LETTER FROM EDITORS Every year the fashion industry celebrates what is to come with a little event called Fashion Week. All over the globe fashionistas anxiously await the word on what’s hot and what’s not. Fashion Week celebrates looking forward to the Future of Fashion. In this issue, we imagine the Future of Fashion, but not just the immediate future. With editorials ranging from recycled everyday materials to couture clothing the possibilities are endless. Our contributors were very creative with their futuristic muses and this issue is a visual fest. So set phasers to stunning and prepare to time warp. VOLUME VI Editors Lynzi Judish Kadie Murphy Designer Madeline Brandt Contributing Writers Eliza Georgieva Kadie Murphy Lynzi Judish Contributing Photographers Alexander Nyrtup Amanda Lauran Bryan Taylor Johnson Christina Kapl Christiana Negoescu Yila Dong Emily Damoiseaux Forberger tKrystian Freddy D'Hoe Julie Ray Katie Weyers Lynzi Judish Melanie Stuppi Mike Mor Raen Badua Redavell Tjen Samdarko Eltosam Stanislaw Jagiello Stuart McCarthy Vanessa Mills Wander Aguilar Yasitha Peiris Featured Artists Zim & Darshelle

XOXO, Kadie When we’re fantasizing about the future of fashion, it’s almost impossible to really guess what will be “en vogue” tomorrow. Of course we can fashion forecast all we want, but how far in the future can we really go? It’s impossible to really know. What I can predict based on this issue is that the future according to many talented industry professionals means recycling. As you flip through the pages of Volume VI, count how many times you see a garment made of something recycled or refurbished. I’m guessing this means the future means preservation. It means recycling what’s old into something new. Of course, the fashion industry is constantly generating modern concepts from versed fashions, but maybe the future means physically refurbishing vintage into something conceptually different. Mingle recycled concepts and clothing with a little fantasy, as you’ll see through our cosplay feature, and I think the contributors of Jute may be on to something. XOXO, Lynzi

SY TA N A F Y B D E IR P S IN N IO FASH BY LYNZI JUDISH s & Zim Killgore

Interview with Darshelle Steven

When you think about fashion, it’s easy to envision runways and advertisements for major fashion labels and editorial spreads in your favorite magazines. What we don’t often think about is where fashion comes from. What inspired a designer to mix lace and leather for the first time? What did they see that created a story behind their designs? Who were these garments created for? As we dawn another year of new clothing for S/S 2014 collections, it’s another year of looking forward to the future of fashion. It’s a time to ask these questions and wonder where this next year will take us. So, what’s next? Well, we could pull ideas from every facet of society. My personal favorite being the cosplay community. Think about it. Where else do you see ancient armory and renaissance garb being mixed with droids? Have you seen the outfits in video games and your favorite Anime? Imagine real life people wearing these outfits. Fabulous, right? A little difficult for everyday attire, but imagine these outfits as the life force behind a label. A new man and woman with a wardrobe meant to conquer armies and full of power. Now THAT is what I hope to see in the future: lines of clothing to be reckoned with. This is exactly why we have interviewed the amazing Darshelle Stevens and Zim Killgore.

These photographers are pipelined into the cosplay and fantasy realms and create some of the most beautiful imagery based around some fabulous fictional characters. My wish for 2014 is a little bit of their creativity and life force fused into every fashion week around the world. Where did you begin your career as a photographer? ZIM: I began my career as a photographer almost 7 years ago. I had a friend who was into photography show me his new DSLR Canon 20D camera, which at the time wasn’t very interesting to me. After playing with it a few times and getting to know the very basics of it, I started to actually enjoy taking photos. I had a job opportunity in Texas in which I moved to that state. It required me to travel a lot and I wanted to buy a camera to document my travels. I purchased a Canon 5D (Classic) and took photos every day as practice. DARSHELLE: Photography has been a favorite hobby of mine since the Myspace days...almost 9 years ago. It wasn’t until about 4 years ago though that I decided to pursue it professionally. I went to an art school for about a year while living in Michigan, but then dropped out to move to California and chase much bigger dreams. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to pursue, but I’ve always been drawn to the surreal, anything conceptual, or that awes me.

ZIM

DARSHELLE

zimkillgore.com What draws you to the world of fantasy/cosplay? As I grew fonder of Photoshop and dynamic lighting, my style sort of shifted into fantasy looking photos. I never really thought of cosplay as an outlet for photography until I had a friend of mine ask me to shoot her outfit as Catwoman. Then like magic, the two fit very well. I still didn’t have any hand in a network of cosplay, so it was a slow process to get into. I feel cosplay and my art complement one another: it lets us both play pretend. Where/whom/what is the place/person/thing you draw the most inspiration from? I apologize for the vague answer because I don’t have certain places I draw inspiration from. Sometimes it’s as simple as a friend and I discussing funny ideas and one just sparks up, other times I zone out into a darker vibe and kind of let the emotion take over and build a shoot. Movies, music, people, art and the environment can inspire me.

darshellestevensphotography.com

What draws you to the world of fantasy/cosplay? Growing up I was always playing make believe, as most kids do. I was fascinated by video games, sci-fi movies, etc...anything that broke the barriers of reality. I’m always amazed by the human mind and how we can create worlds that are completely unfamiliar to us. It’s always been a goal of mine to cross the real and surreal and blend them together seamlessly. I love it. Where/whom/what is the place/person/thing you draw the most inspiration from? Like I mentioned before, I draw a lot of my inspiration from other medias such as video games and movies or even illustrations or paintings. It was just a perfect coincidence for me that I found the world of cosplay after dabbling in fashion.

Explain a little about your process conceptually. The process is usually never the same until I have a solid idea. Then with that idea I’ll start to put the puzzle pieces together: location, outfit, models. Then all the technical stuff comes to play, like a makeup artist, hair, props, lighting and which lenses would best capture the vibe. After the shoot it goes into the digital world.

Explain a little about your process conceptually. Wel,l first off when planning a shoot, I figure out what character or theme I’ll be photographing. Then I seek out the most desirable location that fits the concept. Then while I’m shooting I go for the dynamic shots, with the lighting, colors, and scenery to really set the mood of the photo. Then I choose which one I want to edit, and add all the missing elements that make the photo transcend into the more surreal side of the spectrum while maintaining that bit of realism I love.

Who is your favorite character you’ve ever photographed/created? I would have to say my friend Jason Justice as Vash the Stampede. He came to me asking to shoot his costume he was going to retire and wanted an epic photo to end it with. We planned it out and had an early morning (2am- 11am) shoot at a location 3 hours away. He is an artist himself and we were so sleep deprived that the ideas we came up with just worked so well. The lightning was perfect and I decided to not use my professional lights. The elements I used worked so well and he was soooooo into character. It was so easy and a pleasant shoot. I would do that day over and over again exactly how it was. Do you think your work has a place in the fashion realm? I used to be more well known in the fashion/alt scene. Then with any trend, I died out with that style of fashion shoots. I feel cosplay is getting bigger and bigger. My business partner Darshelle and I both have similar interests and styles that I feel we can integrate into anything we want. Fashion has a LOT of competition in it and it also has a lot of trends including style of photography. If you don’t shoot a certain way, you won’t be looked at unless you have a name for yourself. If you have a certain style, you should try all kinds of genres of photography and see what you can do with each of them. I can see fashion integrating well with my work, I just don’t know if fashion would like my work at the moment.

Who is your favorite character you’ve ever photographed/created? My favorite photo I’ve ever created thus far has to be my Wonder Woman one of Kamui Cosplay. I blew myself out of the water with that. There isn’t one thing I don’t like about the photo, and I usually get sick of my work after a couple weeks or so, but not with Wonder Woman. I guess in some sort of cheesy way it can be symbolic because ever since I created that photo I’ve felt a little more empowered in my own creativity. Do you think your work has a place in the fashion realm? I’d have to say yes, especially lately since I’ve been involving myself more in the cosplay community. If you really think about it, cosplay is fashion after all. And there are a lot of really talented people and “designers” in the community. I think they really deserve all the respect in the world for what they do. So in a sense, I really do think my photography has a place in the fashion realm, especially as time goes on and cosplay becomes more available to the mainstream.

COPENHAGEN FASHION WEEK Written by: Eliza Georgieva

Photos courtesy of Copenhagen Fashion Week

Copenhagen Fashion Week AW14, sponsored by TONI&GUY, had everything to offer—from minimalism and takete, to the softest maluma and a variety of prints and accessories. With 40 shows and over 50 events divided in six fabulous days, it made the Scandinavian statement that creative minds not only function in cold weather, but manage to create designs to remember! See our short report on the fashion week in the face of 6 selected Danish Fashion Houses, provided by our correspondent journalist Eliza Georgieva.

anne sof ie madsen As the theme for Anne Sofie Madsen’s collections change, the vision stays the same: a wish to show the well-known through the un-known and to use traditional handcraft methods and couture techniques within ready-to-wear. On this Fashion Week, Anne Sofie Madsen told a fashion story of neo-nomadic futuristic punk she called “A journey that wasn’t”. Leather, her signature material, can be found in almost every garment, often mixed with chains, microfiber, chiffon or even silk and neoprene, thus helping to create a fantasy-fusion look of a female “warrior.” A balance is found within the heavy pieces and minimalistic styling - short hair, light make up and handmade silver accessories by jewelry designer Trine Tuxen. On the side, the young designer expressed her rich imagination through her work in collaboration with Kopenhagen Fur, creating six inspiring looks of mixed toughness and fragility.

asger juel larsen The signature psychotic sophistication in Asger Juel Larsen’s creations followed this season as well. A robo-dreamy fusion of harsh lines, insane mono prints, leather and nylon was shown to create an atmosphere of a wicked “I-tookpieces-of-my-crazy-dream-and-put-it-into-clothes-f**k-off”-moment. Asger’s obsessiveness with jackets has reached a point where each of his looks has a jacket, and they’re all screaming madness either because of their cut, shape, material or simply for their expressive awesomeness. We particularly fell in love with the female looks, which were show-stoppers, telling a beautifully outlined story of futuristic sporty avant-garde. The young designer’s sense for trend interpretation is right on spot as well - the show included prints, metallics, big accessories, material-blocking and zippers. A rather inspired collection, that also left us inspired.

by malene birger There’s no way to go through Copenhagen Fashion Week without seeing the By Malene Birger show and it can be called many things—effervescent, dreamy, rich, playful, elegant, fresh, modern, inspired, fantastic! There is so much going on—sequins, marble prints, pinstripes, cashmere, python print-leather, high collars, v-necks, all combined with magnificent accessories, shoes and bags. The overall look-statement seemed like a successful splash between Bohemian, Royal, and Casual “spirits of fashion”. Soft color card right on the spot, flattering lines and styling: the models down the runway looked absolutely gorgeous. Malene Birger showed the world for yet another time that she’s the Queen of Scandinavian Femininity.

david andersen Dim Lights. The sound of a horse. And a jacket made entirely out of carpet. David Andersen welcomed the year of the Horse with his show - stunning cuts, animal materials and cold colours mixed with insanely long high ponytails for the female looks. The sounds of horses were interpreted in the music, as well. Overall, the collection looked like a dark nomadic fairytale, with the male looks being the riders—fabulous princes in well-crafted suits and the female looks being the horses—elegant, but tough. Leather, carpet, mesh, cotton and fur were among the materials used.

ganni Ditte Reffstrup and Katrine Green at Ganni are one of the few Scandi artists who create for the modern feminine IT-young woman, who likes classic items that look fantastic and modern. Their AW14 collection is offering a huge variety in prints, shapes and fabrics. There is definitely something for every occasion and the introduction of lace is triumphant, featuring in looks styled with a printed bomber jacket, or as a part of a beautiful evening dress. Leather not-so-short-shorts are femininely matched with fur and an overall Classic-with-a-little-something-spirit rules over the looks. The color card, the prints, the variety, the styling, it’s all telling a story of a very contemporary elegant woman. It’s beautiful!

stine goya Do you like candy? Who doesn’t? Now imagine an oversized look of candy color garments à la Stine Goya. Or at least this is how the show started. However, it very fast became dark and more fitted. It then transitioned to another navy blue story with mono prints in white and a glimpse of red, only to finish in black pieces with custom golden prints. The sewing skills and design of Stine Goya is out of the question—she’s great. However, her AW14 collection lacks focus and statement. It’s like she wanted to make several different fashion shows into one, but the looks from each don’t look complete and it turns out overall confusing. We wish Stine Goya to regain her voice next season.

Photographer Lynzi Judish Writer Kadie Murphy Hair Stylist Kadie Murphy Makeup Artist Julia Nicole Hernandez Models Olga Mikhaylov, Brynn Schwartz, Kate Creel (all Donna Baldwin Agency) You there, with the ice in your veins and the cold robotic heart, I can tell the future hasn’t been easy on you. You’ve hardened from your human form into a Femme Droid to deal with the “1984.” Everything is metal for you, and nature has gone away stripping the beauty from the world. But you Femme Droid, you aim to bring it back with your posh posing. A little eyeliner here, some cheek color there, and the Femme Droid becomes just the femme. You are the future of beauty, Femme Droid.

OLGA THE UNSTOPPABLE She shines a mirror to your darkness.
