Semi-permanent eye-brows with

he eyebrows frame the face. Eyebrows consist of hairs which give shape to the eye. If you look closely at the eyebrows you will notice that the skin between the hairs is visible, but if you look from a distance, the eyebrows usually look solid. In normal semi-permanent make-up methods when the hair strokes are drawn close together leaving no visible skin space, the eyebrows give a drawn look. T

his year it seems, the Maltese are taking over in the world of Fashion, what with Tiffany at BNTM, and Kristen and Leah’s stunt on the LFW runways. JustBeauty caught up with über-talented Kristen Buhagiar over a coffee, no sugar no milk, to get some insider information into the Maltese delegation that participated in last season’s London Fashion week... we probed into the details, and tried to extract a mental image of the delightful backstage chaos... as well as learnt some secret insights into the world of international fashion! How was it that you got the opportunity to participate in London fashion week? I'm hooked up with an agency: InFashion Malta, which is the only agency that’s representing me, and a few months back they organised a Fashion event which boasted the presence of International talent seekers, the likes of Geoff Cox. The event was meant to be a showcase of Maltese talent, of models, make-up artists and designers like Charles and Ron, and Erin Cole. Geoff Cox liked myself and Leah, and basically recruited us to participate in London Fashion Week! The event was in no way a competition, so we had no idea there would be an opportunity to be selected. After the event we had a photoshoot, and it was only then that we were told that we would have to jet off to London in 2 weeks!! It felt extraordinary.

Was it your first experience on an international level as a model? I had done some photo shoots which were used outside of Malta but this was my first runway experience.

What are the hair and beauty instructions that you are given before showing up for a show? We are asked to turn up with clean hair and a clean face, although for my first show I turned up with anything but clean hair and no make up, as the agent called us half an hour before models are called backstage to start getting ready, and when you get an opportunity like that you can’t turn it down. Then again, quite a few models turn up made up and are then asked to clean up. One thing I realised is that its pertinent to not behave like a diva, as a model as you’ll just be sent off... we where on our best behaviour possibly the reason they liked us so much. How would you sum up the environment back stage? It’s chaotic, but not disorganised as one might imagine. There is ample time for everyone to be done up properly. The cue for the hair and make-up crew would be to create a look suitable for the entire line up of designers launching their collections on the day. I felt there was often some degree of misunderstanding as to the extent of this look, and it’s not the first time that the entire cast would have be to re-made. Communication is key, and perhaps there was not enough of this! How does the hair and make-up talent compare to the local scene? Oh! Maltese makeup and hair stylists would shine! I believe we have so much talent, we are professional and we follow instructions well, at the same time we are competitive and want to show off what we are capable of. Of course there would be the supervisors who overlook the work making sure its coherent, and they are very professional style-leaders, but as for the teams at the desks, I believe many Maltese would have done an excellent job. There is a market for local talent, and I encourage Maltese make-up artists and hairdressers to expose and promote themselves and their portfolios abroad. Sometimes all they need is some encouragement because trust me Maltese talent is of high international standard.

How did you feel while being done up? It’s so exciting when you enter backstage, but I have to admit the hair and make-up crew made us feel very comfortable. Every make up artist I’ve worked with uses a different technique to apply the makeup, some I like better than others and it was the same at LFW. Since I’ve had experience doing catwalk shows and fashion shoots I am very analytical about what goes around backstage. We were provided with food and drinks a-plenty. Every model would be assigned to a make up artist and a hair stylist, and they would be responsible for that model from start till finish. Some models seemed happy with their teams others less impressed - however I see this happening every time. What new trends would you say emerged in the realm of hair at the last LFW? Hair was big and frizzy. Even if the front part was slicked back into a pony tail, the pony tail was big and frizzy, but then again every designer has different tastes, so one cannot talk about definite trends.

What about make up? I would say a porcelain face and colourful lips reds and oranges for lips, no neutral shades. Would you do anything differently in terms of preparing yourself if you were to participate in another intensive week like LFW? And what final words of advice do you have for our readers? I would go to the gym... I mean I should go to the gym on a regular basis, so that I'd always be ready. As for the Beauty-workers in Malta... don’t be afraid to go out there, participate in international show-cases, send portfolios, you never know when you’ll have a big break.

with Ms. Katya De Giovanni, FROM THE INSTITUTE OF COMMUNITY SERVICES AT MCAST

So Ms DeGiovanni, in a few sentences tell us about yourself with particular reference to the passions which motivated you to be the queen educator of the next generation of hair and beauty experts in Malta. Courses on hairdressing and beauty therapy are only one of the areas on which the Institute of Community Services focuses. By profession I am an Occupational Psychologist and a trained teacher. At MCAST I used to be a teacher trainer and in my group I had the hairdressing and beauty therapy lecturers. It was then that I became interested in the pedagogy of teaching these subjects to our future hairstylists and therapists. Being a good stylist and therapist is one thing‌..being a teacher in the area is another thing! What are the aims and mission statement of the Institute of Community Services as part of the MCAST? Which of these do you most treasure, and what are you particularly proud to be contributing yourself in terms of enhancing the value of your profession through your students? The school offers a safe and friendly environment. The premise I treasure most is that the institute really practices values of inclusion and it also celebrates diversity. The Institute of Community Services puts the student at the heart of all we do. What are your feelings about the constant state of flux in the beauty industry? As a matter of fact, the beauty industry reflects what is going on in all industries. We are living a life of constant change and the beauty industry is a reflection of what clients need in order to feel better and in order for them to be supported throughout the hectic lifestyle that we are all living.

Are our hard-working readers keeping themselves up to date in a sufficient manner? Work-life balance is one of the issues that everyone has to deal with. Choices sometimes involve the letting go of things in life which are important to us. Readers are not immune to what is going on in the world around them as life is becoming more demanding and they would have to work longer hours. Would you be kind enough to give us some personal insight into the differences between being a therapist or hairdresser say in the 80s or 90s and now? The media and the internet have accelerated our life. Fashion, research around it and therapies are becoming more diverse and the amount of knowledge required is becoming more demanding.


Are our today's clients more educated and demanding? Clients are more educated via the media even through the amount of teleshopping and telemarketing in our local media. Moreover, clients have access to the purchase of certain products in supermarkets and over the internet. Any tips to how to stay ahead of the game? The tip is to find magazines with short articles or to access the internet. Basically one has to embark into infotainment thus finding time to bridge time for entertainment with keeping up with the development of the area. What is the school offering to professionals who have been successfully running their own salons for a while already? The Institute offers a number of parttime courses in the evenings. These courses consist of a number of hours and are certified by MCAST. Is the continued education available in Malta comparable to international training opportunities? The education we offer is of good standard and this is always remarked upon by our External Examiners. Since

we are in a small Island with limited resources, we cannot cater for so many specializations so we tend to offer courses which give a good background and which make our students employable. Either way, would you still recommend that readers pursue specialised training abroad, and perhaps even compete in international competitions? International competitions are always a must because I feel that living in an island makes us somewhat insular. Competing abroad makes our readers believe in themselves. Last year we had a student who in fact got a good placing in a Wella Competition.

Finally, which, in your opinion are the hottest emerging trends and treatments which our readers should prepare to educate themselves upon, and which our clients will be desperate to have? The hottest emerging trend... you would expect me to talk about a fad or a style! No here I would say that getting a good education and getting yourself certified is of utmost importance for the future!
