourful way, and I'm very proud to be part of this. Cibele Amaral Great to hear so Cibele! And this is exactly what this edition is celebrating! Jungle is quite proud of promoting Latin events in London and we always intend to find space for new artists from the whole continent. ΩOTTµ KNOW If there’s one undeniably Brasilian product which has been a success story the world over – despite carrying the name of another country – it’s Havaiana flip-flops. Created in 1962 and inspired by the Japanese Zori sandals made from rice straw (which explains the trademark design on the Havaiana sole), they were soon to be seen adoring feet of all nationalities. At the Oscars they are one of the exclusive gifts offered to attendees; and at Glastonbury they are the de rigeur alternative to green wellies, (weather permitting). The latest “real deal” Havaianas (the company often speaks out against fake imitations) took pride of place in the auction house this month, as part of an initiative in conjunction with Selfridges. A handful of fashionistas were chosen to customise their own pair, with designs by Naomi Campbell, Manolo Blahnik, Matthew Williamson, Paul Smith, Alek Wek, Alice Temperley, Daniella Issa Helayel, Anglo-Brasilian duo Basso & Brooke, Lulu Guinness, Jade Jagger, Jade Parfitt, Jasmine Guinness, Manish Arora and Sam Taylor-Wood. The sandals were sold online by the charity auctioneers Buy Once Give Twice, and bidding was closed on July 3rd, with all funds raised to be donated to CLIC Sargent, a charity caring for children with cancer. At the time of Jungle going to press, the highest bid was for a sandal by legendary shoe designer Manolo Blahnik, which was going for £500. To find out how much each pair raised, and to see who designed what, have a look on our site. The bad news is that these Havaianas won’t be available for regular shoppers: They're strictly collectors’ items. JD

JD JULHO 2009 JungleDrums 11

golden era revisited
rio producer does some musical soul-searching in angola From a country long associated with war and blood diamonds, comes a compilation which serves to remind us that there is much more to Angola – as well as reinforcing its century-long ties with another Portuguese-speaking giant: Brasil. Comfusões, featuring Brasilian remixes of old Angolan classics, is the brainchild of Mauricio Pacheco, a Brasilian producer who has been visiting the Southern African country on music business since 2002 – the year which marked the end of three decades of war and the beginning of an oil boom which continues today. It was during one of his annual visits that Mauricio became interested in the soulful sound of the 60's and 70’s – a golden era for Angolan music, but which came at a time of massive political upheaval and the outbreak of a war which would plague the country for a whole generation. For Mauricio, the two countries have more than just a language in common: “There is a strong musical relationship between Angola and Brasil; they fit well together.", explains the producer, who has collaborated with some of Angola’s most important musicians, including Paulo Flores and Wyza. "There’s the Brasilian element in Angolan music and the Angolan element in Brasilian music; they go together like old friends.” Mauricio doesn’t deny there's an evangelising mission behind his compilation: “I hope that people start paying attention," he says eagerly, "and take part in the dialogue – it’s starting now.” JD by Ana Naomi
JD
JUNGLE'S REVIEW COMFUSões
The title of Mauricio Pacheco’s compilation album is a play on words in Portuguese, uniting ‘Confusions’ and ‘With Fusions’. And, to be fair, it’s a bit of both - mostly in a good way. If you don’t know anything about Angolan music you’re unlikely to recognise the tracks, but it’s easy to believe that the husky lyrics and raw, plucked guitar sounds come from the classics of Angolan soul. Pacheco is fortunate enough to count amongst his friends some of Brasil’s most talented young producers, and it shows. The remixes are, for the most part, intuitive and sensitive, throwing new light and muchdeserved attention onto an almostforgotten era in African music, as well as showcasing the Brasilian producers.

back to the forró “In the Northeast of Brasil, my music is considered MPB. In the Southeast, it's seen as forró. When I go abroad, my work's classifed as World Music. In reality, I'm actually a Brasilian musician who also plays forró". Dismissive of labels, Geraldo Azevedo arrives in London this month for "a big festive party" featuring songs off his recently released DVD. This will be the second time that the musician has come to play in London, a city he has close emotional ties with. His son Lucas has lived here for seven years and is a member of Banda Da Ladeira, who will be opening the show. "During this gig, I'll be performing alongside musicians who live in London and have never played with me before, which means that my expectations are even higher", reveals Geraldo, anxious about his big party. "No Nordeste, me consideram cantor de MPB. No Sudeste, forrozeiro. JD

Fusing Brasilian rhythm and English charm, physical theatre company FlamingoFeather will be taking to the stage of the Pleasance in July with two plays featuring an interesting mix of theatre, mime, movement and multi-media: Black Dog and The Beekeeper. Founded in 2006 by Brasilian Ilana Gorban and Britishborn Simon Rice, FlamingoFeather has developed an interdisciplinary approach to creating performance pieces. "We create original, aesthetically captivating devised work that deals with contemporary issues such as depression, and the Catholic Church", explains Ilana. Black Dog is a play with a distinctly Brasilian rhythm and vibe, and an an international production. The onewoman show, devised and performed by Ilana and directed and choreographed by Simon, focuses on mental health, portraying the life of a woman who creates an external environment of friendship and pleasure for herself through the use of technology. In The Beekeeper, on the other hand, the character Simon Rice is a typical Englishman who struggles with an ethical dilemma regarding the Catholic Church. Ilana explains that the main difference between the two performances is that "in The Beekeeper the text plays a more fundamental role, whilst in Black Dogs, the use of images is crucial to the show's development, expressing the character's shifting emotional states". The Anglo-Brasilian company are now getting set to tour the UK. Their next stop? Brasil, of course. JD by Glauce Lucas

E a próxima parada? O Brasil, claro. Brasil Now Boarding JD meets the new kids on the deck words by Milo Steelefox picture by christiancouzens.com
Early in February 2006 I was sat waiting for a little boat over to Fort São Marcelo in All Saints’ Bay, Salvador, to catch the training day of the Batalha do Forte skate competition. A guy rolled up on his board cross-legged, and I thought to myself “what’s this wisecrack up to?”. The wise-crack turned out to be Og de Souza, a skater who, with legs that didn’t develop fully when he was a child, began riding a board to get around. Using his hands to push along he wound up fully pro. Sliding forward three years I’m in the LCB surf store in Camden, sat with two young Brasilian skaters, Rafael Leffa and Saimon de Oliveira. “Og’s a big hit in the US, he’s real old school”, reflects Rafael, hailing characters like Og as a massive inspiration for young skaters back home, and pondering the way in which Brasil’s youth of today look towards and aspire more to the UK than the USA. Rafael, 17, and Saimon, 20, fit Jungle’s Young Blood profile a treat; whilst both are young, it’s Saimon who provides the blood, revealing a bandaged leg he took a layer of skin off at the recently opened Mile End skate park they frequent – not to mention having broken his knee in Brasil previously, which meant 8 months out of action. Having arrived in England aged 14, Rafael went straight into school where he picked English up fast, and even helped out teaching P.E. The boys met skating under the South Bank Centre, and it was their persistent nagging of the LCB store to stock more skate stuff that made the shops diversify and, importantly, sponsor them. Having skated briefly for Globe Shoes, Rafael now works at the shop, and teaches a bit too. Rafael's desire to skate was all about the ollie. His dad skated bowls, so he in turn sought out pipes and ramps; from then on in “every day there was a new trick”. What does the summer hold?, I ask. The extreme sports festival NASS, and routing out Barcelona's best spots - they simply don’t shut up about Barcelona. Boy, to be young and on wheels. JD 16 JungleDrums JULY 2009
The riding's on the wall
JD

Benjamim woos his audience with style
A musical voyage taking in a range of styles, from traditional Brasilian rhythms such as maracatu and ciranda to jazz, classical, and Arabic music: this pretty much sums up pianist Benjamim Taubkin’s unique musical output. Taubkin began his journey aged three, listening to his mother sing and play the instrument that would go on to make her son famous. The pianist arrives in London on the 28th to finalise his latest tour, which began in Morocco on the 2nd July, and included shows in Tarragona, Barcelona and Vienna. “I think London has a really intense energy, and there are lots of people here who are into both Brasilian music and experimental jazz. There seems to be room for a range of different styles”, observes the pianist. Taubkin’s latest album was recorded in New York, at the exlcusive Fazioli Salon, belonging to one of the world’s most important piano manufacturers. In Brasil, Benjamim set up the label Núcleo Contemporâneo which has been distributing CDs for 12 years. “It was a way we found to produce the music we wanted whilst assuring a high level of quality and a sense of artistic freedom at all levels”, he explains.

STRANGE CONNECTIONS IGGY BOSSA AND JOBIM
English speakers singing Bossa Nova is hardly groundbreaking – just ask Frank “Blue-Eyes” Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald. But who’d have guessed that 62 year old American artist Iggy Pop’s latest release, Préminaires, which was launched on the 25th May, would include a cover of Tom Jobim and Vinicius’ Insensatez, better known outside Brasil as How Insensitive. This is the singer’s 16th album without The Stooges. His latest work still retains an innovative streak, and is strongly influenced by jazz and Cajun music. According to Pop, this change in musical style is due to the tedious nature of “brutish idiots with guitars making rubbish music”.
Another native English speaker to use Bossa Nova to sell records recently was British party animal Lily Allen, whose album Remixed, as the name suggests, features a remix of her song Fuck You that hearks back to the era of João Gilberto and co. Hardly innovative, seeing as Bossa Nova had already won over major stars on the international music scene long before this darling of the British tabloids jumped on the bandwagon. by Érika Mc Knight

neguinho da beija-flor lands at guanabara for special gig “Look everyone it’s Beija-Flor!!!”. Next year, Luís Antônio Feliciano Marcondes will be calling out his famous catch-phrase yet again when he arrives at the Sambadrome in Rio de Janeiro. This time, Neguinho da Beija-Flor, as the singer is better known, will have even more reason to take in a deep breath and shout out loud; he’ll be celebrating his 35th year as the lead singer of the Beija-Flor de Nilópolis Samba School. But before this memorable day comes around, the samba singer will be commemorating another victory: Neguinho is coming to play in London for the first time ever. “I’m really happy that I’m going to be able to see all the Brasilians living over here”, reveals an excited Neguinho, who’ll be taking to the stage at Guanabara on the 4th August alongside many of the percussionists and dancers from Beija-Flor. And there are even more great reasons for him to celebrate. At the beginning of the year, Neguinho made the headlines in Brasil after announcing that he was fighting a common enemy of men and women across the globe; cancer. “I’m still under observation, I have chemotherapy and radiotherapy. But we’ll be celebrating a possible cure during this European tour, it's a way of saying thanks to all those who supported and prayed for me”, he explains. During his trip to London, part of a tour including Italy, Holland, and Portugal, Neguinho will release two CDs and two DVDs. For those who think Samba Schools contribute to the view of Brasilian women as sexual objects, Neguinho has this response: “Brasilian women are sensual and Carnival is an event that showcases this sensuality”. JD by Morena Madureira
“Olha a Beija-Flor aí, geeeeeeeeeente!”. Even before taking a look at the artist roster, Luaka Bop's commemorative compilation deserves kudos for the mere fact
Tradition in Transition that the record label founded by David Byrne managed to survive 21 years in a dire industry - just ask the big players how tough times have been in the digital era. 21st Century, 21st year is a class reunion with some of the names sheltered by Luaka Bop in these decades, including names whose careers were projected abroad by Byrne's patronage - Jorge Ben and Tom Zé stand up as blatant examples. The album also showcases the diversity of Luaka's roster, from the Afropop of Zap Mama to the latino disco of Los Amigos Invisibles, although for many music lovers the presence of tracks by Byrne and Os Mutantes might seem a bit lazy, Still, it's worthy a spin. columbia's egg Tradition in Transition is the latest from bearded West-country wonderboy Will ‘Quantic’ Holland. Recently relocated to Colombia, he’s assembled his Combo Bárbaro from an all-star cast of Latin American musical talent including the incredible Arthur Veroca - who could be the most important Brasilian musician you’ve never heard of. From composing for Gal Costa, to arranging for Jorge Ben, his fingerprints are all over Brasil’s musical history. Often his best work was done behind the scenes, and it seems this influence has rubbed off on Holland, who takes a step back to let the assembled talent shine through. Accompanied by a short film that documents the stories behind the album, Tradition in Transition is an ambitious album that largely lives-up to its promise, providing a snapshot of the magic that can happen when musical cultures collide. Tradition in Transition é o mais recente projeto do menino prodígio barbudo Will ‘Quantic’ Holland.
The recession has certainly affected plans for anyone looking to take a cruise across the Atlantic this year, but in a classic case of the mountain coming to Mohammed, London is getting set for the most Latin summer in recent history. A varied line-up of events will take place in the capital during the hottest months of the year, featuring well-known acts and up-and-coming artists that should offer something for everyone – from the gracious yet firm steps of Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta to the challenging rhythms of the SpokFrevo Orquestra and the irreverent swing of Orquestra Imperial, as well as the Carnaval del Pueblo at Burgess Park, Europe’s largest Latino festival. The difficult part will be choosing from the array of different options on offer, even if you’re just looking to recharge your batteries or quench your thirst: today, Latin bars and restaurants in London are as diverse as the most “caliente” continent on the planet itself, offering an array of culinary delights that transcend feijoada, picanha, caipirinhas and glasses of Merlot…

picante Faithful to the meaning of the adjective in Spanish, the Picante! project will spice up the music scene in London with a showcase of Latin-related acts. The marathon begins on July 12th, when Jungle’s favourite megatroupe, Orquestra Imperial, brings the gafieira, a fusion of ballroom dancing and samba, to the Koko. Three days later, the mood switches to a whole new amalgamation - the combination of electronica, rock and tango masterminded by Argentinian/Uruguayan collective Bajofondo. The group is led by Gustavo Santaolalla, Oscar winning composer of the Babel and Brokeback Mountain scores. Legendary multi-genre Mexican band Cafe Tacuba, which will step on the stage at the HMV Forum on the 23rd, have chosen London as one of the stops in a 20-date tour that celebrates their 20th anniversary. Their triumphs include awards at the Grammies and you might well have heard them even if you don’t know it, as Tacuba’s songs have featured in some of Mexican cinema’s biggest international hits such as Amores Perros and Y Tu Mamá También, as well as videogames such as Fifa 2004. Their fans in the music world include Beck and American newspaper the L.A. Times who recently claimed that Cafe Tacuba are ‘‘unchallenged in their stature and influence in the Spanish-language rock”. In the year in which Cuba celebrates the 50th anniversary of its glorious revolution, the country’s most popular band of the moment, Bamboleo, joins the Picante! party for their first UK gig.

In the same month, grab your backpack and head on over to Kentwell Hall in Suffolk for Festinho – a cultural festival that raises funds for the ABC Trust, the NGO that, as anybody who reads Jungle knows, helps Brasilian children in need. free festivals Judging by the weather forecast, summer 2009 won’t just be hot in the figurative sense, which should make the wide range of open air Latin events set to take place in the UK even more appealing. The highlight has to be the Carnaval del Pueblo, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and should live up to its reputation as Europe’s largest Latin event. This year, the celebrations will kick off on the 2nd of August, with an array of activities including shows on four different stages and a popular parade along the streets of South East London – as well as at least 200 stalls selling traditional food and drink. The festival’s headliner will be from Venezuela. While president Chavez made sure he grabbed headlines on his last visit to the capital, now it’s Luiz Felipe Gonzalez’s turn in the spotlight. The veteran singer, who’s been on the road for 45 years, is an old master of salsa who has 105 albums to his name. The line-up for 2009 also includes the first-ever Brasilian Day, an event that’s been organised for years by the Brasilian community in New York and is now making its way to London. To mark the event Leonardo, one of Brasil’s most popular pop-country singers, will headline a green-and-yellow pack of attractions that also includes axé singer Carla Visi as well of DJs. The Peruvian community will have their own event, the Pure Peru Festival, which will celebrate Peruvian independence on the 27th July at the Vibe Bar on Brick Lane. The week before (July 19th), Colombians will get to celebrate at Colombianamente, with a wide array of different activities at Bernie Spain Gardens.

dance nations Thanks to the dazzling pace of Recife’s Carnival, peoples’ attention tends to be focused much more on the steps than the sounds of frevo, one of the most exciting Brasilian rhythms. SpokFrevo Orquestra stepped in 13 years ago to showcase the music behind the physicality. The 18-piece incorporates jazz techniques of improvisation into the traditional frevo songbook - other innovations are the use of electric guitars. dance Dance floors and theatre stages will also be heating up this summer in London. Whether you want to watch or take part, the choice is yours. The most renowned act comes from Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta, who is currently principal guest dancer at the Royal Ballet in London, and will perform five shows at the Coliseum from the 22nd to the 25th July. Carlos Acosta & Guests (including Brasilian Roberta Marquez, star of The Royal Ballet) is “the dance event of summer 2009”, according to the English National Opera’s website. Winner of the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award, Acosta took to the stage thanks to his father. If the young boy, born and raised in Havana in an apartment shared with his parents and 10 siblings, had been left to his own devices, he would have become a footballer. When he was nine, however he was signed up for ballet lessons and danced with the national Ballet of Cuba until 1998. Since then, he has gone on to be a principal at the Royal Ballet and to produce shows such as Tocororó, a Cuban tale that sold out at Sadler’s Wells and was hailed the “Cuban Billy Elliot” by the Evening Standard. Flamenco Espetacular by Escuela de Baile looks like being a less erudite but potentially more exciting experience. Over 100 students from the Spanish dance school (located in Chalk Farm, in North London) will take to the stage alongside musicians, dancers and guest vocalists for just two performances at the Peacock Theatre on the 18th and 19th July. The main guest is dancer Juan Ogalla, one of the legends of Spanish flamenco, who danced at the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympics.

art If you thought Diego Maradona was a hell-raiser, think again: decades before the famed footballer plied his trade around the world, the Grupo de Artistas de Vanguardia, a collective of artists also hailing from Argentina, wrought havoc in art galleries with what has become known as some of the most important examples of political and investigative art in Latin America. One example is their famous Experimental Art Cycle, a series of individual exhibitions that took place in Rosario, in 1968: on the opening night of her event, artist Graciela Carnevale locked the guests in the exhibition space and they only escaped when a passing member of the public smashed the gallery’s glass window. The Grupo de Artistas de Vanguardia will have their first major exhibition in the UK at the Pumphouse Gallery, Battersea Park, until July 19th. Meanwhile, at Galeria 32, another veteran will be honoured: Regina Vater was born in Rio de Janeiro and lived alongside a group of artists and intellectuals in the ‘60s who produced extremely important work musically and artistically. Founding movements such as Bossa Nova and Cinema Novo, Regina exhibited her work for the first time in 1964 and has never looked back since.

party You would probably need a whole phone book to map all the Latin parties taking place in London this summer. But a good starting point is to check out the transformation that will take place at The Egg: the club will be turned into a beach venue with sand, swimming pool and barbeques - as well as some sizzling parties, including Jungle’s own Sambatralia on July 25th. underground restaurants the underground restaurant movement that mixes spices and thrills in london You don’t need to be part of the “in” crowd to hear about the underground restaurant movement. Paying to dine with strangers at a clandestine location instead of eating at a mainstream restaurant is all the rage in London at the moment, and the word is spreading like wildfire. Secret eateries in themselves are not a novelty – Paris-based American writer Jim Haynes has hosted open-door dinners for the past 30 years, and “locked-door restaurants” or “paladares” have been around for decades in the US and South America. So what’s new about it and why now? One key factor is the recession –people still want to have fun whilst ensuring value for their
pennies. The rise of social media such as Facebook, Twitter and blogs has boosted the trend, which could also work as an attractive business idea for those with a flair for cooking and creativity. The underground eating fever in London started earlier this year, one of the pioneers being Ms Marmite Lover, who now hosts secret suppers at her house in Kilburn for over 30 people every Saturday. Ms ML is one hell of a smart woman. A media type herself, she works the crowd with her loud dressing and talking, entertaining the eminent guests who help prepare the meal on her £8,000 Aga oven. And, of course, there’s the thrill of doing something illegal.
When I was eating there, a girl was singled out to pretend it was her birthday, just in case the police showed up. “The guests love the fact that it’s a bit of a naughty thing. But I could go to jail for this, so I have to be careful,” she told me, adding that she won’t allow people to take pictures of herself or anything that could identify the house. The success of Ms ML’s suppers has been such that since January, she has more than doubled the price of her three-course meal – now £25 a head – and is now planning several spin-off projects, including a book, a TV documentary and her own food range. While the publicity around the trend is welcome for the majority of secret restaurant

Qual é a grande novidade, então?

hosts, The Salad Club organisers Rosie French and Ellie Grace want to avoid being associated with a cliché. “We’ve had some phenomenal coverage, but also people suggesting the same old ideas for documentaries... But TV wants drama and we’d probably be portrayed as competing with other secret restaurants, which is not the idea at all,” said Ellie. After a successful start in May, the £20-a-head dinners take place monthly at Ellie’s flat by Brixton Market, where the duo get most of their groceries. An allotment at Rosie’s place is also in progress and should provide ingredients for the winter events. Despite the hazy legalities of pop-up
restaurants and the fact that diners are often total strangers – and possibly a bit dodgy – the girls believe that the trust element of the movement will keep them out of trouble. “This is a risky thing to do, but if someone abused that trust it would be very uncool”, says Ellie. Like Ms Marmite Lover, Rosie and Ellie believe that after the excitement around secret restaurants is gone, only those who have a real interest and sense of dedication will remain on the scene. “We never thought we would be part of a movement. It’d be great to tell our kids that we were part of it, but hopefully [the suppers] will be part of a legacy and not
just a flash in the pan.” Other hosts have a more specific approach. Portuguese chef Nuno Mendes – formerly from haute-cuisine Spanish hype El Bulli – is using his dining club as a test platform for his restaurant and “cooking gallery”, both set to launch early next year. Nuno charges £100 per person for the experience and can accommodate up to 16 guests fortnightly at his stylish Dalston loft, serving around 12 dishes and eight varieties of wine. Despite the price, he is already fully booked until September. “It’s not cheap, but I spend more than a restaurant would on good quality products and my costs are quite high”, he explains. JD
The secret dinners can be much more sofisticated than they seem in finding delicious ways to break the health and safety regulations...
Your donation could help nine teams on their way to the 2009 Homeless World Cup Milan is almost ready for the 2009 Homeless World Cup in September, and Rio de Janeiro is set to host the tournament next year. This year the championship, which was founded in 2003, will bring 400 athletes together to play in Italy’s wealthiest city. Ironically, there’s just one thing missing to guarantee the competition’s success: money. Dependent on sponsorship and donations, the Scotland-based Homeless World Cup Foundation, which organises the event, still needs £90,000 to finance the participation of nine squads (including teams from the Ivory Coast, India and Ghana). The foundation has estimated a total cost of £1,000 per athlete, and £1.7 million for the tournament as a whole. Forty-eight teams will battle it out for the title, which last year went to Afghanistan the Brasilian team came in seventh place. In the world of homeless football, it has to be said, Brasil is far from royalty: the team’s
best-ever ranking was at the first event, when they came in fourth place. The Brasil squad is managed by the Civil Organisation of Social Action (Ocas), which also publishes a magazine (like a Brasilian Big Issue), sold on the streets of Rio and São Paulo by people at risk. For the second year running, Ocas will be holding the National League of Street Football to select the best athletes to represent Brasil in Milan. Restricted at the moment to the centre of the country, the League will be promoted through partnerships with other NGOs and thanks to financial support from both São Paulo’s local authorities and private enterprise. Guilherme Araújo, director of Ocas, is confident that next year’s Homeless World Cup in Rio de Janeiro will promote the event further and attract more sponsorship from different organisations. “Next year, the league will take Brasil by storm”, he reveals. To compete, athletes need to be at least 16 years old, have been living on the streets
the lil’ ones’ turn
since at least September 2008, or earn a living collecting recyclable material. People recovering from drug or alcohol addiction are also welcome. In the case of the Brasil squad, the young players chosen also need to be studying full time. According to the Homeless World Cup Foundation, over 70% of the players make drastic life changes after taking part in the competition. “Six months after the event, we follow up the players to see what they’re up to. The majority have quit drink and drugs and found work”, reveals Kat Boyles, the Foundation’s Director of Communication and Events. The seven-day long championship has its own special rules: each team has four players, sides can be all-male, all-female or mixed. You can help by making a donation online at www.justgiving.com/ homelessworldcupfoundation/ or by buying books, DVDs and T-shirts (for as little as £5) on the foundation’s website. JD
Donations can also help the dreams of other disadvantaged football players: in March 2010, eight teams of street children from will compete in the first ever ‘Street Child World Cup’ in Durban, South Africa to showcase their talent ;and ABC Trust will be leading Team Brazil. To make this happen, however, they need funding, which you can raise by organising a sponsored tournament. Log on to abctrust.org.uk for more detail. And put your boots on!
JD

Sunset, sea & solitude: a triad offered by Noronha as a romantic set for birds and lovebirds in the island

we take a short and sweet look at the top honeymoon destinations for couples in brasil The decision is far from simple, which is hardly surprising; after months if not years of being engaged, you’ve finally found the courage to tie the knot and reach a decision about where to spend your honeymoon. Choosing a holiday destination is easy; all you need to do is get excited about some exotic location you’ve seen on TV, trawl the internet, buy a package- deal with flights and hotel accommodation thrown in and violà! Your next trip is all sorted. However, when it comes to relaxing after your wedding, your very future as a couple is at stake. If every couple could write a book about their romance, the postcard from their honeymoon would probably be the cover of “Volume Two: And They Lived Happily
Ever After”. So, how do you go about making such a crucial choice? The trip needs to be relaxing and intense, whilst providing unforeseeable situations which the couple can bond over and reminisce about whenever nerves fray in the future. With this challenge in mind, we decided to take you along the coastline, across the mountains and through the tropical rainforests of Brasil to bring you the country’s best honeymoon destinations.
Unspoilt pleasures in Fernando de Noronha | The jewel in the crown of Brasil’s coastline isn’t a household name, nor is it located close to
traditional destinations like Rio, Salvador or Recife. On the contrary, the Fernando de Noronha Nature Sanctuary is an archipelago 345km off the coast, a distance which has left its delicate ecosystem and breathtaking beaches practically untouched, so much so that the region was selected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Life on the peaceful island revolves around surfers looking for the perfect wave, sea turtles coming in to lay their eggs on the fine sand and couples exploring wild beaches and dolphin spotting. As for entertainment, there’s the sunset at Forte do São Francisco; you can watch the fishermen trawl in their nets at Praia de Cacimba do Padre and you can wind up the day staring at the star-lit sky,

A room with a view in Rio | Wedged between mountains and coastline, Rio de Janeiro is the first port of call for nine out of ten package holidays, a place where your senses are stimulated every waking moment thanks to the city’s romantic views and internationally renowned beaches. No visit to Rio is complete without at least one day spent soaking up the rays on Ipanema. Brasil’s most famous beach is a microcosm
of Rio society, a place to watch and be watched, as bronzed bodies rub shoulders with athletes, artists and mere mortals like you and I. It's heaving, 24 hours a day, and in the evening people head for the local bars, clubs and restaurants. Practically self-sufficient, many visitors barely leave the area during their stay. Ipanema Plaza has ocean-view rooms and special honeymoon services from £190pp per day, including welcome pamper basket and breakfast served in your room (goldentulipipanemaplaza.com)
Exclusive pampering in Muro Alto | The Northeast region has the largest stretch of coastline in Brasil; an abundant source of beaches just waiting
to become the next big thing. One of the most up-and-coming destinations on the Brasilian coast is Muro Alto, close to the popular Porto de Galinhas in Pernambuco, with natural swimming pools protected by coral reefs, turquoise sea water and coconut trees lining the beach. Whilst its famous neighbour has become a bona fide international tourist destination, Muro Alto still offers visitors peace and quiet at its exclusive resorts. The most romantic hotel to spend your honeymoon at, flitting between sandy beaches and luxury suites, is the Nannai Beach Resort. With an air of Tahiti or the Maldives, the hotel has eight spacious bungalows built on stilts, all facing the sea with a private swimming pool.

]daV! hZŠdg XdXdcji IF YOU CANNOT KEEP IT NATURAL, CHOOSE YOU COCO WISELY People who venture through the ethnical aisles of a big supermarket have probably come across cans of coconut water, a beverage that is a popular weapon of choice at seaside locations in Brasil and the Caribbean. However, while the original liquid is usually gulped from the true nut, many of the industrialised versions end up with added sugar to preserve the flavour. This not only makes the â€œĂĄgua de cĂ´coâ€? more caloric but also prevent drinkers from benefiting from its natural properties. “Coconut water is a natural isotonic with elevated nutritional value, with studies also claiming it might help growth in infants and tackle osteoporosis in elderly peopleâ€?, says Brazilian doctor AntĂ´nio Santos. Fortunately, the healthier alternatives are available in these shores. Zico Natural, for example, offers packaged coconut water without sugar and additives and claims it is hand-harvested from green coconuts in Brasil, which guarantees an ideal level of potassium that is claimed to be 15 times higher than commercial sports drinks. breakfast of champions. ,& KEY:

Xdon Vg\Zci^cZ When it comes to Argentinian restaurants, the first thing you think of is succulent steaks. Constancia, which opened just over a month ago, carries on this proud tradition: steak is definitely the main attraction. The house specialty is Parrillada, grilled steak with chorizo and provolone cheese, served with French fries and fresh bread. Delicious. It should come as no surprise: the owners of the restaurant, brothers Santiago and Sebastian, who’ve lived in London for the past five years, brought over an aunt of theirs who is an expert in Argentinian cuisine to take charge of the restaurant kitchen. The result is an array of mouthwatering dishes such as home-made chorizos and tasty empanadas; and pasties made with a special pastry filled with minced meat. The wine list is also superb, with a wide variety of options to suit all budgets. The restaurant’s atmosphere is very pleasant and the dÊcor conjures up an Argentinian country estate, managing to be both sophisticated and cozy at the same time. The music is all Latin, and features not only tango, but also Brasilian artists such as Rita Lee and Os Mutantes (the owners are fans of Brasilian MPB). All this, together with the restaurant’s first-rate service, mean that even Brasilian customers put old rivalries to one side and end up feeling right at home.

bVhiZgh d[ lgVe Let’s be honest, eating wraps is not easy. You could almost say it’s an art – and one which requires practice. Good to know there are now two Tortillas in town, then. These Californian/Mexican-inspired joints specialise in burritos, fajitas and tacos, and have recently opened a branch in Bank, in addition to the first outlet in Angel. Amongst the tasty fillings you can choose from there is Tortilla’s special lime and corriander rice, different bean stews, and other treats such as slow-cooked Pork, freshly made Guacamole and three homemade sauces with jalapeno peppers – and varying degrees of spiciness! For those of us (such as food journalists) who need to watch our waistlines, Tortilla also do a ‘Naked Burrito’ – which means you get the fillings without the tortilla. And if you’re an amateur wrap-eater, there’s the soft taco option, which will get you two small wraps and the fillings. Highly recommended as a starter or on-the-go snack are the tortilla chips and dips, and the bottled beers. You can sit inside, or outside and watch the world go about its business or, if it’s a quick, tasty snack you’re after, get yours wrapped to go. If you’re there Monday – Friday at lunch time you can get a bottomless soft drink for 40p, and at between —4.10 and —5.60 a wrap, it’s totally bargainous.

What do you do for a living? I run a London based film production company with a partner. How did you find out about Jungle? Through friends and nightlife. Why do you read Jungle? It is written really well and opens a door to another London for me. What's your favourite section? I always read the film reviews first, like I look at the cartoons in the private eye first, but every issue has something new about it. I am a food fanatic and also enjoy the music reviews... This question is tricky! Do you have a favourite article? In the November issue "Brasilian six changes" was brilliant because it covered everything from film and music to "the Brasilian martyr" Jean

Charles de Menezes, who was sot at my station, Stockwell... What would you like to see more of in the magazine? You've got the wrong guy for this question. I really like the magazine, but I can always do with more film, food and music. What is your favourite place in Brasil? I am a real fan of the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer in Brasilia. Who is your favourite famous Brasilian? Adriana Lima! When you hear the word 'Brasil', what's the first thing that springs to mind? Nuts. It's not the most important or distinctive, but the first thing that springs to mind. That is the problem with honest associations. ,&
