just a few words from our

editor

w w w. j us t b eau t yma g a z i n e .c o m

When I search for inspiration for my editorial note I always start by thinking about the weather, which I suppose is a very British thing to do... The thing is the main reason for which I love living in Malta is the weather! And oh what an awful couple of months it has been... For once, I am truly feeling the bliss the northerners feel when they think of the blooming flowers in the Spring... We have been hibernating this year... Our skins are as white and sallow as ever, our hair follicles are lifeless and lack lustre... And we are looking like Rip Van Wrinkle having not trimmed our hair for months thinking it would help keep us warm!!! Our fingernails are chipped and ripped apart with chilblains and all the efforts we have made to keep them from aching. Our clients are desperate... They are all screaming for help to burst out of their pupas and metamorphosize once more into the butterflies they long to be! This here is going to be the makeover season of makeover seasons. And do we here at Just Beauty have news for you! This is our best issue ever! With a bit of a re-vamp and a new sub-editor, the wonderful Michelle, who I cannot live without... We want to make you jump for joy with news of new products, and shine with new treatments to offer and why not even dance a little! Really... Well, if you don’t find any inspiration on these pages... Errrm you need spectacles!

COMPETITION

Foot Heaven

Spoil your feet courtesy of The Fish Lounge, St. Julian’s They are sprouting all over the place and have generated a lot of gossip and caused a lot of speculation... But fish spas are here to stay!! The Fish Lounge at St Julian’s invited us for a taster session of all-natural foot exfoliation courtesy of les fishes. The lovely Carla from Madrid, a Vet by profession greets us and introduced us to the 1000 or so fish residents of the squeaky clean Perspex tanks. If only they could apply nail polish they would make all of our great nail techs make a run for their money! But, before we get intimidated by our inch long friends, we should think of recommending this innovative treatment to our clients in between pedicures! One of two species of fish namely Garra rufa and Cyprinion macrostomus are usually bred for this purpose. The fish are like comb fishes in that they only consume dead areas of the skin, leaving the healthy skin to grow. This means that clients leave the spa with baby soft skin on their feet, which is hard to achieve with conventional exfoliation methods. The Fish Spa is not a new idea. The most famous is the Kangal Spa in Turkey which has been in operation since the early 1900's. There is historical evidence to suggest similar spas have been in use much longer. Fish spas gained their popularity with Psoriasis sufferers and others with eczema type disease. Treatment is very simple. After careful analyses and exclusion of cuts and open sores, and a cleansing wash, the client immerses his or her feet in with the fish. The fish will then feed gently upon the loose skin removing it in a ticklish manner. Depending on the number of fish working on the feet, treatment can be over in less than half an hour!

march 2012 | issue 9

It has been discovered that some of the fish apparently secrete an enzyme which has been shown to be beneficial to human skin. In fact further work is being done in laboratories worldwide looking into producing a topical application of this substance.

Win a FREE Fish Spa Treatment!

We have no choice but to recommend this blissful treatment!

Make-up with your

clients!

Why you should start selling make-up in your Beauty Salon!

A full range of make-up & Nail products ideal for small salons

10

march 2012 | issue 9

Compact range with an elegant design at a very cost effective price. The Classics Range includes foundation as fluid, mousse or powder > Blushers > Eyeshadows, mascara & eyeliners > Waterproof eyeliner & lip liner > A vast range of lipsticks & lip gloss > Professional nail lacquers, metallic & french manicure

Clients walk into our salons wanting to enhance their beauty, as well as feel special and more attractive. What easier way for a person to enhance their beauty if not with even the slightest application of make-up? Selling make-up at your salon will help you offer clients a more complete portfolio.

Make-up is there to hide flaws and make us look more attractive and that is exactly what clients come to us for. One might have the impression that selling make-up will result in clients not purchasing the other products which we offer. However this is not right! The products which we offer will help to heal their flaws and other concerns over a period of time, whilst make-up will offer the client a more immediate solution to their problems. This will make the client realise that even though you are helping them with their concerns you are also helping them look better.

On the other hand we can also use our product range to cross sell our treatments. If a client wishes to purchase a make-up product in order to cover up her flaw and expresses her concern, you can recommend a treatment which you offer that might help her fix the problem. Therefore make-up can act as a tool to promote your services. In order to boost your selling potential some things should be taken into consideration. First and foremost choose a cost-efficient, but quality brand which will provide you with a an attractive tester stand in your waiting area. Make sure that all testers are checked, clean and full every morning. The stand will be a great attraction and clients will be able to look at all the products while they are waiting and it will also give them the opportunity to feel their texture and stimulate their curiosity to know more about the product.

Make-Up & Nails

Using the same product on yourself will not only increase your own trust in the product but will also convince the clients furthermore. You can be a great canvas for your make-up range, and when clients complement your make-up you will be able to promote the product. You will actually be a walking advert for the brand. A good tip might be that if you are a group working together, applying the same colour of lipstick will attract your clients' attention and they will surely ask questions! Finally, the take home lesson is: when a client walks out feeling truly beautiful she will most definitely respect you more and return again and again! Apply make-up on your clients and sell them the same make-up! You will not regret it!

MICROPITTURA

Micro-pittura is an advanced technique of expressing Nail Art designs in the most detailed way. With a combination of acrylic based paints and tools such as detail brushes, micro-pittura is just amazingly fun! Mixing the product onto a palette and combining colours together allows nail technicians to create stunning designs. Shading of the colours and the blending of colours together make the designs stand out, leaving the client feeling proud of her hands. Micro-pittura designs, unlike any other preprinted designs found on the market today, attract customers who want their own design, their unique nail art, and a personal touch. Micro-pittura helps the nail enthusiast to stand out of the nail market with different skills and abilities to the clients’ satisfaction. Micro-pittura intense courses are held at NSI Nail Academy, Attard. Courses are available, both mornings and evenings. Morning courses

are being held over three days, starting from 9am till 2pm. Evening courses are held over four evenings from 4pm till 8pm. NSI guarantees classes of not more than six students. (NOTE: For best results, polish and design one nail at a time). 3.

Tan-mania Promoting tanning sessions at your salon is not the easiest thing to do since we live in a country where we almost have 365 days of sunshine. That is why as beauty therapists one needs to target the right clients in order to ensure recurring treatments. The first clients who may come to mind are the ones who are scared of sun damage. Nowadays, there is more awareness of sun damage and people are resorting to sunless tanning. Secondly there are clients who do not wish to go to the beach for the first time with pale skin and therefore book an appointment right before their first swim. Then there are those clients who wish to have a perfect sun tan, without tan lines before an important occasion like one's wedding or their honeymoon. Unfortunately most of these clients tend to be one timers.

You might not realize that there are entire groups of people who can become regular tanning clients! One such sub-cultures includes latin and ballroom dancers. As most competitive ballroom dancers know, it is important to look the part on the dance floor. These days, that means going beyond costumes, hair and make-up. With bright lights, the dance floor is a lot like a stage. It can also reveal all your flaws. A tan can provide contour and disguise unevenness. For all the reasons above, dancers turn to "fake tanning".

20

march 2012 | issue 9

In Malta there are around five main dancing schools and plenty of amateur groups which teach this art to so many students from juveniles to seniors. They can definitely be your target clientele. The Malta Dance Sport Association organises two big competitions yearly. However many competitors choose to travel in Europe and take their chance competing with other professionals in Blackpool as well as Sicily and other countries and this increases their experience. Nowadays a lot of foreigners are visiting Malta in order to compete with our dancers as well. Promotion of this sport is always available both on a national and international level with programmes like Show biz, Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing with the stars and Ballando con le stelle, and it seems that a whole new generation of dancers are being inspired by these programmes.

Join us on sienna-x malta for our latest offers and products.

Beauty

This new found craze to dance your breath away, will increase the demand for salons which offer a healthy fake tanning service! At Just Beauty we met up with a mother and daughter champion dancing duo who would not be caught dead without a fake tan! How long have you been dancing?

Claire Busuttil: I have been dancing ballroom and Latin with my husband for the last 12 years. Rebecca Busuttil: I have been dancing for 14 years.

Do you apply tanning for every show and competition? CB: Yes, tanning is a must before a show or competition for both men and women. RB: I agree... It is very important especially before a competition

Why do you need a tan before a show?

CB: Tanning the body for a show is crucial mostly because it is important that when wearing a costume which ever part of the body is uncovered must be the same colour and this is only obtained by tanning. In Latin American dancing especially, the costumes are more revealing and so the colour of the skin plays an important role in the image of the couple and a good tan gives the skin a shimmering glow which looks wonderful while dancing. Tanning becomes even more important in winter especially when the summer tan has completely vanished and the skin looks very pale and white. RB: The competitor's look is one of the most important characteristics in order to impress the judges in a competition. Tanning is very useful since Latin American dancing is meant to be sultry and a lot of our body is showing, and Latino dancers usually have a golden tan to say the least! Our body has to be quite tanned so as to shine!!

Have you ever used self tanning lotions?

CB: Yes i have always used self tanning lotions especially throughout the last six years when we have been dancing in the A class competitions and also competing abroad, where tanning is definitely a must and all dancers are very well tanned. RB: Yes, I used to apply self tanning lotion a lot before I found an instant spray tan on the market. Sometimes i still start my tanning process by putting on lotion a week before and then use a spray on the last three days before the competition.

Why do you prefer professional spray tanning to tanning lotions?

CB: Well spray tanning is definitely longer lasting and very comfortable to apply as you just stand in a cubicle and let someone else do the job for you. Tanning with lotions on the other hand is

a much longer process where you have to first scrub yourself and wash before starting. The tan will start to show gradually and after a week of applying the lotion and waiting for it to dry (which takes ages) the tan will appear. Another disadvantage of lotion is that sometimes a red (carrot-like) colour appears on the skin which does not have an attractive look. Some instant tans are also available, however they are not long lasting and wear off instantly which with dancers is not convenient as you would have to apply it every time you are dancing. They also make a mess on your clothes which professionally applied spray tans do not. RB: I much prefer spray tanning for the same reasons and also since it is not sticky as most tanning lotions are. Spray tanning gives you the opportunity to choose the best colour for you, since it goes from light to darker shades. There is also no need to wait for it to dry for hours without clothes and without moving and doesn’t leave any orange patches but it evens out much more and gives a shimmering glow to the skin. I love the fact that they don’t smell bad at all, everything smells of fruit and coconuts! Overnight Repair Serum The importance of a good night’s rest can never be understated, as it affects many parts of the body, even the skin. In fact the several hours spent in sleep each night are a time of dynamic, system-wide repair and healing. This medical fact inspired Dermalogica’s newest treatment-product for mature skin, Overnight Repair Serum, designed to firm the skin and restore its capacity to maintain suppleness and moisture. Protecting, maintaining and stimulating collagen in the skin are the primary benefits of Overnight Repair Serum, accomplished in multiple ways. Argan Oil shields the lipid barrier, and also inhibits the

production of enzymes which break down collagen, and thus the underlying structure of skin tissue. Brown seaweed in the formula fights free radicals which erode collagen resiliency. The skin-supportive effects of Overnight Repair Serum may benefit broken capillaries, as well as restoring the integrity of skin experiencing age-related collagen loss. This formulation incorporates the soothing aromas of botanical oils like Jasmine, Rose, Ylang-Ylang, Geranium, Rosemary, Cinnamon and Neroli, while providing the consumer with the active ingredients they are looking for to help address the signs of ageing. Formulated for application to freshly cleansed skin before retiring for the night, Overnight Repair Serum delivers stimulating peptide action and anti-ageing benefits in a soothing, aromatherapeutic base of botanical oils. This fusion-formulation allows the active peptide, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38, to accelerate production of collagen and Hyaluronic Acid without irritating the skin. For more information contact

GATINEAU SKIN ANALYSER

GATINEAU’s NEW TOOL TO LURE MORE CLIENTS TO YOUR SALON

What does it measure? How does it work? Pr o be M ea su re m en ts 1. HYDRATION

2. FIRMNESS

Skin hydration is evaluated by applying a micro constant sinusoidal current, which allows measuring skin impedance. The lower the impedance, the more current flows easily into the tissues. It undergoes a low attenuation and indicates that the hydration is good.

Skin firmness is analysed by using a probe that sucks the skin through a cavity which is calibrated by 5 mm diameter with a constant depression.

The higher the impedance, the more the current is reduced: This indicates poor hydration of the skin.

24

march 2012 | issue 9

The hydration measurement is represented on a variation scale from 0% to 100%.

The depression is applied by a pump that aspires for 2 seconds; the distance is then measured between the skin and a reference determined by a proximity sensor located inside the probe. The pump stops and the system measures the time it takes for the skin to regain its initial state, this parameter, associated with the obtained deformation, allows us to determine the skin firmness. Firmness is represented as a percentage on a scale from 0% to 100%.

Beauty

PICTURE M ea su re m en ts 1. SEBUM

4. WRINKLES

Sebum is measured by taking a picture of the face with a light shining up the areas with an excess of sebum. Seborrhoeic areas are detected by image processing. The area represented by the pixels (in green on the picture processed) is reduced to a sebum scale of 0% to 100%.

In order to perform wrinkles analysis, the user must choose three areas on the face so that the device can perform a calculation on the cropped areas in high-definition pictures. In this way, image processing works on the shadow and calculates a rate of roughness. The study areas are forehead wrinkles, wrinkles under the eyes and the nasogenian fold.

2. COMPLEXION Complexion is determined by the gradients of colours obtained on a picture of the face with a slightly saturated light. Image processing allows transforming the colour palette of the face (which normally includes tens of thousands of colours) into twelve colours. A “Very Uniform” complexion is one which uses one or two colours of the palette for the areas of interest (outside the mouth, eyes, nose, hair..). A “Uniform” complexion is one which uses three or four colours of the palette for the areas of interest. An “Irregular” complexion uses four or five colours. A “Very Irregular” complexion uses more than five colours. Indeed, image processing is able to analyse the colours but it also calculates the surfaces in pixels generated by each colour area before giving a percentage score of complexion from 0% to 100%.

3. SPOTS & BLOTCHES The spots are detected on areas of interest of the face. It is calculated after applying different filters realizing an increase in image contrast and colours representing the wavelengths returned by melanin (brown +/- red). This image processing allows highlighting not only the visible pigmented areas but also the emerging small imperfections caused mainly by the aging of the skin. The number of spots is recorded, it is reduced to a surface level by report to concerned areas and we can deduct a percentage of “presence of spots” from 0% to 100%.

On the forehead: Focus on the most really visible wrinkles. Under the eye: Focus in the axis of the pupil. On the nasogenian fold: Thanks to this calculation, it is possible to calculate a parameter ranging from 0% to 100% on each chosen face area, representing an average depth of wrinkles.

5. PORES To perform the pores analysis, the user must choose an area on the face so that the device can perform a calculation on the cropped area in high-definition. In this way, the magnification is sufficient and the analysis program can detect pores. Each pore diameter is measured; the program calculates the average of all the pore diameters displayed on the area.

SUE ROSSI the

eternal

modelling beauty Try as we may, we are unable to guess her age... Strong yet flexible, vintage yet cutting edge, Modelle International founder Sue Rossi walks around with an aura of timeless elegant beauty, and has inspired too many aspiring models to mention. Bowed over by our curiosity, we have asked the cat walk queen to give us some juicy details about her life! Read on and learn! “Recollections of my early childhood bring to mind feeble attempts to walk tall on my mother’s heels adorned with a make shift couture dress. The spectacle encouraged me to take up sewing earnestly during my primary school days at Immaculate Conception School, Tarxien. These were followed by a term of years at Maria Assumpta, Hamrun where I reached an ordinary level standard of education. Work opportunity as a part-time sales girl with a textile shop in Valletta was a stepping stone for my long standing career. There, I had the greatest privilege to meet one of the top designers and artists of the time, the young and brilliant Ray Ashley: a true friend who gave a personal touch to my outfits. Through his persistent encouragement I seriously pondered on taking up modelling and eventually signed up with an agency run by Anne Borg. The organiser kept a keen eye on promising students and lent me a hand in several fashion shows of renowned outlets during the eventful eighties. Photo shoots provided another attractive activity that lured me toward the world of entertainment and art.

march 2012 | issue 9

A scholarship at the prestigious Model Nouveau School, Nottingham paved the way for an exciting international experience. In the United Kingdom, I followed modelling lessons and instructor courses which proved to be quite intense and challenging. I recall being very appreciative of the outcome especially on obtaining successful distinction results for the examinations held there.

Beauty

On my return to Malta, I witnessed the realisation of another dream by opening my own Modelling agency. After a relatively short time back home, an assignment with an international magazine, PIC (People in Camera) meant more than front page covers and ushered in a hectic period of travelling to exotic venues like Jamaica, and beyond. At that time I also managed without hesitation to coordinate with international photo models on a regular basis. Meanwhile, the newly founded agency in Malta was prospering and holding courses for a multitude of local students coming from all walks of life. The time was ripe for the fruition of my first competition in the 80’s under the title of Miss Maltese Beauty. Such was the success that its popularity kept on growing annually for the past twenty-five years. Collections for the season made by Ray Ashley were the order of the day during such shows, and attractive clothes with unique designs added enough spice to engulf inspiration and serenity. Apart from the yearly appointment, promotions for various clients as well as provision of hostesses for conferences were in great demand in the business circles. Students were prepared thoroughly for the exercise and the agency became renowned instantly for its wide network of well groomed personalities and excellent provision of services to clients.

Sue, during one of her photo shoots in the late 80’s

My beloved daughter Valentina came to be during my involvement in an international show by the world class Valentino, thus explaining the choice of name given in 1994 to my daughter. Giving birth, seeing to rehearsals and keeping my fingers crossed for all to go well were I must say the most unforgettable experiences, which made life worth living. Soon after, the agency was awarded the license for Miss World by Miss World Jersey Ltd and was thus in a position to organise the events which fall under the title of Miss Maltese Islands, later referred to as Miss World Malta. Assisting promising contestants for participation in the Miss World event is truly satisfying and requires tough decisions. Retaining high standards is daunting but imperative for the global event. With much on my mind, my second child`s birth coincided with the demise of an ever supportive mother whose zeal and foresight gave me endless strength and inspiration.. A State Registered Nurse who qualified and worked at Noble s Hospital Isle of Man, my mother was a beacon of hope and fortitude. Her memory and the continuous backing of a kind father transmit a veritable sense of courage and uncompromising determination. As time went by, both siblings grew quite independently and responsible in their day to day encounters. In fact Valentina is working part time with the agency while Dean is at MCAST following a demanding course. Looking back twenty five years on, I feel deeply honoured and grateful for all the accomplishments which have the stamp of various characters. Ray Ashley, my parents and numerous others contributed in one way or another in an adventure that goes beyond organisation and success. Human relationships, compassion and a genuine understanding of those who walked on my path were the quintessential reasons and ingredients for the fruition of several projects. I thank God for all the blessings and congratulate my competitors whilst extending my appreciation to the models, media, local designers, photographers, and sponsors on the local as well as on the international scene”.

SAVE OUR SKIN!

WITH Renuva Treatments Winter is almost over, and our clients are looking forward to hot Sunny days. However, their skin is not the most radiant it can be. After all the extremes of weather conditions we’ve had, our clients’ skin is dull, dehydrated, lifeless and devitalized. They need you to recommend the best programME ever in order to boost their skin’s appearance. In fact this is the best time to promote skin renewal treatments. This is the time of year where your client’s regular facials should take a different turn. Offering a specific treatment where the skin is given a boost, hydrated, given radiance should be what your target marketing is all about at this time. We are totally aware that improving one’s skin doesn’t happen over night. Depending on your client’s skin condition one should tailor-make treatments. It is of fundamental importance that you explain to your clients the importance of improving the texture of their skin. The softer and more supple their skin is the less likely they will age prematurely. This does not only involve taking care of one’s skin condition at home, but requires giving that extra boost with professional treatments. As a beauty

therapist one might be scared to try out new exfoliation treatments, which are harsher than the usual exfoliating products however, Renuva treatments offer the opportunity to provide a more intensive treatment with good results in a safe way. The Renuva treatment gives us the opportunity to have the treatment in individual kits; therefore one should not worry about using more than is needed. Another great advantage is that our clients will not experience aggressive reactions, redness will subside quickly, and therefore they can go back to their usual routine in no time. This treatment also incorporates a massage after the exfoliation treatment.

This will:> Balance and redistribute water in the skin, and model the platismal muscle > Firm and tighten the skin with new protective nutrients > Improve the appearance of the skin by removing dead skin cells , deeper penetration of cosmetic substances, improves in an indirect way the production of collagen > Restore the tension and turgor of the skin, improving aging factors > Promote and enhance exchanges between micro circulation thus renewing the skin.

As a beauty therapist besides thinking of how to satisfy your clients during the treatment you perform you also have to think about promoting new treatments as a marketing strategy. Always evaluate what is best to promote at the right time of year, and you will truly act as the saviour of your clients’ skins.

the world of Fashion & Beauty Modelle International Celebrates 25 years in the Business Success is measured in many ways and an impeccable reputation and a mean 25 years on the forefront of the industry are certainly measures to be reckoned with. Just Beauty met up with the inimitable Sue Rossi who takes a look back at her company’s achievements and gives us insight into the future of Modelle International. “I like meeting people everyday. Life is full of challenges which keep me going and make me stronger.” Sue looks back at the past 25 years with courage to move forward. Some encouragement derives from the fact that past models who have started a family, trust the agency enough to enrol their children in the academy. Other veteran models have become TV presenters whilst others still ventured into modelling assignments overseas.

34

march 2012 | issue 9

“I must say I was a lucky young lady when I started my career as a model. I travelled and met overseas models who had already made a good name for themselves and thought me a lot about the industry... I achieved relatively remarkable success for a Maltese and some of my work was featured on international magazines such as PIC (People in Camera).”

A Successful Journey IN

“Our beauty pageants in the past few years have given our female and male models the opportunity to compete abroad for the title of Miss World & Mr World. We consider the sector a huge success for us.” Over the years Sue has noticed that cultural habits have changed and that due to this, more and more youngsters have became aware of the importance of being well groomed. With this change the agency is receiving interest from more and more beautiful models making it more difficult each time for judges to select a winner. Such changes have also encouraged others to start their own modelling agencies. Ms Rossi adds that she finds such competition healthy as there is plenty of room for growth. It is impossible to mention everybody who forms part of one of Malta’s leading modelling agencies as various dedicated members lend their professionalism to the company. Ms Rossi takes this opportunity to publicly thank them and her family for their support and devotion. Modelle International also extends an invitation for a 25th anniversary celebration party on Saturday 24th March. Invites can be obtained from the Modelle International agency.

The wealth of contacts and experience achieved over her time as both a cat walk and photo model has contributed greatly to the tools and opportunities the agency is able to offer its members.

Hair

Let’s talk hair colour

Lakmécollage+ In the hairysphere, one of the most frequent treatments performed is hair colouring. It is not always easy to envision what your clients want exactly although through experience you should learn how to target and please your clients in giving them the result they are expecting. Some clients might not be ready to experiment with colour, others might want to cover the white and grey hairs which start sprouting as we age but then there are others who want you to make them over and create something spectacular! As a hair specialist you should be in a position to recommend and offer your clients the best treatment possible. Having a product which delivers what it promises will give you more confidence when performing the treatment. One of the colours which is highly fashionable at the moment, especially if one where to follow celebrities is red hair with a warm intensity and radiance. Clients might find it a disadvantage to use red dye since it washes away quicker than other colours and it rapidly loses intensity. What is of fundamental importance is to be in a position to offer your clients a good quality hair dye. Lakmé New Collage+ products promise to deliver high quality colour intensity which lasts. The intensity of the colour is due to its active ingredient: Sunflohair Complex which is extracted from sunflower oil. The composition of the phospholipids in the Sunflohair Complex gives the product great penetration. Their affinity with the hair allows them to reach the core of the hair fibre. The Lakmé colouring concept is designed and developed with High Density Colour Technology. This essentially means that the target tone can be achieved with less natural base mixture when formulating for 50% or more grey coverage.

Clients want their reds and coppers to be intense. The incorporation of Pyrzol makes it possible to achieve the perfect shade with maximum performance. Another advantage of Collage+ is the antioxidant effect of the Sunflohair Complex which neutralizes free radicals allowing the colour to maintain optimal shine with superior protection and longevity. This is extremely important considering how hair dyes are particularly sensitive to external aggression, such as sunlight, sea water, chlorine etc. Another common client’s concern which as a hair dresser one has to take into consideration, is the client’s hair condition. Clients are scared that colouring their hair will damage it. With Lakmé Collage+ you can assure your clients that this dye will actually protect the hair! This is achieved with the help of the lipids in the Sunflohair Complex. These will penetrate the cortex and restore the cellular lipid matrix forming a protective film that improves the appearance of the hair, repairing the surface and softening the cuticle scales. Therefore you can rest assured that your client’s hair will not become dull, porous, and difficult to comb.

Last but not least with Lakmé Collage+ you will be offering your client a PPD free range. PPD, which stands for paraphenylenediamine is an allergen meaning it can cause allergic reactions. Having a PPD free product makes your treatment safer.

Best Breast Forward

text by: Dr. Nadine Delicata Head of the National Breast Screening Programme

The National Breast Screening Programme In our circles, talking about breasts usually involves issues like firming treatments, implants and push-up bras. In this issue we decided to take a closer look at another aspect of breasts, and that is keeping them healthy!

38

march 2012 | issue 9

The National Breast Screening Programme was launched in October 2009. It is one of the pillars of the National Cancer Plan and is part of government’s initiatives to combat the morbidity and mortality associated with breast cancer. The main objective of the Programme is to provide an effective screening service of the highest quality possible, in order to find and be able to cure as many breast cancers as possible at the earliest possible stage. The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the prognosis and chances of survival. The screening service is targeted at healthy symptom-free women and is located at the National Screening Centre at 17, Lascaris Wharf, Valletta. The Centre was purposely designed with screening clients in mind, is fully accessible and provides a welcoming, non-clinical ambience.

The National Breast Screening Programme currently provides breast screening every three years for all women residing in the Maltese Islands aged 50 to 59. It works on the basis of a personal invitation which the woman receives at home. Women are invited to come for a mammogram at the Lascaris Centre. If follow-up is required further tests will be carried out, also at the Lascaris Centre. More than 26,000 women have been invited so far; out of these around 100 cancers have been diagnosed at an early stage when the cancer was too small to cause any symptoms. The National Breast Screening Programme follows European quality standards. The Programme aims to protect the dignity and privacy of women, while delivering a high quality screening service which is free of charge at the point of delivery. It is also committed to promote breast health and to help women in participating and taking care of their own health. Screening is for healthy women. Women who notice any changes or have any queries regarding their breast health must consult their family

doctor immediately. If you receive an invitation in the post with a breast screening appointment, do accept it and come for your mammogram. It could save your life!

Hair

Great lengths

The edge your salon has been craving... The secret for success for a hair salon is to be a cut above the rest and stand out by offering a service which is unique and of excellent quality. Very few hair salons in Malta offer the dream of giving their clients long, beautiful hair almost instantaneously. Clients are also tired of receiving fake hair extensions which after a few washes start to look dull and brittle with resultant matting and discomfort. Allow us then to recommend a product which will not only boost your income, but which will also turn your clients into extension-addicts!

Why Choose Great Lengths? Great Lengths uses 100% natural human hair exclusively from Indian Temple Hair: (Fact). It is 100% ethical and 100% traceable hair and only utilises ‘Remy’ hair meaning that the cuticle layers are all facing the same direction from root to end and therefore they not tangle. They blend in superbly and are easy to maintain.

100% Natural Hair Extensions

Great Lengths hair to your own hair. Glue bonding, knotting or welding can lead to a vicious cycle resulting in ever increasing hair loss! The quality of the hair is unmatched, and Great Lengths has been used on many celebrities including Cheryl Cole, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Aniston and many more.

From a stylists’ standpoint, the Great Lengths’ method of bonding is unique: no other system treats hair in a gentler way because Great Lengths has put an end to gluing, knotting and welding. The modulation technique used here is revolutionary; an extremely durable yet gentle Keratin bonding, which is very similar to that of human hair attaches Great Lengths can be used for lengthening, voluming, highlighting or zonal volume application. The vast palette offers over 40 vibrant natural shades to precisely match the colour of your own hair. Strands are available in lengths from 8 to 30 inches. Trade Enquiries: CC&J Ltd. How to be a hair doctor! We borrowed some advice from the Kitoko Experts to improve our skills and truly offer our clients the supreme hair-stylist service! No matter what our client’s style is, whether it’s short, long, curly or straight all our clients dream of having healthy and shiny hair. As a hair specialist, you should be able to diagnose the condition of the client’s hair. In this way you will be in a better position to recommend to your client a more tailored treatment together with homecare advice.

42

march 2012 | issue 9

Diagnosing the condition of the hair and scalp depends on what you see visually, what the hair actually feels like when touched and the answers to the questions you ask. In addition, ‘elasticity’ and ‘porosity tests can be carried out as a further indication of the hair’s condition. This is usually done during the consultation which is an integral part of any professional in-salon treatment. It is during this personal, one-to-one time with the client that a hair stylist finds out exactly what the client wants. Ideally, the consultation and diagnosis should take place at the styling station at the beginning of the client’s appointment. It should include analysis of their unwashed hair and scalp, assessment of the client’s needs and also address any concerns.

Hair

Here are some guidelines and tests which will make this process easier:

The Porosity Test

The Visibility & Touch test

A porosity test will determine whether there is any damage to the cuticle layer of the hair. If this layer is damaged, the inner layers of the hair may become damaged therefore it is vital to ensure the cuticle remains in optimum condition.

Here are some questions which you should ask yourself:

> > > >

How does the client’s hair look?

>

Has the client’s hair been permed, coloured, bleached, or straightened?

What does the client’s hair feel like? What is the condition of the client’s scalp? Is there any evidence of over-processing, breakage or split-ends?

The Elasticity or Stretch Test An elasticity test determines the condition of the hair. If the elasticity is poor, the internal links and bonds in the cortex may have been damaged and the hair may not be able to withstand a chemical service, so it is important to improve the elasticity of the hair.

Test: Take a small section of dry hair and run

your fingers from the ends of the hair to the roots. You will be able to feel whether the cuticle is raised or damaged, an indication of porous hair. If the hair feels smooth the cuticle is flat and the hair is in good condition.

By knowing the correct questions to ask during the consultation, you will be able to assess the correct in-salon treatment regime to use and make recommendation for the after-care products that your client need to maintain fantastical healthy, glossy hair. These are but a glimpse of what you should do at the beginning of a stylist-client relationship, which as we in the industry know very well, is the key to a successful career in the beauty industry! So, analyse your clients condition well, and keep up to date with your knowledge, and you will only benefit!

Test: To see how strong the hair is

internally and test how springy it is, take a wet hair and stretch it between fingers and thumb release it to see if it return to normal. The hair should stretch slightly and then return to its original length. If the hair stretches and does not return, or even breaks, this means the hair is in poor condition and one must thread carefully before deciding to do any harsh treatments.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

A WAY TO HEALTH, FITNESS AND BEAUTY Physical activity is a way of life. It provides us with the ingredients of better living in all aspects. Sport is a vehicle which opens horizons for better standards of healthy living both in body and mind.

Brenda Borg

TEXT BY: Malta Football Association - footballgirls@mfa.com.mt

The antithesis of athleticism is a sedentary life where all the health benefits are conspicuous by their absence. Mental staleness takes over and obesity creeps in, with attendant psychological and physical problems. The solution is an active life which pre-supposes a disposition to exercise the body regularly within routine physical chores, enabling it to keep in trim.

44

march 2012 | issue 9

Competition through sport does the trick since it makes for streamlined fitness levels within the context of enjoyment. Character formation also comes into the frame whatever the sport is. Males and females are in the mix without any distinction as different sports disciplines are increasingly becoming the domain of both sexes. Football is a prime example. The game has literally mushroomed as far as the female sector is concerned. More and more women are becoming aware that football, apart from being an artistic way of expressing collective and individual skills, is a medium through which the fairer sex can enhance their

physique. Indeed, football helps women to keep fit, healthy and attractive.

Kathleen Saliba, one of Malta’s women footballers, epitomises the feelings of many of her football colleagues in that beauty and appearance are intrinsically connected with the game they practise.

The female body line, including torso and legs, skin and nail care, grooming of hair, eyes and other facial features are not anathema to the rigours of football. Women can definitely boost their physical charm by indulging in a sport that not very long ago was exclusively practised by males. That stigma has now been obliterated. Beauty and football can go together.

‘‘I groom myself through make-up everyday since I have to wear a suit or dress for work. Appearance is very important for me. Time between work and training is very short and so I don’t remove my make-up. Even if it’s a big hassle trying to keep my hair neat and tidy after a training session or a match I always make it a point keep my hair well-groomed. Thankfully I know how to do a blow and dry, never mind not having the time for a weekly visit to the hairdresser.’’ Her

Streamlining the body to attain desired slimness levels through proper training and dietary programmes is part and parcel of adequate build-ups of women engaged in football. This preparation not only eliminates flabbiness but also rejuvenates the body. Beauty is enhanced once the right balance is struck between muscular development and suppleness. Dieticians, beauticians, massage parlours et al can take a backseat if this grooming is properly done.

love for football while taking care of her femininity is expressed emphatically. ‘I love and adore being feminine, but when I get

into football it is just a big attitude transformation, obviously not in appearance. Matching my football shoes with the kit, including hair bands, is a case in point,’ Kathleen remarked. The bonus is satisfaction derived from pleasure in taking part in a sport which has caught the imagination of many females but at the same time helping them maintain their charm and sex appeal. Malta can take pride in the fact that organised football for women has come a long way since two decades ago. National football leagues are organised by the women’s section of the Malta Football Association, Maltese representative teams of various categories are taking part in international competitions, while the base is being built around young girls in schools. Women in our country have become aware that football is also a way of life and that participation in this sport boosts their attractiveness immensely. It is a fact that beauty through fitness and sport can go hand in hand. Football is in the forefront in this respect.
