INTRODUCTION

Every other year, Performatik showcases contemporary performance art or ‘live art’, together with a great many Brussels partners. For eleven days, artists enter a twilight zone in which they tinker with the codes of both the performing arts and the visual arts. Performance has flourished in the arts world in the past, but over the past few years has increasingly come to occupy its own distinct space. Vito Acconci, who presented work at Performatik09, once claimed that performance art can only ever be a temporary art form in an artist’s oeuvre; one moment that shakes everything up as an announcement of a new period. But since three performance artists won golden lions at the previous Venice Biennale and performance art has become a fixture at art biennials and art fairs, ‘immaterial’ art forms appear to have acquired a permanent place in the world of visual art. Is it a sign of the times that living bodies increasingly occupy museums? Are museums skillfully responding to consumers’ desire for experiences? And do artists avidly adapt, for example by creating a theatre version and a museum version of their work? Or are they searching for new forms and methods of presentation that tamper with the established codes of artworks, audiences, and institutions? Over the past decade, Performatik has decisively opted for the latter. Performance art is an art form that is essentially fragile – and must be. In this sixth edition, visual artist Laure Prouvost – in collaboration with Sam Belinfante and Pierre Droulers – is presenting her first performance work for the stage, and choreographer Noé Soulier is letting twenty artworks from the collection of the Centre Pompidou occupy the theatre space. Alexis Blake and Jocelyn Cottencin are energizing art-historical works and offering a fresh perspective. Jimmy Robert, Jozef Wouters/Globe Aroma, Last Yearz Interesting Negro, and PRICE are shifting the boundaries of visibility and invisibility. Historical backdrop of Performatik19 is the Bauhaus movement, which emerged 100 years ago. A number of Bauhaus principles have become deeply relevant again: the cross-fertilization between disciplines, the status of the author and the collective, the arts academy as an artist community, artisanry versus mass production, bringing art closer to everyday life, and the relationship between bodies and space as fundament for the development of new worldviews. The principles of Bauhaus form an inspirational source for the works of Radouan Mriziga, Ula Sickle and the a.pass researchers. Moreover, in this edition artists will create together with students, more than ever. They don’t just show end results, but invite you to their rehearsals or open studios. Another thread in the festival is death, loss and performativity. In March we will commemorate the 2016 attacks on Brussels. During U-Loss and Bardos States, Barbara Raes and The Monastery, respectively, will develop new rituals around loss. Lotte van den Berg and Liz Magic Laser will explore the borders between performance, therapy and politics, while IN/FINITY looks at the intersection between care and art. Performance cannot be pigeon-holed. Expect one-on-one performances, performances of 4 minutes to an entire day, rituals, performed research, concerts, a demonstration in the city, dance, sound installations, lecture performances, debates, activated exhibitions… and a party. The common element is always the live event, the encounter between you and the performer in the here and now. Welcome!

INLEIDING

Welkom! 4

INTRODUCTION

LOCATION KAAITHEATER

EN Now that bodies are occupying more and more museums, Noé Soulier is presenting an opposite movement: what if instead of bodies, the artworks themselves adapted to a new space? Performing Art presents twenty pieces from the collection of the Centre Pompidou. You do not see them as you walk through a museum, but from your seat in the theatre.

EN Originally, Monumental was a film about monuments, statues and memorials in public spaces. Jocelyn Cottencin brought these monuments to life with twelve performers, transforming the rigid forms of sculpture into a story. Cottencin is now handing the performance on to a group of students from the ULB and La Cambre. How do you represent performance and time in the immovable space of collective memory?

What began for Alexis Blake as a research project on the representation of women in Italian art soon evolved into a choreography and into a performance. Accompanied by four musicians in the Horta Hall at BOZAR, she makes an archive of poses abstract, stripping them of their history and context. She thus questions notions such as gender, representation, reproduction and seriality.

NL Moeder, Madonna, verleidster, hoer, martelares, heilige, godin… GABINO RODRIGUEZ MX JASSEM HINDI SA/DE LEONARDO DELOGU IT MELIH GENZBOYAÇI TR/NL

EN How do we deal with mourning and loss nowadays? Life is a succession of transitional moments, major and minor connections that inevitably change you. The decreasing importance of traditional rituals to experience transitional moments has resulted in a search for alternatives. That is why Barbara Raes created a workspace for unacknowledged loss and new death rituals: Beyond the Spoken. She is coming to the Kaaistudios to share her practice along with seven artists with very different cultural backgrounds. They will each explore the intersection between art and ritual.

‘One day, a large banner suddenly appeared on the facade of Decoratelier, showing a virtual vision of what the neighbourhood might look like in the future. The atelier and its surroundings had been replaced by a large park. That same day, I met a group of people from Globe Aroma and we decided to dig a hole towards this future park that, right now, is still an old factory. In the enormous void we taught each other to build out loud: a form of construction in which there is no difference between speaking, dreaming and building. Gradually an alternative park took shape, a park where memories and imagination intermingle, a secret garden filled with shadows and a jumble of grey zones. As yet I understand little of it, but it seems to be a place where people can decide for themselves whether or not to be visible or invisible, and this in the heart of the city.’

EN On a big screen and before a live audience, Bryana Fritz snips up heavy philosophical texts until they suddenly become light and readable. By combining them with snippets of medieval literature, music and images made up of digital characters, she creates a performative collage in protest of her digital cage. Slowly but surely, Fritz achieves a new balance between her body and the screen.

PREMIERE

BRYANA FRITZ was born in Chicago and has studied dance in Minneapolis, Essen and with PARTS. She’s since lived and worked in Brussels as a dancer, performance-maker and poet. With this new performance, Fritz further pursues her romance with dance, poetry and the digital screen.

JAN VROMMAN & VINCENT DUNOYER POETAS SIN ALFABETO SUN 27/01 > SUN 28/04 | WED-SUN 11:00 > 18:00 | ARGOS | € 6/4 This exhibition is the remarkable result of an alliance between two extraordinary, very different artists. Although Vincent Dunoyer and Jan Vromman appear to relate to one another like yin and yang, like a minimalist to a maximalist, they share the same unruliness. For this project, they are focusing on the concept of ‘Spain’.

The film and television producer, video artist and theatre director JAN VROMMAN (°1958) blazes his own trail. His work is socially committed and suffused with human warmth. With a refined sense of humour, he combines the documentary and the analytic with the anecdotal and the seemingly banal.
