MIX IT UP: refresh your wardrobe for spring Story by Erica Van Noy When the world explodes with color and life at the start of Spring, the atmosphere is infectious and spontaneous. We feel the urge to refresh elements in our lives and test out new trends. Pattern play is a natural fit for this. So often in the colder months everyone is buried under warm layers. Putting the coat away for a while creates an uplifting mood in the city and experimenting with different patterns is a source for the joy and positivity that the season brings. It’s exciting to wear an expression of the brightness of Spring. We live in a world full of passion and originality, fashion is an outlet for those emotions. Spring encourages happiness and pattern play enhances that. It is the art of combining clashing prints and textures: creating a fun statement. This may sound impossible, scary even, to attempt. For me, the hardest part about this trend is narrowing down my options for experimentation. This year at the Ready-To-Wear shows and in the Resort collections, stripes and florals, as well as geometric, abstract and distorted patterns were the most highlighted. Integrating patterns together give

58

JUTE MAGAZINE

you the power to express different moods, allowing for greater versatility with the clothing you have, which gives you the ability to buy a great piece and incorporate it into your wardrobe multiple ways. Stripes and floral prints are one of the easier combinations and most popular. Together they create a subtle feminine vibe with a touch of laid back elegance, which makes them a popular go-to for Spring. If you’re not big on florals, try a modern geometric print. Colorful or in black and white, a loud geometric print makes an elegant and fun statement that can be worn at work or play. Abstract prints are another lively option to add to your wardrobe. As a partnership of geometric and distorted prints, they translate best in large doses. And lastly, distorted prints are beloved for looking similar to a painting. With artistic and feminine touches, it invites the free thinkers of the world to be completely themselves. In alliance with patterns, incorporating different textures with expressive prints generates an arresting sense of style. Textures have increased in popularity the last few years, and while they are mainly used in

the fall/winter, that doesn’t mean you can’t integrate them into Spring fashions. The most popular and classic textures for Spring reflect the light, airy, and clean attitude associated with the season. With its lightweight fabric qualities, lace is beautifully versatile in that it adds a sense of sexuality and femininity without being vulgar or heavy. Lace has been a longstanding staple for this very reason. Though it may not be your first choice when on the hunt for an expressive texture, Seer Sucker has an innocent quality about it. A lightweight, puckered cotton fabric, usually striped, paired with a bright floral print echoes the liveliness of Spring. The American Classic, Denim is one of the most popular textures due to its extreme versatility. You can wear it all year long! For example, mixing your favorite distorted print sundress with a denim jacket and floral heels gives off a cheerful vibe. There are numerous possibilities for including pattern play within your personal style. The phrase itself entails, “play”, so venture out of your comfort zone, and try something new. Now your brain may be buzzing with new ideas to incorporate this trend into your everyday life. Working statement pieces into an existing wardrobe can be difficult, especially when you are eager to experiment. If your wallet is stretching thin, an easy tip to mixing patterns is scouring your local Second Hand Shops or Thrift Stores. They are excellent resources in finding unique prints. You will have to do some digging, but in the end, you can often find a true gem that makes it worth your time. They

also run lower in price, which I love! I’m a sucker for a good bargain, especially when I can maintain my sense of style and try new trends at the same time. This trend rolls around each year and can seem daunting to try. Looking for inspiration during the seasons Ready-To-Wear and Resort shows can provide excellent inspirations for trend experimenting. Designers such as, Italian brand MSGM‘s Spring 2014 Ready-To-Wear Collection, Diane Von Furstenberg’s Pre-Fall 2014 Collection and Fausto Puglisi’s Fall 2014 Collection provide an excellent starting point to diverse pattern play this Spring season. A flurry of vibrant prints, colors and textures, these collections create an overall fun mood while making sense. They are the ultimate inspiration for those who admire distorted and geometric prints. For those wanting to add a classic flair, look to Miu Miu’s Resort 2014 Collection. Feminine, energized and clean are the words I use to describe their collection. Using pattern play in a form that is slightly toned down, includes a muted palette and timeless cuts makes it a great reference point. Incorporating your own personal style into any trend makes the best kind of statement because it is the ultimate way of expressing your soul.

no matter how you choose to experiment this Spring Season, just remember to have fun!

A person dressed in a black suit, donning a bowler hat and holding an umbrella. The iconic British look. Conformist and rigid. Despite the lackluster appearance, I’m drawn to the aesthetics. And when you look closely there is more than meets the eye. Forget your preconceptions and let your imagination run away with you. I see a balance of the urban, corporate existence of the western suit and the natural environment we live in. Each suit now has its own personality. A girl who slowly transforms into a hedgehog. A girl whose body changes into grass.

Sarah Catalfo’s childhood passion for fashion has led her on an incredible journey. She has chased her dreams through undertaking a formal education in fashion and assisting buyers for megabrand Target. Now, she is the proud founder of Maybe by Catalfo, a glamorous and sophisticated clothing line. Staying true to her vision in both her life and designing choices, Catalfo values confidence, fearlessness, and style. Her FW14 Collection, Heartful, is available on Luevo.com before it hits boutiques. Jute Magazine’s Yinsey Wang quizzes Catalfo on her brand, experiences and inspiration.

Story Yinsey Wang

Photographer Isabella Le Marchant Romano

Y: You fell for fashion at a young age. Tell us about your earliest memory of fashion. C: When I was very young, my grandmother used to organize a seasonal “fashion show” during our visits. My family would sit in the living room and wait for me to come down the “runway”

to an 80’s soundtrack, and I would model new looks for the season. I’m not surprised at all that I ended up loving fashion and runway trends! My mother was also a sales representative for a kids’ clothing line and used to throw clothing parties.

Y: How did your formal training at George Brown in Canada help you develop as a designer? C: My dream has always been to develop my label Maybe by Catalfo. To run a successful business, I knew that I had to learn about how the industry functions from a business perspective. George Brown’s Fashion Management program gave me a broad overview of each area. But I learned the most valuable skills when working as an assistant buyer. It’s important for fashion designers to have an understanding of the retail buying cycles and the dynamics behind the buyer-vendor relationship. Y: Who in your eyes would be your perfect Maybe by Catalfo brand ambassador? C: Eleonora Carisi. I discovered her when I met her at her Torino, Italy shop. I’ve been following her since and watching the evolution of her style. She would be a perfect ambassador because she’s daring with what she wears and has fun with her

style. And her persona is flirty yet very sophisticated and elegant. She’s so chic. Y: What’s the most challenging aspect of keeping your ideas fresh and inspired when designing a collection? C: I think the challenging aspect especially for a young designer is finding a balance between differentiating yourself, but staying current. I don’t follow trends, but I do make sure that I’m aware of them. When I design, it’s my own interpretation of those trends. I will also involve other influences as inspiration, like art or music or even a single person who inspires my work. I stay open minded and I love adventure. I feel as though I’m always ready for something new to inspire my designs.

Y: Tell us about your corporate experiences working in buying for Target. C: Working for Target was interesting because I started with the company for their launch into Canada. I was essentially working for a giant start-up company! My experience at Target prepared me well for life as an entrepreneur. I saw first-hand that even the biggest start-ups with a lot of financial capital behind them have challenges. Seeing this has helped me press on through obstacles while starting my own business. It wasn’t long before I was craving inspiration and creativity back in my life. I used to sit in vendor meetings wishing I was on the vendor’s side of the table. I knew I was ready for a change. I needed to make the transition to pursuing Maybe completely. Y: Which piece from your current collection do you feel channels you the most? C: It’s hard to pick just one. They all describe me in a different way. I’ll dress differently depending on how I feel that day or where I’m going, so there is really something in this collection that I could wear on any occasion!

118

JUTE MAGAZINE

Y: Tell us about your up and coming collection Heartful? What’s the story behind it? What can willing wearers expect to see? C: No one knows the story yet! My FW14 Heartful collection is my first after leaving Target. The two prints that I chose to use for this collection represent “wild and free”. The colorful animal print is the “wild” and the wings found in the Venice print represent “free”. This is also why I used the Owl and the bird cage in the lookbook photos. I feel free to do what I love and not be contained to thinking “inside the box”. Y: Is there a particular fashion designer whose footsteps you aspire to follow in the future? C: I look to a lot of designers for inspiration, but one that I am really inspired by right now is Mary Katrantzou. She is a true artist; I love her collections and the fact that she designs her own textile prints to make her collections that much more original. Y: How do you want women to feel about themselves when they wear your brand? C: Great question! Wearing Maybe should make you feel confident, fearless and stylish. Maybe is that dress “go-to” dress in your closet that was made for you. Maybe dresses are flirty yet sophisticated, in an effortless style. So you can enjoy yourself because you’re wearing Maybe.
