Scar tissue is characterised by poor circulation, loss of pigmentation and hardening of tissue. Typically, scar tissue is recognised as a lighter, shiny patch on the skin. It is important to distinguish between hard and soft stretchmarks. Hard stretch-marks are characterised by thick tissue that often form an interwoven pattern. Soft stretch-marks often appear as a dimple covered by a thin wrinkled skin. It looks as if the dermis has been torn and a small dimple has formed under the skin.

what is reflexology? What is a reflexology chart?

A reflexology chart mirrors a reflection of the body on the feet and hands. In reflexology practice, technique is applied to the relevant reflex area(s) to prompt a change in the related part of the body, for instance the kidney reflex areas, the intestine reflex areas and the brain reflex area.

What is the history of reflexology?

Around the world and throughout history, reflexology has been rediscovered time and time again. Archaeological evidence points to ancient reflexology medical practices in Egypt (2330 BCE), China (2704 BCE) and Japan (690 CE). In the West, the concept of reflexology began to emerge in the 19th century with European and Russian research into the nervous system and reflex- think Pavlov. Reflex therapies were created as medical practices but were soon eclipsed by use of surgery and drugs. The ideas of use for health improvement were carried on sporadically and brought to America in 1909 by Dr. William Fitzgerald, an eye-ear and nose specialist from Connecticut. Physiotherapist Eunice Ingham is credited with developing a system of reflex areas by 1938. In the East, ancient Chinese techniques were re-discovered in the 1880s and have spread throughout Asia creating today's reflexology-rich environment with reflexology paths in parks and a thriving reflexology industry. Reflexology is a complement to standard medical care. It should not be construed as medical advice. It should not be a replacement to medical help.

What are the benefits of reflexology?

A survey of 170 reflexology studies from 21 countries shows that reflexology is effective, impacting a variety of physical and psychological concerns.

In addition, reflexology showed a positive impact on postpartum depression, anxiety, urination and bowel movements. In general the benefits of reflexology have to do with the reduction of stress. Because the feet and hands help set the tension level for the rest of the body, they are an easy way to interrupt the stress signal and reset homeostasis, the body's equilibrium.

I’ve been working with Neoderma, Repechage and Nail Magic since 2006 and Arosha from the very start when it had been introduced in Malta. Being a Beauty Therapist does not only involve doing treatments but it also includes bonding with the client and knowing their concerns. The client comes to you for facials, waxing, electrolysis, massages together with other holistic treatments. It is very important to discuss the clients expectations, and the treatment's as well as your limitations to make sure you meet the client’s needs in order for the client to be happy. When a customer is satisfied you feel gratified as well. Sometimes certain issues are not easy to handle and that is when referral comes in. Knowing when to refer your client to a doctor is very important. This will give you a different edge with the client and they will trust you even more. Doctors believe in your work and you know that the client can benefit a lot from your treatments. If a client who comes for waxing is complaining about ingrown hairs which they are experiencing you are in a good position to recommend laser hair removal which is the best cure for ingrown hairs. On this edition's 'take two' we are featuring two recently graduated therapists who had a special interest in the art of make-up while studying. Let's see what they ve been up to since they were knighted into the magnificent world of beautifying the country!

JustBeauty: Tell us something fabulous about yourself!

Marian Baker: Well... I’m a mobile Beauty Therapist, which some people may consider fabulous :) I travel all over the island, providing virtually all the services one might expect to find in a salon, with few exceptions, to anyone who prefers to have their beautician come to them! My clients vary from the elite business women (and men) to the mummy and home maker who values every second of her free time. They all love the saved time a mobile service provides, having them at unconventional hours like 10pm sometimes, and the added comfort of having their treatments done at home.

When did you graduate from MCAST ICS?

I graduated 4 years ago.

Be honest now :) what was your favourite module and who was your favourite Tutor?

To be honest we had two fantastic Beauty Therapy teachers and a few other tutors teaching Art & Design, Nutrition, Biology and English and Communications and a couple of others, each having their own special ways of teaching and a sense of humour! I have to say I tried their patience almost to the max and we had our fair share of ups and downs. Other than the actual beauty therapy work, I really enjoyed the module of Diet and Nutrition. Regarding a favourite teacher I really can’t pick one, they are all nuts and great simultaneously, and I know they’ll agree :)

Charlene Camilleri Lets talk Make up! Give us an account of the best lesson you learnt from your makeup instruction. Something I’ve always kept with me through various Make up lessons is how important setting your make up is, while also applying a good base. In Malta we’re often the victims of sticky humidity and scorching heat, which can really test your make up’s staying power. Personally, my eyeshadow wouldn’t have a hope of hanging on all day while looking decent if I don’t apply a base to my eyelids.

What are you doing now?

As previously mentioned I’m a self employed mobile Beautician with my own website. www.beautifyme.info

How important was what you learnt from ICS with regards to the needs of your daily practice? The course at MCAST was very intense, and lasted 2 years and believe me it truly was full-time with lectures all day, everyday, where a lot was learned not only academically but also practically. I consider what I learnt there to the best form of Beauty Therapy training available on the island. We had clients for a whole day once a week in the second year who would come for appointments at the school, and another full day at the salon we were allocated to for practice and observation. Something this taught me was the importance of suffering in silence and being as cheerful as possible, knowing that this is their time to relax, talk freely, vent (if needed) and most of all be pampered. If my back is aching from the strain of my work I’m never going to mention it during a treatment, or if I’m upset about something in my personal life I avoid mentioning it too. The aim of the game is to help them enjoy their

Lets talk Make up! Give us an account of the best lesson you learnt from your make-up instruction

I think the best lesson about make up was how to highlight the best features of the face and how to diminish imperfections in different individuals.

What are you doing now?

I’m working in a beauty Salon in Fgura as a beauty Therapist.

How important was what you learnt from ICS with regards to the needs of your daily practice?

It was very important because in ICS I learnt everything which is necessary for this job. Apart from beauty work other subjects were also very important in daily practice like communication

treatment, even the painful ones to a certain extent, and importantly to encourage them to do it again after all. This, on top of all the practice and training we got from doing treatments a trillion million times on each other was invaluable to my training, and I walked out of there having made plenty of mistakes but having had the opportunity to learn from them before having to put my name on the line, along with some fantastic guidance from our teachers - you know who you are!:) I really feel that these 1 year, part time evening courses with 2 lessons a week cannot even compare to the kind of training and experience we attained at Mcast. I was very lucky to get in for that matter too!

Do you intend to take up further, specialised training in Makeup? And if you have already done so, tell us about this.

I’ve always intended to, but I haven’t came across one that really called out to me yet. I’ve learned tons from my clients over time, and I’m constantly experimenting with every style I can imagine, unleashing my creative side, mostly on myself though unless a photo shoot calls for something funky. The Internet, and particularly YouTube, has been awesome in providing me with brilliant tips and ideas and I very much encourage everyone who loves

skills, health and safety, business, anatomy and physiology and diet and nutrition.

Do you intend to take up further, specialised training in Make-up? And if you have already done so, tell us about this? Yes I intend to undergo Advanced make up training in the near Future.

What is your favourite ever moment since you started working? When I did occasional make up on a client who was not used to wearing make up and she was really pleased with the end result.

What is your favourite ever moment since you started working?

Hmmmm.... In this line of work, where you deal directly with the client, there is an enormous amount of satisfaction that one gets out of it, and their feedback is often instant, unlike in numerous other jobs where one might never even see a client/ customer. For beauticians, every time someone is happy with a massage and their aches and pains have gone away, they express their happiness directly to you, and every time it makes my chest swell with pride and makes me give my best with every treatment. Just the look on some one’s face when I’ve just finished their nails, or make up, gives me a massive kick, which I have to say keeps me enthusiastic about working in this industry and makes up a million times over for the not-so-fun experiences. Sorry to disappoint, but I’ve racked my brains for a specific moment but I can’t decide on one, those in the business will know what I mean.

"I have trust in cosmetic products"

Kanzah Beaute has for some months been collaborating with the Institut Ora. Natalia Ribe for aesthetic medicine, nutrition and andrology in the Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona which offers the leading techniques in these fields. The director, Dr. Natalia Ribe, is an Andrologist, Master in Cosmetic Medicine and Ageing, with Diplomas in various other fields such as Laser Surgery, Dermopharmacy and Dermocosmetics, Clinical Bases in Cosmetic Medicine and Surgery, Anti-ageing Medicine, as well as Nutrition, Obesity and Clinical Dietetics.

Just Beauty interviewed Dr. Natalia Ribe to hear more about the treatments in her centre and her opinion of the role played by cosmeceuticals as an indispensable part of medicalaesthetic treatments. Just Beauty Which are the treatments that are given most in your centre? Dr. Ribe An important question and difficult at the same time. For me it is important to individualise the treatments. That is to say, the process of ageing is inevitable, but what we can do is slow it down.

First we apply diagnostic treatments to the skin, to see what condition it is in. If the skin is dry, dehydrated, because with the passing of the years we all lose hyaluronic acid and collagen, we shall need revitalisation treatments. If the skin shows a loss of structure, and shows signs of flaccidity, we shall recommend treatments for induction of collagen. If a patient has a particular area of loss, whether in the area of the nasolabial fold, or she wants to redefine her lips because little wrinkles have appeared around them, we shall do filling treatments. When the expression wrinkles become visible, on the forehead, between the eyebrows, or crows feet, in areas where the skin suffers more, clearly these are areas which will require treatments to relax these wrinkles. Just Beauty Although recently this trend is changing, it is not very normal for doctors to prescribe cosmeceuticals to supplement their treatments. In

contrast, you have said on several occasions that cosmetics have their function. Could you explain your views on this? Dr. Ribe Creams have their function and also have their limitations. My patients ask me 'do I use the cream or not?' Yes, it is important to apply the cream, but the right cream suited to the area which we have treated and which will enable us to make the result last longer and so the skin maintains its good condition, is well moisturized and cared for.

Therefore, yes, it is true that I have trust in cosmetic products, and I also understand their limitations. When I read in the news 'a collagen restoring cream' or a 'cream with a lifting effect', I sincerely believe that we are being deceived. To achieve a lifting effect or for filling we must use an injected product, so that it gives us a specific volume. To treat flaccidity we have to use collagen inducting treatments. But once we have restored the density of the dermis, we have put the skin into its most optimum state, yes, then in order to extend the results the cream or serum will do its job.

Also it is true that what you can achieve with a needle you cannot do with a cream. The needle goes through the epidermis and deposits the substance, the food, in the deeper part of the dermis. The cream remains at the level of the epidermis, the more superficial layers. But today we have some very interesting creams on the market, not only at facial level but also for the body, and creams which are individualized for areas, because the skin around the eyes or on the decollete is different from the skin of the rest of tile body, and this is why it is important to adapt the creams or serums to the area that we are treating. Just Beauty What would you recommend to a person who wants to look well? Dr. Ribe I always tell my patients that to look well is the best investment that one can make in oneself. You improve your self-esteem, you find yourself at ease with yourself, you gain confidence, you can relate with more security.

Just Beauty Do you consider that we now have good cosmetics to treat the skin? Dr. Ribe The industry is pressing for the emergence of new products with interesting compounds. We are speaking of products which contain vitamin C, which are antioxidants, products on the basis of hyaluronic acid, collagen, proteoglycans, etc. When I hear it said that a cream does miracles, then no, it is not true. But when they say 'don't do anything' that's no good either. A cream does its work but it has a limitation.

Once you understand the 3C’s, being Cool, Calm and Confident beauty will step in. Love yourself and be beautiful for yourself and the rest of the world will love you as you are. Learn to appreciate your own beauty. When a woman embraces her imperfections, they can become her greatest strength. They will empower her character and spirit. Presently, it is the day by day discoveries that inspire me, what is happening and the organic things I come across. My body ornaments are more about techniques that need to be mastered and the aesthetic beauty in designs. What I find interesting in my works is that they are playful in the way you can present your self differently.
