The new officers, along with our former president and advisor, Evelyn Ferguson, have been working diligently to plan for a successful Gala and 2017 Calendar of Events. Robert and Dhiane Lumbres were our emissaries to the Philippines in 2015. It was a Christmas mission in the town of Saguday, Quirino province in the main island of Luzon. The mission was coordinated with the Department of Social Welfare where 150 indigent families were invited to Dhiane’s ancestral home. Each family received groceries which included a sack of rice, sardines, noodles, salt, sugar, canned goods, and baby formula for families with babies. We thank Fil-Am Sangbayan for their financial contribution and Dhiane’s parents, Greg and Dolly Gomez, for their help in coordinating the mission. It was a very special Christmas because 150 families were helped. Sadly, it was our last Christmas with Dhiane’s father, Greg Gomez. - Robert & Dhiane Lumbres
PAYPAY DE MANILA—(Manila Folding Fan Dance) is a dance of Spanish influence. It displays young ladies with scented fans (paypay) flirting with young men. The dance is a mixture of slow habanera alternated with a fast polka. (Dancers: Marie Brandenburg, Malou Stephenson, Daisy Ong, and Cora Kretzchmar)
KURATSA—depicts the courtship between a young lady and a flirtatious man. It mimics the courtship between a rooster and a hen. It is a favorite dance in the Visayas region of the Philippines. (Dancers: Lucila Chambers and Agnes Roach)
