H
ey Readers! As always, thank you for picking up this issue of Venture magazine! With summer deals and Independence Day celebrations, we have so much to share with you!
If you are curious about the 4th of July events, the Officers’ Club is hosting a block party; be sure to get tickets early! If you are looking for a fireworks show, be sure to follow Kadena Force Support Squadron and Schilling Community Center on Facebook for details! Speaking of Schilling, if you are looking for a fun activity for the kids, check out page 40 for more information about Harry Potter® Bingo! Also, Outdoor Rec is hosting Family Adventure Week this month for an excellent activity for the whole family! Check out the deets on pages 26 & 27. Hikes and adventures await! If water sports are calling your name, check out the Kadena Marina — we are featuring the Marina in our FSS Spotlight this month! Also, the Sea Shack is open, so hop on over there to find rentals for kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and life vests.
We know the Food Spread is a fan-favorite, so check out pages 14 & 15 to see the limited-time specials at all your favorite FSS restaurants. We hear Café Latte in the Officers’ Club has a delicious red, white, and blue pancake special. The Rock Enlisted Club Complex is hosting another Mongolian BBQ night as well. All the information is on page 10.
Before I go, I wanted to take a moment to thank all the readers and members of Team Kadena. I am sad to say goodbye, but this is my last issue of Venture Magazine as the editor, and while it is bittersweet, it has been my privilege to serve you all. Keep reading, keep adventuring, and keep tagging us on Instagram and use the hashtag #FindSomethingSpecial! I genuinely do love seeing all the places our readers go. As always, be safe and follow your commands directives.
Cheers! Meagan

ater and summer go together like... peanut butter and jelly? Noodles and miso? Mochi and bean paste? Take your pick! But we think water and summer are the perfect pair. Fortunately for us, the Kadena Marina is located one mile outside of Gate One, and the Marina offers just about anything you could need for summer water fun. Imagine this scenario. (We feel like it is probably pretty realistic.) You have landed on this beautiful island, you see and smell the ocean, but maybe you aren’t sure where to start? Or perhaps you haven’t done a water sport, like diving, in years and want a refresher. The Kadena Marina offers classes for all things diving. Open water certifications, advanced certifications, and refresher courses — the Marina can help. Kennedy Garcia, the lead sales clerk at the Marina dive shop, shared with us some tips! “A big piece of advice I would give to someone just landing on island would be to not wait to get in the water. Every time someone completes a scuba course, their first question is, ‘Why did I wait so long to do this?’ Get out there and explore everything Okinawa has to offer; don’t wait until your last month here to cram everything in. We live in such a beautiful place, filled with hiking and diving, and rich in culture and history — definitely take time to explore it.” We agree with you, Kennedy! He also shared with us that kids as young as age 10 can start diving classes. So diving could be your new family activity. Plus, it is never too early to begin teaching the kiddos about ocean safety.
KADENA MARINA
However, maybe diving isn’t your wheelhouse? How about surfing? The Marina offers surf lessons, and it is $20 for a two-hour lesson. With an expert surf instructor, Erin, you are sure you be riding the waves safely in no time. Of course, lesson times depend on the wind, tide, and of course waves! Most of the time, these lessons occur during the week, so this would be a great summer activity for teenagers while they are out of school! Not entirely on board yet? Funny we should mention “on board,” because if there is still a debate on which water activity is for you, there are always boat tours on the Marina’s very own boat, Venture. Be sure to check out their monthly schedule on their social media page or pop by and take a look, but the seasonal tours are fantastic. For example, every winter, humpback whales migrate from Russia to the warm Okinawa waters en route to Hawaii. Venture sets out on boat tours every weekend during this time, so add it to the bucket list. Other boat tours also include snorkel spots, hidden gem diving locations, and so much more.
On top of all the excitement with classes, surfing, and boat tours, the Marina also sits right along a beach with a fantastic view, swimming area, and rentals. The Sea Shack is open for the summer and has the best rates on life vests, standup paddleboards, and kayaks. Customers can experience the water and remain near dry land while using great equipment that won’t break the bank. And speaking of saving money, Kennedy gave us the inside scoop on the 4th of July sale. “We always have really great deals for our 4th of July sale, and I love getting people set up with new gear! We are fully stocked with diving and snorkeling gear and even the felt-bottom booties that we recommend everyone have.” So be sure to stock up or renew your gear this summer at the dive shop. Okay, so be honest, have we convinced you to hop on over to Kadena Marina to celebrate summer the Okinawa way? Let us know by taking pictures of all the adventures and tag us! We love to see where our readers go for adventures. We hope Kadena Marina is one of the stops!

Tanabata: Star Festival by Meagan Abell
T
anabata, also known as the Star Festival, literally translates to “Evening of the Seventh” and is celebrated in Japan on the seventh day of the seventh month, 7 July.
The story behind this festival is full of folklore and tradition. However, the origins are rooted in a love story between a young woman Orihime who loves to weave, and a young man Hikoboshi, a hardworking cattleman. Deeply in love, the two quickly married. However, they soon began to neglect their duties as a weaver and cattleman. Orihime’s father was angry and separated the couple to opposite sides of a river, only allowing them to meet on the seventh day of the seventh month each year. Two stars show the representation of this story in the sky. Stars Vega and Altair separated by the Milky Way, only come together to meet on “Tanabata” to reunite for their annual evening of love and togetherness. Different traditions for this holiday pop up all across Japan, but one of the most popular is to write a wish on a small piece of colorful paper, tie it to a bamboo branch, and hope the wish comes true! While the colorful wishmaking is seen here in Okinawa, the day of Tanabata on the lunar calendar is spent cleaning graves and tombs of family and loved ones, offering beverages, incense, and small gifts to guide the pathway of ancestor spirits home for Obon, an annual summer event to commemorate the ancestors. If you are looking for a fun activity to share with your kiddos this summer, this is a great way to teach Japanese culture and traditions to your kiddos. So if you see some beautiful bamboo covered in color slips of paper, snap a picture and tag us on Instagram, @kadenaFSS. We would love to see it!
