AN ARTISTIC MOMENT WITH FASHION ILLUSTRATOR

By Stefania Pruscino

Beautiful compositions of vibrancy and fluidity of form can best describe the artwork of fashion illustrator Sara Gilbert. Sara, having been a fashion production manager for over a decade, decided to pursue her love of drawing illustrations as a full time career this past year. Since her transition into the art world she has catapulted into an overnight sensation, even being recognized by legendary supermodel Coco Rocha. Sara sits down with features editor, Stefania Pruscino, to discuss her life long love of art and where she hopes her illustrations will take her in the future.

If you were to collaborate with any designer or brand, which would it be and why? Going back to my love of music, I’d really like to do the cover art for a musician whose style I appreciate, and/or has a special interest in fashion. I sat up and took notice when Solange released her clip for “Loosing You” - which was a while back now. Absolutely everything about that clip is genius to me. The styling, the setting, the story, and the team she worked with, since then I’ve been very interested in her. I like quirky artists such as Sia, Lykke Li, and Lily Allen. I really enjoy discovering new music and fresh, upcoming artists. I would also be proud to say I helped to define the aesthetic of a new brand.

Who are your beauty icons and why? There are lots, but I can’t help loving and going back to Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly, and Twiggy. I think they have an x-factor and are just timeless.

For this issue you illustrate beauty and hair themed drawings, what is your everyday beauty routine? Anyone who knows me knows it would take too long to explain my beauty routine, but most notably I think it’s important to drink lots of water. I freak out if I’m not near some for too long! It’s important to keep up your vitamin C intake, and moisturize every day. I also try not to get too much sun (which can be hard in Australian summer).

What project or collection of drawings are you most proud of thus far in your career? I’ve achieved a lot in my 10 plus year career in fashion. However, it would have to be my final year design collection at college. My two very talented friends who studied graphic design and photography at a different university photographed it. They turned my range into a book for their final year project, and to this day I’m very impressed. It was shot beautifully and in lots of different settings, using various models, and the style in which they

JUTE MAGAZINE • 81

shot told a story. It was a great way to showcase each of our skills together.

What is your favorite place or city to explore and why? I love New York endlessly. It’s so diverse and there’s great history. I also have a fond place in my heart for Hong Kong, as I’ve travelled there a lot as a fashion production manager. The food, people and of course the shopping are great. Visually, I really like the architecture and charm of Latin American cities such as Buenos Aires and Rio, and also love Barcelona and Madrid. They are all just a bit gritty, but full of character. I constantly stop to take photos of floor and wall tiles in places like that who are interesting, old, and imperfect.

JUTE MAGAZINE | PAGE 80

Where, or in what capacity, do you see your illustrations being printed in the future? Ideally, magazine work, but also somehow in the music world such as cover art, or promotional campaigns. Additionally, I think there’s opportunity in collaborating with fashion bloggers or style sites and other areas of social media too.

Would you like to expand into creating/developing prints, textiles or your own clothing line? I am very interested in textile print design, and always have been, but it’s kind of an area all of its own. When it comes to textile print, I know what I like, and the Design Director at my last job really valued my input into print selection and development. However, as much as I love that, I prefer illustrating people a little more for now. I’ve never wanted to be a designer, which is strange I know (having done 3 full-time years of fashion design study), but I have a very big thing for shoes, and would happily be a footwear designer. I also love lingerie so I could see myself designing that too.

Finally, you decided to “change your career direction and journey back to your roots of illustration and art”. What prompted this decision, and what advice do you have for others starting new careers? I wasn’t compelled to resign from my previous job in order to start illustrating, but after a little time off I started getting back into art and really enjoyed picking up a pencil and getting my flow back on. In a way, I

wish I had studied graphic design or fine art, not that I regret studying fashion since many disciplines cross over. I’ve always been creative, but very organized and practical at the same time. My career as a Production Manager sprung my first job as a design assistant for a brand that grew and expanded into offshore production very quickly. I was asked to communicate with international suppliers and ended up over-seeing apparel development production, so I moved up the ranks that way. I was always working with the design teams very closely, so I had some creative outlet to a degree, but I’m absolutely the strategic, practical one. I guess I’m not completely left or right brain. I admit, it’s a little odd for someone so structured to be artistically inclined but still, I’m glad I’ve tuned a corner and started letting the artist in me out again. Advice wise, I think it’s good to connect with other people in your field of interest, even if it’s just following them on social media. I’ve gained a few great tips on how to deal with potential clients, and so forth from that. Above all, just listen to any and all advice, and apply it in the way you think might work for you. Also try to keep a marketing head on and think about how you want to be perceived, how people respond to your work, and without repeating yourself, play to your strengths.

statements: jewels that define you B Y S T E FA N I A P R U S C I N O

After getting an exclusive look at Statements latest collection feature editor, Stefania Pruscino, sat down with designers Jinal Srikanth, Forum Ruchit Parekh, and Raina Bhansali Shah to learn more about their brand and how they intend to expand into western culture.

“Jewelry is not just pieces and stones put together, it is the incorporation of beautiful thought, embraced with an alluring concept, enveloped with exquisite designs and entwined with splendid colors.” Jewelry is art, a form of expression, it is...Statements.

Can you elaborate on your mission statement? To be more specific, what type of woman are you designing for, what is her style or aesthetic?

Our mission is to design for women who are not afraid to express themselves visually. She is independent and dresses for herself, rather than for others. Statements, is all about creating jewelry for different styles and occasions that are as unique as the woman herself.

There are four different collections: Canvas of Nature, Feminine Ferocity, BayaanE-Zamaani, and Haute Couture. Can you explain the story and difference behind each collection? In each collection we try to cover all aspects of a woman’s personality. The first collection ‘Canvas of Nature,’ is completely inspired by our surroundings. Flowers, rocks, water, branches, leaves; everything that connects us to nature is showcased in this collection using raw stones such as: citrines, rutile, amethyst, and hints of pearls. We also mix patterns of floral prints and leaves to create various textures. What is unique about this collection is the use of real flowers and leaves embedded within the jewelry. We did this so that when you wear these pieces, you feel closer to nature.

JUTE MAGAZINE • 86

JUTE MAGAZINE • 87

The second collection ‘Feminine Ferocity,’ is all about the wild nature of women. We like to think that every woman has a wild side within herself. This collection is meant to expose that attribute. These pieces have a more ravenous look since we integrated animal prints using faux furs and medallions. The stones we use in this collection are tigers eye, gold, green cats eye, and amber stone - textured with prints and interlocking chains. We like to think of this collection as being more expressive and confident. The third collection, ‘Bayaan-EZamaani, represents the history and infused cultures of Mughals and Rajput’s in India. The inspiration of this collection came from the motifs that encompass Amer Palace. The facade of the palace is very ornate and intricate and we wanted to emulate this characteristic in the collection. Additionally, these pieces combine old generation ideals to the younger generation by including an ethnic look with a western touch. The final collection, Haute Couture, is all about glamour. The beauty about this collection is that one piece is enough to complete an entire look. This is achieved by the combination of unusual stones and gems to create a look that is not only unique, but also timeless.

What does Statements, offer that other brands do not?

What does the future entail for Statements?

Each piece is one-of-a-kind. You will not find anyone else wearing what you are because we do not create duplicates. Every piece of jewelry is also hand made from scratch, using precious and semi precious stones, as well as other materials. The one thing that really separates Statements from other brands is the individuality of each piece.

Currently, we have been selling jewelry online in three countries: India, Hong Kong, and the United States. We want to continue expanding our brand in other countries such as London and Dubai. We also want to help rid the unemployment rate of women in India by encouraging housewives to work. The idea is that they can outsource the jewelry from us and sell it to their own clients. In the immediate future, however, we want to continue to design for women who like to stand out and enjoy experimenting with different looks as much as we do.

What designers do you look up to and why? We look up to several designers here in the United States and in India. We want to get a better understanding of the western market, so we look up to jewelry designers here for that reason. When we do see designs we like, we always want to go one step ahead so that we stay true to our design aesthetic.

If you had to describe Statements in three words what would it be? Statements is unique, elegant, and classy.

A STOLEN DAY OF ALTER-ego We walked into the open space on stilts, There is nothing else to grab on. Why wolves sing to the moon? Did that girl on the full moon escape? Why is she a display only of nights selected? Is she still bondaged? recognizing yoke shape Has she found piece? young, neglected The earth was wearing my feet When I had to climb a ladder. Did you see what happened to the clouds? Did they love the cities, where I’ve never been? Will the road turn off this sun if I’m crawling? Do you have to leave to loose that key? to heal Where are you, my bloated twilight? distorted If lacy storm is whirling a fridge magnets’ collage, Will you believe in your choice of sorrow? Do you believe the strength is power? No shore, the sea of thoughts is shallow, In the dusk of spring, the years of fear are on the knees. The air is frozen, this height is swallowing, Only your truth is backing you. It’s your disease. If activate destructive silence, when you aren’t watching Will it be standing at the wall? And if the pierced meaning translates actions Will you still run or fall? photographer KAMERAADDIKT

the brains behind the

anti-models; a different kind of model INTERVIEW BY SAFFRON ALEXANDER

It’s safe to say that the days where all the greater public expected from their models was a pretty face and the ability to put on a cute pout are far behind us. Bright, outspoken and personable models like Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn are the future, and Pandora Lennard and Lucy Greene are capitalising on that. “ANTI-AGENCY” is the brainchild of the former fashion editor and freelance stylist who one night decided that being pretty simply wasn’t enough anymore. They wanted to work with “people with real lives” and real personalities. For Pandora and Lucy, what their models do in their spare time is just as important as their looks.

What spurred you to start ANTI-AGENCY? We were both working in fashion for about six years, as stylists, and we were increasingly casting jobs using people that we knew, you know, people that were our friends because we kind of wanted to earn them a little bit of extra money for doing what it was that they loved. We did that for G-Star, for Westwood, for lots of huge brands. Lots of these big name brands were starting to want people that were street cast, so we started putting our friends forward for things and we did a casting for Office, there were about 500 people and out of it one

of our best friends got the job just because she had an amazing style and an amazing personality, so they were really interested in what she was doing, so from that we noticed a trend from it and decided to make a business out of it.

Do you think that personality is becoming more and more a deciding factor in modelling these days? Yes definitely, because there’s such an emergence of social media at the moment, it means that consumers can go and research the models that are in campaigns and find out more about them. And it’s important for brands to use models that have JUTE MAGAZINE • 160

something going for themselves, that are interesting people, that act as good ambassadors for their brands. Whenever a model has personality or is an interesting person or does something else on the side, consumers love it and get really attached to the models. It creates a whole new fanbase for the brand.

So how do you pick your models based on this new want for interesting models with personality?

On your website you say ‘the agency is for people who could’ve been models and decided not to’, can you elaborate some more on that?

It’s a lot of Facebook. When we’re looking at someone, we always check their Facebook or other social networking sites, because we get a real gist of, not only what they look like, but their interests and what they’re doing at the moment, and their style. We also pick people that we know of somehow. So a lot of the girls are girls we have ‘girl crushes’ on and we pick all the coolest guys and sort of just put them all together.

All our models could’ve been models, they’re people that have been approached by modelling agencies in the past, but the thing is that with a normal modelling agencies you have to go to all the casting calls and everything they ask you to do. And our models are people with careers who just don’t have the time to be running off to casting calls every day. So that’s the difference with ANTI-AGENCY. We want them to be successful in their own career. Modelling comes second.

In addition to you guys searching out for models yourselves, I know on your website you have a submissions page. How many applications do you get a day? Oh, about 100...maybe 200 a day! We do get a lot...but it’s still a very personal process for us. It’s just the two of us who personally go through each of the submissions and ultimately decide.

Going through the profiles of the models on your books, I see a lot of them have drastically changed the way they look since starting with you. Does that ever become a problem when trying to book things for them? Not at all. We think actually think it’s a positive for them. These brands are looking for pretty models, yes of course, but they’re also - increasingly nowadays - looking for models with an actual personality and presence that can help to lift the brand on social media platforms. So, we’ve got a girl, Abby, who changes her hair as she pleases. Some days she’ll come in with pink hair, sometimes with blue, and we’re finding that companies really like that.

These aren’t the average models then. Exactly. Our models are different. We really want our models to be role models, we feel like they are role models.

Can you elaborate on the ‘role models’ aspect?

love to go and try to crack them. Watch this space!

We’ve got art directors, illustrators, magazine editors and so many more job fields on our books. These are all people who are excelling in the creative industries.

What’s been your proudest moment since starting the agency? Just when we see our models doing big things. One of our boys just did Marc Jacobs. We’ve got Vivienne Westwood book for Paris Fashion Week. Lillie & Abby walked for Felder Felder at London Fashion Week.

I’ve heard rumours that you’d like to expand to America? Are they just rumours, or is there some truth to it? We’d definitely love to expand to America. Definitely Los Angeles, we think there would be a huge demand for our ANTI models there. We love the big American brands, so we’d

BROOKE: TREND: BRIGHT REDS Red’s seem to come in and out of style every six months. To give Brooke a shade with more longevity, we mixed a bright orange with a more natural copper tone. The combination gives a fun flare to a classic hue. Her hair was then curled, clipping each curl up in a hard set to cool. The curls were gently brushed out to give big waves.

planet laboratories: featured salon

As we all know, trends come and go. From big bangs, to streaky highlights, we’ve all had our fair share of hair-don’ts rather than hair-do’s. However, classic, and elegant never seem to go out. So we have taken the current trends, and melded them with a classic feel. The results are timeless, romantic, and covetable.

To get these looks and more, visit the talented stylists at Planet Laboratories in Cheery Creek, Colorado.

JUTE MAGAZINE • 167

JASON TREND: EDGY DISCONNECTION Jason is all rock and his cut is straight off the stage. The look is softened by his romantic ensemble and the soft red lowlights.

JUTE MAGAZINE • 168

TRACIE TREND:TEXTURE We wanted to make Tracie’s hair big. After glossing her hair with a blue black hue, we took the smallest curling iron we could find and went to work. Then we finger teased each curl individually for volume. The curls are soft, but with a textured edge. Tracie’s look is elegant and womanly.

JUTE MAGAZINE • 169

JOLENE TREND: OMBRE To make the Ombre more classic, we kept the colors close to a natural fade rather than a harsh blonde line. Bayalage and backcombing were used as well as color melting to give a seamless effect. Jolene’s hair was then styled with classic marcel waves for a romantic, soft feel.

JUTE MAGAZINE • 170

RYAN TREND: LONG TOP, SHORT SIDES This men’s trend doesn’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon, and I am okay with that. It takes the classic dapper look and mixes it with a little edge. We added some blonde highlights to brighten Ryan’s natural look. The results? Swoon worthy.

In the midst of designing this unique cultural concept, Desmond suffered a fatal heart attack. The pair had been friends both in and out of the makeup industry for over a decade and had been planning to work on a special project to celebrate their sustained friendship. When Desmond left this earth, Bryan had even more cause to push towards its completion, eventually gathering others to finish the project he and Desmond had originally started. Desmond’s talent can be seen in the superb, handcrafted headpiece appropriately named, “Eternity” - for that is what he leaves for us. This is the inspired sum of their joint determination. In the words of Josh Bryan Ho, “Please enjoy this collection in the hope that all of us can be surrounded by friendships that last forever.”
