SAFE
HAIR
A Safe Professional ensures a long successful career, and a better reputation! The hands are the most important tools that a hairdresser has. It is usually taken for granted that the hands simply “work properly”, but in your daily routine the hands are exposed to many skin-damaging materials such as hair colouring agents, shampoo and water.
Did you know that...
*
regular contact with water, shampoo, and hair colouring agents harms your skin and can even lead to occupational skin diseases, if the skin is not protected
*
dry or scaly skin are already early warning signals
*
many hairdressers develop an occupational skin disease on their hands as early as their training period
*
some hairdressers must even give up their profession as a result of this skin disease
*
the development of occupational skin problems can be avoided with a few simple skin protection measures
Which occupational skin diseases are there?
Occupational skin diseases are almost always a form of dermatitis. Dermatitis is inflammation of the epidermis and upper cutis, which can have different causes. Dermatitis can appear suddenly through brief contact with a corrosive substance, such as, through contact with hydrogen peroxide. This is known as “acute-toxic contact dermatitis“. Substances which can cause an acute-toxic contact dermatitis must be clearly marked. Dermatitis can result from frequent or repeated contact with skin-irritating substances (“cumulative-subtoxic contact dermatitis“ or “degenerative eczemas“). Dermatitis can be allergy-related (“allergic contact dermatitis“ or ACD). That means that the body has learned to react to a certain substance (allergen) with an inflammation of the skin.
Skin protection Protective creams There are many different protective skin creams for various skin problems in the workplace. As a hair stylist you are most often subject to water, moisture and long periods of wearing gloves. That means you should make sure the protective skin cream can protect you from water, and thus from the danger of allowing your skin barrier to be weakened. A protective skin cream should be applied at least 20 minutes before putting on gloves or before skin contact with professional products, in order to avoid possible negative interactions between the cream and the glove material or professional products. Unfortunately, protective skin creams cannot protect you from hairdressing chemicals such as hair colouring agents, perming agents and others. Only appropriate protective gloves can help against those.
Protective gloves Protective gloves represent the most important skin protection technique in your profession. Only protective gloves can completely protect you from skinendangering materials. However, the protective gloves can only offer this protection when you have the appropriate gloves for the potentially harmful activity. That means: all gloves are not equal! There are many different types and materials.
Single-use gloves Single-use gloves are very thin. They feel good when you have them on. They are available in many different colours – including fashionable ones! – and with different cuff lengths. For typical hairdressing activities such as hair washing, colouring, bleaching, rinsing, straightening and perming, they are well suited.
When wearing gloves you should follow these tips: The right fit and size are important!
Do not wear watertight gloves for long periods without interruption! Only wear single-use gloves once! Do not wear jewelry on your hands! When doing cleansing work roll the glove cuffs down!
Cleaning the skin In cleaning the skin this general rule applies: “As little as possible, as much as necessary”. That means that the hands must not be cleaned with skin cleaning agents unless they are dirty or stained. For example, cleaning the hands after wearing gloves is not absolutely necessary. When you use skin cleaning agents or buy them for private use, you will get a “skinfriendly” product if you pay attention to the following: The pH value should be pH-neutral (about 5.5) in order not to overtax the acid skin mantle. The product should be free of artificial colour, perfumes and preservatives, as these substances can provoke an allergic reaction. The product should be free of solvents and abrasives. Lukewarm water should be used to clean the skin. After cleaning, the hands should be carefully dabbed dry with the softest disposable paper tissue available. In no case should you reuse customer towels, as residue of, for example, hair colouring agents or shampoo may be found on them, which can harm the skin and even produce allergies. Vigorous rubbing leads to abrasion of the outer cornified layer and can thus increase the damage to the skin barrier. Protecting the hands while working and wearing gloves is thus important, because you need healthy and attractive hands every day! MARCH 2013 | issue 13

FIGHTING HAIR LOSS
BIODROGA MD HAIR FORCE INNOVATION WITH THE INGREDIENT
PEPTIDE STPL II
For use with hair loss not caused by disease. Alopecia is frequently caused by a disturbance of the natural regeneration potential of stem cells in the area of the hair follicle by metabolic, endocrine and immunological changes. Healthy hair grows on average 1cm per month. Over many years, structure, quality and fullness of hair change. This is the reason why it also takes its time to make hair grow again under the influence of suitable stimulants.
EFFICIENCY IN THE CASE OF ALOPECIA PEPTIDE STPL II - AN INGREDIENT FROM RESEARCH STPL II – a synthetic low-molecular tetra peptide library copied from nature from plant amino acids shows a high efficiency and safety in the treatment of androgenetic hair loss, telogen effluvium (diffuse hair loss) and other forms of thinning hair. STPL II act as signal peptides and improve the natural body functions of hair and skin. This peptide library consists of approx. 1600 different peptides (mostly tetrapeptides) which, due to their small molecular size, reach down to the hair follicle where they are able to pointedly develop their protecting and hair-growth stimulating effect. The ingredient STPL II normalizes the processes responsible for hair loss at the hair follicles and vitalizes their physiological function. The relation of anagen and telogen hair in the hair-growth cycle is shifted to the benefit of the anagen phase. The result: Hair loss is countered, new hair growth is stimulated and hair quality and the functions of the scalp are significantly improved.
Women showed an even higher efficiency than men. Corinne Farrugia is principal and tutor at Beauty Tech Hair Beauty Academy and has 33 years experience in hair-loss treatments. You may contact Corinne on 9949 5309 for a free consultation or advice on hair and scalp problems.
15
In several controlled scientific application tests and studies of German and international dermatological university clinics the superior effect of the peptide library STPL II against hair loss was clearly demonstrated.
MARCH 2013 | issue 13
Good to know: If the area affected is completely bald and if the hair follicle is dead, hair can no longer grow.

Working with UV Gels
Troubleshooting guide Nowadays the UV gel system has become the most popular method used in nail styling. Despite the many advantages of this method some nail technicians, especially those that are at the early stages of their career, face problematic situations. Let’s investigate further what are the most common difficulties of this system and how to overcome them.
Top gel looks cloudy AND dull:
On the market we can find two types of finishing UV gels: The most common one is the gel with a sticky residue after curing and the other type is the more innovative finishing UV gel that is non-wiping (no sticky residue after curing). Shine gel with sticky residue: The gel becomes matt after curing due to inappropriate application of the product. In this situation the amount of applied gel is very important. When UV gel is exposed to UV light, a shrinking process will commence. Therefore if an insufficient amount of gel is applied, the structure will start breaking and roundish matt spots may be visible all over the nails. The only solution to this, is to file the nails again and re-apply shine gel, this time paying attention to the amount applied. Shine gel without sticky residue: When using this type of gel we usually see fantastic results as soon as we take out the hand from the UV lamp. However,
we can lose the shine if we touch the nails before the gel “cools down”. It is important to allow the gel to set for about 1 min after curing before we apply cuticle oil or hand cream.
Cracks on the shine gel:
The cracking of the shine gel in most cases apply to non-wiping gels. This is due to their structure which is harder than that of gels with sticky residue. To avoid this problem the gel should be applied in a thin layer, ensuring a perfect coverage of the whole nail. Application of a thin layer will also eliminate the risk of the gel “running” over the skin.
Uncured Gel with high saturation of pigment:
We might encounter a situation when after the required curing time uncured gel appears from under the gel surface when the nail is pressed. This may happen mainly with gels that have a high content of pigment such as cover gels or white gels. In these types of gels the pigment can reflect and block the UV rays and therefore deeper layers of gel may remain uncured. To eliminate this problem it is best to apply such gels in few thinner layers (each layer cured as required by the manufacturer) rather than in a one thick layer. Here we must also ensure that our UV lamp and bulbs are in a good working condition. We should keep in mind that the required curing time advised by the manufacturer (in majority of cases) is specified for a 36 watt UV lamp.
Karolina Dreliszak Aquilina Silcare International Trainer ITEC Nail Technology Specialist
Air bubbles appear, trapped within the gel:
This problem is very common with novice nail technicians. The air bubbles within the gel can be created when applying the product or during mixing of the gel in the jar. If the gel requires to be stirred, it should be done with gentle moves in one direction. It is advisable to stir the gel well before using it, since air bubbles can remain in the gel for quite some time. To avoid air bubbles when applying the gel always remember to use light strokes. The tip of the brush should only be in contact with the gel and not with the nail. Overworking of the gel during application should always be avoided. The above are just some pitfalls that a nail technician may encounter while working on gels. As in all other professions, practice makes perfect but we should keep in mind that being a nail technician is an ongoing learning process of discovering new methods and enhancing knowledge. Staying idle and applying the “I know it all” approach, will only lead to lagging behind the competition. My advice to every nail tech: Keep practicing, keep learning, and keep doing great nails.

C tting TEXT BY MICHELLE DEGIORGIO, just beauty magazine
Having an edge in a salon business is very important due to all the competition around! Dry Hair Cutting can be yours! There are various advantages to dry hair cutting done by AN experienced stylist, namely that it can give you a better result when compared to a wet cut. It is unfortunate that few stylists have mastered this technique so far. This technique allows the stylist to be able to handle textures of hair that intimidate them like, wavy, curly and ethnic hair types. In these cases a dry hair cut can be superior to a wet one. To begin with, hair that is saturated with water makes it impossible for the stylist to see the curl pattern due to the weight that water gives to the curl. If a stylist does not follow the curl pattern, this may result in styling problems. Having unruly and a hard to manage style is what clients do not want. Every single client wants a low maintenance style which looks fantastic at all times! Cutting hair dry is not a new concept. Many hairstylists over the years have used variations of dry haircutting techniques. The late John Sahag is generally considered to be the pioneer in the the dry-cut technique. Sahag, who advocated the shift to dry cutting in the late 1970s, believed that when the hair is cut dry, it creates a natural shape
Austin stylist Georgia Bramhall of Pink Salon cuts all of her curly clients’ hair dry. “It shows me their real hair and what it naturally wants to do,” Bramhall says. “When it’s wet, it totally changes into something different. If it’s wet, it’s practically straight.” Scottsdale, Ariz., stylist Victor Sabino always starts off his curly cuts on dry hair to get a basic shape. Then he shampoos it and cleans it up when it’s wet. “Then I dry it and finish up the cut from there,” Sabino says. Different stylists, different philosophies about whether curls should be cut wet or dry. It’s no wonder curlies are confused. Curl experts all are passionate about their techniques, whether they cut the hair wet, dry, wet into dry, dry into wet, or some other variation on the theme.

according to the way the hair grows, enabling the stylist to remove bulk and weight to create movement and dimension. Wet hair, he believed, did not allow for natural inconsistencies. Performing a cut on dry hair will allow the stylist and client to see shape of cut and how it looks when styled, while with a wet hair cut it feels like the hair shrunk after drying it. One has to admit that when a stylist performs a dry hair cut, scissors will dull much faster; in fact some say that you murder your beloved scissors this way. Having a shear sharpening scissors of good quality will hold their edge much longer. Another disadvantage which stylists experience could be that it is much harder to see the guide line of the cut. However, the trick is to take smaller sections and a perfect result is possible. Education is of fundamental importance, and knowing a new technique can make your work more unique and give you back that passion that sometimes is lost in our hectic professionals. Passion will differentiate you from any other hair stylists because, at the end of the day, clients feel it. It might be a bit hard to introduce a new styling technique, but if you are confident then clients will trust you and what is of most importance is that, when they opt for it, they become hooked!
“Unless a stylist can see how much spring there is in your curls, he won’t understand your hair and he’s likely to cut too much when it’s wet, only to discover that fact after your hair dries,” stylist Lorraine Massey writes in her book “Curly Girl.” Rosie Da Silva of Devachan Salon likes to cut her client’s hair curl by curl. “I can’t do that with dry hair,” Da Silva says. “You have to feel the texture. When you cut curly hair wet, you’re not really seeing how it’s going to look.” New York stylist Jose Valdez has been cutting hair dry for the past 15 years. He believes it enables him to sculpt the hair, chiseling away to create shapes with dimension and balance. “Why not cut hair dry?” Valdez says. “You do, after all, wear your hair dry. Cutting the hair dry lets me see exactly how your hair will fall as you’re wearing it. I can create perfect angles that not only accentuate your best features, but that suit your personality as well.”
Dustin David of the Dustin David Salon in Los Gatos, Calif., takes a customized approach to his clients. For clients with tight curls, he cuts it dry, shampoos and styles it and then cuts it again. For clients with looser, wavier curls who wear their hair both curly and straight, he irons it straight and cuts it flat ironed. If the curls are looser and the client always wears her hair curly, David cuts it wet. “To me, each person is an individual,” David says. “No matter how similar their hair seems, the cut needs to be customized to take into account their texture, density, length and lifestyle.”
All stylists stressed the importance of having the client come in with their hair dry and styled so they get a realistic look at the the curl pattern.

Please Colour ME!
E_CO.LOR.GY is a permanent multifunctional colour which allows perfect colour salon results. Oxidative permanent colours hold a base of different coloured pigments, chosen according to the desired nuances. A 4-D synergy colour performance‌
ZERO PPD E_co.lor.gy formula does NOT contain PPD (PARAPHENYLENDIAMINE) but innovative coloured pigments which, properly joined together, replaced PPD avoiding allergies.
ZERO AMMONIA E_co.lor.gy is NOT alkalinized with AMMONIA. This produces a perfumed cosmetic colour, able to create a balanced saturation and oxidation of colour pigments inside the hair. These pigments are contained inside a base carrier. When diluted with the exact amount of developer it procures an emulsion easy to be applied and diffused on the hair: important operation for a perfect final result.
5 RED FRUITS For the treatment of the hair and for the E_co.lor.gy formula, five red fruit extracts have been well selected: STRAWBERRY, RASPBERRY, POMEGRANATE, CHERRY, BLUEBERRY. Vegetable extracts are natural substances and sources of health, wellness and beauty.
STRAWBERRY is a natural antioxidant capable of neutralizing free radicals. Based on 90% water it contains particular enzymes able to activate the metabolism of fats and favour cellular exchange.
RASPBERRY is a good source of mineral salts such as Potassium, Phosphorous, Iron, Magnesium, Sodium, Zinc, Manganese, Copper and Calcium and Vitamins such as A, B1, B2, B3, B5, C, E, K AND J. Excellent tonics and natural strengtheners.
POMEGRANATE like strawberry has a great antioxidant action as well as an antibacterial effect.
CHERRY is rich in protein and sugars, and presents a great mix of organic acids important for the acid-based balance of the body. It therefore plays a revitalizing action.
BLUEBERRY is rich in anthocyanins and polyphenols which will play a delicate and soothing action on skin subject to redness.
5 NATURAL ELEMENTS
5 ESSENTIAL OILS
CASHMERE, essentially composed
JOJOBA, RICE, COCONUT AND ALMONDS in synergism
of KERATIN, plays a revitalizing action by making the structure of the hair strong and healthy. Enriched with VITAMIN E and PANTHENOL, it makes hair soft and shiny.
FLAX SEEDS contain significant percentages of OMEGA 3 fatty acids that have significant antioxidant properties. The PROTEINS, LIPIDS, LINOLEIC ACID, FIBERS and LIGNANS have especially emollient properties which give the hair shine and softness. BEESWAX, a natural thickener, is essential for detangling, and adds softness to the hair. SOY is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids that improve the elasticity of the skin and hair.
SILK contains 2 important PROTEINS: FIBROIN and SERICIN. The special property of these proteins is to create a protective barrier, fixing the hair keratin, which due to its molecular conformation, also plays a highly hydrating, anti-aging and soothing action. The hair appears smoother and more silky.
5 FORMULATION BENEFITS 1. The naturalness: After the colourant action the hair is compact
We offer special incentive packages
The ESSENTIAL OILS OF CALENDULA,
between them have a very important role in the formulation of E_co.lor.gy. They keep the support base perfectly emulsified - the exact value of the HLB (Hydrolipid film Balance): an essential factor to facilitate and diffuse the intermediate hair colourants within the hair. This mechanism of action results in making the hair evenly coloured with a perfect reflection from regrowth to tips.
MARIGOLD OIL with its softening and shielding action, protects the scalp during setting time. The unsaturated ACIDS and ALKALIS of JOJOBA OIL on the hair acts as protection against UV rays. The ARGININE in RICE, a naturally occurring amino acid similar to hair keratin, restores the balance disturbed by the oxidation of the hair colouring.
COCONUT OIL gives fullness to the hair.
CARBOHYDRATES, PROTEINS and MINERALS, contained in ALMOND oil have emollient, softening, soothing and nourishing properties capable of regenerating dull and brittle hair.
and soft to the touch, like natural hair. 2. The lasting action of the colour on the structure of the hair even after several washings. 3. The stability of the colour remains unchanged with no undesirable colour changes. 4. The chromatic uniformity of the colour from regrowth to tips obtained after colour treatment lets the hair remain bright and silky. 5. The perfect reflections. Stinging Nettle Plant
A Natural non-chemical
Alternative for Men & Women Hair Care System designed for
fuller, thicker hair
9 months later
Millions of men and women are concerned with thinning hair, hair loss, and fine, limp hair. Modern medicine responded with chemical treatments causing more unpleasant side effects rather than finding a cure. Farouk Systems has dedicated many years of research and development to create a natural alternative that could promote healthier, fuller, thicker hair. While working with several natural herbs, we came across Stinging Nettle (Urtica Dioica) and discovered many beneficial properties. For thousands of years, the stem and leaves of the Nettle plant have been used medicinally. This plant contains a large amount of chlorophyll, vitamins A, B2, C, E and K, folic acid, histamine, acetylchlorline, formic acid, acetic acid, butyric acid, serotonin, 5-hydroxytrypaine, and abundant minerals like iron, potassium, manganese and sulfur. Nettle also has purifying properties and acts as an astringent. The CHI44 Ionic Power Plus system of Shampoos, Conditioner and Supplements formula contains many herbs including Nettle, Yucca, Marigold, Sage, Rosemary, Chamomile, Comfrey, Burdock, Yarrow, Thyme and many others to help nourish the scalp.
CHI速 ceramic, ionic and far infrared elements include Oxygen (O), Calcium (Ca), Aluminum (Al), Silicon (Si), Chromium (Cr), Titanium (Ti), Iron (Fe), Phosphorus (P), Manganese (Mn), Lanthanum (La), Potassium (K), Cerium(Ce), Magnesium (Mg), Boron (B) and Vanadium (V).

THE LIFE CYCLE & ACTIVITY OF HAIR Research shows that virtually all hair follicles undergo a life cycle. A growing stage exists, known as Anagen, in which a hair is produced, alternating with a resting period known as Catagen, in which the fully formed hair remains secured in the follicle by its expanded base and the outer cap lies free of the inner shaft. Between the Anagen cycle and the Catagen cycle there is a relatively short falling stage, known as Telogen, in which the newly formed hair moves toward the skin surface.
The conditioner provides stimulation and neutralizes any sebum that is produced by the sebaceous gland and that may clog the follicle. The final step is the supplement that delivers the proper nourishment with nettle and other essential herbs, vitamins and botanicals to the follicle. Thus, ensuring that the shaft becomes reconstituted and new hair forms and grows.
The follicle becomes active again at the end of Telogen cycle, and starts the Anagen cycle and becomes active. Not every follicle continues the cycle and it becomes important at this point, that when the follicle is active, CHI44 Ionic Power Plus system becomes a daily regimen. The shampoo assists in exfoliating the scalp, cleansing the hair and balancing the sebaceous glands.

Unbreak my hair! JOICO launches a new technology JOICO is marking a monumental moment in hair science with DNAbased breakthroughs. We know that hair is like a DNA chain, and damaged hair is a result of missing links that broke off or fell away. But what if we could restore the missing links to achieve gorgeous hair like never before? That would be monumental…and, for JOICO, it is.
JOICO cracked the code JOICO has found the missing links in damaged hair, and perfectly engineered DNA-based science into a new ingredient that will be featured in its entire collection of hair care products. With this innovative scientific development, the research and development team at JOICO has opened a new door to discover technology that will change hair formulations and the industry forever. Scientific breakthrough: Bio-Advanced Peptide Complex™ The power of DNA science and the latest advancements in bio-mimicry together unveil the patent-pending Bio-Advanced Peptide Complex™, the most powerful, targeted hair repair technology ever created. “By mimicking the exact peptide chain needed to optimally repair and protect hair, Bio-Advanced Peptide Complex™ goes above and beyond any limit – not only repairing the exact sites of damage, but also preventing future damage by creating a molecular shield of protection
around the hair’s structure”, explains Rushi Tasker, Director of Research & Development, USA. “As a result hair will feel dramatically stronger, and looking healthier and shinier – even after just one use”. As of February, 2013, JOICO BioAdvanced Peptide Complex™ will be featured in all JOICO shampoos, conditioners, treatments, stylers and finishers, alongside the already celebrated JOICO technologies such as the Multi-Spectrum Complex™ in Colour Endure, the Oat Protein Complex™ in Body Luxe, the KeraShield Complex™ in Smooth Cure, the Hydramine Sea Complex™ in Moisture Recovery and the Hair Protection System™ in KPak.
New Power styling products featuring AquaLastik™ Next to the monumental step for the new key technology in all JOICO products, there is also the new AquaLastik™– a durable, humidityproof technology, which allows hair to be restyled for up to 72 hours after application. This new technology can be found in the new Power Stylers, part of the JOICO Styling & Finishing category, the JOICO Power Whip™, JOICO Power Spray™ Fast-Dry Finishing Spray and JOICO Power Gel™ Sculpting Gel.

All funds raised from ticket sales or revenue in the form of donations from the charity events are entirely donated to underprivileged children. All this year’s participants will be involved in taking part in this event on Saturday 27th April at the Hilton Conference Centre which will be transmitted live on TV. Running a salon often becomes second nature but sometimes, just when you think you've become an expert you start missing the skill to give attention to detail, and your focus shifts in a way that service levels suffer. Here are some tips to make sure that you are in control of your salon and if not, then maybe it is time to takeover your salon once again!
1
Knowing your clientele is key when it comes to managing a salon. It is only in this way that you can give them what they want and what they expect from you.
2
Take control of your staff. Staff should not dictate how the salon should be run but it is you that should make sure there is an appropriate conduct and the most important thing is to lead by example. Cont. pg 39

Set a welcoming atmosphere for your clients. Make sure everywhere is clean, products are properly displayed and there is no clutter running around. Clients come to you to relax and enjoy the whole experience.
4
Wearing black in the case of a hair stylist or white in the case of a therapist will set a neutral surrounding. In this way it is the client who becomes the center of attention and they feel they can shine.
5
Offering a variety of services can help you improve your sales and will give you a broader portfolio. However make sure that the quality of service is great in every aspect of what you offer.
6
Listen to your customers. Give your clients time to express themselves and pay attention to their body language and facial expression. Not all clients are good with words to express what they would be thinking, so give yourself the chance to learn more about your clients from other signs.
7
Receptionists are as important as the stylist or therapist. Welcoming clients, and offering beverages is the minimum your receptionist should do. If you do not have a receptionist, then make sure your clients are taken care of. Acknowledging that a client came in through the door is very important, even if you are answering a phone call during that time.

Treating all your clients as stars will lead you in the best direction for great customer service. There are so many different points one should be careful about, sometimes one looses track of them. However if you feel your motivation and passion are missing, then it is up to you to turn the tables. A few small changes can make the salon’s atmosphere a different one, creating a more positive energy and a nicer environment for you and your staff to work in.
