Tanya Leskinen

Photographer/Author Yinsey Wang Designer Tanya Leskinen tanyaleskinen.co.uk Hair & Makeup/Model Suze Smethurst Tanya Leskinen is a talented British designer with a penchant for creating sophisticated fabric and clothing. She has artfully mastered the ability to accentuate the female figure through her designs. Not only this, she also produces carefully-crafted textile structures using techniques including hand knitting, crochet, macramé, domestic machine knitting, industrial machine knitting and knotting. Jute Magazine’s Yinsey Wang interviews the up and coming talent on her insights. The clothing featured in this interview are from Tanya Leskinen’s 2013 Graduate Collection. The collection is inspired by quirky, dark and somewhat glamorous photographs of criminals who were photographed by the New South Wales Police Department between 1912 and 1960 (from Peter Doyle’s book City of Shadows).

YW: What draws you towards knitwear? TL: I have always been interested in the details. I find the process of creating a fabric all your own much more exciting and creatively fulfilling than going to a shop and buying a piece of fabric that someone else has designed and made. It makes the end product so much more special; this is as you know you made everything yourself. YW: What piece or series are you most proud of and why? TL: I think it would have to be the knotted tabard from my Final Collection which I exhibited at last year’s Knitted Textile Awards. It’s different from anything else I’ve made and I wish I had done more of it! Maybe it will be the inspiration for a future project... YW: How did your formal university education affect your development as a designer? TL: University was tough and it was mainly because of the pressure under which I put myself. But those experiences have helped me to put things into perspective and

have taught me to take a step back from my work rather than getting caught up in the whirlwind. We were given a lot of freedom at university in terms of designing but we had to adhere to strict briefs and deadlines. This prepares you for the real world. YW: What are your key inspirations? When you are low in ideas, how do you get inspired again? TL: Inspiration can literally come from anywhere. My Final Collection was inspired by some old photographs - it’s usually photography that sparks an idea. I love making boards on Pinterest as well, there are so many unique images out there, so if I’m low on ideas I’ll always see something on there that will prompt a new concept.

YW: What is your earliest memory of fashion? TL: When I was about 8 years old, I was mesmerized by my grandmother knitting. I didn’t think of it as fashion back then, I just loved making things by hand and was determined to knit, as it seemed so difficult at the time. I also went through a phase of making pencil cases when I was allowed to use the sewing machine. YW: Which technique in knitting comes most natural to you? As knitting involves creating structure, fabric and all the pieces in one effort, how do you ensure you get a product and the finish you want? TL: I wouldn’t say there’s one particular technique - a lot happens by accident. With regards to fabric, my ideas will usually begin by just experimenting with yarns I like on my machine. Then, I’ll mix different techniques. Once I’m happy with a particular swatch, I’ll start thinking about how it could work when translated into a garment, so I kind of work backwards from texture to garment rather than the other way round. YW: What’s the longest amount of time you’ve spent on one piece? Describe your approach, do you work on it in one go, or in bits and pieces, or allocate fragments of your time over a long period? TL: I think the floor length grey and gold coat from my collection definitely took the longest time to make - a good few months. It’s actually the first thing I started making and had to be done in many panels as my machine wasn’t wide enough to make the fabric. I approached it piece by piece but didn’t think about linings and finishings, so those things had to be worked out along the way! YW: Your graduate collection focuses on the unique stylistic qualities of vintage photographs of convicts. Tell us more about how you brought the grittiness of the theme into the delicate handicraft of knitting. TL: I focused a lot on the color. I think by using a limited palette of colors, I kept the focus on the knitted techniques and details as too many colors and patterns can often distract from texture. I wanted to retain the grittiness whilst injecting a hint of glamour by using some gorgeous lurex yarns in antique gold shades, as well as creating floor length shapes to convey the feeling of excess. YW: You’re also into fitness a lot. How different are your experiences in the fashion world and your interest in keeping healthy and fit? TL: It’s quite hard balancing the two. I think I enjoy them both because they’re about perseverance and discipline. My interest in keeping fit is mainly a stress reliever for when fashion gets too much! YW: As you create, have you thought about the sort of designer you want to be remembered as and what sort of designs do you want to be known for? TL: I haven’t thought about that yet! I still feel like a complete novice so I’m just going with the flow at the moment! I’d like to be known for creating garments that people remember.

Dear Music, I Love You Indigenous Peoples are 2 Real 4 DA Mind ~ With a whole lot of heart … Written by Nicole Schaap – Photography by Mike Larremore

Ironic? Sure. But it was initially irritating that Colorado based hip hop group Indigenous Peoples titled their new album A Day Late and a Dollar Short. Bizzy Bone, (you know him, the Grammy award winning RAP ICON from Bone Thugs N Harmony), presented the album along with his entourage, The 7th Sign. I'm thinking that would be very much on time with enough dollars to cover a celebratory cocktail. That's just the beginning of what any rap group would consider major successes. The disc has a track featuring Gift of Gab of Blackilicious, and beats by MC Young. (MC YOUNG creates beats in Syria. If you don’t understand how incredible that is,

186

Google what’s going down in Syria.) There are multiple tracks featuring various members of Bone Thugs N Harmony. You know BONE! Krayzie and Layzie are on the first track, Michelob makes an appearance, and “Bizzy Bone Presents” dawns the cover. Yes! It's a big deal! Everybody loves BONE THUGS N HARMONY. Truly, you do, you may have just forgotten. I finally caught up with these guys. Jimmy Macias (K-OSS), Anthony Romero (Siklone), and Hasson Rashad (7ven) met up with me. I was excited, I love rap music, and they indulged my hip hop loving curiosities for hours. With every question they answered, and each story they told, I began to understand the title of the album, and it couldn’t be more appropriate.

JUTE MAGAZINE

A Day Late and a Dollar Short took 6 years to master and release. Sure, that sucks, but it’s really only the beginning. Larry Harris (Lyrical Hitman) and Jimmy Macias started this group together when they were kids. In 2003, Larry left the group to join the Marines. It was in Afghanistan that Lyrical Hitman lost his life while saving that of a fellow marine. Killed in action, he was awarded a Sliver Star and a Purple Heart. Losing a group member would be devastating, but losing a best friend would be enough tragedy to shake the foundation of any creative pursuits. Through group struggles, individual members faced their own hardships. Unforeseen tragedy felt like a trend with these guys. Hasson shared his story. He's from Brooklyn, the birth

place of hip hop. His parents died when he was young. He grew up an orphan, jumping from group home to group home to foster care. That all by itself is heart breaking. Then he started sharing a story about his little sister, Mooda. Mooda was born with HIV. After their parents passed, Mooda and Hasson were adopted and moved out of New York. Events occurred that ended up placing Hasson elsewhere, but Mooda stayed. AIDS developed, followed by cancer. The siblings were able to maintain contact, then 6 months after her 18th birthday, Mooda passed away. The lyrics in the song “Hurt” tell the story better than I ever could (Track 19). His little sister could very well be the

driving force behind his personal tenacity to succeed in this game. Jimmy, Anthony, and Hasson have all fought battles, as individuals and as a collective. Be it racism, poverty, or tremendous loss, they continue to pursue their dreams. You can see they are grateful for all of their successes. They have a tremendous respect for the other artists that they have collaborated with. Indigenous Peoples doesn't rap about fake hardships, or unrealistic life situations. Each of them bring their vulnerability and humor to the music they create. Their stage presence is a combination of an infectious joy and comedic relief. These guys have fought through what some of us can't imagine. Where so many of us may have easily

thrown in the towel, they are clearly fighting until the finish, and they're passionate about hip hop music. When interviewing “rappers”, I wasn't expecting the amount of honesty and depth that our conversation held. Maybe it’s because of what we think rap is now: the radio play is pretty shallow. Try and remember when you loved hip hop music! That's what I.P. reminds me of. A time when hip hop music was good, there was a message, it was fun, and it brightened your day. A time when it was about the music. What really makes them special to me is the unmistakable vibe they exude: one of hope. Check out Indigenous Peoples: A Day Late and a Dollar Short: available on iTunes.

Photographer Sascha Haubold Designer FABRYAN fabryan.com Stylist Cristina Chirila Hair Stylist Alisha Ehret Makeup Artist Anja Kirchner Models Jasmin Melhuish, Liza Kohl Assistant Bako Rambini Interview with designer Samantha-Jane Agbontaen of Fabryan London by Lynzi Judish LJ: Samantha, where are you initially from? S: London

LJ: Did you know as a child you wanted to design clothing? S: I grew up around fashion as my mother was a dressmaker. Then I didn’t know I was interested in designing. I went on to study business and follow a different career path before changing four years ago to fashion. It’s a beautiful thing when a career and passion comes together. LJ: Explain your brand for people who have not experienced Fabryan. S: Fabryan is a luxury womenswear and accessories brand based in London. We design collections for the elegant woman. We have a strong ethical value. Our collections are all made in small quantities in London. LJ: How would you explain your design aesthetic? S: Elegant designs with simple cuts that boasts of highend tailoring.

LJ: Your work has already received press from places like Tatler and Vogue. If you could have your designs in any magazine, where would it be and in what capacity? S: I don’t have any specific magazine in mind. I do hope that the brand continues to receive amazing press features in notable magazines worldwide. LJ: What kind of woman wears Fabryan? S: The ‘Fabryan woman’ is a modern lady who is not afraid to stand out. She is elegant; she embraces her body, wearing clothes that accentuate her curves without being a fashion victim. She is fiercely irresistible. LJ: If you could have any celebrity or model represent your line, who would it be? S: It would be awesome to have the model Chanel Iman wear Fabryan. She is very beautiful. LJ: What’s next for Fabryan? S: Just finished our SS15 collection and we are working on a shoot shortly. As we celebrate our 4th birthday next month, we are also re-branding and looking into our marketing strategies. It’s rather exciting times for Fabryan.
