[NOT] EASY TO BE MANY? EINDELIJK WEER SAMEN IN HET DONKER KAAITHEATER heeft vertrouwen en waagt de sprong. Binnenkort, aan het einde van de zomer, openen we weer de zaaldeuren voor de start van een nieuw seizoen. Het voelt een beetje als een mantra, of als een bezwering. Een spreuk om alles af te weren wat deze heropening in de weg zou kunnen staan. Het grootste deel van het afgelopen seizoen werkten we immers onder de radar — zoals zo veel theaters en kunstencentra. In het donker bleven we eindeloos paraat staan. Om eindelijk weer open te gaan. Want dit gaat over voorbereiding. Podiumkunsten gaan over voorbereiding. Over weken en maanden doorwerken aan iets dat nog geen vorm heeft. Een beetje zoals het prepareren van een maaltijd, of het voorbereiden van een revolutie, een project, een plan op de tekentafel. Tijdens deze voorbereiding kwamen veel vragen naar boven. Hoe kunnen we leren onze deuren open te houden? Hoe kunnen we met veel zijn in de stad? In de samenleving? In het theater? We ontdekten hoe uitdagend het kan zijn om ruimte te delen. Er is geen eenvoudig recept voor de maaltijd die we aan het koken zijn, geen handleiding voor de veranderingen die we in gang willen zetten. Wat we wel vonden was een pad, en mensen om een eind mee te wandelen op dat pad, en zo van hen te leren.

Dit zijn de Brusselse organisaties en collectieven die dit pad met ons bewandelden: CITYLAB, MOPHRADAT, FOR ALL QUEENS!, WIPCOOP, MOTHERS&DAUGHTERS & MOUSSEM. Tijdens onze wandelingen vroegen we hen: wat missen we vandaag, op deze podia? In deze stad? Hun antwoorden vind je terug in dit programma. We zijn zeer dankbaar voor hun openheid, en bereidheid om met ons de handen in elkaar te slaan. Er is meer. Binnen de thematische programmalijn WE HEAR YOU(TH), geven ANT HAMPTON, ANNA RISPOLI, FRANSESCA GRILLI, KYOKO SCHOLIERS, LARA STAAL, en MOHAMMED EL KHATIB het woord aan jonge mensen, om zo de weg naar de toekomst te plaveien. Op de affiche van het nieuwe stadsfestival {SOUS LES PAVÉS, HET STRAND} staan DE SOCIALE COALITIE, PERMANENT, TOOLS FOR ACTION en de schrijvers van PANORAMA RING RING. Denkers en makers gaan op zoek naar een ander Brussel, onder de straatstenen en het beton van de al maar veranderende Brusselse noordwijk. Met VUB/CROSSTALKS werken we verder rond de vraag hoe we op aarde kunnen samenleven met andere soorten en de natuur. Leren om met veel te zijn — HOW TO BE MANY?, het motto dat we vorig jaar introduceerden — is een proces. Onderweg naar verandering komen we onszelf tegen, onze routines, onze (machts)rollen, onze positionering. Inderdaad, het is niet eenvoudig om met veel te zijn. Vooral in tijden waarin onzekerheid een constante blijft, en er over één van de twee zetels op de tribune een schaduw blijft hangen. Nu de twijfel zich een weg heeft gebaand naar het hart van ons werk en tot in onze portemonnee.

Daarom besloten we de regels om te gooien, enkele conventies te herschrijven en op een nieuwe manier te leren wat structurele solidariteit kan zijn. Daarom experimenteerde KAAITHEATER in de weken voor de zomer met een {PAY WHAT YOU CAN}-policy, om zo plaats te maken voor meer mensen. Over het vervolg van dit experiment… hoor je binnenkort meer. Met veel zijn is niet eenvoudig. Maar het is uitdagend, opwindend, en vooral heel erg nodig.

[NOT] EASY TO BE MANY? ENFIN ENSEMBLE DANS LE NOIR Le KAAITHEATER pose un acte de foi : bientôt, à la fin de l’été, nous rouvrirons nos portes pour le début d’une nouvelle saison. C’est comme un mantra, une incantation. Un sortilège pour conjurer tout ce qui pourrait barrer la route à cette réouverture. À l’image de nombreux théâtres et centres d’art, nous avons travaillé à l’abri des regards pendant la plus grande partie de la saison dernière. Et dans l’obscurité, nous n’avons jamais cessé d’être prêt·es. Pour enfin ouvrir à nouveau. Car il s’agit de préparation. Les arts de la scène sont affaire de préparation. Travailler jour et nuit, des semaines et des mois durant pour faire éclore ce qui n’est pas encore advenu. Comme la préparation d’un repas, d’une révolution, de quelque chose que l’on projette, que l’on trame. De multiples questions ont émergé au fil de cette préparation. Comment apprendre à garder nos portes ouvertes ? Comment être nombreux·euses dans la ville, dans la société ou dans un théâtre ? Nous avons découvert qu’il n’est guère aisé d’être nombreux·euses. Il n’y a pas de recette facile pour le repas que nous voulons concocter, ni de mode d’emploi pour les changements que nous voulons susciter. Ce que nous avons trouvé, c’est un chemin et des gens avec qui l’arpenter et apprendre.

Ce n’est pas tout. Dans le cadre du programme thématique WE HEAR YOU(TH), ANT HAMPTON, ANNA RISPOLI, FRANSESCA GRILLI, KYOKO SCHOLIERS, LARA STAAL et MOHAMMED EL KHATIB donnent la parole à des jeunes, fort·es de leur conviction que les écouter est la seule voie vers l’avenir. Et à l’occasion du nouveau festival urbain {SOUS LES PAVÉS, HET STRAND}, DE SOCIALE COALITIE, PERMANENT, TOOLS FOR ACTION et les auteurs de PANORAMA RING RING auscultent la ville en mutation qui nous entoure, à l’affût d’une autre Bruxelles qui surgirait de sous le béton du quartier Nord. Avec VUB/CROSSTALKS, nous continuons à mener une réflexion en profondeur sur les modalités d’une cohabitation harmonieuse avec les autres espèces et la nature. Apprendre à être nombreux·euses — « HOW TO BE MANY? », la question que nous avons introduit l’année dernière — est un processus. Le chemin du changement est parsemé de notions bien ancrées sur les structures de pouvoir, les positions et les routines. [NOT] EASY TO BE MANY? TOGETHER IN THE DARK AT LAST KAAITHEATER is taking a leap of faith: soon, at the end of summer, we will re-open our doors for the start of a new season. It is like a mantra, an incantation. A spell to ward off anything that would come in the way. Most of last season, like many theatres and art centres, we have been working in the background and, hidden away, we have been endlessly ready finally to open again. Because this is about preparation. Performing arts are about preparation. About working days and nights for weeks and months to give shape to something that does not yet exist. Like preparing for a meal, a revolution, for something you are projecting, you are plotting. Many questions emerged during these preparation. How can we learn to keep our doors open? How to be many in the city? In society? In a theatre? We discovered that it is not easy to be many. There is no easy recipe for the meal we want to cook, no manual for the changes we want to make happen. What we found was a path and people to walk with and learn from.

There is more. As part of the thematic programme line WE HEAR YOU(TH), ANT HAMPTON, ANNA RISPOLI, FRANSESCA GRILLI, KYOKO SCHOLIERS, LARA STAAL, and MOHAMMED EL KHATIB believe listening to the voices of young people is the only way to the future. Within the new city festival {SOUS LES PAVÉS, HET STRAND}, DE SOCIALE COALITIE, PERMANENT, TOOLS FOR ACTION, and the PANORAMA RING RING writers, look at the changing city that surrounds us, on the lookout for another Brussels to emerge from under the concrete blocks of the quartier nord. With VUB/CROSSTALKS, we continue to carve out the question of how to live on earth — together with other species and nature. Learning HOW TO BE MANY? — the question we introduced last year — is a process. On our way to change, we encounter our own attachments to known powers, positions and routines. Yes, being many is not easy. Especially in times where uncertainty remains a constant — and a shadow continues to occupy one seat out of two on our tribune — and especially when doubt has been nesting for so long in our work and in our wallets. That is why we decided to twist the rules, rewrite some conventions and try to learn anew how to organize structural solidarity.
