BODILY ATTEMPTS AT SOCIAL SCULPTING PERFORMATIK17 betreedt samen met 14 Brusselse partners de boeiende schemerzone waar makers – deze editie zijn het er meer dan 40 – morrelen aan de codes van de beeldende kunsten én de podiumkunsten. En aan jouw positie als kijker. Want als een heropleving van performance art een vernieuwing in de kunsten inzet, dan speelt die zich nu vooral daar af.

Bij het radicaal in vraag stellen van je positie, van museale blik tot theatrale toeschouwer en verder.

In PERFORMATIK17 heeft de intrinsieke betekenis van een werk minder belang dan het samen creëren in het hier-en-nu. Dat is waar we gezamenlijk zo naar hunkeren – in een tijd waarin zelfs de ‘publieke’ ruimte geen mensen meer samenbrengt, maar een opeenstapeling blijkt van individuele eilandjes omgeven door een bubbel. De facebooktwittersnapchatinstagram-bubbel van waaruit we de beleving doorgeven, eerder dan ze zelf ten volle te beleven. Of omgekeerd, we volgen de beleving elders zonder zelf ‘present’ te zijn.

In PERFORMATIK17 nodigen Alioum Moussa en Maarten Vanden Eynde je uit voor een gesprek over wat (on)afhankelijkheid betekent. Lotte van den Berg en Daan ’t Sas converseren met jou zonder woorden. En Kate McIntosh laat je het speelse en tactiele van communiceren herontdekken. Beeldend kunstenaar Grace Schwindt brengt – in haar eerste creatie voor het theater – beweging in Bernini’s beeld Daphne en Apollo. Omgekeerd, presenteert choreograaf DD Dorvillier een gedanste collectie van haar werk uit het New York van de jaren 90. Ieva Miseviciute trekt de straat op, op zoek naar manieren om te overleven. Elders wordt er gebouwd en afgebroken: Philippe Quesne zet het atelier van landschapsschilder Caspar David Friedrich op scène, terwijl Feiko Beckers kluizenaarshutten neerpoot op palen. Jozef Wouters, Meg Stuart en Jeroen Peeters bouwen ondertussen de kunstenaarsruimtes van de toekomst.

Deze editie plaatst twee historische ankerpunten voor het voetlicht.

Trajal Harrell en Ola Maciejewska vertrekken van het oeuvre van Loïe Fuller, die als performanceartieste avant-la-lettre zowel Picasso als de moderne dans beïnvloedde. Bozar brengt dan weer hulde aan Yves Klein. Pieter Van den Bosch en Miet Warlop zetten de opening van deze expo letterlijk kracht bij, de erfenis van Klein transformerend tot een modus operandi voor vandaag.

Van beweging in beelden tot het beeldhouwen van beweging: lichaamssculpturen staan in deze editie centraal. Ze zijn nooit monumentaal, steeds breekbaar. PERFORMATIK17 kiest voor waarschijnlijkheid boven zekerheid.

BODILY ATTEMPTS AT SOCIAL SCULPTING PERFORMATIK17 et 14 partenaires bruxellois s’aventurent dans la zone d’ombre où les créateurs – pour cette édition, on en compte plus de 40 – triturent les codes des arts plastiques et des arts du spectacle vivant. Et à la position du spectateur. Car, si le revival de l’art de la performance suscite un renouvellement des arts, c’est précisément dans ce domaine. Dans la remise en question radicale de la position du spectateur, allant du regard muséal au spectateur de théâtre et au-delà.

Dans le cadre de PERFORMATIK17, la signification intrinsèque d’une œuvre a moins d’importance que la création dans l’ici et maintenant. C’est ce à quoi nous aspirons collectivement – à une époque où même les espaces publics ne réunissent plus les gens, mais se révèlent un empilement d’îlots individuels dans une bulle. La bulle facebooktwittersnapchatinstagram qui nous fait transmettre l’expérience avant même de l’avoir pleinement vécue nous-mêmes. Ou inversement, suivre un vécu qui se déroule ailleurs sans être soi-même « présent ». À l’occasion de PERFORMATIK17, Alioum Moussa et Maarten Vanden Eynde nous invitent à une discussion sur la signification de l’(in)dépendance.

Lotte van den Berg et Daan ’t Sas entament, quant à eux, un dialogue muet avec le public. Et Kate McIntosh nous fait redécouvrir l’aspect ludique et tactile de la communication. Dans sa première création pour le théâtre, la plasticienne Grace Schwindt anime la sculpture Apollon et Daphné du Bernin. Inversement, la chorégraphe DD Dorvillier présente une collection dansée de ses œuvres de jeunesse dans années 90 à New York. Ieva Miseviciute sort explorer les modes de survie dans les espaces publics. Ailleurs, on construit et on démolit : Philippe Quesne reconstitue l’atelier du paysagiste Caspar David Friedrich sur scène, tandis que Feiko Beckers bricole des cabanes d’ermites sur pilotis. Entre-temps, Jozef Wouters, Meg Stuart et Jeroen Peeters réalisent les espaces artistiques du futur.

Cette édition braque les projecteurs sur deux points d’ancrage historiques. Trajal Harrell en Ola Maciejewska partent de l’œuvre de Loïe Fuller qui, en tant qu’artiste de la performance avant la lettre, a influencé aussi bien Picasso que la danse moderne. Bozar rend hommage à Yves Klein en exposant des chefs-d’œuvre rarement exposés ou inédits. Pieter Van den Bosch et Miet Warlop électrisent littéralement l’inauguration de l’exposition en transformant l’héritage de Klein en mode opératoire contemporain.

For if a revival of performance art is bringing about a renewal in the arts, then this now chiefly lies in the radical questioning of your position: your gaze as a museum visitor, your role as a theatrical spectator, or something beyond this.

In PERFORMATIK17 the intrinsic meaning of a work is less important than the act of creating something together in the here and now. This is what collectively we so ardently crave – at a time in which even ‘public’ space no longer brings people together. Instead it seems to be an accumulation of individual islands, each encased by a bubble – the bubble of facebooktwittersnapchatinstagram through which we pass on experience before we fully experience it ourselves. Or vice-versa: we follow an experience somewhere else without being present ourselves.

In PERFORMATIK17, Alioum Moussa and Maarten Vanden Eynde invite you for a discussion about what (in)dependence means. Lotte van den Berg and Daan ’t Sas enter into a wordless discussion with you. And Kate McIntosh allows you to rediscover the playful and tactile side of communication. Visual artist Grace Schwindt – in her first creation for the theatre – infuses Bernini’s sculpture of Daphne and Apollo with movement. Conversely, choreographer DD Dorvillier presents a danced collection of her works while a youngster in the New York 90’s. Ieva Miseviciute heads outside to explore survival modes in the public space. Elsewhere there is construction and demolition going on: Philippe Quesne brings the landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich’s studio onto the stage, while Feiko Beckers constructs hermitages on stilts. In the meantime, Jozef Wouters, Meg Stuart and Jeroen Peeters construct the artists’ spaces of the future.

This edition puts two historical anchor points in the spotlight. Trajal Harrell and Ola Maciejewska take as their starting point the work of Loïe Fuller, a performance artist – long before the term was invented – who influenced both Picasso and modern dance. Bozar will be paying tribute to Yves Klein by showing unseen masterpieces and rarely exhibited visual works.

Pieter Van den Bosch and Miet Warlop are literally empowering the opening of the exhibition, turning Klein’s heritage into a modus operandi for today.

From movement in sculptures to the sculpting of movement: body sculptures play a central role in this edition. They are never monumental, and are always fragile. PERFORMATIK17 opts for probability over certainty. or the careful creation of social sculptures. Together with you.

NL Speciaal voor PERFORMATIK17 maakt Grace Schwindt een performance in de theaterzaal. Ze portretteert het dilemma van een ornitholoog die de olievervuiling op zeevogels bestudeert. De slachtoffers die hij optekent, dienen als trofee van de efficiëntie van het kapitalisme. Schwindt schetst treffend de relatie tussen kapitalisme en moraliteit – en de individuele ervaring in zo’n omgeving. Ze inspireert zich op de 17de-eeuwse beeldengroep Apollo en Daphne van Bernini.

Vertrekkend vanuit de dynamiek van dit bevroren tafereel, creëert ze een totaalbeeld met muziek, zang en acrobatie.

FR À l’occasion de PERFORMATIK17, Grace Schwindt crée une performance dans la salle de théâtre. Elle s’inspire du groupe statuaire Apollon et Daphné du Bernin. Partant de cette dynamique de la scène figée, Schwindt crée une image totale accompagnée de musique, de chant et d’acrobatie.

EN Especially for PERFORMATIK17, Grace Schwindt creates a performance for the theatre stage.

She portrays the dilemma of an ornithologist studying the effects of oil pollution on seabirds. The victims she records symbolise the efficiency of capitalism. Schwindt creates a poignant sketch of the relationship between capitalism and morality – and the individual experience in this kind of setting. She draws inspiration from Bernini’s 17th century Apollo and Daphne. Starting from the dynamic of this frozen scene, she creates a striking overall picture with music, song and acrobatics.

PREMIERE

GRACE SCHWINDT (°1979) is known for her performances and films, in which she integrates sculptures and drawings. In 2012, she was artist-in-residence at Wiels. She is represented by the Antwerp-based gallery Zeno X. During PERFORMATIK15 she presented the film Only a Free Individual Can Create a Free Society and an exhibition of recent video work at Argos.

Her main fields of research are contemporary art and the history and theory of exhibitions. She is the author of How to Do Things with Art, one of the seminal works on performativity within contemporary art.

FR Ce qui est si particulier à l’œuvre de Laure Prouvost est la quête de narrations polymorphes : toujours raconter des histoires à partir d’autres perspectives. La sculpture Ho What A Cake – un pain barbouillé de peinture bleue lors d’un dîner performatif – s’anime par le biais de la lumière et du son. Le phénomène force à remettre en question un objet banal à première vue.

EN The remarkable thing about Laure Prouvost’s work is her quest to create polymorphous narratives: stories told from constantly changing perspectives. The sculpture Ho What A Cake – a loaf of bread daubed with blue paint that was created during a performative dinner – comes to life through light and sound. The display compels you to question the nature of an apparently banal object.

LAURE PROUVOST (°1978, Lille) makes films and installations. In 2013, she won the prestigious Turner Prize. Ho What A Cake is part of From Wantee to Some Signs, an installation that was commissioned by Kunsthal Extra City in Antwerp.

NL Zo bijzonder in het werk van Laure Prouvost is de zoektocht naar polymorfe narratieven: verhalen verteld vanuit steeds een ander perspectief. De sculptuur Ho What A Cake – een met blauwe verf beklad brood dat ontstond tijdens een performatief diner – komt via licht en geluid tot leven. De verschijning dwingt je de aard van een op het eerste gezicht banaal object in vraag te stellen.

NL Kristof Van Gestel, Manoeuvre en Heike Langsdorf vervaardigen objecten uit textiel in allerhande vormen, kleuren en texturen. Een op taken gebaseerde choreografie van bewegingen en handelingen activeert ze. Je kunt gewoon toekijken of zelf in actie schieten.

FR Kristof Van Gestel, Manœuvre, et Heike Langsdorf confectionnent des objets en textile aux formes, aux couleurs et aux textures diverses et variées. Ils sont actionnés par une chorégraphie de mouvements et de gestes, inspirés de tâches spécifiques. On peut soit regarder faire, soit mettre la main à la pâte.

EN Kristof Van Gestel, Manoeuvre and Heike Langsdorf have created textile objects in myriad forms, colours, and textures: Vormfrakken.

They are activated by a task-based choreography of movements and actions. You can simply watch or join in yourself.

Visual artist KRISTOF VAN GESTEL introduced the participative art project Vormfrakken in 2015. He found an ideal artistic and production partner in in Manoeuvre, a socio-artistic workplace for co-creation. In addition to their artistic work, Kristof Van Gestel and HEIKE LANGSDORF are affiliated with the KASK as researchers and lecturers.

LUNÄ is a copy of the original table of the Lunar Society, an 18th-century group of British industrialists, scientists, poets, and writers. They used to hold inspiring meetings – mostly during full moon – to explore the ways in which science, technology, and art could serve society. NL Maarten Vanden Eynde en Alioum Moussa bouwen een tweedelige mobiele structuur op het Muntplein, waarbij de ene kant het tegengestelde is van de andere. Toch zijn de structuren afhankelijk van elkaar om in evenwicht te blijven. Tijdens PERFORMATIK17 nodigen ze je er per twee uit voor een gesprek over afhankelijkheid en onafhankelijkheid – op persoonlijk, politiek én artistiek vlak. Moussa en Vanden Eynde creëerden het project oorspronkelijk voor SUD2010, de kunsttriënnale in Douala (Kameroen), met als uitgangspunt de 50-jarige onafhankelijkheid van 17 Afrikaanse landen.

FR Maarten Vanden Eynde et Alioum Moussa construisent une structure mobile en deux parties à la Place de la Monnaie, dont un côté sera l’inverse de l’autre. Les structures sont néanmoins indépendantes l’une de l’autre afin de rester en équilibre. Lors de PERFORMATIK17, ils invitent le public, deux par deux, à s’entretenir sur le sens de la dépendance et de l’indépendance. Sur le plan personnel, politique et artistique. Moussa et Vanden Eynden ont initialement créé le projet pour SUD2010, la triennale d’art de Douala (Cameroun), avec pour point de départ les 50 ans d’indépendance de 17 pays africains.

EN Maarten Vanden Eynde and Alioum Moussa will be building a two-part mobile structure at Place de la Monnaie, of which one side is the other’s opposite. Yet the structures depend upon one another to stay in balance. During PERFORMATIK17 you are invited to visit them – in pairs – for a discussion about dependence and independence. At a personal, political ánd artistic level. Moussa and Vanden Eynde originally created the project for SUD2010, the triennial art event in Douala (Cameroon), whose starting point was the 50th anniversary of independence being marked by 17 African countries.

MAARTEN VANDEN EYNDE’s (°1977, Leuven) artistic practice encompasses sculpture, video, photography, installation and performance. He founded the Brussels-based independent arts space Enough Room For Space together with Marjolijn Dijkman.

He was selected for the 2017 edition of the BelgianArtPrize, with a presentation at Bozar until 20/05.

ALIOUM MOUSSA (°1977, Cameroon) is a visual artist and graphic designer.

His work ranges from street art to installation art, clothing and craft design, and is often based on social issues.

NL Miet Warlop – die ook tekent voor het festivalbeeld – introduceert drie theatrale vignetten. Op elegante wijze heffen fysieke acties, sculpturale props en scenografische interventies elkaar op. Het resultaat is een live sculpturaal gebeuren, dat telkens een vluchtige fantasie op poten zet. Op het moment van zijn voltooiing, verbrokkelt die echter voor je ogen.

EN Miet Warlop – who also created the festival image – presents a succession of theatrical vignettes, consisting of physical actions, sculptural props and scenic interventions that artfully cancel each other out on stage. The result is a sculptural live event creating a temporary fantasy that begins to crumble in the moment of its completion.

MIET WARLOP (°1978 Torhout) is a visual, living and working between Ghent, Berlin and Brussels.

Over the last years, she explored different possibilities with her Nervous Pictures and performances, both in a theatre as visual arts context.

In 2016, she presented her very first solo exhibition Crumbling Down the Circle of my Iconoclasm at KIOSK gallery (Ghent).

NL Ieva Miseviciute noemt zichzelf ‘een voormalig Litouwse clown die onproductieve gymnastiek uitoefent’. Haar werkterrein strekt zich uit van theaters, over galerijen, tot de straten van New York. Met SSSSSSSSSSSS brengt ze een solo over overlevingsinstincten in de publieke ruimte, gebaseerd op Butoh-technieken.

EN Inspired by conversational techniques from a number of different cultures, Lotte van den Berg and visual artist Daan ’t Sas build up a repertoire of possibilities for sharing time, space and words.

IEVA MISEVICIUTE (°1982, Lithuania) lives and works in New York. After an early career as a circus clown, she immersed herself in physical theatre, dance, stand-up comedy and visual art. She has performed at Documenta, Performa, Centre Pompidou and MoMa. She also co-curated the Baltic Triennial.

LOTTE VAN DEN BERG (°1975, Groningen) uses theatre to render relationships between people visible, emphasising life as an activity.

ORLA BARRY (°1969, Wexford) is both visual artist and shepherd. Her work deals with the physicality and poetics of language. A recent leitmotif running through her work is the cannibalistic, symbiotic tension between being an artist and a farmer in rural Ireland. She has shown work at SMAK, IMMA, Tate Modern, and Manifesta 2. During PERFORMATIK13 she performed the much-lauded Mountain at Bozar.

NL Ivo Dimchev kan niet ontbreken op de PERFORMATIK17-affiche: de exuberante performer miste nog geen enkele editie. Deze keer strijkt hij neer in ZSenne artlab voor zijn eerste durational performance. Zes dagen lang stort hij zich – met vele gasten – op zijn zeven favoriete kunstdisciplines. EN Ivo Dimchev is one name that cannot be missed from the PERFORMATIK17 programme: the exuberant performer has never missed a single edition. This time he sets up his first long durational performance at ZSenne artlab. For six days, he explores seven of his favorite creative activities, together with many guests. Seven fashion designers will collaborate on the project and dress him properly for each activity. Pay Ivo a visit and witness his 84-hours performance laboratory!

IVO DIMCHEV (°1976, Sofia) graduated from DasArts (Amsterdam) in 2009 and moved to Brussels.

There he founded his Volksroom, in which he gave the performing arts free rein. Now he lives between Los Angeles, New York, Vienna and Sofia, presenting his performances, vocal concerts, art exhibitions and books. He was a Kaaitheater artist-in-residence for the period 2013-2016.

NL Nora Kapfer toont een reeks schilderijen met opvallende, blinkend zwarte ondergronden. Ze lijken te staan voor een universele, achteloze communicatie die het onwaarneembare aanwezig stelt. Op de laatste dag van de expo geeft collega-kunstenaar Inka Meißner een fysiek antwoord op de werken.

FR Nora Kapfer présente une série de tableaux aux fonds noirs, brillants, ostensibles. Ils semblent incarner une communication universelle, nonchalante, qui affirme la présence de l’imperceptible.

Le dernier jour de l’exposition, sa consœur artiste Inka Meißner offre une réponse physique aux tableaux.

EN Nora Kapfer presents a series of paintings which she developed during her 2016 residency at WIELS. The painterly gestures and symbols resemble the shapes of hearts or the contours of bones, organs, fruits and blossoms. Doused in a layer of Bitumen, they become readable yet are simultaneously denied. The symbols allow for a universal and abstracted communication, rendering present the imperceptible. Kapfer invites fellow artist and frequent collaborator Inka Meißner as a bodily respondent to the paintings. Meißner and Kapfer propose a collaboration between the performing and visual arts that goes beyond a mere reenactment.

Hij verheft die tot goddelijke schepsels of sjamanentotems, altijd in de buurt.

Son instrument ressemble à un autel, composé d’animaux en peluche qu’il hisse au rang de créatures divines ou de totems chamaniques, et les garde toujours près de lui.

EN Charlemagne Palestine is unleashing his strumming technique on the Bösendorfer Imperial: a piano that covers eight complete octaves. His instrument looks like a sculpted altar made of cuddly toys. He elevates these to divine creatures or shamanistic totems that are always close by.

NL Na Tate Liverpool reist de ambitieuze overzichtstentoonstelling van Yves Klein naar Brussel.

Klein werd bekend met zijn ultramarijnblauwe monochromen. Als geen ander vertolken ze zijn ideeën over spirituele oneindigheid en zijn zoektocht naar het Immateriële. Klein was met zijn beeldende kunst en spectaculaire performances de voorloper van de happening en de body art. In deze expo maak je via ongeziene meesterwerken en nauwelijks vertoond beeldmateriaal kennis met zijn oeuvre.

FR Après la Tate Liverpool, l’ambitieuse exposition rétrospective de Yves Klein débarque à Bruxelles. Klein a acquis la notoriété avec ses monochromes bleus ultramarins. Comme nulles autres, ces œuvres expriment les idées de l’artiste sur l’infinité spirituelle et sa quête de l’Immateriel.

Steyerl raakt verstrikt in kwantum-superpositie, terwijl Mroué bij zijn vader aanklopt voor wiskundige berekeningen. Ze stoten op de ‘nul-waarschijnlijkheid’: een ruimte waarin alles mogelijk is maar niets te verklaren valt.

FR Dans cette performance-lecture, Rabih Mroué et Hito Steyerl réfléchissent sur la probabilité.

Steyerl s’empêtre dans la superposition quantique tandis que Mroué frappe à la porte de son père pour des calculs mathématiques. Ils se heurtent à la « probabilité zéro » : un espace dans lequel tout est possible, mais rien ne peut s’expliquer.

HITO STEYERL is a film-maker and writer whose films can be seen in museums and galleries.

NL Ola Maciejewska laat zich in dit stuk voor drie dansers inspireren door Loïe Fuller, één van de pioniers van de moderne dans én de performance art. Ze onderzoekt de verhouding tussen mens en materie in de kunsten door beweging te creëren in grote doeken. Ze speelt met het samenvallen van lichaam en object en de strijd die de twee met elkaar aangaan.

FR Dans cette pièce pour trois danseurs, Ola Maciejewska s’inspire de Loïe Fuller, une des pionnières de la danse moderne et de l’art de la performance. Elle analyse la relation de l’être humain et de la matière dans les arts en créant du mouvement dans de grands voiles. Elle joue avec la rencontre du corps et de l’objet et le combat qui s’engage entre les deux.

EN In this piece for three dancers, Ola Maciejewska draws her inspiration from Loïe Fuller, one of the pioneers of modern dance and performance art. She explores the relationship in the arts between human beings and physical matter by creating movement in large pieces of fabric. She plays with the confluence of bodies and objects and the battle that these wage.

NL Na een week resideren in Villa Empain, toont DD Dorvillier een collectie gedanste fragmenten van haar werk als jongeling in het New York van de jaren 90. De kleurrijke tentoonstelling Decor in Villa Empain vormt een nieuwe backdrop. Deze nieuwe manier van terugblikken op én in dans, wil zo subjectief, esthetisch en speels mogelijk zijn.

FR Après une semaine de résider à Villa Empain, DD Dorvillier présente une collection d’extraits dansés puisés de vidéos d’œuvres de ses débuts à New York dans les années 90. L’exposition bigarrée Decor à la Villa Empain fait office de toile de fond. Cette façon de porter un regard rétrospectif sur la danse se veut aussi subjective, esthétique et ludique que possible.

EN After one week of residing at Villa Empain, DD Dorvillier presents a collection of danced fragments drawn from videos of her works while a youngster in the New York 90’s. The colourful exhibition Decor at Villa Empain forms a new backdrop. This way of looking back and into dance aims to be as subjective, aesthetic, and playful as possible.

DD DORVILLIER is a Puerto Rican born choreographer based in France who focuses on the relationship between abstraction, embodiment, language, perception, and meaning.

Her work has been shown at Kaaitheater several times, as well as at The Kitchen, PS122, Impulstanz, DeSingel, HAU, and Centre Georges Pompidou, among others.

NL Trajal Harrell belicht het moment in de dansgeschiedenis waar vrouwelijke artiesten de grenzen aftastten tussen amusement, erotische dans, en vroege experimenten in moderne dans. Hij laat CAEN AMOUR de vorm aannemen van een hoochie koochie-show: deze buikdansspektakels doken op tijdens de wereldexpo in Chicago (1893). Met verleidelijke bewegingen lokken de schaars geklede ‘hoochies’ je richting backstage, om de festiviteiten aan de ‘koochie’-zijde te onthullen.

FR Trajal Harrell éclaire le moment de l’histoire de la danse dans lequel les artistes féminines ont exploré les frontières entre le divertissement, la danse érotique et les premières expériences de danse moderne. CAEN AMOUR adopte la forme d’un hoochie coochie show : ces spectacles de danse du ventre ayant fait surface à l’Exposition universelle de Chicago en 1893. Avec des mouvements séduisants, les hoochies très peu vêtues vous entraînent vers les coulisses, pour dévoiler les festivités côté koochies.

EN Trajal Harrell spotlights the period in dance history in which female artists started exploring the boundaries between entertainment, erotic dance, and early experimentation in modern dance.

CAEN AMOUR is structured as a hoochie koochie show: these belly dance spectacles emerged at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. With a seductive performance, the scantily dressed ‘hoochies’ lure you around to the backstage area, to reveal the festivities on the ‘koochie’ side.

TRAJAL HARRELL’s performances grace both theatres and museums. In May 2016, he concluded a two-year residency at MoMA (New York). At Kaaitheater, he has already performed (M)imosa, Antigone Sr. and a collaboration with the artist Sarah Sze at PERFORMATIK13.
