EDITOR’S LETTER
JANELLE RIVERA Writer/Editor
Pardon me as I’m straying away from the usual this month. My heart is heavy yet full of gratitude as this month marks a bittersweet moment for me – you see, this is my final edition of Venture Magazine. As I reflect on my time here, Kadena Air Base and Okinawa have been nothing short of extraordinary for my family and I. This island paradise has surpassed every expectation I had with the countless adventures and memories we will treasure forever.
My advice: embrace your time here. Explore everything this incredible place has to offer. Okinawa is a treasure waiting to be explored from the breathtaking sights to the thrilling activities.
And remember, Kadena FSS facilities are always here to enhance your Okinawa experience. They have great discounts, ready-made trip itineraries, delicious food, amazing events, and fun-filled activities; everything you need to make the most of your stay here.
This month, we invite you to join us for Valentine’s Day celebration – or Galentine’s – and the Big Game Parties across various facilities. And don’t miss this year’s Whale Watching season – one of the splashiest Okinawa experiences. Hurry and reserve your spot now through Kadena Marina or Kadena Information, Tickets and Travel.
Over the years, I have been privileged to work with the best FSS team I’ve ever encountered. The quality of events, the dedication of employees along with the sense of community here are unparalleled. It has truly been an honor to serve alongside such an incredible group of people.

To our amazing and ever-loyal customers, thank you for trusting us and for your unwavering support. Your smiles, laughter, and joy at our events have been the driving force behind everything we do. It’s been our privilege to bring you a little piece of home while you’re away from yours.
To my fellow Kadena FSS employees, especially those whom I’ve had the privilege to work with, thank you for your hard work, passion, and commitment. Whether you’re behind the scenes, in the kitchen, or working the frontline, you’ve made Kadena feel like a true community. Keep being the incredible team that you are!
To the Marketing team, saying goodbye to you is one of the hardest. Thank you for your tireless dedication and for making this tour one I’ll never forget. CULTURAL CORNER Oki
Join me as we step into a world of sophisticated patterns and vibrant colors of kimono. With its timeless elegance and history, kimono is a living masterpiece where every detail and fold of fabric tells a story and serves a purpose. It o ers a glimpse of Japan’s cultural heritage and tradition.
Wearing a kimono is one of the many popular activities tourists often include in their itinerary when visiting Japan. This experience not only allows travelers to immerse themselves in the Japanese culture but also gives them the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of this iconic garment.
“Kimono,” a traditional Japanese clothing, originated during the Heian period (794 –1185). Over time, it evolved from a simple, straight-line cut to incorporating layers, blending of colors, and using di erent fabrics to accommodate weather changes, gender distinctions, and eventually transforming into the kimono we know. and recognize today.
In modern times, kimonos are rarely worn in everyday life and are typically reserved for special occasions such as festivals, tea ceremonies, and formal events like weddings, graduations, and funerals.
Okinawa, however, has its own unique take on kimono designs. “Ryusou,” or traditional Ryukyuan clothing, holds a distinctive place in Okinawa’s history. Unlike mainland Japan’s kimono designs, Ryusou showcases the unique historical, cultural, and traditional in uences of the various countries in which the region has interacted with over the centuries.
Ryusou designs also draw inspiration from both Chinese and Japanese clothing, di ering in appearance, color choices, materials, and the way they are worn. In addition, fabrics are carefully chosen in consideration of Okinawa’s climate and other local factors.
Ryusou kimonos feature wide-open sleeves, making the color matching of the lining visible through the sleeve openings an important detail to consider. Interestingly, the Ryusou worn by noblemen and women also have distinct di erences, from the style of the hat to the way the knots are tied.
What truly sets Okinawa’s traditional kimono apart are the intricate details on the fabric; from the use of “bingata,” a special Okinawan dyeing technique, to the unique and symbolic patterns woven into the garment. Bingata is known for its vibrant colors, which re ects the island’s natural and lively beauty.
The bright hues of reds and yellows represent the stunning landscapes along with the vibrant blue to represent the ocean. The use of these colors along with the traditional patterns represent the cultural signi cance, making each Ryusou a wearable masterpiece of art.
However, this isn’t the only way Okinawans create their kimonos.
Locally woven textiles, such as "Shuriori," "Kimejima Tsumugi," and many others, are also used – many of which are known as Important Traditional Crafts of Japan.
Want to know more? Dive deeper into the world of kimonos with Schilling Community Center’s Kimono Tapestry Workshop. Discover all there is to know about this historical garment and learn the art of properly wearing your very own kimono, step by step.
