Chris Craft of Edward Jones

Community. Helping people. These aren’t words you would normally associate with a financial planner, but they are of utmost important to Chris Craft of Edward Jones, whose office is in the Somersett Town Center. If you’ve been to EGGstravaganza or the Somersett Fall Festival, you may have met Chris. He’s the one who sponsors those amazing gift baskets that finders of the Golden Egg or winners of the Halloween costume contest proudly take home. He has coached Little League and flag football and served on community boards - all part of his commitment to supporting the Northwest Reno community he is a part of.

Originally from Mississippi, Chris attended San Jose State on a full football scholarship and since graduation has racked up 22 years of financial planning experience. “Experience is key in this business,’’ he says.

And experience with financial matters is something that many people lack. “Figuring out what to do with your money can be overwhelming,’ he says. “I take the time to help my clients identify what they want to spend money on.’’ He helps them prioritize and then makes a plan to achieve those goals. “I can be a rudder for folks,’’ he says.

Chris and his business partner, Vicki Skarda, have worked together for 15 years and have been at the Town Center office for 7 of those years. “I am so lucky to have her,’’ Chris says, because they share the same passion for helping people. Vicki has 25 years of experience in the business and serves as Chris’ senior branch office administrator and partner. “She has a good heart,’’ he says.

Edward Jones offers an array of financial planning – 401Ks, college savings, Legacy Plans, and much more. Chris and Vicki’s office is on the second floor of the Town Center, above Sakana.

Play the Tom Kite-designed Championship Country Club Course

UPDATED 2023 GOLF RATES

Somersett residents are welcome to play the Championship Country Club Course a total of six times per year - four times by making reservations on their own with the golf shop and two as a guest of a member of the Country Club. Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $125 per player (in-season) and $80 per player (off-season, Nov 15 -March 1). We also have a $50 9-hole rate in the off-season. The rates include green fee, driving range usage, and golf cart. We take tee times for residents four days in advance at 787-1800, Ext 2.

Men, please remember our simple dress code of no denim, collared golf shirts, and caps always worn forward. For the ladies, no denim, no spaghetti-strapped tops, bare midriffs, or short shorts. Proper footwear, such as golf shoes or tennis shoes, is required. Please be advised we are cart path only from November through the end of month March.

Driving Range

UPDATED 2023 DRIVING

RANGE RATES

Somersett residents are encouraged to utilize the driving range at the Country Club. In the off-season, from November through approximately April, all residents may utilize the mats on the south side of the range – a short walk up from the Ridgefield Trail parking lot. The north side of the driving range will be closed in the off-season. Juniors MUST be accompanied by an adult. In-season complimentary range usage will be offered on the

cushioned mat located on the north side of the driving range ONLY. We will provide shuttle service during operating hours (provided above) from May through October.

Access to the turf range, putting green, and chipping green is available for a cost of $15 per person per day, payable at the golf shop prior to usage. You MUST show your receipt to the attendant OR golf professional on the range prior to utilizing. Juniors again must be accompanied by an adult. The turf is available from May through October ONLY.

Men, please remember our simple dress code of no denim, collared golf shirts, and caps always worn forward. For the ladies, no denim, no spaghetti-strapped tops, bare midriffs, or short shorts. Proper footwear, such as golf shoes or tennis shoes, is required.

Winter/Snow Season

We kindly ask that you refrain from winter activities on both of our golf courses during the winter season. We do not allow tubing, tobogganing, sledding, saucering, skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, etc. on either golf course. Damage caused by this activity becomes apparent in the spring and playing conditions are greatly sacrificed. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Great Time to Join

The golf course has never been better in my 16 years here as the Director of Golf. Robert DiPietro and Taylor Halinski have done an outstanding job maintaining the course at championship caliber throughout the season. Full Privilege Memberships, Mid-Week Memberships, Corporate Memberships, and Social Memberships are offered. Our new Single Membership has been extremely popular. Dues are inclusive of all cart fees and range fees. Contact Tanya Polli, Marketing and Sales, at 787-1800, Ext. 102. Make 2023 the year you entertain a golfing lifestyle.

Our 4,000-square-foot indoor Short Game Arena is another great reason to join us here at Somersett Golf & Country Club. The arena remains the only of its kind in Reno and is available for members only and is a shared asset with the UNR men’s and women’s golf programs.

Golf Tip

Putting can be a great winter activity. There is no other aspect of your game that can improve your game as much as working on your putting skillsets.

1. Practice aiming your putter to hit the ball on your desired line. Simply place a golf ball on the tail end of a ruler or yardstick and do your best to roll the ball the entire length of the stick. You can stand behind the ruler and aim at a specific target. If your putter face is aligned to the back edge of the stick, it makes sense that you have aimed in the exact direction that the ruler is pointing at. Reducing errors in aim will allow your putting

stroke to have a better flow, leading to improved putter face control through the stroke. Simplify, simplify, simplify! There are fewer moving parts in a perfectly aimed putter.

2. Remember your Tempo – 2:1 OR as I like to teach, Ap-Ple-Pie. Two counts back and one count through regardless of the length of the putt. All putting strokes are less than one second in total elapsed time. Length of roll on the ball is varied by length of backstroke in accordance with a constant 2:1 tempo.

Happy New Year – See you soon for golf!

BOARD PROFILE

Lance Fithian SOA Treasurer

OCCUPATION: Chief Operating Officer of Aurigin Capital Management

YEARS IN RENO:

Three years in Reno, 5 years in Tahoe.

ORIGINALLY FROM: Born in Indiana and further raised in the Chicago suburbs.

WHY DID YOU RUN FOR THE BOARD?

Upon moving to Somersett, I began engaging with residents and hearing of existing issues within the community.

I started attending Board meetings, listening to fellow residents, asking questions, interacting with Board members and the community management, and reading documents. I observed that the community faced

diverse issues, whether it was safety, fire prevention, finances, maintenance, lack of communication, etc. I observed how the current Board, community management, committees, and residents positively engaged these issues. This made me optimistic vs. disenchanted and pushed me to get more involved in improving the future of Somersett.

WHAT STRENGTHS/SKILLS DO YOU BRING TO THE BOARD?

Due to high inflation and our aging infrastructure, our budgeting and Reserves accounts will be of the utmost importance. It will be a very delicate balance of holding down assessments, maintaining our facilities, making improvements, and strengthening our Reserves to maintain our property values. This is closer to my background and training which may allow me to quickly add value. My career has required me to

Romeo and Juliet My ‘sweet, goofy’ collies,

Romeo and Juliet have great personalities! They are both goofy, sweet, loving, gentle, intelligent, and loyal doggies. Romeo is the goofiest of the two. He likes to talk! He starts with soft woofing and wagging his tail with his nose in the air. That makes Juliet go get a toy so we can play fetch or keep-away. I like to toss the toy or ball in the air and then he catches it, and Juliet brings it back. Ha, ha, he uses her as his little servant! Juliet is almost 6 and is a Merle collie. She is very athletic and so sweet. Romeo is 9.5 and is a Sable white-factored collie. They are absolutely in love with each other. He is a TRUE Romeo!

They both know lots of tricks and when we show them off to friends they’re always impressed. Romeo is especially

eager to do tricks as he loves treats so much. He does a special “paw crossing” trick and he nods up and down if I ask him if he loves his Mommy. Makes everyone laugh!

We do love to go to the doggie park (at Somersett West Park). Everyone falls in love with Romeo and Juliet and many people tell me that they had a collie when they grew up. Whenever we take walks in Somersett, we get stopped so people can admire them, and I’ve made friends because of them in my three years here (in Somersett).

I was born in Reno and am a fourth-generation native Nevadan. My relatives on the Reed side were part of the Donner-Reed party!

Open Spaces are a Critical Resource

We want to see open lands preserved and protected from exploitation. This organization was formed in 2020 because we believe we can be a uniting entity towards this purpose. We are small but mighty, leveraging our passion and commitment towards tangible positive impact.

Wildwood Open Lands Foundation is a local, Nevada notfor-profit corporation, designated 501(c)(3) conservation organization. We are based in Washoe County. Our current efforts are focused solely on northwestern Nevada.

We believe that open spaces are critical resources, irreplaceable, and invaluable to human and ecological stability, best preserved by united, dedicated individuals and businesses.

Our approach is, in part, to preserve open spaces through privately funded efforts to purchase and preserve tracts of undisturbed, open land for sale on the real estate market. No government funding, no public resources. In all that we do, this effort is the most critical, most challenging, and where we need the most assistance to be successful.

When four colleagues, passionate about the outdoors, dedicated to preserving natural resources, exploring Nevada’s wilderness, and devoted to their community join forces – the result is the Wildwood Open Lands Foundation.
PROFILE

What is valued is preserved

We are travelers, sportsmen, and outdoors-enthusiasts. What is valued is preserved. Wildwood Expedition is a channel of communication where we share our experiences to natural and cultural locations, how those travels were meaningful to us in effort to inspire others to travel and make personal connections as well. We share these experiences through our own blog site wildwoodexpedition.com as well as on social media platforms: Facebook and Instagram.

We invite other travelers, explorers, researchers, and scientists to participate in exploratory trips as well as to contribute to the Wildwood Expedition online publication.

As a native Nevadan, I have always felt a deep connection to the outdoors and exploring our great state. There is so much that Nevada has to offer to those wanting to explore mountains, rivers, lakes, and the desert. The diversity keeps me longing for more and more exploration trips across our state.

When Jeff approached me about Wildwood Open Lands Foundation and serving on the Board of Directors, I jumped at the opportunity to join an organization that encompasses all that I am passionate about with regards to advocacy, conservation, and education of our precious resources. I am dedicated to being an advocate for open lands in my home state while expanding my experiences throughout the western United States.

As a side note, I moved to Somersett approximately two years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed living in this community. I have met some truly amazing people and have forged new friendships along the way. It is not lost on me that the Somersett community I call home is the exact area I used to ride my bike, hike, and target practice during my youth. I still get out into the hills surrounding us only now the hikes are slower, the biking less steep, and the target practice reserved for the range.

Timothy Garcia-Jay lives in The Village and serves as a foundation board director for Wildwood Open Lands Foundation.

Wildwood Conservancy is the land preservation and stewardship operation of the Foundation. In 2022 we partnered with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful and adopted Betsy Caughlin Donnelly Park. We chose this opportunity because we can utilize our limited local resources to make an immediate tangible difference while engaging with the local community. as we continue raising funds towards our first conservancy land purchase that we embrace as a continuing model for preservation.

We have named our educational function of the foundation Wildwood Heritage. This year we have been focusing on providing education surrounding natural sciences and outdoor ethics. The penultimate objective of Wildwood Heritage is to become a public facing operation that serves to share the travels of Expedition, the achievements of Conservancy, and the programming of Heritage, in an interpretive, discovery center type format.

Join us in our Mission

If you value open spaces as we do, we need your support. We encourage you to become a Friend of the WOLF, volunteer, corporate partner, or donor to our foundation.

2023 will be a busy and exciting year for WOLF. Below are our currently scheduled events for the year. Check our current events schedule at Wildwood Open Lands Foundation for a complete listing.

Volunteer with us at 10am on Saturday March 11th, when we host our first stewardship event of the year at Betsy Caughlin Donnelly Park. All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you. We will also be hosting events at this location in July and November.

In July, the foundation would be honored to host an outreach booth at the Somersett Car Show once again.

We invite you to come visit with us at our booth during the Adventure Van Expo at Lake Tahoe in Late September. We will be showcasing our efforts, sharing the principles of outdoor ethics championed by Leave No Trace and TreadLightly!

Please feel welcome to reach out to info@ wildwoodopenlands.org if you have any questions.

Do you know a Somersett resident/company we should profile? Let us know who they are and what makes them interesting. Email robin.bolson@mysomersett.com.

All community gates will get an upgrade this year!

Somersett Owners Association is in the process of replacing the aging, outdated access system at community gates with a new, cloud-based system and high-resolution cameras. The project is fully funded by the Streets and Gates Reserves. The same system, Verkada, is currently in use at the Club at Town Center.

The new gate access system for Mountain Crest went live on Dec. 1. After Jan. 1 we will move through other community gates one by one, with the rollout expected to be complete sometime in the spring.

Advantages of the new system include:

EASY TO USE: If you have a Verkada Pass app, a key fob, or an access card that opens the Club doors, these devices will open your community gates once the new system is in place. You don’t have to do anything!

SHARPER IMAGES: The high-resolution cameras will provide a huge improvement in the quality of the video captured. The cameras also capture license plates.

SECURITY BOOST: We are replacing the old four-digit gate codes with new, randomly assigned five-digit codes. Adding another digit makes the codes difficult to guess.

MORE RELIABLE: The cloud-based system is wi-fi compatible and eliminates the unreliable landlines and technology of the old system.

What you need to do:

#1 - GET ACCESS: Stop by the front desk at the Club and fill out the access application form.

Option 1: Use the App:

1. Download the Verkada Pass app (it’s free!) We’ll send you an activation link once you fill out the access application.

2. Once downloaded, open your phone’s settings, and click on

the Pass app. Make sure the location is set to “ALWAYS” and that your Bluetooth is turned ON. This is required for your app to work.

3. Open the app and select “Use Password” and then “Forgot Password.” Enter your email address. Note: use the same email address you used on your electronic access application form.

4. Check your email. You’ll receive a “Password Reset” email from Verkada. Simply click the link and create a password. Accept ALL notifications and alerts!

5. Start using the app! Just sign in with your email and password.

Option 2: Use the TCTC Key Card or Key Fob:

1. Stop by the front desk to obtain a key card or key fob and sign the electronic access application form. By doing this now, even if your community gates do not yet have the new access system, you will be all set when the new system goes live in the coming months.

How will I know when my gate system is updated?

About two weeks before each gate goes live with the new system, we will send a notification letter via U.S. mail to each address and will post a large sign near the gate alerting residents that the change is coming. The notification letter will include your new gate code. We will also update our Gate Upgrades page on Somersett.org (look for a link at the top of the home page), and we will send emails to those who opted in to receive them.

What about gate access codes?

We encourage you to use the app/card/fob as your main way to open your community gates, although you are welcome to punch in your code on the keypad if you prefer. Just remember to press # (hashtag) AFTER you punch the code (this is a change from the current system). You are welcome to share your code with your guests, landscapers, Instacart, or anyone else you choose to give access to.

Questions? Email gates@somersett.org or call 775-787-4500, ext. 328.
